Frank Kukenberger Sr.

COOPERSTOWN — Frank Kukenberger Sr., 89, of Fork Shop died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 10, 2005, at Otsego Manor.

He was born on Feb. 26, 1915, in Johnstown, Pa., a son of Louis and Anna (Borstnar) Kukenberger.

He married Mary Katherine Konchar on July 20, 1940, at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Mary died Easter Sunday morning, March 31, 2002.

At the age of 2, Frank and his family moved to Cooperstown where he attended a one-room schoolhouse at the end of the Beaver Meadow Road on county Route 33

Throughout his life he always enjoyed farming. In his younger years, he and his father were among the original founders of the Fly Creek Milk Cooperative. Frank always felt that farming was best done the old fashioned way and would often recall tilling the fields in his youth using horses, and often felt sorry for working them so hard. For 60 years he owned and operated dairy farms, first on the Beaver Meadow Road and later in Fork Shop.

An avid old car fan, he owned several Ford Model As and Ts and enjoyed spending Friday nights at Jerry’s Place where other old car fans congregated. Frank was a member of the SNPJ, a Slovenian heritage club in Little Falls. True to his heritage, he was a musician who enjoyed playing the harmonica and the button box accordion.

He is survived by one daughter, Cynthia M. Kukenberger White and her companion, Robert S. Kolka, of Hartwick-; three sons, Frank A. Kukenberger Jr. and his wife, Ruth, of Cooperstown, Edward L. Kukenberger and his wife, Eileen, of Fly Creek and Robert J. In addition to his wife of 62 years, Mary, he was predeceased by one grandson, Christopher Todd White, who died Sept. 21, 2001, one brother, Lody Kukenberger, who died Oct. 9, 2002, and his sister, Rose Bentley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding.

Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Index.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when Frank’s family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 1 Birchwood Drive, Dept. FH, Oneonta, NY 13820, or a charity of one’s choice.
