George B. Elliott

CORTLAND — George B. Elliott, 82, died Jan. 24, 2005.

Mr. Elliott was born in Leeds, England, on March 21, 1922, to Lily (Barker) and Thomas Elliott. He moved to the United States at an early age and grew up in Fairport. He graduated from Fairport High School in 1940 and from Cornell University in 1947.

He enlisted in the United States Army on Oct. 20, 1942, and was separated from the service in July 1946. Mr. Elliott was a veteran of the China-Burma-India campaign. He remained in the Army Reserves as a captain for more than 10 years.

Mr. Elliott lived in Fairport, Honeoye Falls, Sherburne, Dryden, Stamford and Homer.

He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Hospital in Stamford and a trustee of the village of Stamford.

While living in Homer, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Cortland and the Literacy Volunteers of Cortland County. He was a volunteer for R.S.V.P. since 1985.

Mr. Elliott retired in 1982 after working for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for more than 40 years.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jayne Quinn Elliott, in 1994.

He is the father of four children, Linda Marie Hunt of Honeoye Falls, Craig T. Elliott of Superior, Colo., George W. Elliott of Cortland and James W. Elliott of Lynchburg, Va. He also has a foster daughter, Mildred Van Housen of Stamford.

Graveside services with military honors will be held in St. Malachy’s Cemetery, Sherburne, in the spring at a time and date to be announced.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School, Chamberlain, SD 57326.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.

Lillian Simons

COLUMBUS — Lillian Simons, 76, of county Route 25 passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at her home.

She was born in Utica on Feb. 28, 1928, a daughter of Donald and Lilly Mills Aiken, and received her education in Utica and Sherburne schools.

On Feb. 7, 1948, Lillian was united in marriage to Ralph B. Simons in Norwich. Mrs. Simons had worked for knitting mills in Utica, Champion Products in Norwich, the Sherburne-Earlville Central School and W.T. Grants Store in Norwich.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed sewing for her family. She was also a talented artist whose paintings were displayed in several local art shows.

Lillian was a member of the Smyrna United Methodist Church; a charter member of the Smyrna Fire Department Auxiliary; a 4-H leader and a member of the Home Bureau in Smyrna.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Ralph; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and John Coates of Mexico and Katherine and Jack Winton of Columbus; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Steven and Sherry Simons, Michael and Karen Simons and Jared Simons, all of Columbus, and Ralph Jr. and Jennifer Simons of South Edmeston; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Adela and Robert Long of Stittville, Evelyn and William Deering of Sidney and Barbara and Vern Van Winkler of Afton; two brothers, Frederick Aiken of Utica and Robert Aiken of Marcy; 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Helen Frank, and two brothers, Charles and Donald Aiken.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 South Main St., Sherburne.

Burial will be held in the spring in West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Barbara Kunsela

EDMONDS, Wash. — Barbara Mowitt Kunsela, 88, died Dec. 29, 2004, in Edmonds, Wash.

She is remembered by family and friends as a woman of strength, generosity and courage. Her gentle and quiet spirit was both adventuresome and full of humor.

She was devoted to her children, friends and her deceased husband, William R. Kunsela, former president of SUNY at Delhi and SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome.

Her daughters, Karen Lindberg of Edmonds, Wash., Lynn Abarno of Stamford and Barbara Titus of Toms River, N.J., describe their mother as the "ultimate" optimist, a believer in equality and a passionate practitioner of the philosophy "attitude is everything."

Barbara was born in Massena on Aug. 20, 1916. Most of her formative years were spent in Brooklyn. She graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1937 and taught high school English in Middleville until the outbreak of World War II. She was married Dec. 31, 1941.

Her passion for books and education eventually led her to pursue a master’s degree in library science from SUNY at Albany, and Barbara was employed as a librarian at Delaware Academy and Central School in Delhi for many years.

She and her husband retired to Palm Aire in Sarasota, Fla., in 1982. Barbara continued to pursue her interest in libraries by volunteering at the Palm Aire Community Library.

