Michael Iannelli

WEST ONEONTA — Michael Iannelli, 53, of West Oneonta passed away Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York City.

He was born Aug. 24, 1951, in SanAngelo, DiLombardi, Italy, the son of Bernardino and Filomena (Castellano) Iannelli.

He married Anna Mascia on Aug. 21, 1971, in Brooklyn. For the past 12 years, Mike and his wife, Anna, have owned and operated Iannelli’s Ristorante in Oneonta. Before that, they owned restaurants in Cobleskill, Babylon and Mattituck.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and also served on the town of Oneonta Planning Board. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and raising German Shorthair Pointers. Mike had a love for soccer, which he played and coached. He was active in the development of soccer all of his life in this area and Long Island, and contributed his time to the development of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. As he grew older, Mike took interest in the wine industry and was noted locally as a connoisseur of fine wines.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Iannelli of West Oneonta; his children, Mena Mazerole of West Oneonta, Michelle Iannelli of Hoboken, N.J., and Michael (Debbie) Iannelli of Oneonta; two grandchildren, Mikela and Jack Mazerole of West Oneonta, as well as another grandchild soon to be born; and his parents, Bernardino and Filomena Iannelli of Brooklyn. He is also survived by two brothers, Vincent Iannelli of New Jersey and Paul Iannelli of Pennsylvania, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor, officiating.

Friends are invited to call after 2 p.m. Monday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta. The family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Cancer Association, 1234 Sherman Ave., Suite 203, Evanston, IL 60202.

Nancy L. Bruno

DOWNSVILLE — Nancy L. Bruno, 68, of Downsville passed away Thursday afternoon, Feb. 3, 2004, in the Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton, after a long illness.

Nancy was born in Hackensack, N.J., on July 4, 1936. She was a graduate of Bucknell University with a master’s degree in education. She was employed as an instructor and later as an administrator with Middlesex Community College, Edison, N.J. Nancy was a staunch Democrat and was a member of the Democratic Society of Downsville.

Nancy is survived by her daughter, Kim E. Cobb of Walton; a granddaughter, Natali Cobb of Walton; a brother, Arthur Jacobs of Newburgh; a sister-in-law, Lois Jacobs of Cranbury, N.J; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Edward Jacobs.

It was Nancy’s wish that there be no services or calling hours. Memorial contributions in Nancy’s memory may be made to Enhanced DVH, 1 Titus Place, Walton. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available by contacting the funeral home.

Grace E. Herr

DELANCEY — Grace E. Herr, 76, of DeLancey passed away early Thursday morning, Feb. 3, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a long illness.

Grace was born in the town of Bovina on March 25, 1928, the daughter of the late Walter T. and Ina Lamb Robson.

She was a graduate of Andes Central School, class of 1946.

Grace married Francis Herr at Lake Delaware Episcopal Church on April 17, 1955. She assisted her husband, Fran, in the operation of their farm.

She is survived by her loving husband, Fran. She was predeceased by three brothers, John, Norris and George Robson, and a sister, Marge Campbell.

A graveside service will be held in Andes Cemetery in the spring.

Arrangements are entrusted to Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.

Hazel B. Furgerson

DELHI — Hazel B. Furgerson, 84, of Meredith Road, a longtime Delhi resident, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness Thursday evening, Feb. 3, 2005, at the South Kortright Rest home, where she had been residing since May 2001.

The daughter of James S. and Blanche M. (Slater) Yearry, she was born April 6, 1920, in Hobart and married Reford J. Furgerson in 1940 at Union Grove. He died Nov. 16, 1991.

A lifelong Delaware County resident, Hazel and Reford moved to Delhi in 1952, where she was employed in housekeeping for a number of years at the former Delaware County Infirmary (now Countryside Care Center).

Hazel’s interests revolved around her home, finding enjoyment in cooking for her family and maintaining her collection of various knickknacks. She was a lover of nature and the outdoors, especially flowers and birds.

