Betsy W. McQuinn

OWINGS, Md. — Betsy Wood McQuinn, 74, passed away Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at her daughter’s residence in Owings, Md., from lung cancer. She was formerly of Unadilla.

She was born July 19, 1930, in Princeton, N.J. She was raised in Morristown, N.J., and was a 1948 graduate of Kent Place School in Summit, N.J. She was a graduate of the New England Baptist School of Nursing and completed her B.S. in nursing in 1995 at Beth-El College of Nursing in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1995, where she was awarded magna cum laude honors.

She married Thomas C. McQuinn on Sept. 15, 1951, at St. Peter’s Chapel in Morristown, N.J. They lived in New Jersey until moving to Hyattsville, Md., and later to Humingtown, Md., in 1957.

A homemaker and mother of three, she was also employed as a registered nurse at Prince George’s Hospital in Cheverly, Md., Calvert Memorial Hospital and Calvert County Nursing Center, both in Prince Frederick, Md. After moving to Woodland Park, Colo., in 1985, she also taught adult education in the G.E.D. literacy program. She retired in 1995, and she and her husband settled in Unadilla in 1997. Mr. McQuinn died April 8, 2004.

She was a member of MENSA, the Sierra Club and the Audubon Society, and also supported National Public Radio.

She enjoyed needlepoint, astronomy, classical music and working the New York Times crossword puzzle.

She is survived by her daughter, Laura M. Kratz of Owings, Md.; her sons, Michael T. McQuinn of Bancroft, W.Va., and Matthew L. McQuinn of Hedgesville, W.Va.; grandchildren, Megan, Ian and Emily McQuinn and Caitlin and Margaret Kratz; great-grandchildren, Paige Reames and Michael Sullivan; brother, David D. Wood of Moravia; and sister, Hannah S. Dinkel of Shelter, Island.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas C. McQuinn; sister, Ann W. Owens; and her parents, John A. Wood III and Marion Rhodes Wood Steuart.

Services will be private. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, N.J., at a later date.

Leland E. Gray

UNADILLA — Leland E. Gray, 86, of Unadilla passed away Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Jan. 20, 1919, in the town of Delhi, the son of William L. and Bertha M. (Terry) Gray.

He was married to Ruth M. Reynolds on July 8, 1939, in Sidney.

Leland was a graduate of Delaware Academy, Delhi; was employed at Scintilla Magneto of Sidney from 1939-1944; owned and operated a dairy farm in Sidney Center from 1944-1962; was employed at the former Western Auto in Sidney; and was employed as a finish carpenter for David M. Gray Construction of Unadilla, retiring in 1982.

Leland was an avid auto racing fan and enjoyed golfing. He was a member of the Unadilla United Methodist Church.

Leland is survived by his wife, Ruth M. Gray of Unadilla; his son and daughter-in-law, David M. and Patricia Gray of Unadilla; his daughter, Sandra J. Witherel of Wallkill; his sister, Leona Flick of Sidney; his grandchildren, Lorraine S. Corneilson of Ft. Knox, Ky., Michael D. Gray of Unadilla, Bradley Gray of Unadilla and Steven C. Boyd of Haverhill, Mass.; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by five brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off Exit 10 of I-88), with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, when the family will be in attendance.

Interment will be later in the spring in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc. of Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

JB Bunn

JEFFERSON — JB Bunn, 63, of Jefferson passed away Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at Kingston Hospital from complications from an automobile accident Dec. 12, 2004.

JB was born Jan. 20, 1942, in Fort Scott, Kan. He was the son of John Bunn and Ethel Higbee, both of whom predeceased him.

JB was a graduate of Wakefield High School in Colorado Springs and later received his associate’s degree while serving in the United States Navy.

He served 20 years in the U.S. Navy from June 1, 1959, to Jan. 1, 1978, which included 2˝ tours in Vietnam, at which time JB received numerous medals, including the Purple Heart.

JB was past post commander of Stamford VFW Post 6292 and was presently commander of the Otsedel Counties Council.

After retirement he worked for Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., tracking earthquakes for Allied Aerospace, taking early retirement in 1997.

At that time, he and his wife, Barbara, made their vacation home in Jefferson their permanent residence.

JB is survived by his wife, the former Barbara Mitchell of Rifton; and four sons and their wives, Harry Grubaugh and Maria of Connecticut, Clayton Bunn and Laura of Connecticut, Michael Grubaugh Sr. and Donna of New York, and Paul Bunn and Maria of Queens. He leaves his stepmother, Neva Bunn-Hite; and one brother, John Bunn Jr. of Deerfield, Mo.; as well as four sisters, Katie McCune and Margaret Ann Smith of Kansas, Deb Keller of Missouri; 12 grandchildren, Michelle, Kelly, Brianna, Ashley and Tyna of Connecticut, Michael Jr., Shannon, Bryan, Michael and Danielle of New York and Philip and Alissa of Rhode Island. He also leaves his very dear and close family friend, Theresa Anderson of Connecticut.

