Marion Slauson

ROXBURY — Marion Slauson, 82, of Roxbury passed away Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

Marion was born Feb. 24, 1922, in Vega, the son of Orley Slauson and Effie Morse.

He married Celia Mekinc on Jan. 28, 1951. She predeceased him Nov. 27, 1967.

Marion operated a dairy farm on Stratton Falls Road from 1953 to 1965. He also built Stratton Falls campground, what is now John Bubach’s Trailer Park on Stratton Falls Road.

Marion was also a bus driver for Roxbury Central School and was loved by the children.

Marion is survived by his son, George C. Slauson, Roxbury; grandson, Sean Slauson, Roxbury; granddaughter, Melissa Ferrall, Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Bertha Cammer and Elsie Furman; three brothers, Grant, Virgil and Milton Slauson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers Floyd and Marshall Slauson and sister Hulda Morse.

Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Burial will be in Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Contributions in Marion Slauson’s memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Jeanette Scarzafava Miller

ONEONTA — Jeanette Scarzafava Miller, 67, of Oneonta died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Feb. 3, 1937, in Childs, Pa., the daughter of Francis and Philamena (Morelli) Scarzafava.

Jan graduated from Oneonta High School in 1955 and worked for the New York Telephone Company until they went to dial. She then worked for the Bendix Corporation in Sidney, retiring in 1999 with 30 years of service.

Jeanette was a member of the Ladies of the Elks, Oneonta Lodge No. 1312, where she performed volunteer service. She was also a member of the Sixth Ward Booster Club and belonged to the Rosary Society at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Like her father before her, Jan was committed to enhancing the life of workers and served as a shop steward for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Lodge No. 1529, Sidney. She also served as a committee member for the Democratic Party of the town of Oneonta for many years. She loved politics and never walked away from a good argument. At the time of her illness, she was helping at Riverside Elementary School and served as a member of the city of Oneonta Planning Board.

Jan is survived by her son, Michael Garth Miller, and her daughter, Kathleen Regina Miller, both of Oneonta; a granddaughter, Angela Marie Miller of Oneonta; four brothers, Santo Scarzafava of San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Eugene Scarzafava of St. James City, Fla., John Scarzafava, Esq., of Oneonta and Gary Scarzafava, Esq., of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, RoseAnn Doster of Monroe, Ga., and Lorraine Dickinson of Binghamton; her stepmother, Nettie Scarzafava of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Stephen Moore, associate pastor, officiating.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta. The family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s School Building Fund, c/o St. Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Katherine Ryan Sullivan

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Katherine ("Kay") Ryan Sullivan, 79, of Cooperstown died Friday morning, Jan. 14, 2005, at Otsego Manor.

The youngest of nine children, Kay was born Sept. 25, 1925, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Francis P. and Elizabeth (Cole) Ryan.

She married William A. Sullivan on June 25, 1949, in Yonkers. Mr. Sullivan died April 30, 1996.

In her youth, Kay attended Cooperstown schools and later graduated from Richfield Springs High School. She then attended the Cochran School of Nursing at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers and graduated as a registered nurse. For many years she was employed as a nurse for Dr. Greenly at his offices in Yonkers. In 1981, Kay and her husband moved to Richfield Springs, and she served as head nurse of the B-wing at The Meadows for 10 years. In October of 1995, the couple moved to Cooperstown and made their home on Lake Street. A communicant of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, Kay served as a volunteer at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown and was a member of the advisory board for the new Otsego County skilled nursing facility, Otsego Manor.

Kay is survived by one niece, Barbara Ryan of Albany; two nephews, Robert Ryan of Florida and Edward Ryan of Colorado; and several great nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding.

The Service of Committal and burial will take place at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Richfield Springs.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Saturday morning, prior to the Mass, from 10 to 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 1 Birchwood Drive, Dept. FH, Oneonta, NY 13820-1319.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

NEW LISBON — The parents of John R. Stiefel Jr., who passed away Dec. 28, 2004, in North Carolina, wish to invite family and friends to attend a memorial service at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the Moose Lodge No. 465, West Broadway, Oneonta.

Katherine Christine Flom

ONEONTA — Katherine Christine Flom died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at the Fox Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for seven years.

Christine, as she preferred to be called, was born in Edinburgh, N.D., on May 16, 1936, to Arthur and Catherine Nygaard Flom. She moved to Thief River Falls, Minn., to live with her aunt and uncle, Erikka and Nels Flom, at the age of 6 weeks after the death of her mother. She often talked of the many happy times spent with her stepbrother, Hewitt, as they swam and canoed the rivers that ran through this small community and where she first learned the joys of boating.

After graduating from high school, she attended the University of North Dakota, where she met her future husband, Ramon Henkel. She graduated in 1957. She and her husband lived in Madison, Wis., where Christine continued post-graduate work. In 1962, she was given a Fulbright scholarship and lived in Norway for a year. She returned to the United States and lived in Maryland, where she worked for the Wall Street Journal and had her own commercial art business. Later, she attended the University of Maryland where she earned her doctorate.

