Anna Mae Light

SIDNEY — Anna Mae Light, 73, formerly of Sidney and Walton, passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at the Valleyview Manor Nursing Home in Norwich.

Mrs. Light was born March 11, 1931, in the town of Walton, to Raymond A. and Alba (France) Miner.

On April 17, 1949, she married John C. Light at Franklin Depot. Mr. Light predeceased her Oct. 20, 1986.

Mrs. Light was a devoted housewife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by three sons, Raymond of Walton, Glenn of Sidney and Roger of Sidney; a daughter, Grace Fink of Unadilla; 15 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a sister, Virginia Miner of Oneonta.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a half brother, Ray Cliff, and a grandson, Robin Light.

A graveside memorial service will be held in the spring in the Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center, with time and date to be announced later.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Helen G. Crewell

PLAINFIELD — Helen Gould Crewell, 88, passed away Jan. 8, 2005, at the Chase Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born May 8, 1916, in Bridgewater, the daughter of William and Sarah Ward Gould.

She received her education at the West Winfield Academy.

In 1934, she married Harold O. Crewell. He died May 18, 2003. She was involved in farming with her husband.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Orcutt, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, 365 West Main St., West Winfield, with Pastor Charles Fitch officiating. Interment will be in Unadilla Forks Cemetery. Calling hours are from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral Wednesday.

Mary Ann Gauthier

NEW BERN, N.C. — Mary Ann Gauthier of 204 Esquire Court, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C.

She attended Saint Paul Catholic Church, where a memorial service will be held at a later date.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Gauthier of New Bern; one son, Robert Gauthier of Fairfield, Conn.; one daughter, Lisa Chester of East Haven, Conn.; three sisters, Janet Woodrow of Bainbridge, Loretta Stolpinski of Norwich and Paulette Gural of Norwich; one brother, Daniel Bibeau of Rotterdam; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements by Pollock-Best Funerals and Cremations, New Bern.

William K. Streek

MASSAPEQUA — William K. Streek of Massapequa passed away Monday, Jan. 3, 2005.

He was the cherished husband of Harriet for 44 years; the loving father of Jenny and Wayne Carrino, Donna and Agustin Gago, and Billy and Stephanie Streek; the beloved grandfather of Gina, Kate, Nick, Antigone, Dominique, Austin, Anthony, Danny and Little Billy; the fond brother of Inge Gamble and Ronald Streek.

Reposing at Massapequa Funeral Home Inc., North Chapel, 1050 Park Boulevard, Massapequa Park, was from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005.

Sonya Jean Kelley

STAMFORD — Sonya Jean Kelley, 44, of Stamford went to be with her Lord on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, surrounded by her loving family.

Sonya was born Jan. 26, 1960, in Stamford, the daughter of James E. Kelley and Velma Craft Kelley.

She attended the Delaware County ARC Community Living Skills Program in Walton since 1980.

Family parties and gatherings were very important to Sonya. She loved music and her artwork, but her love of hats is how many will remember her.

Her parents, James Kelley and Joan Davis of Davenport Center and Velma Kelley and Danny Stannard of Stamford; sisters, Darlene Kelley of Hobart and Rhonda Kelley of Worcester; and a brother, Shawn Kelley of Richmondville, survive her. Her maternal grandmother, Goldie Craft of Stamford, and several aunts, uncles, nieces and one great-niece, and a special friend, Ralph at ARC, also survive her.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at the Hobart United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lorraine Coscia-Ackerman officiating.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evening, Jan. 12, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Burial will take place in the spring in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions can be made to the Delaware County ARC in the name of Sonya Kelley.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home.

Paul Boss

CHERRY VALLEY — Paul Boss, 75, of 45 Genesee St., Cherry Valley, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

Paul was born in Brooklyn and graduated from Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood. He worked most of his adult life in the heating, ventilating and air-conditioning industry, having been employed by the Long Island Lighting Company in Hauppauge and Brentwood, as well as by American Bakeries Inc. in Jacksonville, Fla. He was a proud member of the International Confectionery and Bakers Union.

Paul was an Armed Services veteran, having served in the Korean war with the Airborne.

Paul moved to the Cherry Valley area in 1990 and thereafter made the area his adopted home.

Paul loved the country and the outdoors. He enjoyed boating and fishing as well as target shooting with a pistol. He had an inquisitive mind and was an avid reader of history. He loved to collect objects of interest and had an extensive collection of such varied items as eagles, Franklin Mint coins and antique cars as well as numerous Christmas ornaments.

He was a member of the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club and enjoyed the many friends he made among its members.

Paul could often be seen frequenting Ma’s and Pa’s, his favorite restaurant in Cherry Valley, or sitting on the benches on Main Street in Cooperstown with his beloved Akita, "Suki," at his side while he greeted and talked to friends and strangers alike.

Paul is survived by his son, David Boss of Long Island, and his daughter, Tracey C. Boss, and her husband, Evandro Soldatelli, of Ithaca; as well as by four grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Rebecca (Bishop) Boss, in 1999.

