Clarence J. Smith

HUBERT, N.C. — Clarence John Smith Sr., of Hubert, N.C., died at his home Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005.

Mr. Smith was a contractor with the phone company and served in the United States Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Florence Smith; his son, Larry Smith; and his sister, Josephine Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Swansboro, N.C., with the Rev. William Ray Davis officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, N.C.

Survivors are his wife, Karen M. Smith of the home; two daughters, Regina Henderson of Florida and Sandra Ellis of Seattle, Wash.; his son, Clarence Smith II of Florida; stepdaughter, Angela Forsythe and her husband, Wayne, of Hubert, N.C.; two stepsons, James Hanford of Worcester and Mark Hanford and his wife, Melissa, of Schenevus; six grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; one stepgrandchild; two sisters; and a brother.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home in Swansboro, N.C.

Hilda M. Clark

MOUNT UPTON — Hilda M. Clark, 84, of Mount Upton passed away Feb. 14, 2005, in New Berlin.

She was born April 27, 1920, in Windsor, the daughter of Datus and Jennie (Gardner) Hartwell.

Hilda married George Clark. He died in 1987.

She was employed by the Norwich Shoe Factory, Norwich. Hilda enjoyed playing her accordion with a local band. She also loved to crochet and enjoyed working in her flower garden.

She is survived by her two sons, Lawrence Clark, Oneonta, and Robert and Mary Clark, Oneonta; grandchildren, Robert J. Clark, Saratoga Springs, Gary Clark, Binghamton, David Clark, Norwich, and Carrie Mitchell, Virginia Beach, Va.; 12 great-grandchildren; her loving companion, Ray Cogul, Mount Upton, and his family, Frank and Joan Zorda, Walton, Todd and Cindy Weir, Norwich, and Mark Weir, Brooklyn; one sister, Elma Miles, Mount Upton; one brother and sister-in-law, Datus and Pearl Hartwell, Bennettsville; one sister-in-law, Betty Hartwell, McLure; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder of the Mount Upton United Methodist Church officiating. Calling hour will be from 2 to 3 p.m. preceding the funeral service at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Interment will be in Maple Wood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Mount Upton Emergency Squad, Mount Upton, NY 13809.

Louis Yakrus

ATLANTA, Ga. — Louis Yakrus, 79, of Atlanta, Ga., passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack at his home Friday, Feb. 11, 2005.

Graveside services were held Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at Eternal Hills Memory Gardens. Rabbi Julie Schwartz officiated.

Louis Yakrus was born Aug. 26, 1925, in Brooklyn to David and Ida (Drootin) Yakrus. He grew up in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and graduated from Eastern District High School.

He married Gloria Munach on March 11, 1950.

Louis was a sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. He served with the 937th Ordinance Heavy Automotive Maintenance Company (HAM). He was stationed in the World War II Pacific Theatre-Saipan and was wounded during the battle for Okinawa. He was awarded a Purple Heart.

Louis was employed at the General Post Office in Manhattan for 35 years. He was vice president of the local postal union for many years and was the supervisor of the night shift. In addition to his work in the post office, Louis was an insurance broker specializing in life, health and medical insurance.

In 1986, Louis and his wife retired to Snellville, Ga., later moving to Atlanta. While in Snellville, he was an active member of Temple Beth David and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), where he held several offices and helped plan programs.

In Atlanta, Louis was an active member of the tenants’ association of the Renaissance on Peachtree, where he resided with Gloria. He held a current-events session with the residents once a month, which was widely attended.

Louis Yakrus is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Irene and Richard Weinberg of Oneonta; his son and daughter-in-law, Mitchell and Susan Yakrus of Alpharetta, Ga.; grandchildren, David and Elyse Weinberg of Oneonta, and Rachel and Gregory Yakrus of Alpharetta, Ga.; and numerous cousins and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Louis was predeceased by a brother, who died in Russia before his parents emigrated to the United States. Louis was also predeceased by his loving wife, Gloria, of 54 years, who died just two months before his passing.

Because of his love and devotion to his wife who suffered from cancer, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Louis Yakrus.

Harold Freitag

TAPPAN — Harold Freitag, 83, of Tappan died peacefully Monday, Feb. 14, 2005.

He was born Oct. 8, 1921, in Tappan.

Harold served four years in the Navy during World War II. After several years employed as a professional model maker, he founded the Freitag Machine Shop, where he worked with several employees until retirement in 1999.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel, in 1993.

Harold is survived by his two sons, Mark of Jefferson and Ronald of Teaneck, N.J., and daughter-in-law, Karen; as well as several nieces and a nephew.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, with interment to follow at the family plot in Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill.