He was predeceased by his sister, Janie Rickard of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at which time the family will be present. Services with full military honors will be held at the funeral home at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, in the Stamford Baptist Church, Route 10, Stamford, with the Rev. Waylen Bray officiating. Burial will follow immediately at the Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, at 2 p.m.

All friends and family are invited to attend a celebration buffet honoring JB’s life, which will be held at the Stamford Veterans Club at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the American Diabetes Association.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Evelyn I. Smith

VAN HORNESVILLE — Evelyn I. Smith, 83, of Wiltse Road entered into eternal rest Monday night, Feb. 14, 2005, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born Oct. 4, 1921, in Fords Bush, daughter of the late Leroy J. and Ida Cronkite Smith.

A lifelong area resident, she was raised in Fords Bush and was a graduate of Fort Plain High School.

On Oct. 4, 1940, she was united in marriage with Oliver K. Smith in the Lutheran Church Parsonage in Fort Plain. It was a loving and devoted union of 58 years. Mr. Smith preceded her in death June 7, 1999. For 52 years, she and her husband owned and operated the O.K. Smith and Son Dairy Farm in Van Hornesville.

Mrs. Smith attended the Van Hornesville United Methodist Church and was a member of the Springfield Center Seniors Club.

As a homemaker, she enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and had taught cooking to the 4-H Club in Van Hornesville.

She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Evelyn was known to everyone as a warm and caring person, and she will be truly missed.

Surviving are three sons, Richard and his wife, Eleanor Smith, William D. "Willie" Smith and his companion, Sue Napoli, all of Van Hornesville, and Kenneth and his wife, Lisa Smith, of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Shirley and her husband, Gary Flint, of Azle, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Savannah.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.

Mrs. Smith will be laid to rest with her husband in the Van Hornesville Cemetery later this spring.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the American Heart Association or the Van Hornesville Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Hilda M. Clark

MOUNT UPTON — Hilda M. Clark, 84, of Mount Upton passed away Feb. 14, 2005, in New Berlin.

She was born April 27, 1920, in Windsor, the daughter of Datus and Jennie (Gardner) Hartwell.

Hilda married George Clark. He died in 1987.

She was employed by the Norwich Shoe Factory, Norwich. Hilda enjoyed playing her accordion with a local area band. She also loved to crochet and enjoyed working in her flower garden.

She is survived by her two sons, Lawrence Clark, Oneonta, and Robert and Mary Clark, Oneonta; grandchildren, Robert J. Clark, Saratoga Springs, Gary Clark, Binghamton, David Clark, Norwich, and Carrie Mitchell, Virginia Beach, Va.; 12 great-grandchildren; her loving companion, Ray Cogul, Mount Upton, and his family, Frank and Joan Zorda, Walton, Todd and Cindy Weir, Norwich, and Mark Weir, Brooklyn; one sister, Elma Miles, Mount Upton; one brother and sister-in-law, Datus and Pearl Hartwell, Bennettsville; one sister-in-law, Betty Hartwell, McLure; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder of the Mount Upton United Methodist Church officiating. Calling hour will be from 2 to 3 p.m. preceding the funeral service at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Interment will be in Maple Wood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Mount Upton Emergency Squad, Mount Upton, NY 13809.

Sarah E. Long

FRANKLIN — Sarah Elizabeth Long, 91, of Franklin passed away Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at her residence.

She was born May 24, 1913, in Raleigh, N.C., the daughter of Edmund and Edna (Diefenderfer) Wilson.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara W. Reynolds of Franklin; two grandchildren, Charles and his wife, Amy Reynolds, of Franklin, and Deborah and her husband, Albert Clune, of Sidney; and four great-grandchildren, Chris and Kim Reynolds and Erin and Allison Clune.

She was predeceased by her sister, Eleanor Jones.

A private graveside service will take place at the Clinton Cemetery in Clinton at a later date.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the Franklin Emergency Squad, Franklin, NY 13775.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

JB Bunn

Thelma Vroman

ONEONTA — A memorial service for Thelma "Tommie" Vroman, who passed away Feb. 3, 2005, will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Leatherstocking Region Office, State University at Oneonta, Oneonta, the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, or the Huntington Memorial Library, 62 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Yvonne Averill

COOPERSTOWN — Yvonne Averill of Cooperstown passed away Feb. 14, 2005.

