Lucy Paul Sanford

COBLESKILL — Lucy Paul Sanford, 70 of Route 10, Cobleskill, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005.

She grew up in Shavertown and was a graduate of Andes High School, and Delhi Agricultural College.

Lucy met Douglas Sanford in Masonville and got married while working in Scintilla.

Her special interests and hobbies included quilting, crafts and gardening. She formerly made her home in New Kingston and had been a Cobleskill resident since 1965.

She was born June 8, 1934, in Andes, daughter of the late Harold and Lucy Shaver Paul Sr. Her husband predeceased her in 1996.

Surviving are her children, Paul Sanford and wife Donna of Connecticut, Mike Sanford and wife Amy of Fonda, Doris Shafer of Cobleskill, Scott Sanford of Amsterdam, Susan Negron of Cobleskill, Kevin Sanford and wife, Kari, of Cobleskill; one brother, Harold Paul of Masonville; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Lucy Paul Sanford will be held at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the New Kingston Church with the Rev. McAlister officiating. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 1 p.m. until service time.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia.

Walter A. Morgan

KERHONKSON — Mr. Walter Alfred Morgan of Kerhonkson and formerly of Milton. Mr. Walter Alfred Morgan, a longtime resident of Milton and general manager for Norco in Milton died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at home with his family by his side. He was 71.

Walter and Joann retired to Kerhonkson, and he worked part-time for Crystal Run and also had a woodworking business.

He was born Sept. 22, 1933, in Port Jervis, the son of the late Walter and the late Mary Masker Morgan.

Walter was married for 47 years to Joann Lane Morgan, who he married April 28, 1957.

He was a member of AARP. Walter served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was extremely proud of his grandson, Walter, who is currently serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq.

A family statement read: "Walter was an outdoors man. He loved fishing, hunting and had a hobby of woodworking. He especially enjoyed sitting by a bonfire with his sons and grandchildren."

Surviving are his wife, Joann Lane Morgan, at home; daughter, Della Davis, Margaretville; sons, Walter L. Morgan, Highland, Carl Morgan, Clintondale, Michael Morgan, Highland, David Morgan, Clearwater, Fla., and Daniel Morgan, Gardiner; brothers, Roland Morgan, Sparrowbush, and Russell Morgan, Port Jervis; sister, Thelma Peer, North Hudson; eight grandsons; one granddaughter, Michelle; and two great-grandchildren. Also, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, James Morgan, and five sisters, Evelyn Hicks, Mildred Violet Morgan, Philamena Talmadge, Sara Morgan and Louella Morgan.

Friends may call at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, 100 East Main St., Port Jervis, from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005. Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Jan. 13, from Gray-Parker Funeral Home, 100 E. Main St., Port Jervis, with the Rev. Glenn Scheyhing officiating.

Cremation will be at H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain View Nursing Home, Route 28, Margaretville, NY 12455.

Xavier T. Shearer

ILION — Xavier T. Shearer, 14 months old, the beloved son of Sharmon Talbot-Shearer and Jonathan Shearer of Ilion, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at the Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.

Xavier was born Nov. 2, 2003, in Cooperstown.

Throughout his all-too-short life, he was a bundle of energy with sparkling blue eyes and an infectious smile and laugh. He was easygoing and always willing to hug, be hugged and to please.

Xavier leaves surviving his parents; his two half sisters, Jade M. Llewellyn and Alexis M. Shearer; as well as his sister, Raven A. Shearer. He also leaves surviving his paternal grandmother, Jean Walters, and her husband, Denny Walters, of Rome; his maternal grandmother, Barbara Talbot of Ilion; and his maternal great-grandparents, William and Evelyn Talbot of Fly Creek.

A funeral service celebrating Xavier’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St. in Cooperstown, with the Pastor Bradley Hales of Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church in Verona officiating. The family will be present from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral to receive friends.

Burial will be in the spring in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Anita Tobey Neighbors/Steele

MORRIS — Anita Tobey Neighbors/Steele, 78, of Morris went to be with her Lord on Jan. 4, 2005, in Deland, Fla.

She was born in Oneonta on Feb. 8, 1926, the daughter of Howard Hamilton and Celia Adelaide (Wetmore) Halbert.

She was married to Robert Leslie Steele in March 1971. He passed away June 26, 1997. She was previously married to Edward Vines Spencer, the father of her children.