Graveside services will be held at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Pinelawn, Long Island, at a date and time to be announced at a later date.

Arrangement are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Louise P. Cornwell

COOPERSTOWN — Louise P. Cornwell, 93, of Cooperstown died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Otsego Manor.

Mrs. Cornwell was born Dec. 4, 1911, in Winchester, Mass., the daughter of John Graves Purington and Marguerite (Sache) Purington.

She married Robert H. Cornwell Jr. on Dec. 7, 1935, in the Church of the Epiphany, New York City.

Mrs. Cornwell was a graduate of Winchester High School, Winchester, Mass., and Miss Porter’s.

From her residence in Westfield, N.J., Mrs. Cornwell summered in Fly Creek every year from 1959 until she moved permanently to Cooperstown in 1972.

She loved to garden and was an accomplished golfer. She was a former member of the Lake and Valley Garden Club and the Cooperstown Country Club.

Mrs. Cornwell was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Cornwell Jr., her parents, John G. Purington and Marguerite P. Jackson, and a sister, Constance P. Borland.

She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn C. Chrone, and her husband, Eugene W. Chrone, of Georgetown, Texas; three grandchildren, Robert F. Chrone and his wife, Angie, of Los Angeles, Calif., Julie C. Martin and her husband, Jon, of McKinney, Texas, and Jennifer C. Willer and her husband, Stuart, of Lubbock, Texas; and seven great-grandchildren, Robert and Natalie Chrone, Rylee and Jordan Martin, and Jaycie, Jayden and Jenna Willer. She is also survived by a niece, Linda B. Points; and two grandnephews.

Funeral services for Louise will be held in the spring at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown at a date and time to be determined. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery.

Those who wish may make contributions in Louise’s memory to the Friends of Bassett, One Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Thomas P. Johnson

GILBOA — Thomas Peter Johnson, 46, died suddenly Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005.

Originally from St. Regis Falls, he was raised in Grand Gorge and graduated from Grand Gorge Central School in 1979.

A local custom home builder for 25-plus years, Tom was a gifted woodworker and craftsman who created special works of art for family and friends. His favorite subject was the American bald eagle.

He was an avid Jets and Mets fan. His favorite pastimes included coaching his son, Tyler, in baseball, time with his family, going to St. Regis Falls and writing poetry.

He will be remembered by his loving wife of 16 years, Judith Johnson; his daughter, Michelle Caruso; his son, Tyler; his parents, Roger (Pete) and Jean Johnson; his brothers, Jeffrey and Roger; his sisters, Judy, Joy, Tena and Julie; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, in the Gilboa United Methodist Church, Gilboa, with the Rev. Christina Hanson officiating.

Interment will be in the spring at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Prattsville.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

James H. Dunphy

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. James Henry Dunphy Jr., 82, of Woodside Hall in Cooperstown and formerly of Rutland, Vt., died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 9, 2005, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born Nov. 7, 1922, in Randolph, Mass., the son of James Henry Dunphy Sr. and Isabell Gertrude Pope Dunphy.

He married Jean Louise Gillum on July 3, 1950, in New Bedford, Mass.

Raised in Randolph, Mass., he graduated from high school and earned his AB degree from Boston College.

Mr. Dunphy entered the United States Marine Corps on May 30, 1944, and proudly served his country during World War II as a mortar crewman and guard. He was involved in action at Okinawa and received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in that conflict on April 14, 1945. He was also issued the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star and the Victory Medal for World War II.

Upon receiving his honorable discharge Feb. 1, 1946, he returned to the United States and pursued a career in retailing. For many years he was the retail manager of King’s Department Store in Rutland, Vt., retiring in the early 1980s.

He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Rutland and served the church for many years as an usher. He was also a member the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 648 and the American Legion Post No. 31 in Rutland.

Mr. Dunphy is survived by his wife, Jean, of Cooperstown; three daughters, Susan Stevens of Pierstown, Deborah A. Dunphy and her husband, John E. Welch, of Lynnfield, Mass., and Patricia Pelis and her husband, Michael, of Enfield, Conn.; three grandchildren, John D. Welch, Anne G. Welch and James Michael Pelis; and two sisters, Kathryn Hoye of Silver Spring, Md., and Elizabeth Linfield of Kingston, Mass.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Marge Moore and Mary Elizabeth Dunphy.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church, presiding.

The Service of Committal and Burial with military honors will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Randolph, Mass.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until service time, Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts in Mr. Dunphy’s memory may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Nina J. Powers

MILFORD — Mrs. Nina J. Powers, 85, of Goey Pond Road West and formerly of Hinman Hollow Road in Milford, died late Saturday evening, Jan. 8, 2005, at The Kingston Hospital.

She was born March 20, 1919, at home in the town of Burlington, a daughter of Peter Smith and Grace Hannah (Richards) Jenks.