Surviving are a son, Arthur J. Furgerson of Walton; four grandsons, David, Duane, Donald and Tracy (Michelle) Furgerson; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Kaitlynn; a brother, James Yeary of Delhi; two sisters, Margaret (Richard) Dougherty of Meridale and Lillian Coss of Walton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Robert J. Furgerson; two brothers, William and Leslie Yearry; and a sister, Jennie Newell.

Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the Rev. Bert More will conduct funeral services at 4 p.m.

Burial will be later in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Memorial contributions to the South Kortright Rest Home "Activity Fund" will be appreciated.

Harold W. ’Mac’ McAllister

SCOTIA — Harold W. "Mac" McAllister, 69, of Scotia died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, after a brief illness.

He was born April 8, 1935, in Schenectady, a son of the late Harold B. and Edith (Webster) McAllister. He was a member of the class of 1953 of Mt. Pleasant High School.

He married Patricia A. Kovatchitch on Oct. 10, 1958, in Milford.

A United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict era, Mac was employed by General Electric as a layout man for the large steam turbine division in Schenectady, retiring in 1994 after 28 years of service.

He was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club, the First Baptist Church of Scotia and Guan-Ho-Ha Fish & Game Club of Scotia.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia McAllister; son, Bruce P. McAllister of Scotia; daughter, Sheila A. Sweeney of Dorloo; mother, Edith McAllister of Glenville; brother, Paul McAllister of Glenville; grandchildren, Benjamin A. Sweeney of Dorloo and Daniel A. Sweeney of Dorloo; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bekkering-Ellis Funeral Home, 1 Mohawk Ave., Scotia.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

Cora Wheat Hyatt

SIDNEY — Cora Wheat Hyatt, 91, of Sidney passed away Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.

She was born Aug. 27, 1913, daughter of the late Thomas B. and Helen Nellie (Root) North, in Seattle, Washington.

Cora married Oscar Wheat. He predeceased her. She later married Carmen Eldred. He predeceased her and she married Edgar J. Hyatt on May 23, 1979, in Hamilton. He predeceased her on May 25, 2000.

Cora was a surgical technician at The Hospital in Sidney when she retired in 1975. She was a member of the East Guilford Presbyterian Church and volunteered for Project Share, the Red Cross and for New York State Electric and Gas.

She is survived by her children, Oscar B. Wheat of Phoenix, Ariz., Mary J. Sparks, Phoenix, Ariz., Lorraine N. Blaise of Las Vegas, Nev., Barbara P. Morcomb of Sidney, Jack Wheat of Phoenix, Ariz.; her sister, Brenda M. Baldwin of Franklin; sister-in-law, Nathilia Raymond of Unadilla; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five stepchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The Rev. Allen Presby will officiate.

Burial will be in San Jacinto, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel Sidney.

Thelma R. Vroman

ONEONTA — Thelma "Tommie" Vroman passed away Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at the Otsego Manor in Cooperstown.

She was born March 29, 1926, in Esperance, the daughter of Roy and Henrietta (Manchester) Foland.

Tommie was raised in Cobleskill, and after her marriage to Stewart J. Vroman they moved to Oneonta. Tommie worked for Hartwick College in the admissions office for several years. She then was employed at the State University College at Oneonta in the registrar’s office as the senior clerk for more than 25 years, retiring on her birthday, March 29, 1991.

