Raymond H. Prior

SPRINGFIELD — Mr. Raymond H. Prior, 81, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, after a short illness.

He was born Jan. 6, 1924, in Phoenix, the son of Howard and Fannie (Rathbun) Prior.

On June 5, 1954, he married Jane Doyle. She survives.

Ray was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1941-1945 in the Pacific Theater, Battle of Midway and Guam.

A resident of Springfield for most of his life, he worked for New York Telephone as a lineman/cable splicer for 35 years.

He was a charter member of the Springfield Fire Department and a member of the NY Telephone Pioneers and VFW Cooperstown.

Survivors besides his wife, Jane Prior of Springfield, include a son, Ronald H. Prior; he was a "father figure" to Charlotte (Prior) Van Keuren; grandchildren, Ronald H. Prior Jr. and Sara Boll; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Olah Walton and Roselyn Potoczny; and several nieces and nephews.

Public calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with a eulogy at the conclusion by his grandson, Ron Jr.

Spring burial will take place in the Springfield Center Cemetery.

Contributions in Mr. Prior’s memory may be made to the Springfield Fire Department and Emergency Squad.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, under the direction of Michael W. Fox Jr.

Patricia Chambers

BINGHAMTON — Patricia Cornish Chambers, who was born Nov. 27, 1938, in Cooperstown, died Feb. 22, 2005, after a long illness. She passed peacefully at her home.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Chambers; and her parents, Norman and Francis Cornish.

She is survived by a son and his wife, Norman (Chuck) and Susan Chambers of Latham; three daughters and their husbands, Meri-K and Randy Ritter, Port Crane, Lori-Ann and Harold Parks, Port Crane, Jenniffer and Raymond Blewett, Binghamton; her grandchildren, Raenee, Marci and Devon Ritter and Bradley, William and Cassondra Blewett; a brother and his wife, Chip and Joanne Cornish, Schenectady; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was a graduate of Oneonta High School and attended the State University College at Oneonta.

She was employed by Bell Telephone of New York until her retirement in 1991. Pat was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and AARP, and was a communicant of St. Christopher’s Church, Binghamton.

Pat loved her family, her grandchildren, travel, covered bridges, fall foliage and family gatherings.

Her family would like to thank her many friends in the community for their dedicated love and support, and her friends at The Waters of Endicott.

A funeral Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Christopher’s Church, 103 Castle Creek Road, Binghamton. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends are invited to call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home Inc., 137 Robinson St., Binghamton.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made in her memory to the National Arthritis Foundation, PO Box 96280, Washington, DC 20090.

Carlton R. Odell

THORNWOOD — Carlton R. Odell (Carl) of Thornwood passed away Feb. 18, 2005, at the Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne. He was 76.

Mr. Odell was born Oct. 2, 1928, to Ralph and Bertha (Ballagh) Odell in Meredith. After graduating from Stamford Central School in 1946, he joined the United States Marine Corps during World War II and Korea from 1946-1952, achieving the rank of staff sergeant.

After serving his country, Mr. Odell attended the American Academy School of Funeral Directing in New York City. Mr. Odell was affiliated with the Ballard-Durand Funeral Home from 1953-1993, retiring as vice president and manager.

He was a life member of the White Plains Detachment of the Marine Corps League, past commander of the American Legion White Plains Post 135, past president and treasurer of the Exchange Club of White Plains, a member of the White Plains Masonic Lodge No. 473 and a member of the White Plains Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Odell is predeceased by his sister, Phyllis J. Blanchard.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Ginger) Fry Odell; his sister, Joyce B. Doyle; one niece; and five nephews.

Visitation was held 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Ave., White Plains. Internment will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.

Dorothy Cort

AFTON — Dorothy Cort, 82, of Afton and formerly of Roxbury passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at her residence in Afton.

Dorothy was born July 18, 1922, in the Bronx, the daughter of Warren Love Banyon and Esther Anna Phillips.

She married Thomas C. Cort on July 15, 1943, in the Bronx. He predeceased her June 2, 2000.

Dorothy worked as an assessor for the town of Accord before moving to Roxbury. She moved to Roxbury in 1986 from Ulster County. She worked at the Roxbury Central School and was known as "Grandma" to the students she assisted in different school programs.

Dorothy was a member of the Earle B. Dudley American Legion Post No. 686 Auxiliary, serving as a past chaplain, and was a former member of the Roxbury Senior Citizens.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Celia and husband George Lang, Afton, and Christine and husband Caesar Fucci, Freeport; four grandchildren, George Thomas Lang, Thomas C. Fucci, Daniel C. Fucci and Alicia Fucci; five great-grandchildren, George N. Lang, Michael T. Fucci, Mathew N. Fucci, Faith Fucci and Thomas Fucci; and two brothers, Richard Banyon, Connecticut, and Warren Banyon Jr., Stamford.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at the Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Burial will be in the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Contributions may be made in memory of Dorothy to the Earle B. Dudley American Legion Post No. 686 Auxiliary, care of Dawn Jones, PO Box 176, Grand Gorge, NY 12434.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

John Spaziani

ONEONTA — John Spaziani, 59, of Oneonta passed away at Bassett Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, after a short illness.