In 1972, Christine moved to Oneonta, where she began her career as an art history professor and worked there until her retirement. Christine was a multitalented woman, pursuing many hobbies. She loved tooling around in an old MG and a bright yellow Saab, sailing on Otsego Lake, taking and developing pictures, refinishing and making furniture, and especially loved the company of her pet dogs, Cinder, Fin, Charlie and Sophie. She was a lover of life and had an insatiable curiosity about it. She traveled extensively in her earlier years and would have continued doing so if her health had permitted. Christine was forced to retire from Hartwick College as a result of her declining health, but she never gave up loving life and fought to live, despite her blindness and other illnesses.

She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Alida Flom; a sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Hamilton Hurtt; several nieces and nephews; two aunts and an uncle; her former husband, Ramon Henkel; and Sandra Decker, her friend and companion for many years. She was fortunate to have had a very special friend in Ruth Tarter, who read to her and visited with her on a weekly basis until the time of her death.

Christine will be cremated, and a private service to celebrate her life will be held in the spring in North Dakota, where her ashes will be buried in the family cemetery. Her nephew, the Rev. Matthew Flom, will lead the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Society of Oneonta, where she was a member.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Janet L. Hutson

DELANCEY — Janet L. Hutson, 84, formerly of DeLancey and a resident of the Skywold Manor Adult Home, Meredith, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born Feb. 11, 1920, in DeLancey, the daughter of Robert and Agnes (Dowie) Hutson.

A 1942 graduate of Hartwick College, she was employed as a secretary in the engine products division of the Bendix Corporation of Sidney. She retired after 48 years there. A lifelong DeLancey resident, Janet enjoyed traveling, gardening, flowers and antiques. She especially liked dining out with her friends. She was a member of the Delaware County Historical Association, DeLancey Garden Club, local women’s association, Hamden Senior Citizens and the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church.

She was especially proud of her nephews.

Janet is survived by a sister-in-law, Ruth W. Hutson of DeLancey; three nephews, R. Thomas Hutson of DeLancey, Richard and Nancy Hutson of DeLancey, James W. Hutson of Virginia Beach, Va.; and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her brother, Thomas R. Hutson, in 1995.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place in the spring in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory are asked to be made to the DeLancey Presbyterian Church or the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, P.O. Box 88, Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Arthur R. Tyrrell

DELHI — Arthur R. Tyrrell, 79, a lifelong resident of Delhi, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 14, 2005, at home after a long illness.

He was born in Delhi on Aug. 23, 1925, the son of the late Frederick and Grace Flowers Tyrrell.

He served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater, based in the Tinian Islands, from which he flew missions over Japan.

On Nov. 23, 1946, he married Doris E. Orr in St. Johns Episcopal Church.

He was employed as a heating and plumbing specialist for Dubben Brothers for 16 years, and then was maintenance supervisor at SUNY Delhi from 1961 until he retired in 1985.

He was a member of the Delhi VFW. Art’s main interests were building and carpentry. He remodeled extensively both their previous and present homes. He was also a big fan of the New York Giants and the New York Yankees.

Art is survived by his wife, Doris; a son, R. Jeffrey Tyrrell, and his wife, Karen; three grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan and Michael Tyrrell; a nephew, Dr. Mark Archibald; two nieces, Lisa Donovan and Patricia Cleveland; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his son, Thomas Tyrrell; three brothers, Maurice, Elbridge (Sam) and John Tyrrell; and his sister, Elizabeth Archibald.

A memorial service celebrating Art’s life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at St. Johns Episcopal Church, Delhi, with Deacon Nancy Truscott officiating.

In lieu of calling hours, the family will be present at St. Johns Parish Hall after the memorial service, where refreshments will be served.

Memorial contributions in Art’s memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

George L. Allen

RICHMONDVILLE — George L. Allen, 63, of Smith Road died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at his residence after a long illness.

Mr. Allen was born Dec. 11, 1941, in Bridgeport, Conn., the son of the late Orville Allen and Lillian (Linkletter) Allen, who survive him.

Mr. Allen served as the town of Richmondville highway superintendent from 1987 until retiring in 1997. Before that, he worked for the state Department of Transportation.

He was a United States Navy veteran, serving from 1960 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1964. Mr. Allen was a member of the Warnerville Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In his spare time, George enjoyed woodworking, collecting trains and working on his antique car.

He was predeceased by his sister, Linda Longo, in December 2000.

Survivors include his wife, Joan M. Allen, whom he married Oct. 7, 1995, in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Richmondville; his mother, Lillian (Linkletter) Allen of Oneonta; two daughters, Michelle Davenport of Richmondville and Deborah Winnie of Sharon Springs; a stepson, James M. Hotaling of Richmondville; four grandchildren, Alicia, Amanda and Shelby Davenport of Richmondville, Dustin Winnie of Sharon Springs; three stepgrandchildren, Michael Garcia of Sloansville, Daniel and Gregory Hotaling of Richmondville; two nieces, Amy Longo of Winsted, Conn., and Jenn Petersen of Richmondville.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with the Rev. Gary Edmister of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 17, at the funeral home.

