Bruce W. Walker

TREADWELL — Bruce W. Walker Sr., 76, of Treadwell passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born July 27, 1928, in New York City, the son of Kenneth and Charlotte (Donaldson) Walker.

He married Joan Smith on Nov. 17, 1951, in New York City.

Bruce served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

For a period of 22 years, retiring in 1979, he worked for Feuer Transportation in Yonkers.

He was of the Episcopal faith and a member of the Teamsters Union.

Bruce was well-known locally for antique restoration, repairing clocks and caning chairs.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Walker of Treadwell; his children, Louise Ann Auger and her husband, Thomas, of New York City, Alice Elizabeth Calandresa of Oneonta and Bruce Walker Jr. of Treadwell; and one grandchild, Jessica Elizabeth Calandresa of Oneonta.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Richard A. Kenyon

EAST MEREDITH — Funeral services for Richard A. Kenyon, 86, of East Meredith will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at the Bloomville United Methodist Church, Bloomville.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the family in attendance.

He passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at home.

Raymond S. Brown Jr.

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Raymond S. Brown Jr., 81, of Cooperstown died unexpectedly Tuesday evening, Jan. 18, 2005, at his home on Middlefield Center Road.

Ray was born Oct. 27, 1923, in Dobbs Ferry, a son of Raymond S. Brown Sr. and Katherine T. Brown. Raised in Dobbs Ferry, he graduated from the Dobbs Ferry High School and was then employed for six months by the local A&P.

On Oct. 14, 1942, he entered into active service with the United States Army and proudly served his country during World War II with the 143rd Ordinance Medium Maintenance Company. He was involved with action in New Guinea and received the American and Asiatic-Pacific Service Medals, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.

Upon receiving his honorable discharge from the military Feb. 1, 1946, he moved to South Kortright, where his mother and father owned and operated a dairy farm on Roses Brook Road.

While living in South Kortright, he met his future wife, Frida Norberg, and they married July 31, 1948, at the Roman Catholic Church of the Most Precious Blood in South Kortright.

For 40 years, Ray was employed by the dairy farmers co-operative Dairylea and was responsible for many milk plants, including those in South Kortright, Milford, Cobleskill and Mt. Upton. During this time, the Browns first lived in South Kortright, moving in 1964 to Susquehanna Avenue in Cooperstown. In 1976, Ray and Frida moved to Adams and lived there until his retirement as an area manager in 1986. They returned to Cooperstown that same year and settled in their home on Middlefield Center Road.

In his retirement years, Ray was employed on a part-time basis from 1986 until 2000 as one of the "red coats" at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown. He was currently serving as a court attendant with the Otsego County Sheriff’s Department in the Otsego County Court House.

Of the Catholic faith, he was a communicant of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown. He was also an active and devoted member of the Lions Club of Cooperstown, having been a member since February of 1985 and serving as president of the club in 1996 and 1997.

Ray was honored to have served his country during World War II and demonstrated this commitment by being a loyal member and current adjutant of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown. On the county level, he was currently serving as the senior vice commander and acting council commander of the Otsedela VFW Council.

He will be missed by his family, co-workers, fellow Lions and veterans and friends.

Ray is survived by four daughters, Kathleen A. Brown of San Jose, Costa Rica, Eileen F. Brown of Victor, Martha Sherwood and her husband, Charles, of Cherry Valley and Carol Morales and her husband, Alejandro, of Tarrytown; two sons, Thomas R. Brown and his wife, Nancy, of Ithaca and Paul D. Brown and his wife, Linda, of Irvington, Va.; six granddaughters, Andrea Brown, Frida and Celia Brown, and Leah, Valeria and Renata Morales; one sister, Mrs. June Perby of Rosedale, L.I.; one brother, William S. Brown and his wife, Frances, of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Anne Buck of East Meredith, Mrs. Esther Lee of Venice, Fla., Mrs. Alice Nichols of Bloomville and Mrs. Jeane Norberg of Oneonta; one brother-in-law, Sven E. Sloth and his wife, Ingrid, of Oneonta; and many, many nieces and nephews.

Ray was predeceased by his wife, Frida, who died Aug. 28, 1994, and one brother, John Edgar Brown.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding.

The Service of Committal and burial, with military honors, will be conducted at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Index.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, when Ray’s family will be in attendance.

