Jay M. Zeh

JEFFERSON — Jay M. Zeh, 88, formerly of Jefferson, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta after a brief illness.

Mr. Zeh was born in Jefferson on May 17, 1916, the son of Irven and Lena A. (Mansfield) Zeh.

He owned and operated Jay-Win Farm in Jefferson and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Jefferson, the Jefferson Grange and the New York State Maple Producers Association and served on the Jefferson Central School Board of Education.

He was predeceased by his wife, Winifred (Champlin) Zeh, who died Nov. 10, 1996, after 56 years of marriage.

Mr. Zeh is survived by two sons, Daniel I. (Anne) Zeh of Cobleskill and Robert J. (Dorothy) Zeh of Oneonta; one granddaughter, Kristin Zeh of Albany; three grandsons, Daniel J. (Karen) Zeh of Jefferson, David Zeh of Saratoga and Bradly (Amy) Zeh of Oneonta; and one great-granddaughter, Emily Zeh of Oneonta.

Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at the United Methodist Church, Jefferson. The Rev. Frank Adams will officiate.

A spring interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Jefferson, NY 12093.

Warren Weaver

HAMDEN — Warren Weaver Jr., 66, of Hamden went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at O’Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born Feb. 8, 1939, in Union Grove, the son of Warren and Virginia (DuMond) Weaver. He was a preemie, weighing only a few pounds.

He married Loretta Finch of Margaretville/Wawarsing on Aug. 23, 1959, in the Margaretville Methodist Church.

Warren started farming on Barkaboon Road, Andes, in the spring of 1959. Later that year he was married. The farm was sold in 1969 along with the cows. He and his family then moved to Beech Hill. It was at that time that he started work at Andes Central School as a bus driver and building and grounds caretaker. He eventually held the position of head custodian. He also enjoyed working in the bluestone quarries on nights and weekends when he was able.

Warren was an honorary member of the Andes Fire Department. He also was an honorary member of the Tremperskill Rod & Gun Club. He loved to hunt and fish, and played a great game of golf until his later years. He was an avid Yankees fan and named his first son after Mickey Mantle. He was a great organizer and for many years planned the annual Andes class reunions.

He was a founder and organizer of the Andes Open Golf Tournament held annually at the Delhi College Golf Course.

Warren cooked many thousands of chicken barbecues with his longtime friend, Dick Gabriel. Together they fed many crowds for fund-raisers and family gatherings.

He was also a member of the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church.

A devoted family man, Warren had a large loving family and many friends. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Loretta Weaver of Hamden; five children, Patty and Leam Cika, Pammy and Greg Collins, Mickey Weaver, Robbie Weaver and Rodney and Chris Weaver; 18 grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua, Justin, Jenna and Rebekka Weaver, Cherie, Carissa, Carriann, Trevor and Travis Fairbairn, all of Andes, Leah, Luke and Kayla Weaver of Delhi, Adam and Kelly Gladstone, and Hunter, Chelsea and Roman Cika of Delhi; sisters, Vera and William Bolde, and Evelyn and Gerald Norris; a brother, Alan and Karen Weaver; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Henry Weaver.

Friends are invited to greet the family from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

A luncheon will be held immediately following the church services at the Andes Fire Department, Andes. All are invited to attend.

Burial will take place in the spring at Andes Cemetery.

Contributions are asked to be made to the Hamden, Delhi or Andes Fire Departments in loving memory of Warren Weaver Jr.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Helene B. Peterson

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Helene Joan Banta Peterson died of lung cancer Feb. 8, 2005, in her home in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Helene was born April 23, 1928, in Garden City, Long Island, to George Downs Banta Jr. and Helene Jensen Banta. She was raised on the Rolling Hills farm in Unadilla along with her sister, Jane, and her three brothers, George, Rob and Dick.

In 1949, she received a B.S. degree in human ecology from Cornell University and then did graduate studies at Western Reserve University in Ohio. In 1951, she received a registered dietitians’ certificate from University Hospitals of Cleveland where she worked for seven years.