John was born Nov. 22, 1945, in Oneonta at Parshall Hospital, the son of Angelo and Olga (Aesman) Spaziani.

He attended St. Mary’s and Oneonta Senior High schools and also Delhi Tech. He served four years in the United States Air Force in Texas and California from 1964 to 1968. John was a self-employed carpenter for many years.

John is survived by his brother, Michael and his wife, Diane Spaziani, of Parish; his sister, Julie Spaziani of Oneonta; his little family of cats; a niece and nephew of Florida; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and his stepsister, Bonnie Simmons.

He was predeceased by his mother, Olga, in 1963; his father, Angelo, in 1970; and his sister, Paula Lee, in 1983.

Burial will be in the spring in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mt. Calvary, Emmons.

Kirk W. Michaels

PENFIELD — Kirk W. Michaels, 53, of Penfield died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, after an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 27, 1951, son of Howard and Adah Michaels of Mount Vision.

Kirk was a graduate of Laurens Central School and the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill.

He was married to Irene E. Bulter, who survives, at home.

Kirk was employed by Xerox in Webster for more than 25 years.

He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating with his family.

In addition to his loving wife, Irene, Kirk is survived by two daughters, Carrie and Gary Bliss of Parris Island, S.C., and Sara Michaels at home in Penfield; a granddaughter, Samantha Bliss; his father, Howard Michaels of Mount Vision; two brothers, Wayne (and Barbara) Michaels of Mount Vision and Jon Michaels of Goodyear Lake; two sisters, Cathy (and Paul) McCarthy of Latham and Ann (and Ronnie) Utter of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother, Adah Michaels.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the Arndt Funeral Home, 118 Long Pond Road, Rochester, followed by a private memorial service for family only.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lipson Cancer and Blood Treatment Center, care of Rochester General Hospital, 1425 Portland Ave., Rochester, NY 14621.

Florence Northrup

WALTON — Florence E. Northrup passed away Friday morning, Feb. 25, 2005, at home, surrounded by her loving family.

Florence lived a fun-filled life and was appreciated and loved by all who knew her.

Florence was born Sept. 5, 1912, on Holiday Brook in the town of Andes, a daughter of Myers and Ida Budine Jacobson. She was the 10th child in a family of 11.

On June 22, 1929, she married Frank Abel Northrup in Walton. She moved to the Northrup family farm and had six children while living there. She later moved to East Brook Road in Walton, where she resided since 1942.

Florence was employed by Dr. Walter Eells and his mother, Carrie Eells Smith, at Smith Hospital in Walton. Many local residents remember her as the cook for more than 30 years. Florence maintained the kitchen and was always willing to give a helping hand in the delivery room or during an emergency. Dr. and Mrs. Eells always relied on her for their Sunday dinner of chicken and biscuits. When she first worked at the hospital, she worked for more than three months without a day off.

Her daughter, Elinor, resided with, shared many good times and most recently provided care for Florence at the family home on East Brook. Florence always loved music and dancing. Her 91st birthday party was held in Walton with more than 300 friends and family in attendance for dancing and camaraderie. Her family members were always proud to receive her hand-crocheted afghans she continued to make until her death. No stitches were done on Sunday as it was reserved as the Day of the Lord.

Florence was a member of the Methodist Church in Walton for more than 60 years. She was always willing to lend a hand to those in need. Florence was a member of the Oneonta Women of the Moose, an active member of the dance clubs in Sidney and Oneonta and a past member of the Women’s Relief Corps.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Jacobson Allen of Sidney Center; her six children and their families, daughter Elinor and Calvin Pritchard of Walton; five sons and their families, Howard (Neal) of Walton, Milton and Joyce of Sidney, Richard and Cecelia, James, Roger and Linda, all of Walton; 23 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends, especially her friend Alma Pickett of Bloomville.

Frank, her husband, predeceased her in 1985. She was also predeceased by sisters Jennie, Anna, Mabel, Leah, Eunice and Maggie; brothers David, Isaac and Edward Jacobson; a grandson, David, in 1997; and a daughter-in-law, Irene (Jim) Northrup, in 2002.

Friends and family are invited to call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, at the Clark, Winter and Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at the First United Methodist Church, 101 North St., Walton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Walton. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available by contacting the funeral home.

Dwane A. Cornell

WORCESTER – Dwane Arthur Cornell, 45, passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown after a long battle with diabetes.

He was born Oct. 17, 1959, in Cooperstown, the son of Richard M. Cornell Sr. and Marjorie L. Smith.