It is desired that, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts be made to Ray’s favorite charity, The Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers, P.O. Box 306, Maryknoll, NY 10545-0306. Please specify that your gift go towards the Mission Account for Fr. Joe Thaler, M.M. or, you may donate to a charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Elmer E. Junge

WALTON — Elmer E. Junge, 83, of Walton passed away at home Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, after a long illness

Mr. Junge was born in Queens on July 8, 1921, the son of the late Gustav A. and Sarah Geiges Junge.

He married the former Helen Devenish at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn on Sept. 18, 1943. He was a pattern cutter, employed by Ace Plastics in Jamaica, Queens.

He is survived by two daughters, Eileen Esposito and her husband, John, of Walton and Kathleen Peters and her husband, Richard, of Patchogue, L.I.; six grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 17 step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one step-great-grandchild; one brother, Wilbur Junge and his wife, Virginia, of Lake Ronkonkoma; a cousin, Rita Martin of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Helen, in 1979; two sisters, Ann McAnaney and Mae Ruppel; and a brother, Harold Junge.

People often described Elmer as "such a sweet man." His great pastime was paint by numbers and he freely gave gifts of his talent to friends and family. His favorite painting was the "Last Supper." He also volunteered his time at home to his parish, St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Walton.

Friends and relatives are invited to call at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Sunday at the Robertaccio Funeral Home Inc., 85 Medford Ave, Patchogue, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:45 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Ronkonkoma.

Burial will be in Pinelawn Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Junge’s memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Janice C. Evans
WEST ONEONTA — Janice Charlotte Evans, 68, died Saturday morning, Jan. 22, 2005, after a lengthy illness at the Otsego Manor in Cooperstown, where she had been a resident since November 2004.Janice was born Nov. 3, 1936, the daughter of James and Edith (Holbrook) Fuller.Janice was a lifelong resident of West Oneonta. She married Howard B. Evans on June 30, 1962, in West Oneonta.Janice worked at the State University College at Oneonta in the Morris Hall cafeteria as a cook in her early years. She was a wonderful cook and baker. Janice won an award for her brown sugar cookies while employed at SUCO.In recent years, Janice enjoyed spending time with family. She enjoyed playing games with her grandchildren and family, especially Jenga blocks, dominoes and Tic-Tac-Toe. She would spend hours playing games with her grandson.Janice will be greatly missed by her family, especially by her grandchildren. She had a great love of animals and enjoyed all her grandchildren’s pets.Janice is survived by her husband, Howard Evans; two daughters, Lorraine Evans of West Oneonta and Laura and her husband, David Reilly, of West Oneonta; one son, Norman Evans of DeLancey; two grandchildren, Lori and William Reilly; two sisters, Pauline Locke of Oneonta and Glendora Heller of Oneonta; and many nieces and nephews.Besides her parents, James and Edith Fuller, Janice was predeceased by her brother, Glenn Fuller of West Oneonta.Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home in Oneonta.The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Steven P. Ruby (Lane) Lowe
CANAJOHARIE — Ruby (Lane) Lowe, a longtime resident of Prospect Street in Canajoharie, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at the Palatine Nursing Home after a short illness. She was 95 and had been a resident of the nursing home since November 2003. Born in the town of Sharon on March 31, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Effie (Foland) Lane.She attended a one-room schoolhouse in the hamlet of Center Valley (Otsego County) and later graduated from the Austin Beauty School in Schenectady.For 10 years, she owned and operated her own beauty shop in Canajoharie. Subsequently, she worked for Beechnut Life Savers, Inc. in Canajoharie for more than 30 years, retiring in 1974.She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and knitting. Mrs. Lowe would often make handmade "Teddy Bears" to give away as gifts. Her most enjoyable time was spent with her beloved cat, Itchy.Survivors include two nephews, Edward Hazzard of Cooperstown and James Hazzard of Sharon Springs; four nieces, Evelyn Cutter of Cherry Valley, Anna Mae LaMantia of Gloversville, Barbara Cousineau of Sharon Springs and Joanne Simmons of Havelock, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Lane of Sharon Springs; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.Her husband, Harold S. Lowe, died in 1989, after 60 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by eight sisters, Frances Hazzard, Laura Cummings, Anna Doyle, Grace Dornburgh, Marguerite Doolittle, Beatrice Lowe, Elizabeth Whitbeck and Florence Herman; and three brothers, Stanley, Theron and Alva Lane.A spring graveside service will be held in Slate Hill Cemetery, town of Sharon.Cremation will be at Vale Cemetery Crematorium, Schenectady.Memorial contributions may be made to the Palatine Nursing Home Activities Fund, in care of Barbara Loske, PO Box 425, Palatine Bridge, NY 13428.Arrangements are by Lappeus Funeral Home, Sharon Springs.

