Anna Maerz

OTEGO — Anna Maerz, 81, of the Otsdawa, Otego, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at Fox Care Nursing Home of complications from pneumonia and a stroke that she suffered just before Christmas.

Anna was born June 26, 1923, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and was married to William Maerz, who survives her.

Anna and Bill began their life together as husband and wife on Dec. 7, 1941, in East Meadow, and celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this past December. She lived with her husband on Long Island for 10 years where they were blessed with two children, Linda and James, who also survive her.

In 1952, Anna moved with her family to upstate New York and they settled in Otego. In addition to raising her family, Anna was a dressmaker in Oneonta for many years and also worked as a private home-care aid for several years before retiring.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Oneonta.

In the years after she retired, Anna lived a full life. She survived a crash in which her ambulance was hit head-on by a van and two open-heart surgeries to correct damage to her heart caused when she contracted rheumatic fever as a child.

To all who knew her, Anna will be remembered for many things but especially for her concern and compassion for other people — both those in her family as well as friends and neighbors. This was a trait that she also did her best to pass on to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Anna loved to travel and throughout her life she traveled to many of the states in the United States, including Hawaii, as well as Canada, Mexico and overseas to France, Austria, Lichtenstein, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Hong Kong, China and Japan.

She enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, cooking large family dinners and shopping. She also enjoyed collecting miniature souvenir spoons, collecting more than 200 of them from around the world.

Anna was the daughter of the late Michael Koval and the late Mary Lotocke Koval. Anna was predeceased by her brother, Peter Koval; her son-in-law, Earl Bruce Crawford Jr.; a nephew, Ronald Miller; and her brother-in-law, Dick Lent.

Anna is survived by many family members who will miss her terribly, but consider themselves tremendously blessed by her presence in their lives. She is survived by her husband, William (Bill) Maerz of Otego; her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and William Schraft, also of Otego; her son and daughter-in-law, James and Gloria Maerz of Katy, Texas; two sisters, a brother and their spouses, Irene and Vinnie Miller of Unadilla, Frances Lent, also of Unadilla, and Joseph and Lila Koval of Florida; and eight grandchildren and their spouses, Sharon and Richard Easley of Ashburn Va., Debbie and Tino Garufi of Oneonta, Susan and Glen Blanton of Ft. Bragg, N.C., Ellen and Jay Kasian of Otego, Dianna and Tim Bolton of Houston, Texas, Stephen Maerz, also of Texas, Amy and Mike Packard of Otego, and Angela and Keith Holley of Baker, Fla.