Her husband died in 1996, and in 2003, Barbara relocated to live near her oldest daughter in Edmonds, Wash. At Edmonds Landing, a retirement community, she continued to live by one of her favorite philosophies, "Bloom where you are planted," sharing her love and positive spirit with all of those whose paths she crossed.

She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, six grandchildren, Sean Foster, Eric Fernstrom, Jessica Foster, Nicole Abarno, Karl Fernstrom and Jeanine Abarno, and a great-granddaughter, Alexa Marie Abarno-Lazarus.

The internment services will take place at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, at 1 p.m. April 30, 2005.

Edward E. Chase

RICHMONDVILLE — Edward E. Chase, 64, of Richmondview Apartments died Monday at his residence.

Mr. Chase was born March 19, 1940, in Blenheim, the son of Millard and Alta (VanValkenburgh) Chase.

He was a lifelong area resident and had been employed at Bellevue Builders Supply Inc. in Rotterdam until taking leave because of a disability.

He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia VanValkenburgh; and three brothers, Raymond Chase, Albert Chase and Floyd Chase.

Survivors include a daughter, Connie Chambers of Pittsfield; three sons, Lester Chase of Pennsylvania, Barry Chase of Worcester and Edward C. Chase of Mount Upton; a sister, Judy Rivenburg of East Cobleskill; a brother, Homer Chase of Summit; nine children; and eight great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.

Spring interment will be in Breakabeen Cemetery.

Donald C. Doig

BOVINA CENTER — Donald Clifford Doig, 59, of Pink Street, Bovina Center, died suddenly Thursday morning, Jan. 27, 2005, at O’Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born Sept. 21, 1945, in Delhi, the son of Edwin and Helen Gladys (Biggar) Doig.

He graduated from South Kortright Central School, class of 1964, and later from SUNY Cobleskill, class of 1966.

Donald was first married to Mary Jo Biittner on June 23, 1972. They later divorced. On May 24, 2003, he married Patricia Schneider in the Bovina United Presbyterian Church, Bovina Center.

Donald was a member and Elder of the Bovina United Presbyterian Church. He had recently accepted the call to serve his Lord on the Susquehanna Valley Presbytery level. He was a steward of the land and a dairy farmer. Most recently, he was a driver for Delaware Opportunities, Delhi.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Bovina Center; a son, Clifford "Chip" Doig of Greenville, Va.; two daughters, Polly Doig of Rochester and Sue Doig of Gainesville, Fla.; a brother, Raymond and Katherine Doig of New Sweden, Maine; and a sister, Marilyn and John Morse of Golden, Colo.

Funeral services will take place at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at the Bovina United Presbyterian Church, Bovina Center, with the Rev. Scott Conrad officiating.

Friends are invited to greet the family from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005.

Burial will take place in the spring at the Bovina Cemetery, Bovina Center.

Contributions are asked to be made to the Bovina Emergency Squad or the Bovina United Presbyterian Church in loving memory of Donald C. Doig.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Marion Ruparshek

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Marion Ruparshek, 90, of Christian Hill died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 26, 2005, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. She was pleased to have reached her 90 birthday, and, as she once said, was looking forward to living "to be the great age of 100."

She was born Jan. 4, 1915, at home in Cooperstown, a daughter of James and Marcia (Noyes) Winnie.

She was first married to Melvin Lambert, who died in 1962. She then married William Edward Ruparshek on April 24, 1970, in St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Mr. Ruparshek died Feb. 18, 2004.

Raised in Cooperstown, Marion was a 1933 graduate of Cooperstown High School.

For 30 years, she was employed by Beechnut in Canajoharie, where she operated a collator that wrapped gum and printed labels. She was also a technician in their lab.

One of her hobbies was making homemade pies, apple pie being one of her favorites. She also enjoyed needlepoint, having created several displays of her creations throughout her home.

A member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, she truly enjoyed her family and friends and will be remembered for her big smile, laughter, and positive energy.