Dwane liked to play bingo and spend time with his family.

He is survived by his mother, Marjorie Fleming of Worcester; his father, Richard Cornell Sr. of Florida; two brothers, Richard Cornell Jr. of Oneonta and William Cornell of Worcester; a sister, Roberta and her husband, William Burr, of Schenevus; special friends, Paul Jump of Summit and Fred Hubbard and Deb of Summit; nephews, Richard Cornell III of Ft. Hood, Texas, and Jimmy Beers of Walton; a niece, Summer Burr of Schenevus; several stepnieces; an uncle, Paul and his wife, Ginny Smith, of Schenevus; an aunt, Dorothy Smith of Davenport Center; and cousins, Michelle, Holly, Heather, Peggy and Allen.

He was predeceased by his stepfather, Robert Fleming; an uncle, Sherman Smith Sr.; a cousin, Sherman Smith Jr.; and a good friend, Freddy Short.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Home in Worcester.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 28, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor at the Worcester First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial will be later in the Maple Grove Cemetery.

The family thanks Dr. Raquel Rosen, the staff at the Bassett Dialysis Unit and the Worcester Emergency Squad for the care and support shown to Dwane.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Muriel Molloy

ONEONTA — Muriel Helen Molloy, 79, of Oneonta and formerly of West Burlington died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born in Richmond Hill on Aug. 1, 1925, the daughter of William G. Adams and Ethel Helen (Rhodes) Adams.

She was married to Allen C. Molloy in 1946 in Roosevelt. He died Feb. 27, 1995.

Muriel and her husband operated "Molloy’s General Store" in West Burlington for more than 21 years, retiring in 1985. She was formerly of Long Island.

She is survived by her two sons, Thomas Molloy of San Clemente, Calif., and Michael Molloy and wife Lindora of Edmeston; her two grandchildren, Christopher Molloy and wife Kristina of Richfield Springs and Erica Molloy of Fredericksburg, Va.; her two great-grandchildren, Karena Molloy and Christopher Molloy II; a sister-in-law, Ann Molloy of Mount Vision; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Doris Calhoun, and a brother, Robert Adams.

Memorial funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, at St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta with the Rev. Kenneth Hunter officiating.

Entombment will follow in the St. James Columbarium.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Florence Sagik

WORCESTER — Florence Juanita "Nita" Sagik, 79, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2005.

She was born Oct. 23, 1925, in Wright County, Mo., the daughter of Alvin and Clara (Boykin) Hamrick.

She was married for almost 46 years to Dr. Bernard Phillip Sagik, professor emeritus of Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pa. They lived in Philadelphia from 1979 to 1997, then retired to Worcester.

Nita was an avid reader and had a love of art and history.

She is survived by her children, Tamara Sagik, Stephen Sagik, Debra Banks and Paul Banks; grandchildren, Zafka and Tanya Banks-Christensen, David Sagik Banks, Sarah and Peter John-Banks and their partners; and a great-grandson, Noah Banks; as well as several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

There will be no services.

Mildred (Filer) Van Vranken

EDMESTON — Mildred (Filer) Van Vranken, 79, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at her home in Edmeston.

Millie was born in the town of Butternuts on Feb. 24, 1926, to Adelbert and Grace (Utter) Filer. She graduated from Gilbertsville Central School and attended an accelerated nursing program at Hartwick College.

She married John Van Vranken in Gilbertsville on Sept. 15, 1945. In 1946, they bought a farm outside Edmeston and operated it until 1979. Millie was also a certified nursing assistant for many years at Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin, retiring at 72.

Millie was known for her fierce determination, her devilish sense of humor, her come-and-get-it whistle and her great pleasure in family reunions.

She will be deeply missed by her husband, John, and sons, John Jr. (Alta) and Robert (JoAnn) of Edmeston; daughters, Suzanne (Frank) Yaple of Berkshire, Sandra (Dee Sheffield) Van Vranken of Rochester, Carolyn (Rich) Patrickson of Mexico, Sharon (Brad) Mumbulo of Edmeston and Nancy (David) Haley of Valley Cottage; 11 grandchildren; two "adopted grandchildren" and five great- grandchildren; her "adopted sons" Billy (Lori) Gray and Walt (Carolyn) Carney of Edmeston; brother Carl (Esther) Filer of Union Springs; sisters, Esther Chandler of Hawley, Pa., and Wanda (Ken) Beach of Morganton, N.C.; sister-in-law Phyllis Filer of Norwich; and many nieces and nephews.

Brothers Donald and Louis Filer and sisters Luella Van Vranken and Gladys Barber predeceased Millie.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, with Pastor Jay Henderson officiating. Family will receive friends and family one hour before the service. A luncheon for family and friends will be held at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church Annex, Burlington Flats, at the conclusion of Millie’s service.

Contributions may be made in Millie’s memory to the Edmeston Emergency Squad or Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.
