Carlton L. Bowker

WALTON — Carlton L. Bowker, 74, of Walton passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 15, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, after a long illness.

Carl was born June 13, 1930, in Kortright, the son of the late Rowland and Bessie Dietrich Bowker.

He served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

He was a storekeeper, employed by NYSEG Walton, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of the Walton VFW, Club Royale, where he served as treasurer for many years, and the Apex Sportsman Club. Carl was also a strong supporter of the Walton football team, traveling wherever Walton football was played. He was also a member of the 1949 Walton football team, which was undefeated and unscored upon.

He is survived by a son, Timothy M. Bowker of Walton; two grandchildren, Katherine and Garrett Bowker; three sisters, Dorothy Barnhart, Ruth Bartlett and Marian Hodge, all of Walton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends and relatives are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware County Humane Society, PO Box 88, Delhi, NY 13753.

Gerald S. Bushnell

COOPERSTOWN — Gerald S. Bushnell, retired foreign service officer and active community member of Cooperstown and Doylestown, Pa., died Jan. 14, 2005, at his home in Pine Run Community, Doylestown, Pa. He was 90 years old.

Born in Oneonta, Mr. Bushnell received degrees from Hartwick College and Syracuse University. His career in public service, which took him to Germany, France, Pakistan and Iran, was followed by years of volunteer work in the Cooperstown Rotary Club, the Democratic Party, Bassett Hospital, the Cooperstown School Board and Pine Run Community.

He will always be loved and deeply missed by his wife, Dufie; his four children and their spouses, Susan Bushnell and John Murphy of Lexington, Va., Prudence Bushnell and Richard Buckley of Falls Church, Va., Peter Bushnell and his wife, Elsie Gettleman, of Mishawaka, Ind., and Jonathan Bushnell and Judith Fincham of Kuwait City, Kuwait; as well as by his five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at a later date at the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown to celebrate Gerry’s life.

For those who wish to make a memorial contribution, donations may be made in Gerry’s name to the Doylestown Hospital Hospice, 595 West State St., Doylestown, PA 18901.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Leona D. Sprague

MARGARETVILLE — Leona D. Sprague, 71, of Margaretville, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, in Kingston Hospital, Kingston.

Leona was born May 11, 1933, in Millbrook Valley, Margaretville, the daughter of Frederick Davis and Bessie Ingram.

She married Ray A. Sprague on April 8, 1956, in the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville.

Leona was a superb homemaker; she always had a porch covered with flowers and was a collector of knickknacks.

She is survived by her husband, Ray A. Sprague, Margaretville; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Ann Sprague, Waterloo; one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Charles McNeill, Monroe; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Glenford Davis, Margaretville; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 17, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jeffrey Walsh officiating.

Burial will be in Gavette Cemetery, Millbrook Road, Margaretville, at a later date.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Bassett Cancer Research Center, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Marion E. Howland

COBLESKILL — Marion E. Howland, 96, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, in Cobleskill.

She was born Aug. 21, 1908, in Charlotteville, the daughter of Melvin M. and Maggie (Taber) Germond.

Mrs. Howland grew up in Charlotteville. She spent most of her life living in East Worcester and was a member of the East Worcester United Methodist Church.

In 1999, she moved to the Mt. View Manor in Middleburgh.

She is survived by four children, John (Beatrice) Howland of Esperance, Margot Hewitt of Bryan, Texas, Myrna (Kevin) Bligh of Springville, and Melvin (Carol) Howland of Hobart; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Howland of Cobleskill; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Evelyn Beach of Hartford, Conn.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Howland; a son, Gary Howland; a grandson, Trevor Howland; and a sister, Mildred Keech.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service at the East Worcester Cemetery will be announced in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Howland to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are with the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Michael R. Cario

STAMFORD — Michael Robert Cario, 76, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

He was born in Brooklyn on Jan. 14, 1928, the son of Michael and Rose Cario.

Michael was never married, and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He remained active in the Army Reserves for five years after his discharge. He served as captain of the Copiague Fire Department in Copiague until he relocated to Stamford.

A self-employed real estate broker, Michael set up his own agency in Prattsville until his retirement. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Stamford.

He is survived by his sisters, Evelyn Smith of Stamford and Anita Pierleoni and her husband, Gino, of New Fairfield, Conn. Also surviving are nine nephews, eight nieces, four grandnephews and five grandnieces.

Michael was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Marion.

Services will be private.

Contributions may be made in Michael’s name to the Stamford Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Eloise Piambino

GILBERTSVILLE — Eloise Piambino, 63, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.

Eloise was born on Long Island and moved to Gilbertsville in 1983.

She worked for The Hospital in Sidney and recently retired from the State University at Oneonta, where she worked in the recruiting office.

She was a person with a wide range of interests, but she particularly enjoyed raising and showing dogs. She was active in dog clubs in the area and made many friends in connection with this.

She was a willing volunteer when needed for such things as tutoring at South Kortright Center for Boys or fund-raising projects at The Major’s Inn in Gilbertsville.

Eloise is survived by her son, Frank Piambino of Arizona; and grandchildren, James and Emily. She is also survived by her stepmother; seven brothers; two sisters; 12 nieces and nephews; and two grandnephews.

She was predeceased by her father, Leonard Oman Sr., and two brothers.

Friends of Eloise are invited to come to her home at 371 Chicken Farm Road, between 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, to share some memories. Please call (607) 783-2650 for directions.

