James W. Dalton

UNADILLA — James W. Dalton II, 65, of Unadilla, formerly of Endicott, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at the Albany Veterans Hospital.

He is survived by Ginger Dalton; children, Kellie and Andy Pope, Jamie and Wayne Jones, James W. Dalton III and his fiancee, Kerry Donegan; three grandchildren, Kali Jones and Michael and Chelsea Pope; very special friend, Allie; brothers, Paul and Camille Howard, Jack and Bobbi Dalton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of Sidney Lodge No. 277 Order of the Moose, past president of the Johnson City Eagles Club, a veteran serving with the United States Navy, a member of American Legion Post 183, Sidney, and V.F.W. Post 7914, Sidney, and the Masonville Rod & Gun Club, Masonville.

A memorial service will be held for his friends in Sidney at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at the V.F.W. Post 7914, W. Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City, at the convenience of the family.

The family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.

Edward C. Simonds

OSWEGO — Edward C. Simonds, 93, a resident at St. Luke’s Health Services, Oswego, and formerly of 26 Hatfield Ave., Sidney, passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 16, 2005, in Oswego.

He was born Oct. 7, 1911, in Oneonta, the son of the late Howard M. and Belva L. Green Simonds.

On March 1, 1935, he married Alice M. Frederick in Oneonta. She predeceased him Dec. 16, 2001.

Edward was a tool inspector for the E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, for 35 years. He retired March 20, 1976.

He was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Sidney.

He is survived by his son, Frederick Lyle Simonds of Freedom, Pa.; his daughter, Evelyn Fenley of West Monroe; two grandchildren, Mark and Kara Simonds; and a great-granddaughter, Arielle Simonds.

A brother, Francis Simonds, and a sister, Marguerite Smith, predeceased him.

Services will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Catherine M. Willis

CORTLAND — Mrs. Catherine ("Katy") Martindale Willis, 92, of Ithaca and formerly of Cooperstown died Monday evening, Jan. 17, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Mary-Lou Johnson, on Gallagher Road in Cortland.

Katy was born June 11, 1912, in Brooklyn, a daughter of Maurice Decator Martindale and Caroline Brott Martindale. At the age of 3, Katy and her family moved to Ithaca, living in their home on Cook Street, which also served as her father’s funeral home.

She graduated from Ithaca High School with the Class of 1928 and attended the Ithaca Conservatory of Music during and after her high school years. She studied violin there and at one time played with the Ithaca Orchestra.

On Aug. 22, 1931, Katy married Wayne Ernest Willis in Ithaca. After living in Odessa and Syracuse, she and her husband moved to Cooperstown in 1947, where Mr. Willis served as the Otsego County 4-H Agent until his retirement in 1970.

Katy was first employed as a switchboard operator for Treadway Inn at The Otesaga, and later became the assistant manager at The Otesaga in the winter and manager of the Cooper Inn during the summer.

The family first lived in Bowerstown and later built a house on the corner of Pioneer and Beaver Street in the village of Cooperstown.

She also sold real estate in Cooperstown with Gordon S. Winnie, was active in the Cooperstown Women’s Club, the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce, volunteered at the gift shop at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, and managed the gift shop at The Farmers’ Museum.

A love of antiques and history guided Katy throughout her life. For approximately 10 years, she owned and operated Leatherstocking Country Store on Main Street in Cooperstown. When she and her husband moved back to Ithaca, she reopened this store there under the same name. She later closed the store in Ithaca when she and Mr. Willis returned to Cooperstown, and then opened Grandma’s Attic on Main Street in Cooperstown.

They made their home on Pioneer Street across from the First Presbyterian Church. In 1985, Catherine and her husband retired, returning to Ithaca. In their retirement years, they remained active in the antiques field and continued participating in shows throughout New York and Pennsylvania.

Beginning at the age of 12 in Ithaca, Katy was actively involved with Girl Scouting. During her years in Cooperstown, she was instrumental in forming the local Girl Scout Council and, during her term as president, had the honor of awarding her daughters, Patricia and Mary-Lou, the Curved Bar, which at the time was the highest award given in Girl Scouts.