In 1956, she married Richard Erling (Pete) Peterson, who remained her loving and faithful husband until his death in 1992.

Helene and Pete were the parents of six wonderful children, Susan Joan, Karen Lynn, Richard Erling (II), Jon Nels, Judith Helene and James Lars.

In 1970, Helene, Pete and their children moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, which remained her home until her death. In Salt Lake City, Helene worked for 25 years as a registered dietitian at LDS Hospital where she was instrumental in establishing the nutrition support group for patients receiving enteral nutrition.

She was an active member of the St. Ambrose Parish of the Roman Catholic Church and she served as a Eucharistic minister and RCIA sponsor for many years. She loved to read and passed that love on to all her children. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, and quilting and was active in the Utah Quilt Guild after her retirement.

Helene was a lover of nature and a member of Great Old Broads for Wilderness. Until her final illness, she could be frequently found hiking and camping in the mountains and deserts of the region.

Her family would like to thank IHC Hospice along with many friends and neighbors for their aid, comfort and support in her final days. Her children give special thanks to their sister, Susan, who cared for her during her illness.

Helene is survived by 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; her sister; three brothers; and her six children and their spouses, Susan Coulter, Karen and David Shapiro, Richard and Bonnie Tyler Peterson, Jon and Bonnie Peterson, Judy and David Cope, and James and Jean Harrison Peterson.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at St. Ambrose Church in Salt Lake City (1975 S. 2300 E.)

A Vigil Service will be held 7 p.m. Friday at the Neil O’Donnell and Sons Mortuary, 372 East 100 South Salt Lake City, where friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to IHC Hospice, 2250 S 1300 W. Salt Lake City, UT 84119.

Jacquelynn M. (Stanley) Rivera

ORLANDO, Fla. — Jacquelynn M. (Stanley) Rivera, 33, formerly of Oneonta and most recently of Orlando, Fla., passed away unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at her residence.

She was born in Albany on April 23, 1971, the daughter of Jack and Joan (Vergari) Stanley.

Jackie graduated from Oneonta High School in 1990. Following her graduation, she received her license as a nail technician and worked at Tina Marie’s salon in Oneonta. For the past eight years, she has lived in the Daytona/Orlando area, where she worked as an assistant business manager for Orlando Slingshot Inc.

Jackie was very much into athletics, and took great pride in being physically fit, as well as being a thrill seeker.

She is survived by her parents, Jack and Joan Stanley of Jamestown, R.I.; her brothers, Joel (Stacy) Stanley of Laurens, Justin Stanley and his fiancee, Jessica Olive, of Mount Vision, and Jeffrey Stanley of Washington, D.C.; her paternal grandparents, Bill and Ruth Stanley of Oneonta, and Janet and James Raymond of Otego; her maternal grandparents, Siro and Joan Vergari of Oneonta; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her two dogs, Rufus and Roscoe, the loves of her life.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, in St. Mary’s Church, Walnut Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA, 4845 Route 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Wayne A. Alcott

DAVENPORT — Wayne A. Alcott, 69, of Davenport passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at his home with his family by his side.

He was born Nov. 27, 1935, in Schenevus, the son of Carlton and Rose (Greengrow) Alcott. Wayne was predeceased by his parents, his two brothers, Carlton and Arthur Alcott.

On April 12, 1975, he married Diane Finch in Davenport Center.

He served in the United States Air Force for nine years beginning in 1953, and served at the end of the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1962.

Wayne was an independent truck driver for Clune Lumber Company and Husky Industries. He also drove for Riddell’s.

Wayne was known as the Bar-Keep for the Country Tavern, where he worked for seven years for the Fisher Brothers Band.

