Stanley Melnick

SCHENEVUS — Stanley Melnick, 83, of Schenevus died of a stroke Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, surrounded by the love of his children, Robert, Maria and Carol, his in-law, Charles Sohlgren, his sister, Ann Tinkler, and the Derech family of Connecticut.

He was predeceased by his wife, Sophie, a sister, Nell, and her husband, Mike.

Thanks are extended to the neighbors and well-wishers of Schenevus. Stanley was eased in his passage by the comforting care of Dr. Cammilleri and the nursing staff at Fox Hospital.

Donations are urgently needed, in memory of Stanley or your loved one, to the A. O. Fox Hospital Foundation to support nursing scholarships, the FoxCare Center, Oneonta, NY 13820, or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Hwy. 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

In the spring, when the flowers bloom and life renews itself, a memorial service and burial will be held.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

John David Schrull

MILFORD — John David Schrull of Milford died peacefully at home with his family Friday, Jan. 28, 2005.

He was born Oct. 23, 1916, the son of John O. Schrull and Rose Tyre in Brooklyn, one of nine children.

He graduated from Morris High School, where he played all sports, baseball being his favorite.

The family had a dairy farm between Walton and Franklin. While there, John worked for the Breakstone Creamery in Walton.

He married Dorothy Richardson in March 1942, and in July began three years of United States Army duty, serving in the campaigns of North Africa and Europe under Generals Patch and Patton until September 1945. He attained the rank of master sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star. Later, as a member of the Reserves, he served with the 978th Ordinance Company in Korea.

After returning home, he was employed as a shop carpenter for Bresee’s Department Store and later by Neil Nielsen, contractor. He was a union carpenter for many years and later held office as business agent for Local 1656 of the Hudson Valley District Council Carpenters Union. He was also a member of the American Legion and Oneonta Elks Club.

John is survived by a daughter, Rachel Stillman, Oneonta; two sons, Michael of Colliersville and Frederic of Milford; five grandchildren, Calla Schrull of New York City, twins, Lucas Schrull, USMP in Iraq, and Lindsay Schrull, USCG in Michigan, Jesse Schrull, USCG in California, and Nicholas Stillman of Oneonta; a brother, Robert Schrull of Alabama; and sisters Elsie Schrull of California and Florence Smith of Virginia; nieces Lori Foote of Sidney, Barbara McNaught of Walton, Betty Barber of California, Diane Sepler of Florida and Gloria Machne Packard of Texas; and several grandnieces and nephews. The family would particularly like to thank Lisa Langelotti, John’s daughter-in-law and loving caregiver.

He was predeceased by brothers Otto and Rudy, sisters Olga, Lillian and Rose, and niece Alice Machne, twin sister of Gloria.

Throughout his life, John took special pleasure in his home and family, working and playing outdoors, particularly gardening and hunting.

His grandchildren, who all called him Poppy, were the greatest joy of his retirement years, and he had many large family get-togethers where a good time was had by all. He was dearly loved for his sense of humor and generous nature and will be terribly missed.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with a brief memorial service to follow at 6 p.m.

Burial and a private service at the West Oneonta Cemetery will take place in the spring.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Helen G. Chace

WALTON — Helen G. Chace, 84, of Walton died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at the Penn Hall Nursing Center, Chambersburg, Pa.

She was born Aug. 25, 1920, in Walton, the daughter of Logan J. and Minnie May (Beecher) Gould. She graduated from Walton Central School and also Delhi Tech.

On Sept. 19, 1942, Helen married Ronald Chace in Walton. Mr. Chace predeceased her in 1990.

Helen was secretary to the president at Delhi Tech for many years until her retirement.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed music, working outdoors in her garden and with her flowers.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Walton, being active as a Sunday school teacher and as a Youth Fellowship leader. For many years, Helen was a Cub Scout den mother.

Helen is survived by two sons, Joel Chace of Mercersburg, Pa., and Mark Chace of Beacon; daughter-in-law, Candace Chace of Mercersburg, Pa.; four grandchildren, Larissa Chace of Austin, Texas, Logan Chace of Oneonta, Brechyn Chace, Austin, Texas, and Tristan Chace, Mercersburg, Pa.; and two nephews, Barry and David Gould.

She was predeceased by one brother, Lawrence Gould.

Funeral and committal services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, in the Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, 102 Delaware St., Walton, with the Rev. James Martin, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, Walton, officiating.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, PO Box 4261, Pittsfield MA 01202 or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 in loving memory of Helen G. Chace.

Helmut J. Klee

ONEONTA — Helmut Johann Klee, 88, of Oneonta and formerly of Cooperstown died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Helmut was born in Bremen, Germany, and immigrated to New York as a young boy.

Helmut was a veteran of the Army Air Force and while on detached service to the RAF, served in England, Belgium and Germany from 1943-1945.

Helmut married Minnie Mae (Tina) Sipe on Sept. 26, 1945, in York, Pa.

Helmut was self-employed as a successful ecclesiastical designer and fabricator at his studio, Guild Hall. He was well-known in his field and worked with many internationally renowned artists. Some examples of his most widely seen work were found at the Vatican Pavilion at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York as well as at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.

Helmut’s life was devoted to the arts. Beyond his profession, this love of the arts drew him to study painting at New York University and grew into a passionate pursuit of painting in his personal life. His talented work was exhibited at various art shows in the Cooperstown area, and is cherished by his family.

His love of the arts is further evidenced by his extensive literary and music library.