Katy was a life member and Past Matron of the former Athena Chapter No. 363, Order of the Eastern Star, having been a member of this chapter for more than 50 years. She was also a member of the Varna Senior Citizens.

For many years, she was active with the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, where she and her husband were involved with the couples club and in putting on their once-popular minstrel shows.

She was baptized into Christ on May 18, 2003, by the Finger Lakes Church of Christ.

Katy is survived by two daughters, Patricia Carl of Ithaca and Mrs. Mary-Lou Johnson and her husband, James R. Johnson, of Cortland; three daughters-in-law, Nancy Muniz of Virginia and Carmen Stewart and Linda Flynn of Florida; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mary Potter of Ithaca; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wayne Ernest Willis (1907-1989); two sons, Robert Wayne Willis (1934-1994), and Richard Lynn Willis (1941-1964); two grandchildren, Alan (1954-1994) and Karen (1957-1992); and one sister, Dorothy Hines, who died in 1990.

A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at the Finger Lakes Church of Christ, located in the chapel on the grounds of the George Junior Republic in Freeville, with the Rev. Arthur Barry, minister, officiating.

There will also be a Service of Homegoing at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at the Calvary Baptist Church, located at 507 North Albany St., Ithaca.

Later this spring, an Order of the Eastern Star service, conducted by members of the Otsego-Hartwick-Arbutus Chapter No. 201, O.E.S., Cooperstown, will be conducted at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown. Friends will be able to call at the funeral home one hour before the service.

Burial will be private in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Finger Lakes Church of Christ, 9 Highland Drive, Dryden, NY 10353.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Victor P. Bobnick

ROTTERDAM — Victor P. Bobnick Sr., 90, of Palma Avenue passed away Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at St. Clares Hospital, Schenectady.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late John and Helen Petrovic Bobnick.

He married his beloved wife, Mary Natale, on Dec. 13, 1953, in Worcester. Mrs. Bobnick passed away April 11, 1999.

The couple had resided in the local area for more than 35 years. Victor was employed by General Electric as a carpenter and retired in 1976. He greatly enjoyed woodworking and walking in the woods. For several years, he was a member of the IUE Bowling League.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church, Worcester, and Our Lady of Assumption Church, Rotterdam.

Victor is survived by his son, Victor P. Bobnick of Rotterdam; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers, Joseph, Louis, Stanley and John Bobnick, and sisters, Vicki Dolan, Helen Mattice, Dorothy PodPadec, Frances Holly and Eleanor Skinner.

Family and friends are invited to call at the DeMarco Stone Funeral Home Inc., 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Worcester, Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005.

Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Worcester, in the spring.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Church, 181 Main St., Worcester, NY 12197.

Philip J. Seymour

BAINBRIDGE — Philip J. Seymour Sr., 81, of Bainbridge passed away Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.

He was born Nov. 4, 1923, son of the late Francis and Helen (Hager) Seymour in Deposit.

Philip worked on the family farm in Johnny Brook until the Cannonville Reservoir was established and they moved to Bainbridge.

Philip married Dorothy Gray on July 29, 1944, and they eventually owned and operated the dairy farm for many years. Mr. Seymour also was employed by the Sidney Central School as a bus driver and recently as a bus monitor.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sidney, where he was a former deacon for several years as well as teaching 5-6 grade Sunday school. Mr. Seymour was also an avid photographer.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Seymour, Bainbridge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Philip and Pamela Seymour Jr., Vermont, and Gary and Linda Seymour, Bainbridge; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Wayne Marble, Binghamton, Faith and Ron Horne, Ohio, and Lois Dumond and Larry Cerverizzo, Bainbridge; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Dorothy Seymour, Bainbridge, and Keith and Helen Seymour, Tennessee; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also predeceased by a brother, Francis A. Seymour.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, Sidney, with the Rev. Kenneth Southworth, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Sidney, River Street, Sidney, NY 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Laura M. Cross

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Laura M. Cross, 89, of Cooperstown and formerly of West Winfield died Monday night, Jan. 17, 2005, at Otsego Manor.