Spring interment will be in Richmondville Rural Cemetery.

Gerda M. Mower

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Gerda M. Mower, 45, died Jan. 12, 2005, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, after a brief illness.

She was born Feb. 9. 1959, in Herkimer to Elisabeth (Thuro) and the late Adam Schanz, also of Richfield Springs.

She attended Richfield Springs Central School. After graduating in 1977, she attended the State University College at Potsdam.

She was employed by several local businesses and operated her own reupholstering business while raising three daughters. For the last 10 years, she managed the Park Inn of Richfield Springs and the West Winfield Tavern.

Recently Gerda enjoyed kayaking on many local lakes and waterways with her fiance, Barry Brownell, family and friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Sarah and Shirley, both of Richfield Springs, and Laura of Litchfield; her fiance, Barry Brownell of Richfield Springs; her mother, Elisabeth (Thuro) Schanz of Richfield Springs; her former husband, Wayne Mower of Richfield Springs; her brother and sister-in-law, Horst and Maggie Schanz of Richfield Springs; her brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Gudrun Schanz of Richfield Springs; her sister, Kathy Schanz of New York City; her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Malcolm MacNaught of Goodyear Lake; her uncle, Philipp Thuro of Roemerberg, Germany; her aunt, Eva Haffner of Richfield Springs; grandchildren, Kyler Mower and Logan Tripple; Andy and Holly Brownell, children of her fiance; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends here in the United States, Canada and Germany.

Gerda was predeceased by her father, Adam Schanz, in 1998.

Calling hours were 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 14, 2005, at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, followed by funeral services at the same location at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, with the Rev. Dwayne Durand of Newport officiating.

Robert J. Mayhood

NORWICH — Robert J. Mayhood, 56, of Horstman Lane, Norwich, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the Chenango Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 13, 1948, in Norwich, the son of the late Merritt Mayhood and Charlotte Bauer Mayhood.

On Jan. 27, 1973, in Norwich, he married Patricia Bryden, who survives.

Besides his wife, Patricia, he is survived by his mother, Charlotte Mayhood, a resident at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford; his children, Lisa and Terry Hendrickson of Sherburne, Rebecca and Jamie Rogers of Georgetown, and Robert and Jackie Mayhood of Norwich; his grandchildren, Kayla and Hunter Hendrickson and Patrick Mayhood; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Donald Mohat of Fulton, Janice and Roger Kent of Norwich, and Margie and John Glynn of Anderson, S.C.; his brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Barbara Mayhood of Oxford; his uncles and aunts, Edmund and Shirley Mayhood of Banning, Calif., Robert and Harriet Mayhood of Endicott, and David Bauer of Norwich; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth Bryden of Schuylerville, Kathy and Tim Forbes of Schuylerville, Geraldine and Terry Stanard of Milford, and Stanley and Patricia Bryden of Oxford. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Bob was a graduate of Norwich Central School, Class of 1967. Following high school he served in the United States Army from 1967-1980.

He was a member of the Alert Hose Company of the Norwich Fire Department for more than 20 years.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a fan of NASCAR racing. He was also a computer buff.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at the Behe Funeral Home Inc., 21 Main St., Oxford, with the Rev. Stephen Reese, pastor of the Columbus Community Church, officiating.

Interment with full military honors will be in the spring in Hamden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford, from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Norwich Fire Department.

Laura Jean Laing

ANDES — Laura Jean Laing, 81, of Andes died Jan. 14, 2005, at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born Laura Jean Linville near Topeka, Kan., on Jan. 31, 1923, and was the daughter of Malcolm and Nellie Jean (Stanford) Linville.

She graduated from Harveyville High School in 1939, and attended Emporia State Teachers College in Emporia, Kan.

She married Sgt. Charles R. Laing of Andes on April 13, 1944, at the First Lutheran Church in Topeka.

In 1952, she and her husband and two young children moved to Andes where she has resided since.

Her husband predeceased her Aug. 1, 1975.

She was employed for 20 years at SUNY Delhi, retiring in 1985 from the library as a member of the clerical staff.

She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving six years as regent and as delegate to the state at Rochester. She also belonged to the ladies auxiliary, Home Bureau, and also served as a leader in the Girl Scouts, Brownies and Cub Scouts.

Immediate family survivors are her son, Charles R. Laing and his wife, Loretta; her daughter, Roxanne Finkle and her husband, Darwin; and granddaughter, Krista Jean Finkle, all of Andes. Other survivors include, two brothers, Dr. Warren Linville of Morro Bay, Calif., and John Linville of Montrose, Colo.; and two sisters, Barbara Snyder of Topeka, Kan., and Margaret Williams of Wichita, Kan.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 17, 2005, at the Andes Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dan McCollister officiating.

Burial will be in Andes Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.