Marion is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Wanda C. Ruiz of Christian Hill; six grandchildren, Patrick Lambert and his wife, Karen, and Michael Lambert and his wife, Brenda, all of Saugerties, Tymera McDonald of Palmer, Mass., Wendy Figueroa of Springfield, Mass., Brenda Sierra and her husband, Robert, of Christian Hill and Steven Ruiz of Milford; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, James R. Winnie and his wife, Irene, of Ney, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by one son, Wayne Lambert, who died in 1999; one granddaughter, Suzanne Lambert; and three sisters, Laura Eldredge, Helen Petrisak and Sara Jane O’Brien.

A funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Burial will take place at a later date in the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday afternoon, from 2 to 4 p.m. when Marion’s family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Edward E. Chase

RICHMONDVILLE — Edward E. Chase, 64, of Richmondview Apartments died Monday at his residence.

Carmella Ponzio

OCALA, Fla. — Carmella Ponzio, 59, formerly of Bainbridge, passed away Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at her home in Ocala, Fla.

She was born Dec. 2, 1945, daughter of Joseph and Antoinette (Iannone) Militano in Brooklyn.

Carmella attended St. John’s Catholic Church in Bainbridge until June 2002 when she moved to Florida.

She is predeceased by her parents and her husband, William Ponzio.

Carmella is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Kris Chanitz of Ocala, Fla.; her son, Dominick Ponzio of Ocala, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Benedict Esposito of Brooklyn; a niece and several nephews.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, at C. H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Bainbridge with the Rev. Fr. Robert Dwyer, pastor, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc., One Hanover Park, 16633 North Dallas Parkway, Suite 600, Addison, TX 75001.

Arrangements are under the direction of C. H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Frederick Hurlbutt

NEW BERLIN — Frederick F. Hurlbutt, 86, of New Berlin went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, Jan. 28, 2005. He was a resident of Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.

Born April 1, 1918, in Pittsfield, Frederick was the son of Charles and Florence (Huntley) Hurlbutt. He attended Morris Central School.

He married Mary "Madeline" Burch on Dec. 20, 1941.

Frederick was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving in W.W.II from 1942 to 1946. For many years he was employed by Kraft Food Company and as postmaster in South Edmeston.

He was a member of the South Edmeston Community Church where he served as a deacon and as a Sunday school teacher for many years.

In addition to Mary Hurlbutt, his loving wife of 63 years, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy and Joseph Gennosa of Elmira; three sons, Rodney Hurlbutt of New Berlin, Gregory and Blanche Hurlbutt of Edmeston and William and Stacey Hurlbutt of Lawrence, Kan.; grandchildren, Elizabeth Gennosa and Rich Terwilliger, Christine and Patrick Klee and Allison, Amy Gennosa, Anita Gennosa, Josh Hurlbutt and Sarah Suver and Logan, Brian and Jennifer Hurlbutt and Brynne and Regan.

He was predeceased by one grandson, Richard Dean, one sister, Lenore Moziak, and two brothers, Leo and Roland Hurlbutt.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at the South Edmeston Community Church, South Edmeston, with the Rev. Brian Hurlbutt and the Rev. Jeff McLallan officiating.

Friends may call Tuesday, Feb. 1, from noon until 2 p.m. preceding the funeral service at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to the South Edmeston community Church, South Edmeston, or to Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Barbara Smith

NORWICH — Barbara Smith of Norwich died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford after a lengthy illness.

She was born Barbara Duane Eddy in Oneonta in 1920. She and her brother were raised by their grandparents in Sidney.

She married Francis Smith in 1939. They moved to Sidney Center in 1951. Francis died in 1973.

Barbara was a member of the Norwich Monday Evening Music Club, the Sidney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Methodist Women, United Methodist Church of Sidney and the Chenango Voices.

Barbara is survived by five children, Emily Smith Droddy of Magnolia, Texas, Ron Smith of Norwich, Dorothy Smith Radomski of Trenton, N.J., Ken Smith of Madeira, Calif., and Don Smith of Bainbridge; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Her brother, Horace Eddy of Oneonta, died in 1987.

Friends may call from noon until 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at the United Methodist Church of Sidney on Liberty Street.

Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David Masland, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Sidney Music Department.

Arrangements are being handled by C. H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.