Adeline Christian

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Adeline Christian, 91, formerly of South New Berlin, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at the Harding Nursing Home in Waterville, where she had been a resident since 2001.

She was born in Bloomville on March 1, 1913, the daughter of Harry Brownell and Georgianna (Barker) Brownell. She was a graduate of Laurens Central School.

Adeline married Edward Christian on Jan. 19, 1935, in Oneonta. He died in 1990.

Survivors include her five children, Evelyn Graves of Norwich, Jane Shipman of Brookfield, Janet Beers of North Carolina, Helen Denmark of Hamilton and Ronald Christian of Norwich; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; as well as cousins, nephews and nieces.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services. Cremation was made at the Hillington Crematory in Morris, and burial of the cremains will be made in Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta, next to her husband, in the spring.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Billie Giamportone

HYDE PARK — Billie Giamportone, 78, of Hyde Park passed away suddenly Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, in Cooperstown from pneumonia.

Billie was born in Oyster Bay on May 12, 1926, the daughter of William Mayo and Elizabeth Mayo.

She received a bachelor’s in education from SUNY New Paltz in 1948, and a master’s degree, New Paltz.

Billie was employed by Pine Plains School District, was director of elementary math and was a teacher in Hyde Park School District. She retired in 1994.

She lived in this area for 53 years. Her previous residence was Highland.

She was married to Philip Giamportone on Sept. 1, 1946, in Highland. He died Aug. 30, 1996.

She was a member of various teachers organizations, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, New York State Teachers of Math and New York State Union of Teachers.

She was a member of the St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church.

Billie is survived by her daughter, Donna G. Moseley and husband James, New Berlin; son, Philip Giamportone and wife Doreen, Pok; grandchildren, Jake, Maria, Luke and Daniel Moseley and Michelle and Marissa Giamportone, Pok; several nieces and nephews; and in-laws, Pauline and Nick Paterno, Florham Park, N.J., Gracie and John Coratti, Pok, Domenick Giamportone and Irene Woodbrey, Pleasant Valley, Ernest and Marian Passante, Highland.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at Joseph J. Darrow Sr. Funeral Home Inc., Route 9, Hyde Park.

A funeral Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peter’s.

Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Pok.

Theodore Overton

BAINBRIDGE — The Rev. Theodore L. Overton, 81, of Bainbridge went into the Lord’s loving arms Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at his home.

He was born Nov. 9, 1923, son of the late Percy and Hazel (Terrell) Overton, in Lake Grove, Long Island.

Theodore married Ethlyn Ackerman on Sept. 19, 1948, in Cornwall. They spent five years as missionaries in Quito, Ecuador. He was a radio technician for HCJB.

The Rev. Overton and his family moved to Newburgh. There he was the pastor of the First Congregational Church of Newburgh for 29 years and retired in 1986.

He is survived by his wife, Ethlyn A. Overton, Bainbridge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel Lewis and Andrea Overton, Wallkill, and Timothy John and Joana Overton, Hamilton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan Joyce and Gerald Bourgeois, Unadilla, and Sharon and John Wiedeck, Wells Bridge; special cousin, Brian and Jeanne Fletcher, Sidney; two grandsons; seven granddaughters; numerous great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also predeceased by his daughter, Rebecca Lynn Overton.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. James Ingalls officiating.

Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newburgh at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Bible Society, 1865 Broadway, New York, NY 10023-7505, Radio Bible Class, PO Box 2222, Grand Rapids, MI 49501-2222, or Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Virginia Marks

MARGARETVILLE — Elizabeth Virginia (Ginny) Marks, 82, of Margaretville died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

She was born in Mamaroneck on July 2, 1922, the daughter of Harry and Virginia ’Noe’ Guthrie.

After her marriage to Willis Marks on July 6, 1946, in Mamaroneck, they lived, worked and raised their family in Margaretville.

Ginny graduated from Frederick Bellows High School in Mamaroneck in 1940, then attended the State University of New York at New Paltz, graduating in 1944. She taught elementary school at Roe-Jan Central School, Hillsdale, then at Margaretville Central School. Ginny was a pioneer, initiating the remedial reading program at Margaretville during the 1950s. She retired from teaching in 1978, after 34 years.

Ginny was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honorary society of women educators. She was active in the Margaretville United Methodist Church and as a volunteer in local organizations, including the Home Bureau.

She enjoyed arts and crafts and enthusiastically shared her artistic gifts with family and friends.