He enjoyed hunting, working in his garage and mechanicing. Wayne loved to drive his tractor-trailer, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Diane Alcott of Davenport; his daughter, Rose Mary (Alcott) Chase and her fiance, Alan Clark, of Davenport Center; his stepchildren, Kirk and Dawn Finch of Davenport Center, Kim Aldrich and her fiance, Paul Closs, of Walton, Gordon (Butch) Aldrich Jr. of Davenport, Rodney Harris and his fiancee, Arta Beebe, of Davenport Center and Roger Harris of Delhi; his grandchildren, Brendan and Brittany Chase of Davenport Center, Javin and Jessica Guile, U.S. Air Force, stationed in South Korea, Jamey Eggler of Walton, Melissa Aldrich of Davenport, Larry VanKeuren of Oneonta, Gordon Aldrich III of Davenport, Tyler Harris of Delhi, Matthew Harris of Davenport Center, Kiara Lynn Carson Harris of Davenport Center, Frank, Betty Lou, Maxwell and Jasmine Clark of Davenport Center; his brothers and their spouses, Russell "Rusty" and Lois Alcott of Huntsville, Ala., and James and Gail Alcott of Glenmore, Pa.; his stepmother, Ella Alcott Chase; his brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Joel and Margaret Finch of Davenport Center, Betty Gransbury of Walton and Daniel and Vi Finch of Winter Springs, Fla.; his sisters-in-law, Mary Alcott of Albany and Virginia Alcott of Rochester; as well as several nieces and nephews and special friends, Jim and Evelyn Fisher of Oneonta, Bill and Gail Neville of Baltimore, Md., and Mary Ann Helmer of Davenport Center, and, as he called her, his "other daughter," Cindy Reynolds of East Meredith.

He was predeceased by his granddaughters, Sabrina and Necole Aldrich.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Wayne A. Alcott.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Stanley R. Phillips

HARTWICK — Mr. Stanley Robert Phillips, 80, of South Street in Hartwick died Wednesday morning, Feb. 9, 2005, at his home.

He was born April 29, 1924, in the town of Hartwick, a son of Andrew D. and Thelma G. (Tilley) Phillips.

He married Audrey Lane on Oct. 16, 1948, in Schenectady. Raised in Hartwick, Stan graduated from Hartwick High School with the class of 1942.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was twice wounded in action during the French liberation. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant March 3, 1946, and was awarded numerous citations, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Oak Leaf Cluster.

On July 18, 1949, Stan began a nearly 30-year career with the United States Post Office, working as a rural letter carrier until his retirement in 1978.

He was an honorary life member of the Hartwick Fire Department, a charter member of the Hartwick American Legion Post No. 1567 and a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association, as well as a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Stan was of the Baptist faith, and enjoyed vegetable gardening, playing bingo, finding bargains at garage and yard sales, deer hunting and most especially, spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Audrey; three sons, Daniel Phillips and his wife, Linda, Randy Phillips and his wife, Jennifer, and Michael Phillips, all of Hartwick; one daughter, Louise McAdams and her husband, Henry, of Burlington Flats; eight grandchildren, Daniel, John, Matthew, Christopher, Eric, Kristen and Savanna Phillips and Brian McAdams; four great-grandchildren, Thomas, Keanna, Daniel and Austin; one brother, Donald C. Phillips and his wife, Ina, of Hartwick; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John C. Young officiating.

Burial with military honors will take place at a later date in Hartwick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until service time Friday afternoon, when Stan’s family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy, in the form of memorial gifts, may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Sanford A. Haney

DEPTFORD, N.J. — The Rev. Sanford A. Haney, 88, passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2005.

Rev. Haney was a United Methodist pastor for 43 years, serving churches in Bay Head, Hamilton, Wayside, Beach Haven, Beach Haven Terrace, Keansburg, Hightstown, Pennsauken, Medford, Little Silver and Salem (all in New Jersey). After retiring in 1980, he was active in the Belmar United Methodist Church.

Surviving are sons, David (Margaret) and John; grandchildren, Jeremy, Jason, Luis (Trisha), Lanh Schauers (Chris); and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Carolyn Nutt (Hedley); a brother James (Angela); and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lois Salsbury, of Oneonta in 2001.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, at Belmar United Methodist Church, 7th and D Streets, Belmar, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Belmar United Methodist Church or Samaritan Hospice, 5 Eves Dr., Suite 300, Marlton, NJ 08053.

Frances Wormsley

WELLS BRIDGE — Frances Louise Wormsley, devoted wife and mother, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at her home. She died peacefully in her sleep. She was 80.