Sebastian Saglimbeni

YONKERS — Sebastian J. Saglimbeni, 69, of Yonkers and a former area resident, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at his residence.

He was born in Limina, Italy, on July 20, 1935, the son of Nunziato and Concetta (Lapi) Saglimbeni.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Saglimbeni; two daughters, Tina Occhino and Maria Saglimbeni Caruso; two grandsons, Nicholas and Sebastian Caruso; two brothers, Joseph and Philip Saglimbeni; and two sisters, Carmela Saglimbeni and Maria Fitzgerald.

He was predeceased by a brother, Anthony Saglimbeni.

Calling hours were held Friday, with a Mass of Christian burial Saturday.

Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Arrangements were by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Delbert E. Ramsay

HOBART — Delbert E. Ramsay, 83, a resident of Hearthstone Adult Home, Hobart, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City.

He was born Sept. 29, 1921, in Belmont County, Ohio, the son of Bush and Hassie (Carter) Ramsay.

He worked on a dairy farm in Olean for many years before moving to Hobart.

Delbert loved baseball and played as a youth and watched as an adult. Walking downtown and visiting with villagers along the way was important to him until his health no longer allowed him his jaunts.

Many in town miss his friendly greetings.

A sister, Marie Delong, predeceased him.

His Hearthstone family, and a nephew, Russell Berkhart of Bellaire, Ohio, survive.

A memorial service will take place at the Hearthstone Adult Home, Sheffield Place, Hobart, at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, with the Rev. Lorraine Coscia-Ackerman officiating. All are welcome to attend.

Calling hours will follow the service from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Burial will be in the spring.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Burr D. Harrington

UNADILLA — Burr Doran Harrington, 99, a resident at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, Jan. 16, 2005, in New Berlin.

He was born Nov. 30, 1905, in New Berlin, the son of the late Jay Minor and Angie Shaw Harrington.

Burr was a graduate of the New Berlin High School. He was a longtime New Berlin resident and moved to the Sidney-Unadilla area several years ago.

He began his musical career in 1921, playing with Dick Broas and the Serenaders.

Burr was a policeman for the village of New Berlin in his early years. He was the oldest member of the New Berlin Fire Department and had been an assistant fire chief.

On July 7, 1959, he married Cornelia Mabon Laing in Newton, N.J. She predeceased him July 2, 1998.

Mr. Harrington was a security guard for the E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, retiring in 1970.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country during World War II.

He is survived by his three stepsons and daughters-in-law, William and Doreen Laing of Bainbridge, Gilbert and Ann Laing of Earlville, and Daniel and Sandra Laing of Shepherdsville, Ky.; three stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Helen and John Bramley of Delhi, Joyce and Martin Freyer of Sidney, and Linda Davis and Neil Riddell of Otego; and a cousin, Katherine Burns of Barre, Vt. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

A brother, Lee Harrington, and sister, Alta Dalzer, predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Robert Howard of the Federated Church, Masonville, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Meridale.

Friends are invited to call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel. The New Berlin Fire Department will conduct services Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the New Berlin Fire Department, New Berlin, NY 13411.

Dorothy Ann Myers

HALCOTTSVILLE — Dorothy Ann Myers, 74, of Halcottsville passed away Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at her home.

She was born Aug. 9, 1930, in Queens, the daughter of Robert Leible and Alice McCarthy.

Dorothy married Patrick C. Myers on June 7, 1953, in Flushing. He died Dec. 23, 2004.

Dorothy was a loan officer at the Green Point Savings Bank in Flushing for 23 years. She worked in the mortgage department. She was a permanent resident of Halcottsville for 15 years.

Dorothy is survived by one son, Charles Myers, Halcottsville; one daughter, Dorothy Thalassinos, Pine Bush; two grandchildren, Michael and Victoria; one sister, Marilyn Brunette; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at the funeral home, with the Very Rev. James J. McDevitt officiating.

Burial will be held at a later date in the Halcottsville Cemetery, Halcottsville.

Contributions in memory of Dorothy Ann Myers can be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or Memorial Fund at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville, NY 12455.

Harriet B. Zeidner

SMYRNA — Harriet B. Zeidner, 86, formerly of Route 80, passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home, Norwich.

She was born Dec. 24, 1918, in North Kortright, a daughter of Walter and Jennie Egnor Moxley, and was a graduate of Schenevus High School.

Harriet was united in marriage to Louis F. Zeidner on May 6, 1939. He predeceased her Aug. 11, 2003.

Mrs. Zeidner was a member of the Smyrna United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, canning and baking.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Edward Zirkel of Norwich; four sons and daughters-in-law, Herman and Shirley Zeidner of Unadilla, Richard and Sylvia Zeidner of West Eaton, Ernest and Ann Zeidner of Monticello, and Fred and Susan Zeidner of West Eaton; a sister, Blanche Armour of Louisiana; three sisters-in-law, Helen Moxley of Oneonta, Isabelle Moxley of Lawrence, and Pauline Reynolds of Florida; many grandchildren; and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Verna; two great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Zeidner; and three brothers, Grant, Ira and Howard Moxley.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at the Smyrna United Methodist Church.

Burial will be in the Willcox Cemetery, Smyrna in the spring.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Smyrna Emergency Squad, Smyrna, NY 13464.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 South Main St., Sherburne.