She graduated from Morris Central School (class of 1944) as valedictorian of her class. She attended Central City Business Institute in Syracuse and operated the Tobey homestead farm for many years. She then worked as a waitress in the Oneonta area. Anita was more recently employed by Oneonta Public Transit (OPT) as operations manager for 18 years until her retirement in 1992.

After retirement, she continued to enjoy her passion, which was collecting Depression glass and antiques. This led to the opening of her shop, Anita’s on Patrick Hill, which she operated in the summer and spent her winters in Florida.

For more than 30 years, she played with the musical group Wanda, Nita and the Country Gentlemen.

In recent years. she had traveled extensively throughout the West with her friend Ron Horton and her beloved Dachshund, Scooter.

Anita was a member of the D.A.R. of Gilbertsville, Morris United Methodist Church, Morris Alumni Association, the Oneonta Local Musician’s Union, and had served as secretary/treasurer of the "Mohawk Valley Power of the Past" Engine Club for 15 years.

Anita is survived by her children, Pamela J. Stewart and husband Eric of Oneonta, Edward L. Spencer and wife Linda of Oneonta, and Peggy Spencer Hamilton and husband Raymond of Oneonta. Anita was blessed with her grandchildren, Steven and Shelley Andrews, Michael Andrews, Ryan Llewellyn, Brinn Spencer, Leigh Ann Neer and Christopher Hamilton; as well as a great-grandson, Nicholas Steven Andrews. She is also survived by a brother, Ronald Halbert, and his wife, Lorraine, of Morris; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating. Burial will follow at the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

Friends who wish are asked to donate to the American Cancer Society in her memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Renwick Boggs

ONEONTA — Renwick Boggs, 90, of Oneonta passed away Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home after a long illness.

He was born Sept. 30, 1914, in the town of Franklin, the son of Hilliard and Elizabeth (Rutherford) Boggs.

He graduated from Franklin Central School and served in the Army Air Corps.

He was married in Guilford to Doris Marble on Nov. 6, 1941.

He was employed at Scintilla and Bendix Corp. for 10 years. He also worked for Sears & Roebuck in Oneonta. He was a real estate broker for 40 years and a housing developer.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Doris Boggs of Oneonta; two sons, David and wife Elizabeth of Oneonta and William and wife Marillyn of Jackson, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Kathy and husband Brian Clancy of Cooperstown, Jennifer Boggs of Cooperstown, John Boggs and fiancee Jennifer Adcock of Oneonta, William Boggs of Whiteville, Tenn., Cynthia Talotta of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Page and husband Edward Verville of Pawleys Island, S.C., and Edward and Sharon Boggs of Durham, N.C. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Stephen and Richard Clancy, Victoria Talotta, Savannah, Mary Payton and Benjamin Verville; a sister, Margaret Craig of Oneonta; a brother, Wendell Boggs of Herkimer; and a half sister, Evelyn Dickson of Delhi.

He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Nettie Moore, and a half brother, Paul Boggs.

He was a lifetime member of the BPOE 1312 of Oneonta and the Oneonta Country Club.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Northern New York Chapter, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, NY 12206.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Beverly J. Solano

RICHMONDVILLE — Beverly J. Solano, 61, passed away Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 6, 1943, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Hartley and Alberta (Kilts) Strong.

Beverly was an office manager at ACT in Schenectady. She was a Richmondville area resident for the past 14 years and was previously from Mooers Forks.

Beverly enjoyed her children, traveling and camping with her nephews.

She is survived by her companion, Richard Sawyer; four children, Connie and her husband, Charles Best, Jim Solano, Christina and her husband, Scott Herman, and Joseph Solano; three grandchildren, Corey Trombley, Max Best and Hunter Riley; two sisters, Shirley Raney and Sandra Hoffman; two brothers, Charles and Bob Strong; many nieces and nephews; her companion’s two sons, Richard and Paul Sawyer and their families; and her dog, Rebel.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Beverly to the Catskill Area Hospice, 327 West Main St., Cobleskill, NY 12043.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Mary Ellen Young

ONEONTA — Mary Ellen Young, 99, of Oneonta died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 13, 1905, in Stamford, the daughter of Daniel and Jennie (Cornell) Welsh.

She married Elmer L. Young on Dec. 24, 1924, in Delhi. Mr. Young predeceased her Jan. 29, 1980.

Mary was a waitress at the Clarence Johnson Restaurant in Oneonta as well a homemaker.

She was a member of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church for more than 30 years and was a member of their Communion Services.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Gladys Young of Oneonta; her four grandchildren; her four great-grandchildren; and her one great-great-granddaughter; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased by her daughter, Madeline Terry, on March 6, 2001, in Florida, and her sister, Nellie Hulbert, on Feb. 12, 2000, in Oneonta.