Tommie was a member of the Oneonta Business Women’s Club, the Oneonta Elks Club and the SUCO Golden Alumni, which for many years she was the Sunshine Committee. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta, where she was active until her illness.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband and later with her daughter on the Wilber Bank Gold Club trips. She was particularly fond of Alaska and Ireland. Her hobbies included walking, reading, listening to music, attending local concerts and caring for her many varieties of house plants.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Vroman of Oneonta; three grandchildren, David, Kerri and Douglas; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Michael and Harriet Cimko and Jim and Anita Vroman; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stewart, on May 14, 1986; her son, David Vroman; and her brother, Roy Foland.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Muriel S. Noonan

ROXBURY — Muriel Sullivan Noonan, 86, formally of Hamburg and Kirkside, Roxbury, died peacefully Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

She was born Jan. 8, 1919, in Buffalo, to Frederick Fleming and Muriel Reidpath Sullivan, the only daughter and eldest of five. She attended Buffalo State Teachers College, majoring in home economics education, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1940. She taught home economics in Cuba.

She married Donald J. Noonan on April 4, 1942, in Buffalo. They settled on South Lake Street in Hamburg and raised four daughters and seven foster children. She was active in Camp Fire Girls for many years as her daughters grew up. She was a member of the Hamburg Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school. She enjoyed cooking, baking, traveling, reading, sewing, knitting, swimming, camping, bridge and other card games. She and Don played bridge with a special group of friends for more than 50 years. Muriel loved her family and enjoyed her nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Donald J. Noonan of Stamford; her daughters, Judith (Richard) Was of Colden, Patricia (Ronald) Cumming of Roxbury, Barbara (Terry) Riley of Albuquerque, N.M., Donna (Robert) Allen of Brookhaven, Pa., and foster son Hiram Peter (Lisa) Marin of Texas; her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Aimee Vroman and children Joseph and Nicole, Rachel (Robert) Oesch and Reilly, Toni (Bryan) Ludwig and children Kaitlyn and Kelly, Stacy (Byrne) Remphrey, Jess and Benjamin Popp, Abby Shubert, Christopher Allen and Timothy Riley; two brothers, Theodore and Richard Sullivan, both of Buffalo; a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Ruth Noonan of Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Sullivan of Florida and Jean Sullivan of Buffalo; many nieces and nephews; and her best friend of 69 years, Edith Beatty of Hamburg.

She was predeceased by brothers Frederick and John.

A memorial service will be held at Robinson Terrace, 28652 Harper St., Stamford, at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8. A memorial service in Hamburg will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Hamburg Presbyterian Church.