Richard O. Foster
GILBERTSVILLE — Richard O. Foster, 64, of Okeechobee, Fla., and formerly of Gilbertsville and Morris, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at Shand’s Teaching Hospital in Gainesville, Fla., after an extended illness.He was born July 12, 1940, the son of William O. and Lois (Musson) Foster.He served his country in the United States Army and was a graduate of SUNY at Oneonta.He had worked as a draftsman for Medical Coach of Oneonta for several years and a surveyor for the past few years before his semi-retirement.He was well-known locally for his photographic skills and interests. He designed the exhibits for the Gilbertsville Historical Association Museum and was a trustee for many years of the Gilbertsville Free Library. Dick was a very active member of the Morris Rotary Club until his relocation to Florida. Since moving to Florida, he continued to work on a part-time basis for Scott’s Lumber Company.He was also a member of the Retreads Motorcycle Club and had served on the Butternuts Town Board.Dick is survived by his soulmate of many years, Anna Dotey, of Okeechobee, Fla.; his siblings, Glenn Foster and his wife, Rose, of Gilbertsville, Arlene Gavitt of Alton, Va., and Steve Foster and his wife, Jacqueline, of Gilbertsville; as well as many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and -nephews.He was predeceased by both his parents.There will be no calling hours.A memorial service to celebrate Dick’s life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville with the Rev. Randolph Palada officiating.Memorial contributions may be made in Dick’s memory to the Gilbertsville Free Library, Commercial Street, Gilbertsville, NY 13776 or the Morris Rotary Club, Morris, NY 13808.Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Norman E. Wright
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Norman Ellsworth Wright, 84, died suddenly while visiting family in Glendale, Ariz., Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005. Norm was born Dec. 3, 1920, to Maude DuBois and Clemens Wright on Long Island.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Blakely in North Africa and the North Atlantic. During a brief furlough from the service, he married his sweetheart, Lillian Leiblein. They shared 58 years and three children together. Norm worked for Grumman Aerospace for 25 years while they lived in Freeport and North Merrick and was honored to have
worked on the lunar excursion module project. After retirement, they enjoyed several carefree years traveling about the country in their RV, seeing new places and making new friends. When the desire to settle down returned, they called Cooperstown their home for the next 10 years, where Norm enjoyed
golfing, making woodworking items and having a wonderful community of friends. He also volunteered at Bassett Hospital, St. Mary’s Church and Habitat for Humanity. After the death of his wife, he relocated to Port Charlotte, Fla., to be near his eldest son. He is survived by two sisters; two sons, David and Bud; one daughter, Teresa Lynch; eight grandchildren and one great-
granddaughter. A memorial service will be held in Port Charlotte, March 21, 2005, where his ashes will be interred alongside Lil’s. A memorial service will be planned in the spring in Cooperstown. Contributions may be made in his memory to Habitat for Humanity.

Howard M. Mills
NINEVEH — Howard M. Mills, 71, of Decker Road, Nineveh, passed away Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City.He was born Jan. 19, 1934, in New Milford, Conn., the son of the late Merton and Leona Butler Mills. He was a graduate of Sidney Central School.On Jan. 28, 1956, he married Frances Whitworth in England.For 23 years, Howard was in the United States Air Force, retiring June 30, 1975. He served his country during Vietnam.After his retirement, he was a driver for Schneider Trucking. He was a life member and a past commander of the Afton VFW Post 53269 and a member of the U.S. Air Force Association.Howard was a kind and loving man and enjoyed conversation with other people. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing. Mr. and Mrs. Mills loved to travel and visit family and friends.He is survived by his loving wife, Frances Mills, of Nineveh; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynette and Edward Houck of Oxford and Diane and Ronald Swenson of Sherman, Texas; sister, Hazel Charles of Masonville; stepsister, Juanita Charles of Casa Grande, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.A brother, Orville Schneider; and two sisters, Grace Winner and Nellie Moore, predeceased Howard.Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Robert Howard, pastor of the Federated Church of Masonville, officiating.Burial will be later with full military honors in the Glenwood Cemetery, Afton.Friends are invited to call Wednesday at their convenience at the funeral chapel, with his family in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Patient Care Fund at the New York State Veterans Home, 4211 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY 13830-4305.

