Elsie Rumenapp

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Elsie Rumenapp, 81, died Jan. 24, 2005, at home, 8312 Bellmon Ave., Oklahoma City, Okla.

She was born Aug. 25, 1923, and lived in Oneonta and raised her family there.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, of 58 years.

Survivors include children, Jeanette Tibbetts (Florida), Linda Harrington, Kathy Barrett and George Rumenapp (Oklahoma); several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service is planned.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society.

Anne T. Higgins

ONEONTA — Anne T. Higgins, 77, formerly of Oneonta and most recently of Otsego Manor in Cooperstown, passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 24, 1927, in the Bronx, the daughter of John J. and Mary (Johnson) Reilly.

For a period of 25 years, retiring in 1985, Anne was employed as an accountant for Nassau County.

She has lived in this area since 2000, when she moved here from Florida.

Anne was very active in her community, as well as public and social endeavors. She was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and a Democratic committeewoman in Floral Park. While living in Florida, she was very active in senior citizen groups.

She is survived by her husband, Edson Colson of Cooperstown; her children, Edson Colson of Jessup, Ga., and Marcey Hoffman and her husband, Raymond, of Oneonta; six grandchildren, Sandele Wenzel, Steven Colson, Tricia Green, Sally Nordstrom, Shawn Nordstrom and B.J. Nordstrom; sisters and a brother, Agnes Carney of Tennifly, N.J., Dorothy Behr of Floral Park, Maureen Hayberg of Elmira and Jack Reilly of Hicksville; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Otsego Manor Activity Department, 128 Phoenix Mills Cross Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

William L. Wright

BLOOMVILLE — William L. "Billy" Wright, 63, of Bloomville and Davenport passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep at home in Bloomville on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005.

The son of the late William E. and Martha (Lynn) Wright, he was born Nov. 28, 1941, in the Bronx and served in the National Guard.

A former longtime Bergen County, N.J., resident, "Billy" was a decorated police officer, retiring after 26 years of service with the Harrington Park Police. He was a past chief and a lifetime member of Harrington Park Volunteer Fire Department: N.J. State Firemen’s Association; the Honor Legion, Police Departments, State of New Jersey; and Delaware County "Shields." H was also a member of American Suffolk Horse Association, his enduring passion was training and caring for horses.

A Delaware County resident since the early 1990s, he maintained his home, "Shamrock Farms," in Davenport, but had been residing in Bloomville for the past five years.

Surviving are two sons, William D. Wright of Pineville, N.C., and James P. Wright of Spring Hill, Fla.; five grandchildren; a brother, David Wright of Lakeville, Conn.; a sister, Martha Dochat-Lynch of Mechanicville; nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Carol P. Sheppard, Land O’ Lakes, Fla.

He was predeceased last August by his friend and companion, Ida Mae (Quackenbush) Decker of Bloomville.

Friends are invited to call 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bloomville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Lenz officiating. "Billy" will be laid to rest beside Ida Mae in the Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Memorial contributions to Harrington Park Volunteer Fire Department, 13 Kline St., Harrington Park, NJ 07640, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Ivan C. Mauer

SIDNEY CENTER — Ivan C. Mauer, a longtime Sidney Center resident, died Jan. 22, 2005, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where he had been residing. He was 92.

Ivan Mauer was born March 21, 1912, in Granton to Edward and Julia Albright Mauer.

On May 6, 1935, he married Madge Leschorn in Halifax, Va. She predeceased him July 3, 1995.

The Mauers owned and operated a dairy farm on Russell Road, Walton, from 1943 to 1960. Mr. Mauer then worked on construction of the Cannonsville reservoir and for the village of Walton for a few years. He retired in 1977 after working about 10 years for the Walton Agway store service department.

Ivan Mauer was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed collecting and restoring antique gasoline engines. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to other antique gas engine enthusiasts.

Ivan Mauer is survived by his daughters, Phyllis Currey, Norwich, and Arlene Maye, Old Saybrook, Conn.; and a son, Burr Mauer, Walton. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife of 60 years, he was predeceased by brothers Ernest, Irvin and Kenneth Mauer, and a sister, Betty Jones.

It was Mr. Mauer’s wish that there be no calling hours, and a private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in Walton Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice in the name of Ivan C. Mauer.