She was born in Roscoe on July 17, 1924, the daughter of William and Lula Davis. She graduated from Roscoe High School with the class of 1943. She took her first job in Hawley, Pa., working in a silk factory.

She soon moved to Walton, where she met her surviving husband, Orley John Wormsley. They were married June 30, 1944, and celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2004. In addition to her husband, Orley of Wells Bridge; she is survived by four children, William (Diane), Jalna Rudolph, John (Bobbie), and Robert (Tracy); grandchildren, Michael Rudolph Jr. (Amy), Mark Rudolph (Alonna), Patai Wormsley, Tonya Peterman, Christopher Wormsley (Haley), and Erin Wormsley; and three great-grandchildren, Taylor and Alexis Peterman and Benjamin Rudolph.

She was preceded in death by her son, Clarence.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Joyce A. Fontaine

MARYLAND — Joyce A. Fontaine, 62, of Maryland died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at the Albany Medical Center, Albany.

She was born May 27, 1942, in Treadwell, the daughter of Claude and Rosa (Decker) Dexter.

She married Raymond Fontaine on Jan. 26, 1967, in Oneonta. Mr. Fontaine predeceased her Jan. 22, 1985.

Joyce worked at Mold-A-Matic in Oneonta for several years. She enjoyed reading, playing computer games and crocheting. But most of all she loved spending time with her dog, Abby, and her cat, Butter.

Joyce is survived by one sister, Claudia Harris and her companion, Lawrence Worden, of Garrattsville; one brother, Eugene, and his wife, Cynthia Dexter, of Burlington Flats; one sister-in-law, Alicia Decker of Maryland; one brother-in-law, William Harris; seven nieces and nephews and their spouses, Daniel Harris, Amy Dill, Kenneth Decker Jr., Rosa Joslin, Mary Miller, Brett Dexter and Cathy Decker; as well as several grandnieces and nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her special friends, Bonnie and Jim French of Worcester, Carol and Charles Atcher of Otego, Edward Travis of Goodyear Lake and Edna Pentzien of Burlington Flats.

Joyce was predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth Decker Sr. and Dwight Dexter.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Tony LaBarca of Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will be held in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

David D. Hafele

BOVINA CENTER — David D. Hafele, 50, of Bovina Center passed away Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born March 17, 1954, the son of Robert and Sylvia (Brooks) Hafele.

He married Michelle Carpenter on Nov. 9, 1974, in Howes Cave.

A lifelong Delaware County resident, he attended school in South Kortright, Bloomville and Delhi.

David worked for many years on the Keith Rider farm in Davenport. He was also employed by various other farms around the area: the Weinmann Farm in Hobart, the Don Hebbard Farm in Treadwell and most recently for Ken All at North Kortright Dairies in Bloomville.

David loved being a farmer and served many as the "local handyman." He was truly a jack-of-all-trades. He could fix anything and would provide services for anyone, including friends and family.

He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, logging, bird watching and tending to his vegetable garden. He took great interest in anything having to do with World War II and John Wayne. He especially enjoyed listening to Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.

David was a devoted family man and loved his friends and family very much. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Michelle E. Hafele of Bovina Center; a daughter, Rebecca and her husband, Curt Callahan, of Maryland; a son, Jason Hafele of Bovina Center; a grandson, Justin Beams of Maryland; two sisters, Linda and her husband, Charlie Fletcher, of Meridale, and Maria and her husband, Oliver McAdams, of Margaretville; two sis-ters-in-law, Lori Loring of Richmondville and Denise and her husband, David Wainwright, of Schenectady; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his lifelong friends, Dave Madore and Rick Fletcher.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Lloyd and Frank Hafele; and his father and mother-in-law, Robert and Gene Carpenter.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at the Bloomville United Methodist Church with Pastor Don Klob officiating.

Friends are invited to greet the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Burial will take place in the spring at Bramenville Cemetery, Howes Cave.

Contributions are asked to be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 1249 Front St. No. 106, Binghamton, NY 13905, in memory of David D. Hafele.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.