William H. Haney
FRANKLIN — William Howard Haney Sr., passed away Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi.He was born July 17, 1914, in Obar, N.M., the son of Herbert and Emma (Cronk) Haney, who were homesteading in the New Mexico wilderness at the turn of the century.In 1928, the family moved back east, settling on a dairy farm in Franklin.Bill was the youngest of a family of nine children, including four sisters, (Ruth, Viola, Edith and Helen), and four brothers, (Ben, Stroud, Bruce and Calvin), all of whom have since passed away.Bill attended Franklin High School, where he excelled in football, basketball and track. He was exceptional at track, once running the 100-yard dash in less than 10 seconds.Bill graduated from Franklin High School, where he met and then wed Elsa Shubert. The wedding was held July 4, 1936, in Franklin.After a short period of living and working in Binghamton, Bill and Elsa moved back to Franklin and started a successful career in farming until their retirement in 1973. After retiring from farming, they built a house in Otego.Not one for sitting around, Bill went to work for Lobdell’s and then Webster’s Paving in Oneonta. He would work summers there and then Bill and Elsa would spend winters in Florida. Eventually, they decided to sell the Otego house and build a house in Florida. Health issues finally convinced them to move back to Franklin to be near family.Bill is survived by his wife, Elsa, who is now living at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi; and their four children; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. They are, Ethel Hillis and her husband, Frank, of Franklin and their children, Jim, Jennifer, and Judy; Jeanette Rutherford and her husband, Clyde, of Otego and their children, Diane and Nancy; Betty Glazier and her husband, Alan, of Grants Pass, Ore., and their daughter, Catherine; and Bill Haney Jr. and his wife, Dorothy, of Sidney and their children Bill, Amanda and Tom.There will be no calling hoursA private funeral service will be held at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Harold Waterman
BURLINGTON — Harold Waterman, 79, of 158 Pratt Road, Hartwick, died suddenly Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.Harold was born Aug. 4, 1925, and raised in Verona, N.J., the son of Herman and Erma Waterman. After his 18th birthday in 1943, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific. As an automatic rifleman, he saw action on Guam, the Marianas Islands, Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands. He was wounded in action on May 10, 1945, and was awarded the Purple Heart.Harold married Betty (Biel) on May 28, 1950, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Hoboken, N.J.After the war, Harold quickly developed a reputation as a skilled and capable contractor and carpenter. As a self-employed contractor, he built many homes and other structures "from the ground up." Indeed, on the very day of his death he had just completed building a new home on Pratt Road for Betty and himself.Never one to sit still, he was, for nearly 20 years, a member of the Verona, N.J., Volunteer Fire Department and served as its chief from 1977 to 1978. He was also an active member of the Verona Volunteer Rescue Squad.Harold and Betty moved to the Hartwick area in the early 1990s where Harold enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling and gardening.Harold quickly became an accomplished gardener (so much so that he built a small greenhouse so he could get a jump on the season), growing everything from vegetables to flowers. He particularly enjoyed canning the vegetables he grew. He also took great pleasure in growing even larger pumpkins each year for his grandchildren. Another of his favorite pastimes was entertaining his grandchildren for hours on end with his large collection of Lionel model trains.Harold is survived by Betty, his beloved wife of 54 years, and their five children, Eileen B. Campbell and her husband, John, of Hartwick, Donna L. Gauss and her husband, Doug, of Lake Hiawatha, N.J., Lenny Waterman and his wife, Debbie, of Verona, N.J., Cheryl Tomasch and her husband, Mike, of Wayne, N.J., and Sharon L. Waterman and her friend, Patrick Fagan, of Hudson Falls; as well as by nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild and seven nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his twin brother, Donald, of North Carolina.He was predeceased by his brother, Herman, and his two sisters, Gertrude and Marion.A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church, 10 Fairview Ave., in Verona, N.J.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who so desire make contributions in Harold’s memory to the Verona Volunteer Fire Department, 880 Bloomfield Ave., Verona, NJ 07044 or to the Verona Volunteer Rescue Squad, 19 Church St., Verona, NJ 07044.Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Anna B. Flummer
ONEONTA — Anna B. Flummer, 94, of Oneonta and most recently of Delhi died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at O’Connor Hospital, Delhi.She was born Nov. 30, 1910, in North Norwich, the daughter of Gordon M. and Mary C. (Coman) Ashton.She married George R. Flummer Sr. on June 27, 1932, in Norwich. Mr. Flummer died Feb. 29, 1984.Anna was an LPN for a period of time. She then went back to school to further her education and became a nursing home administrator.Anna lived in Florida from 1970 to 1986, at which time she worked as a nursing home administrator for several nursing home facilities, as well as Hospice, in the St. Petersburg and Tallahassee areas.She was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta for more than 60 years.Anna was a member of the New York State LPN Association. She enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball and football. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Anna also enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles.She is survived by her children, a son, Earl J. Flummer and his wife, Mary Anne, of Cape Coral, Fla., a son, George R. Flummer Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Aurora, Colo., her son, Gary E. Flummer and his wife, Mary, of Lake Placid, Fla., her daughters, Judith A. Terrell and her husband, John, of Oneonta, Mary J. Sanford and her husband, Robert, of Delhi and Barbara R. Allen of Tallahassee, Fla., and a son, Gordon N. Flummer of Tallahassee, Fla.; her sister, Helen Hunter of Greene; 15 grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.A grandson, Thomas M. Flummer, predeceased Anna in 1983.Funeral services for Anna B. Flummer will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Les Drake
OTEGO — Les Drake, 72, of Otego died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.He was born Feb. 25, 1932, in Granton, the son of Frank and Vera (Cathcart) Drake.He married Kaye Ross on Dec. 26, 1964, in Johnson City. She still survives him.A lifelong area resident, Les worked in sales for more than 20 years, most recently for Minuteman Optical Corp. in Oneonta. He was a member of the Wells Bridge Baptist Church.For many years, Les traveled around speaking to various schools and other organizations about Native American culture.His loving wife of more than 40 years, Kaye Drake, of Otego survives Les. He is also survived by his daughter, Rosemary Jackson and her companion, Lloyd Stannard, of Warnerville; his brother, Ivan Drake of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; as well as a sister, Mary Palmer of Norwich; his grandson, Evan Jackson of Warnerville; and his nephew, Niles Palmer.His sisters Rosie (Drake) Bennett, Ella (Drake) Darling, Dorothy (Drake) Kirk, and Florence (Drake) Robinson; and his brothers Edward Drake and Charles Drake predeceased him.A funeral service for Les Drake will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, in the Wells Bridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Mildred L. Zido
SHARON SPRINGS — Mildred L. Zido, 76, of Beechwood Road, Sharon Springs, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, after a long illness, with family members and very dear friend R.C. Aker at her side. Born in Lutheranville on Sept. 12, 1928, Mrs. Zido had been a resident of Sharon Springs for 23 years. She was a graduate of Richmondville High School and at 40 received an associate’s degree in nursing at Fulton Montgomery Community College.Mrs. Zido had been employed at Cobleskill Community Hospital for 23 years and retired in the early 1990s from SUNY Healthcare Center, Cobleskill.She had attended the Dorloo United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Rebekah’s and the Seward Grange.Mrs. Zido was married in 1945 at Media, Pa., to Lewis J. Zido. He died in 1986.Mrs. Zido is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William (Teresa) Lape, Marcy, and Mrs. Kenneth (Mary) King, Dorloo; two sons, Lewis (Lynn) Zido, Leesburg, Fla., and Robert Zido, Milford; a brother, Roger Cohn, Cobleskill; grandsons, James and Scott Zido; granddaughters, Michelle King Rohac, Stephanie King, Rebecca Lape, Tara Zido and Heidi Zido Anderson; great-grandsons, Brennon King, Augustus Henricks, Ian and Owen Rohac and Lewis Zido; a great-granddaughter, Sophia Anderson.A memorial service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at the Robert A. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.Interment in the spring in Sharon Springs Cemetery.Memorials in her name, to the Sharon Springs Rescue Squad, care of the Sharon Springs Fire Department, will be appreciated.Arrangements are by Robert A. Stephen Breakey