Laura was born on June 3, 1915, in the town of Plainfield, a daughter of Glenn F. and Fannie (Larabee) Monroe.

She married C. Maynard Cross in 1938 in West Winfield. Mr. Cross died in September 1978. Raised in West Winfield, she was a graduate of West Winfield Central School. Throughout her married life, she assisted her husband in the restaurant business, especially with a small restaurant in West Winfield and in operating Millers, which was located on the west shore of Otsego Lake.

While living in Cooperstown, they operated a guest house out of their home at the corner of Lake Street and Nelson Avenue.

Laura was also employed as a nurse’s aide in the psychiatric department of the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

In 1978, the Crosses moved from Cooperstown to West Winfield, where Laura continued to live, even after her husband’s death that same year. For the past four years, she had been a resident of Woodside Hall in Cooperstown.

Laura is survived by her son, Kernan M. Cross, and his wife, Jane, of Boothbay Harbor, Maine; one grandson, Jacob Cross of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Mildred Skinner of Fort Myers, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one son, David T. Cross, who died in 1986.

A memorial service to honor Laura’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at Woodside Hall in Cooperstown. Please note that the family will not be in attendance.

A graveside service will be conducted, with the family in attendance, later this spring in Unadilla Forks Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 1 Birchwood Drive, Department FH, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Gerald Adamowicz

ALBANY — Gerald H. Adamowicz, beloved by generations, family and friends, Jerry passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.

Jerry was born on July 18, 1940, in the little town of Apex, where he lived with his parents for the first 4 years of his life. At 5, he moved with his parents to Oneonta.

Jerry attended St. Mary’s School for six years and then went to Oneonta Junior High School and graduated from Oneonta High School. He also attended Manlius Military Academy. After high school, Jerry enlisted in the United States Navy.

Upon his return to civilian life, he married Molly Foster (they were married for five years).

Jerry was employed by LynCoach and Truck Company where he started as a draftsman and worked his way up to production manager. After leaving LynCoach, he worked for a short time for Oneonta Bus Lines and then went on to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a Greyhound bus driver. While at Greyhound, he became a driver instructor and an operations supervisor. During slow periods at Greyhound, Jerry drove tractor-trailer for various companies.

Jerry’s career was cut short at the age of 38 when he had his first heart attack.

His second marriage to Ellen Canary lasted 21 years. To keep himself busy in his retirement, Jerry was the official Santa for Chatham for 12 years. He volunteered at the Mac-Haydn Theatre in Chatham for seven years.

He went to the car auctions with Butch Lippera of Lippera Pre-owned Autos, where Butch would let Jerry bid on the cars for him — Jerry also loved to travel in his motorhome with Mary Ann — and when he was at home, he enjoyed reading and using his computer.

Jerry sold his home in East Chatham and has been residing at Embury Apartments, a retirement community in Saratoga Springs, for the last few years.

Jerry leaves behind his significant other, Mary Ann Schweikert; a daughter, Beth Jorns, from his first marriage; and a son, Gerald K. Adamowicz; and a daughter, Jennifer Miller, from his second marriage. Jerry had four granddaughters, Chelsy and Courtney Adamowicz and Jennifer and Brittany Jorns.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends may call from 1 until 3 p.m. Friday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the American Heart Association.

Funeral arrangements are by the Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Virginia E. Spencer

GILBERTSVILLE — Virginia E. Spencer, 79, of Gilbertsville passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born July 15, 1925, daughter of the late Floyd D. and Nellie May (Hoosier) Roe in Hobart.

Virginia married Bernie Spencer on Feb. 9, 1943, in Oneonta. He predeceased her March 1, 1984.

She worked as a housekeeper in the area for many years.

Mrs. Spencer is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Floyd and Beatrice Spencer, Mount Upton, and Gary and Sue Spencer, Sidney; two daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn and Melvin Sutton, Bainbridge, and Beverly and Sam Rowe, Gilbertsville; one sister and brother-in-law, Clara and Edward Bauer, Albany; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also predeceased by brother, Leslie Roe.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, in C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder officiating.

Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Upton, in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad.