Helmut is survived by his loving wife, Minnie Mae (Tina) Klee; their three children, Pamela Fairlamb and her husband, Rick Fairlamb, of Montclair, N.J., Kathy McGinnis and her husband, Leo McGinnis, of Boulder, Colo., and Charles Klee of Oneonta; and seven grandchildren, Joseph John Zaky III, Alexander Zaky, Nicholas Zaky, Amanda Zaky, John Meyer II and his wife, Kaaren Meyer, Alicia Kingsbury and her husband, Andy Kingsbury, and Jesse Klee; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial will be planned at a later date.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Services, Cooperstown and Milford.

Arlene M. Utter

HAMDEN — Arlene M. Utter, 79, a lifelong resident of Hamden town, passed away at her home unexpectedly Friday night, Jan. 28, 2005.

The daughter of Theodore and Elizabeth (Gray) Eckert, she was born May 9, 1925, in DeLancey, was a graduate of Downsville Central School, and married Richard J. Utter, Dec. 21, 1945. He died in 1985.

Arlene was employed as a ward clerk at Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton, where she was very active for 35 years, retiring in 2002.

She was a life member of the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church and had been active in the Terry Clove Home Bureau. She also enjoyed traveling, having visited numerous countries throughout the world.

Surviving are a son, Wade R. Utter of Afton; a son-in-law, Thomas J.C. Davis of Hamden; six grandsons, Brian, Todd, Chad and Derek Utter, Shannon and Sean Davis; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sandra Johnson of Delhi; a brother, Lawrence Eckert of Oneonta; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Karen Davis; a grandson, Alan Utter; a brother, Leonard Eckert; and two sisters, Thelma Hammond and Jane Utter.

The Rev. Bert More will officiate graveside services, with burial in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton, (the date to be announced), later next spring.

Memorial contributions to Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton, NY 13856, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Frederick Coager

BLOOMVILLE — Frederick H. (June) Coager, 92, of Bloomville passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at home with his family.

He was born in Prattsville, one of 12 children to Frederick and Nellie (Chase) Coager.

He married Catherine Scutt on Dec. 24, 1941, in Grand Gorge.

Self-employed in cattle trucking, he also worked for 20 years and retrieved 20,000 golf balls as groundskeeper at Stamford Golf Club, Stamford.

He was the oldest man in New York state to collect unemployment insurance.

June was an honorary member of the Bloomville Fire Department. He had been a frequent patron at the Bloomville Diner.

In the past, he was often seen riding his motorcycle and more recently in his truck, slowly taking in the scenery along the way, but he especially enjoyed the riding lawn mower.

He is survived by his wife at home, Catherine; three sons, Richard (Nancy), Saugerties, Donald (Debbie), South Kortright, and Robert (Margaret), Bloomville; four grandchildren, Michael, Brooke Anne, Lindsay and Kyle; a brother, Herbert; and a sister, Nellie Ferris Thorington; and several nieces and nephews.

A son, Thomas Jon, predeceased him, as did nine of his brothers and sisters, Jake Coager, DeWitt Coager, Lewis Coager, David Coager, Mattie Truesdell, Hazel Finn, William (Pete) Coager, Harry Coager and Harold Coager.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, in the Bloomville United Methodist Church, Bloomville, with the Rev. Richard Lenz officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place in the spring in Fairlawn Cemetery, Grand Gorge.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Virginia V. Cortese

ONEONTA — Virginia V. "Ginny" Cortese, 83, of Oneonta passed away Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born in Worcester, May 18, 1921, the daughter of Dominic and Philomena (Santoli) Sandoli.

She married David M. Cortese on Nov. 24, 1946, in Worcester, and he predeceased her Jan. 31, 1981.

A homemaker, Virginia was a member of St. Mary’s Church and a former member of its Rosary Society. She was an avid bingo player.

She took great pride in her family and cherished all the special times spent with them.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Kolboszewski and her husband, Michael, of Oneonta, Donna Cole and her husband, John, of Oneonta, and Linda Cornell of Fern Park, Fla.; her grandchildren, Donald and Sharon Halstead, Daniel and Michelle Halstead, Christopher Wiltsie, Michael Cole, Shawn Logan, Richard Snyder Jr.; and several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Tony Sandoli of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Josephine Guernsey of Albany; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and many loyal friends.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Kathy Snyder, and three brothers, Fred Sandoli, Tom Sandoli and Tore Sandoli.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, in St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Michael Cournoyer, officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.

Natalie Mihalko

COOPERSTOWN — Natalie ("Tillie") Bachanas Mihalko, 95, of Cooperstown died Sunday morning, Jan. 30, 2005, at Otsego Manor.

Tillie was born Oct. 23, 1909, in Oaksville, a daughter of Joseph and Ursula (Rudvella) Bachanas. In her youth, she attended a one-room schoolhouse in Oaksville and later attended a Catholic high school in Utica.

From 1962 until 1973, she owned and operated The Donnybrook, a roadhouse located just north of Oaksville on state Highway 28.

A communicant of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, she enjoyed tatting, crocheting, and refinishing furniture.

Tillie is survived by one daughter, Joyce Mihalko; and her son, David Mihalko; one brother, Leonard Bachanas; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Carole L. Mihalko, who died July 5, 2004; two brothers, Edmund and Raymond Bachanas; and four sisters, Mary Gouse, Anna Krukonis, Victoria Belden and Elaine Victoria Bachanas.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding.

The Service of Committal and burial will take place at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Richfield Springs.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Activities Fund at Otsego Manor, 128 Phoenix Mills Cross Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 1 Birchwood Drive, Dept. FH, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