She married James Frederick Powers on Aug. 18, 1949, at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

A lifelong area resident, Nina graduated from Hartwick High School. She was first employed as a telephone operator and later at Scintilla in Sidney and Bresee’s in Oneonta.

She then devoted her life to raising her family and caring for their home. She also was employed by Astrocom Electronics in Colliersville from 1971 until 1981.

During the years she and her husband operated their dairy farm, she was a member of the Home Bureau, Hinman Hollow Grange and the DairyLea Co-op.

The main loves of her life were children, flowers and all creatures great and small. She enjoyed her pets and was noted for her ability to nurture and care for virtually every living creature.

When she and her husband moved to their log cabin on the hill in 1983, she established a wildlife cafeteria for the surrounding deer, turkey, possum, squirrel and bird population. All wildlife has been welcome on their property.

Nina’s family extends their deepest gratitude to Dr. Robert Lancey and Karen Caruso for the extraordinary care they provided; and they also extend their deepest appreciation to Drs. Bruce Kramer and Alan Kozak for their compassion.

Nina is survived by her husband of 55 years, Fred, of Milford; five daughters, Kathleen Stiefel of Milford, Mary Ellen and Wayne Grandner of Port Jefferson Station, Dr. Susan Powers and John Glaser of Gaithersburg, Md., Rosemary Powers of Milford, and Teresa Konopka of Hartwick; four sons, James Powers and Dr. Pam Powers of South New Berlin, Dr. Michael Powers and Dr. Lucy Jones of Hartwick, Timothy and Cindy Powers of West Winfield, and Daniel Powers and Cynthia Wiegel of Milford; her grandchildren, Darcy Dibble and Tim Clapper of Hartwick, Scott Dibble of Oneonta, Brienna Stiefel of Milford, Kristin Grandner of London, England, Courtney and James Grandner of Ithaca, Nate Grandner of Port Jefferson Station, Andrew Powers of Ithaca, Ellyse and Alexis Powers of South New Berlin, Taylor, Olivia and Vaughan Powers of Hartwick, Benjamin, Hannah and Michael Glaser of Gaithersburg, Md., Brett, Sarah, Jessica and Adam Powers of West Winfield, Amanda and Gideon Powers of Milford and Helen Konopke of Hartwick; two great-grandchildren, Tim and Abbey Clapper of Hartwick; her two sisters, Mrs. Irene Brown of Fulton and Mrs. Lucile Gilchrist of Cooperstown; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Marie Van Buren of Baldwinsville.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding.

The Service of Committal and burial will be at a later date in Hartwick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening, Jan. 13, 2005, when Nina’s family will be in attendance.

Thaddeus Green

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Thaddeus A. Green, known as T.A. or Ted, of Greenville died Dec. 31, 2004, in St. Francis Hospital, after having suffered a massive heart attack.

He is survived by two sons, Paul Green of Greenville, S.C., and Bruce Green of Seneca Falls; and eight grandchildren. He will be missed by countless friends.

Ted was born Sept. 5, 1918, in West Oneonta, to Jesse and Elisabeth Green.

He was predeceased by a brother, Byron, of Oneonta.

Ted was sales and service engineer for the largest pump manufacturer in the world, Gould’s Pumps of Seneca Falls, for 36 years. He then worked as an independent contractor in sales and installation of pumps, ceiling fans and air filtration systems until 1993.

He was a longtime member of St. John United Methodist Church and the church choir. Ted was active for many years as a trainer and mentor in AA.

He was an ardent conservative who wrote a conservative newsletter to friends and relatives for years.

A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Jan. 6, 2005, at St. John United Methodist Church, 10 Pine Creek Drive (Belle Meade), Greenville. All friends and associates were invited to celebrate Ted’s life.

Cristina Martinez

MILFORD — Cristina "Cachita" Martinez, 68, of Milford died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, with her loving family by her side, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born Feb. 7, 1936, in Cuba, the daughter of Jesus and Leocricia (Del Toro) Silva.

She married Manuel Martinez in Cuba in April of 1954. He survives her.

Cristina has lived in the area since 1981. Before that, she lived in Brooklyn.

She was a member of Hermita De La Caridad Del Cobre in Miami, Fla. Cristina enjoyed watching baseball, especially the New York Yankees. She also was a collector of porcelain dolls.

She is survived by her loving husband, Manuel A. Martinez of Milford; her four children, a son, Jose Martinez, and his wife, Carlota, of Brooklyn; a daughter, Zoe Martinez of Brooklyn; her son, Robert Martinez, and his wife, Dalilah, of Milford; her daughter, Cristina (Martinez) Rodriguez, and her spouse, Louis, of Mount Upton. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren, Ali Martinez, Jacqueline April Martinez, Ismael Diaz III, Cassandra E. Martinez, Miguel A. Martinez, Adrian A. Martinez, Samara E. Rodriguez, Chloe M. Rodriguez and Charisma C. Rodriguez; one great-grandchild, Gabriel Martinez.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.