WALTON — Stephen R. Breakey, 49, died Feb. 2, 2005, at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson. He was hospitalized Jan. 24 with a diagnosis of an aggressive, fast-moving form of neuro-endocrine cancer.

Stephen was born April 6, 1955, in Walton, the son of Osborne and Jane (Lambrecht) Breakey.

He graduated from Walton Central School, the State University College of Technology at Delhi and Cornell University.

Steve loved the game of golf and made it his life’s work. He was the superintendent of the Rolling Oaks Golf Course in Rocky Point and previously had similar positions in Connecticut and on Sanibel Island in Florida. In addition to caring for the golf courses, Steve also loved observing the birds and wildlife that inhabited his world.

Steve’s greatest pleasure was coming home to spend time with his family and friends and to walk the family dogs along the banks of the West Branch of the Delaware River.

He was an avid Miami Dolphins and New York Yankees fan.

Steve is survived by his mother, Jane Breakey; his sister, Patricia Breakey; his brother and sister-in-law, Walter Breakey and Julie Stone; and five nephews, Ryan and Kyle Hughson and Stone, Lucas and Aidan Breakey.

He was predeceased by his father, Osborne Breakey.

There will be no calling hours.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be held in the spring at a time and date to be announced.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, State Route 10, Delhi, NY 13753.