Laurence B. Chase
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Laurence B. Chase, 54, of Walnut Street entered into eternal rest Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in his home.He was born Nov. 15, 1950, in Oneonta, son of the late Charles Watson and Jessie Dorothy Weidman.A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of New Berlin Central School, Class of 1969.He had resided in Richfield Springs since 1972, coming from West Edmeston.On Sept. 18, 1998, he was united in marriage with Patricia Purcell in Richfield Springs. For 21 years he was a welder for Mohawk Metals in Frankfort and was currently employed with F.S. Gromarks in Sangerfield.He will be greatly missed by many and will never be forgotten.Surviving besides his loving wife, Patricia, are one daughter, Kristie Chase of Albany; a stepdaughter, Renee Hugick of Richfield Springs; five brothers and their wives, Russell and Leatrice Chase of Earlville, Chester and Mary Chase of Taberg, Marvin and Linda Chase of Hamilton, David and Amber Chase of Mount Morris, Mich., and William and Grace Chase of Sherburne; four sisters, Elsie Lund of Burlington Flats, Rita McLean of Sylvan Beach, the Rev. Diane Pearl of Oneida, and Katherine and her husband, Edwin, of West Edmeston; several nieces, nephews and cousins.Besides his parents, a brother, Ernest Chase, preceded him in death.The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs to receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today. A funeral service will begin at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Monty J. Seamon
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Monty J. Seamon, 30, entered into eternal rest as a result of a farming accident Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.He was born Jan. 1, 1975, in Cooperstown, son of Monty G. and Patsy Wiltsey Seamon. A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School.For the past three years, he had worked for Titan Homes in Sangerfield.All who knew Monty will always remember his warm smile. He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.Surviving are his father, Monty G. Seamon and his wife, Candace, of Richfield Springs; his mother, Patsy, and her husband, Larry Schoff, of St. Johnsville; paternal grandparents, Louis and Marie Seamon; maternal grandparents, Ed and Norma Wiltsey; his fiancee, Rustina Helping; a brother, Todd E. and his wife, Michelle, Seamon, all of Richfield Springs; two sisters and their husbands, Sarah and Charles Murphy of Nelliston, and Kimberly and Wayne Handy of St. Johnsville; stepgrandparents, Wesley and Marie Maine of Ilion; a stepbrother, Joshua Tucker of Richfield Springs; four stepsisters, Kayleigh Tucker of Richfield Springs, Ashley Doolen of Little Falls, Tiffany Schoff of New York City and Taiya Schoff of Albany; six uncles, four aunts, many cousins; and close friends, Joey Marriott and Billy Bassett.The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, to receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. A funeral service will begin at 7 p.m. with the Rev. William G. Aitken

ANDES — William Gordon Aitken, 91, of Andes and Watertown, passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

The son of James T. and Margaret (Hughes) Aitken, he was born Oct. 28, 1913, in Andes, where he spent his early life.

A United States Navy veteran, he served in the Pacific during World War II, later marrying Mary (Cook) Lucas in 1960. She died in 2003.

A union plumber and steamfitter by trade, he was a Watertown, Jefferson County, area resident for 40 years, also maintaining a seasonal home on Cabin Hill, Andes, where he enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing. He was proud of the fact that one of the earliest pistol permits in Delaware County was issued to him.

A longtime Mason and Shriner, he was a member of Rising Light Lodge No. 637, F. & A.M., in Belleville, and a 65-year member of Oswego Plumbers and Steamfitters Union.

Surviving are a stepson, James A. Lucas of Watertown; two grandchildren, Carl Lucas of Dunedin, Fla., and Christine Trojan of Dover, N.H.; and a nephew, Jake Aitken of Newburgh.

He was predeceased by a sister, Olive Wilson, and two brothers, James and Charles Aitken.

Private services and burial will be in the Brookside Cemetery, Watertown, at the convenience of the family, next spring.

Memorial contributions to Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.