Surviving are her husband, Willis; her daughter, Cathy Hinkley; her son, Gary Marks; her grandchildren, Amy Hinkley, Beth Bush, Jeremey Marks, Nathan Marks and Kevin Sweeney; her great-grandchildren, Brandon Bush, Rhiannon Kearns, Ethan Bush and Taylor Hinkley; sons-in-law, Doug Hinkley and Rob Sweeney; and daughter-in-law, Terry Marks.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Vicki Sweeney; her brothers, Stephen and Herbert; and sister, Gertrude Lyon.

A memorial service will be held at the Margaretville United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, 2005. The service will be immediately followed by a reception at the church.

Friends will be received by the family at the church before the service.

There will be no calling hours.

The committal service will be at the Margaretville Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, PO Box 96268, Washington, DC 20090 to help support research into the causes and cure of Parkinson’s disease.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

George E. Lichtfuss

DELHI — George E. Lichtfuss, 83, a lifelong Delhi resident, passed away peacefully Friday morning, Feb. 18, 2005, at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

The son of Frank L. and Esme R. (Pecken) Lichtfuss, he was born Jan 20, 1922, at the family farm on Hollister Hill, Delhi, and was a 1942 graduate of Delaware Academy, where he was an outstanding athlete on the school baseball team, both as pitcher and first baseman and, subsequently, Delhi, Treadwell and Bloomville town baseball teams.

He married Dorothy (McAdams) Johnson, and spent his entire life on Hollister Hill where he operated the family dairy farm until retirement in 1991.

A member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and Delhi Grange, George also maintained a keen interest in high school sports, as well as national baseball leagues, throughout his life.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Johnson Lichtfuss; a stepson, Lloyd Johnson Jr.; his friend and caretaker, Theresa Shedd, all of Delhi; three stepdaughters, Dorothy Halstead of East Meredith, Helen Tallant of Knob Noster, Mo., and Renea Verner of Marshall, Texas; many grandchildren, including John Shephard, Louis Johnson and Joe Leonard, all of Delhi, and Ted Halstead of East Meredith; numerous great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Lichtfuss of Quincy, Pa; and two nieces, Lynn Brau and Pam Shreve.

He was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Eleanor Shephard, in 1995.

Friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday by Deacon Nancy Truscott, with burial later in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Meridale.

Memorial contributions may be made to Delhi Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Billie Giamportone

HYDE PARK — Billie Giamportone, 78, of Hyde Park passed away suddenly Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, in Cooperstown from pneumonia.

Billie was born in Oyster Bay on May 12, 1926, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Mayo.

Jean Carpenter

COOPERSTOWN — Jean Carpenter, 79, a resident of Otsego Manor, died Friday afternoon, Feb. 18, 2005, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Jean was born on July 5, 1925 in Cohoes, a daughter of John E. and Mary Elizabeth (Halloran) Carpenter.

Raised in the Albany area, Jean attended parochial schools and was of the Catholic faith. Over the years she resided in Rome and in Burlington Flats before moving to The Meadows in 1999.

She is survived by her brother, George Carpenter, and his wife, Lorraine, of Delmar and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Mrs. Mary Winkler, Mrs. Ann Manny and Mrs. Josephine Harper.

A graveside service will be offered at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, with Sr. Katherine Arseneau officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Elizabeth Weaver

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Elizabeth Weaver, 86, of state Route 80 entered into eternal rest Saturday morning, Feb. 19, 2005, at Otsego Manor, Cooperstown.

She was born Dec. 22, 1918, in the town of Warren, daughter of the late Curtis and Daisy Armstrong Seeber. A lifelong area resident, she was educated in Warren Elementary School and graduated from Richfield Springs High School.

Elizabeth was first married to Melzer Demorest. They moved to Springfield Center in 1945, coming from Cherry Valley. Mr. Demorest passed away in 1956.

On April 4, 1959, she was united in marriage with John Aaron Weaver in Richfield Springs. After a devoted union of 20 years, Mr. Weaver preceded her in death on Oct. 23, 1979.

Mrs. Weaver had worked for the Thomas Goodyear Turkey Farm, the Remington Arms Company in Ilion, and for 15 years served as the senior clerk for the Department of Motor Vehicles for Otsego County, retiring in 1985.

Elizabeth had a strong belief in God and was a member of the East Springfield Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

All who knew her will remember her friendly manner and warm smile. She will be greatly missed by many, especially her family.

Surviving are three sons and their wives, Charles and Janet Demorest, George and Donna Demorest, all of Springfield, and Herbert and Denise Weaver of Panama City, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, first husband, Melzer, and second husband, John, she was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Seeber Jr.; a daughter, June Sheldon, in 1994; and a grandson, Erik Sheldon, in 1995.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Young officiating.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends from 6 until 9 p.m. today.

Mrs. Weaver will be laid to rest in Springfield Center Cemetery later this spring.

Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