Mary Ellen’s family would like to extend a sincere thank-you to all of the staff at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home for all of their care and compassion that they gave to Mary.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, in the spring.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Cristina Martinez

MILFORD — Cristina "Cachita" Martinez, 68, of Milford died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, with her loving family by her side at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born Feb. 7, 1936, in Cuba, the daughter of Jesus and Leocricia (Del Toro) Silva.

She married Manuel Martinez in Cuba in April of 1954. He survives her.

Cristina has lived in the area since 1981. Before that, she lived in Brooklyn.

She was a member of Hermita De La Caridad Del Cobre in Miami, Fla. Cristina enjoyed watching baseball, especially the New York Yankees. She also was a collector of porcelain dolls.

She is survived by her loving husband, Manuel A. Martinez of Milford; her four children, a son, Jose Martinez, and his wife, Carlota, of Brooklyn; a daughter, Zoe Martinez of Brooklyn; her son, Robert Martinez, and his wife, Dalilah, of Milford; her daughter, Cristina (Martinez) Rodriguez, and her spouse, Louis, of Mount Upton. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren, Ali Martinez, Jacqueline April Martinez, Ismael Diaz III, Cassandra E. Martinez, Miguel A. Martinez, Adrian A. Martinez, Samara E. Rodriguez, Chloe M. Rodriguez and Charisma C. Rodriguez; one great-grandchild, Gabriel Martinez.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Clyde Southwick

NEW BERLIN — Clyde W. Southwick, 82, of New Berlin died Jan. 12, 2005, in Norwich.

Clyde was born May 21, 1922, in Morris, the son of Clyde and Lula (Bixby) Southwick.

He married Alice Davis on June 14, 1949. She survives him.

He spent his childhood in Morris and attended Morris Central School.

Clyde is survived by his grandson, Matthew, and wife Brandy Southwick; great-grandson, Nathaniel; great-granddaughter, Chelsea; granddaughter, Danielle Southwick; great-grandson, Devon; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Jones and Lorraine Lindsay; and brother-in-law, Rupert Davis and his wife, Halys.

He was predeceased by his son, Robert Southwick; and three sisters, Gladys Lamb, Charlotte Holden and Alice Gardner.

Clyde was a truck driver and worked at Kraft Foods of South Edmeston. He was also employed by Chase Memorial Nursing Home and Preferred Mutual Insurance Company. He retired in 1984.

He attended the South Edmeston Community Church.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. John Osterhout officiating. Calling hours will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. proceeding the funeral at the Dakin Funeral Home.

Interment will be in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Berlin Emergency Squad, New Berlin, NY 13411.

Louise L. Decker

ONEONTA — Louise L. Decker, 85, of Oneonta died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born July 2, 1919, in Oneonta, the daughter of Ben and Lillian (Palmer) Leib.

She married Leo W. Decker on April 11, 1942, in Oneonta. He predeceased her Jan. 12, 1986.

Louise was a lifelong area resident. She worked at the Mica Plant on Chestnut Street for a period of time. Louise was involved with the Cornell Cooperative Extension as well as the Homemaker’s Club.

She enjoyed camping, especially in the Adirondack Mountains. Louise loved her family dearly and enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible.

She is survived by her loving son, Douglas A. Decker and his wife, Michelle, of Davenport; as well as a grandson, Taylor Boyle Decker of Davenport.

A graveside committal service will be held at a later date in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in Louise’s memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Laverne Hoar

DELHI — Laverne Evelyn Hoar, 86, of Delhi died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

Daughter of the late William H. and Ora Bodie Hoar, she was born May 30, 1918, in Haines, Pa.

She was a graduate of Honesdale High School and Wayne Commercial School.

Before retirement, she worked several years as a stenographer in Syracuse and was employed most of her life in Baltimore, Md., for Exxon.

Laverne lived three years at the home of her nephew, David Elmore and his wife, Barbara, in Davenport before entering Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She enjoyed traveling, ballroom dancing and spending the winter months in Florida.

Survivors are one sister, Gertrude Elmore of Damascus, Pa.; one brother, Clyde Hoar of Glenside, Pa.; a niece, Joan Elmore of Honesdale; a nephew, David Elmore and his wife, Barbara, of Davenport; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Maybert Busko.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 North Main St., Honesdale, Pa.

Interment will be in the Glen Dyberry Cemetery, Honesdale.
