Susan Pope

NEW YORK — Susan Pope, of Bennett Avenue, New York City, died Jan. 1, 2005, after a courageous battle with colon cancer.

Sue was born July 20, 1945, in New York City to Edgar Bilton and Dorothy (Toombs) Bilton. Raised on Long Island, Sue spent childhood summers at the beach and, as an adult, adopted Montauk as a favored vacation destination.

Per her wishes, her ashes will be scattered over the Atlantic Ocean off Montauk Point in the summer of 2005.

Sue was a graduate of Ithaca College and held a master’s degree in library science from Columbia University. She spent her career as a children’s librarian for the New York Public Library, working in several branches including Inwood and most recently, Jefferson Market.

She loved her job and was a fast friend to decades of schoolchildren who found in her a homework partner and sympathetic ear, no matter what sudden reading project or domestic drama was unfolding in their lives.

She could muster a wide vocabulary of voices and sound effects to make story hour memorable for children of all ages. If you needed a recipe for "oobleck," she was always ready with her apron, green food coloring and wooden spoon.

In 1970, she married John A. Pope, and in 1976, they moved to Sidney. In 1978, Sue was called back to work after a layoff and returned to New York City, where she lived for the rest of her life. Her great friendship with John and the mutual support they gave each other, especially during their daughter’s teenage years, was truly unique.

Sue was a wonderful, generous and kind mother who was never short on ideas of things to do on rainy days, recipes to make for every occasion and endless stories to tell.

Sue is survived by her husband, John; her stepson, Johnny, his wife, Barbara, and their children, of Las Vegas, Nev., whom she adored and had a wonderful friendship with; her daughter, Christina, son-in-law, Robert Bargher, and her beloved granddaughter, Elizabeth Sue, of Sidney; her sister, Elizabeth, and brother-in-law, Ronald Dorfman, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and her incredible niece, Corinne Dorfman of Costa Rica. She is also survived by several friends and family and a special friend, George Havlick, who never let her give up hope.

Not yet 60 at the time of her death, she approached the challenge of her illness with uncommon grace and never lost her habit of always taking care of others first and herself last.

In honor of Sue’s life, we invite you to join the family at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at Our Savior’s Atonement Lutheran Church, 178 Bennett Ave., New York, NY 10040, for a service of remembrance.