Ruth V. Otello

ONEONTA — Ruth V. Otello, 92, of Oneonta and a former resident of Nader Towers and Robynwood passed away Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 10, 1912, in Mt. Claire, Neb., the daughter of Gilbert O. and Ella (Brinkerhoff) Decker.

She married Joseph L. Otello on April 2, 1946, and he passed away June 15, 1970.

For most of her life, Ruth was a homemaker. She was also an independent seamstress, contracting for several area clothing stores and bridal shops.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Church.

In her younger years, she was affiliated with the Girl Scouts, PTA and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an American Red Cross blood drive volunteer, as well as volunteering with other human service agencies.

She is survived by her children, Linda Oliver and her husband, John, of Chenango Bridge and Joseph L. Otello Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Franklin; two grandsons, J.J. Oliver of Boston, Mass., and Peter Oliver and his wife, Suzanne, of Boston, Mass.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers, Peg MacIntyre, Lillian MacGregor, Lee Decker, Donald Decker and Fred Decker.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at which time the family will be in attendance.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at St. Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta.

Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta Federated Garden Club for the enhancement of the gardens at Nader Towers, care of Elaine Nahman, treasurer, 144 Herrick Hill Road, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Frances Archibald

WALTON — Frances E. Archibald, 82, a former resident of Fancher Avenue, Walton, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at the Pleasant Valley Nursing Facility in Argyle.

She was born Nov. 23, 1922, in Delhi, a daughter of John and Mary Isabel Bundy Everett.

Frances graduated from Delaware Academy in Delhi and worked at Scintilla in Sidney during World War II.

On July 30, 1946, she married Lawrence Archibald in Delhi. He predeceased her in 1983.

Mrs. Archibald made her home in Walton from 1950 until 2002, when she moved to Pleasant Valley Adult Home in Argyle because of ill health.

Surviving are two daughters, Janice Pitkin and her husband, Peter, of Greenwich and Betty Kipp and her friend, Jack Gariepy, of Delhi; one sister, Mary Gray of Delhi; and two granddaughters, Jennifer O’Brien and her husband, Eric, of Schaghticoke and Theresa Pitkin of Greenwich. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Emily and Colin O’Brien; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, 102 Delaware St., Walton, with the Rev. Jay O’Connor officiating.

Interment will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral Friday.

The family suggests memorials in her name to the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, state Route 10, Delhi, NY 13753 or the Pleasant Valley Adult Home Gazebo Fund, 4573 State Route 40, Argyle, NY 12809.

Colleen L. Aufmuth

FLY CREEK — Mrs. Colleen Anne Lower Aufmuth, 40, of Fly Creek passed away Monday afternoon, Jan. 24, 2005, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Colleen was born Dec. 7, 1964, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta and was the daughter of Sherwood K. and Evelyn E. (Carr) Lower.

On Jan. 5, 1992, she married Nicholas S. Aufmuth Sr. in the Fly Creek United Methodist Church.

A 1982 graduate of Milford Central School, Colleen was an avid gardener who also had a great love for nature and animals. She was a well-known breeder of German shepherds.

She was a devoted mother who loved her children dearly.

Colleen is survived by her husband, Nick Aufmuth Sr. of Fly Creek; one daughter, Kara Aufmuth, and one son, Nick Aufmuth Jr., both of Fly Creek; her mother, Mrs. Evelyn Lower Ericson, and her husband, Phil Ericson, of Milford; one stepsister, Pamela Weir of Elverson, Pa.; and two stepbrothers, Tim Lower of Cooperstown and Karl Ericson of Orlando, Fla.

She was predeceased by her father, Sherwood K. Lower; her maternal grandparents, Theda and Norman Carr Sr.; her paternal grandparents, Ethel and Earle Lower; and an uncle, Norman Carr Jr.

A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date in Milford Center Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., when Colleen’s family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Clare W. Barry

MORRIS — Clare Woodard Barry, 104, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at her home in Morris.

She was born July 24, 1900, in the town of Pittsfield, the daughter of Schuyler Woodard and Minnie (Williams) Woodard.

She married Douglas Baxter Barry on July 21, 1924. He died Sept. 16, 1985.