Yvonne was born June 13, 1921, in Missoula, Mont., and grew up on a small farm as an avid tomboy and cowgirl with her own horse and animals.

She attended school in Missoula and after graduating went on to work and took college-level study in home economics and management.

She met her husband, E. David Averill, and they were married in 1942. Yvonne and David parented five sons, Gil, Clive, Timothy, Henry and Peter. David’s various jobs and pursuits took them to Spokane and Seattle, Wash., and during World War II they both worked for Boeing Aircraft in Denver, Colo. Yvonne was a "Rosie the Riveter" and relished her work.

They returned to Montana after the war, and David continued his work and studies as an artist and teacher.

In the mid-1950s they moved to the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, where Yvonne enjoyed an active social circle of friends.

In 1964, Yvonne and her family came to Cooperstown for David to study in the curatorial program at Fenimore House. He became a memorable art teacher at Cooperstown High School and Yvonne supported his work and raised her family.

They were active in the local Christian Science Society and continued their faith throughout their lives.

David passed on in 1987, and Yvonne enjoyed a rejuvenation in her life, helping raise a little girl through adolescence and adopting several barn cats for her household companions. She capably tended to her rental apartments and was renowned for her own lawn care on her riding mower. Her sons kept up with regular visits.

She enjoyed her close circle of friends and her women’s clubs, and was known for her holiday decor and meals. Her backyard crows, birds and squirrels will miss her daily visit. All who knew her were blessed with her love and kindness.

Yvonne died peacefully and tranquilly with her son Timothy at her bedside.

She is survived by Clive and Trudy Averill, their daughters, Heather and Ashley; Timothy Averill; Henry and Cheryl Averill; Peter Averill, his sons, Luke and Sam, Gorkem Cilam; and Millie Averill; her son, Brant and Lisa Averill, their sons, Cory and Eric.

Her son, Gil, and his son, Wolfgang Averill, predeceased her.

Yvonne wished for no funeral service, and in lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the local ASPCA in her memory.

Her family and friends will celebrate her loving and joyous contribution to their lives this summer.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Francis J. Mudge

OXFORD — Francis J. "Jim" Mudge Jr., 70, of Oxford passed away early Tuesday morning, Feb. 15, 2005, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital of Cooperstown.

Jim was born Aug. 9, 1934, in Plymouth, the son of Francis and Mary Brazee Mudge Sr.

On Aug. 24, 1974, he married Elvira Kenyon Mudge. She survives.

He grew up in the Plymouth and New Berlin areas and attended the New Berlin schools. Jim had formerly worked for the Norwich Pharmacal Co. and since his marriage had lived in Oxford where he worked the family farm.

In his leisure time Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing. Jim was also a veteran of World War II.

Jim is survived by his wife, Elvira "Honey" Kenyon Mudge of Oxford; his daughter, Frances "Judy" Breslin of Cooperstown; his granddaughter, Sarah Breslin; his sisters, Doris Douglas of New Berlin, Viola Madsen and her husband, Larry, of New Berlin, Gladys Pope of Gilbertsville and Mary Mudge of New Berlin; his brothers, Charles Mudge and his wife, Faye, of Morris, Bill Mudge of Morris, Ray Mudge and his wife, Hazel, of Colton and Roy Mudge and his wife, Vinnie, of South New Berlin. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Bessie Burdick and husband Bob of Norwich, Marion Warner of Norwich, Rosie Moreau of Oxford and Ruth Rippo of Florida; his brother-in-law, Jim Kenyon and his wife, Shirley, of Oxford; a special nephew and wife, Jim and Pauline Pope; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jim was predeceased by his sisters, Lucille Chambers and Julia Mudge; and his brothers-in-law, Charlie Chambers and Daniel Brazee.

At Jim’s request, there will be no public funeral or calling hours.

Beverly A. Hoot

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Col. (Ret.) Beverly A. Hoot, 73, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla., after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Hart, Mich. She attended St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in St. Petersburg.

She retired a full colonel after 37 years of service in the Army. She was a graduate of Army Command and General Staff College. She received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Her tours of duty included Japan, Korea, Ft. Lee, Va., the 3rd Army Headquarters in Atlanta, Ga., Army Reserve Command in Washington D.C., and as commander of the 32nd Transportation Group Army Reserves in Tampa, Fla.

She was a member of the Officers Reserve Association and lifetime member of V.F.W. Post No. 2752 in Schenevus.

Survivors include her friend, Jean M. Trask, St. Petersburg.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, St. Petersburg. Interment will follow in the church columbarium.