She was a graduate of Morris Central School (class of 1918) and the Morris Training Class in 1919. She then taught school in the rural school in Maple Grove from 1919 to 1921. She then graduated from the Oneonta Normal school and taught in the Amsterdam school system from 1922 to 1924.

Clare was a longtime member of the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris.

She is survived by her great-nephew, Douglas Sloan, and wife Cynthia of Watertown; her great-niece, Mary Jane Sloan Dugan and husband Brian of Pine City; and her great-great-nieces and -nephews, Katherine, Molly, Meagan, Bryan, Jason and Mary Patricia.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Clare will be held at noon Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris with the Rev. Robert E. Witt Jr. officiating.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Zion Episcopal Church, PO Box 156, Morris, NY 13808 in Clare’s memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Karen E. Root

WEST EDMESTON — Karen E. Root, 60, of West Edmeston died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born Sept. 4, 1944, in Leonardsville, the daughter of Horace and Doris (Burch) Root.

Karen resided at her parents’ home in West Edmeston until recently. She truly loved her family and gave of herself in a unique way to each member. Her mother and father doted on her, providing her with a warm and safe harbor throughout her life. Karen was blessed to have her sister, Gail, and her family just around the corner from her home, where she could see them daily.

Karen is survived by her father, Horace; her sister and her husband, Gail and Tom VanBrink of West Edmeston; her niece, Brenda L. and Darren Belden; their children, Chris, Erica, Bradley and Amanda Belden; and Donald Snell and his daughter, Amber Snell.

Karen was predeceased by her mother, Doris, and niece, Connie Snell.

Funeral services for Karen will be held at the First Baptist Church, West Edmeston, at 2 p.m. Jan. 27, 2005, with Pastor Don Buck officiating. Calling hours for Karen will be from noon until 2 p.m. before the service time at the church.

Contributions in memory of Karen may be made to the Chase Memorial Nursing Home Patient Activity Fund.

Funeral arrangements by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Armand Malfetano

JEFFERSON — Armand E. Malfetano, 75, died suddenly at his residence Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005.

Armand was an area resident for 20 years, relocating from Paterson, N.J. He was a retired lithographer and owner of Romondo’s Restaurant in Jefferson from 1985 until his retirement in 1989.

He will be remembered by his daughters, Ann Verdina of Trenton, N.J., and Catherine Dixon and her husband, Benjamin, of Jefferson; and his son, Alfred Malfetano of Oneonta. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005.

Funeral services will be private.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Dora I. Maloof

ONEONTA — Dora I. Maloof, 85, of Oneonta died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

She was born July 11, 1919, in Oneonta, the daughter of William F. and Evangeline (Moses) Naatz.

She married Fred Maloof Sr. on Jan. 31, 1970. Mr. Maloof predeceased her March 22, 1998.

Dora graduated from Oneonta High School in 1938.

She was a civilian employee for the military in California where she assisted in the painting of military vehicles during World War II. Dora also worked at the Bendix plant in Sidney during the war. She worked at Sears and Bresee’s for a period of time as well. Dora also worked at SUNY Oneonta until her retirement.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in West Oneonta.

She is survived by her daughter, Michelle E. Green of Oneonta, as well as her son, William P. Naragon and his wife, Claudia, of Oneonta; a sister, Shirley J. Collis of Palmdale, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Audrey Naatz of Oneonta; her grandchildren, William G. Naragon and his wife, Stacy, of Norwich, Conn., and Renee M. Wong and her husband, John, of Easton, Pa.; her great-grandchildren, Isabella A. Naragon, Sophia R. Naragon and Ares Jordan Wong; an aunt, Ethel Naatz of Queensbury; several cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as a special friend, Marge Vaughan.

Dora was predeceased by her brother, William F. Naatz Jr.

Dora was a hard worker her entire life. She was a generous and loving woman who often gave money and items to charities for children, animals and families less fortunate than her own.

She loved gardening, the outdoors and took great pride in her home and family. After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed camping with a group of friends. She provided care for her mother until her own health began to fail.

Dora will be sorely missed by all that knew and loved her. Be At Peace.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William Lang, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date in St. Cecilia’s Cemetery, Warrensburg.

Convenience calling hours will be held Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home from 3 to 7 p.m.

Anyone who wishes may send contributions in Dora’s memory to the SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.
