Robert J. Wayman

ASHLAND — Robert J. Wayman Sr., 81, of Ashland passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Robert was born March 15, 1923, in Charleston, N.Y., the son of Arthur Wayman and Ella Reed.

He married Marjorie Brand.

Robert worked as a truck driver for G&H Lumber in Windham. He lived in Ashland for 36 years.

Robert is survived by his wife, Marjorie Wayman; four daughters, Theresa (Donald) Speenburgh, Arlene (Watson) George, Irene (Rodney) Woodworth and Melody (Greg) Shomo; one son, Robert (Joyce) Wayman Jr.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers; five sisters; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. until the service time at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2005, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Diana Smith officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Ashland.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Elizabeth ’Betty’ McVinney

ONEONTA — Elizabeth "Betty" McVinney passed away March 3, 2005, at the Oneonta Nursing Home after a brief illness.

She was born July 8, 1918, in Manlius, the daughter of Frank Wood and Grace (Fuller) Platt.

She was predeceased by her parents and three siblings, Richard Platt, Katherine Platt and Sarah Wiley King.

She attended Syracuse University and married Clifford "Mac" A. McVinney on Sept. 1, 1938. They came to Oneonta in 1946, with "Mac" serving as vice principal and boys guidance counselor at Oneonta High School. He retired in 1975 as director of admissions at SUCO and died Oct. 23, 1995.

Betty returned to college in the 1960s, earning her BA degree and teaching certificate from the State University College at Oneonta. For a period of time she worked for the Oneonta School District under grants to prevent students dropping out of school before graduation.

For most of her life she was a homemaker and an avid reader, puzzle solver, gardener and antique collector. She dabbled in fine and creative arts and, as she said, "mastered none but enjoyed them all."

Betty is survived by three children and their spouses, Charles R. McVinney (Linda), Sarah E. Bush (Gary) and Richard W. McVinney (Kathleen). In addition she is survived by six grandchildren, Erin Elizabeth (McVinney) Tierney, Christopher Ryan McVinney, Megan Elizabeth McVinney, Richard William McVinney, Christopher Lundy Bush and Liza Vanessa McVinney; and one great-grandchild, Liem Mark Tierney.

At her request, there will be no formal service, and a graveside interment service at Glenwood Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Clifford and Elizabeth McVinney Dollars for Scholars Scholarship endowed fund, care of Oneonta High School; Catskill Area Hospice; or a charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

James A. McDonald

DELHI — James A. McDonald, 71, of Delhi died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at O’Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born July 19, 1933, in Meridale, the son of John and Lena (Gransbury) McDonald.

He married Patricia Northup on June 8, 1955, in Unadilla.

A veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1953 to 1955, James was employed as a construction worker for Lane Construction in Binghamton. Retiring in 1980, he and his wife spent the last 20 years managing hotels for a national chain. They spent the majority of the time out west in Arizona and California. They have been residents of Delhi for the past four years.

Surviving James is his wife of 49 years, Patricia of Delhi; four sons, Alan W. McDonald of Pennsylvania, James D. McDonald of Pennsylvania, Dale A. and Cindy McDonald of Anoka, Minn., and Timothy E. McDonald of Reno, Nev.; one daughter, Penny L. and Ralf Hack of Luton, England; five grandchildren, Missy, Justin, Stephanie, Amy and TJ; four great-grandchildren, Matthew, Amber, Joey and Jade; and three sisters, Izetta and Roy Fore of Rockdale, Joyce Goodrich of the Sidney Nursing Home, Sidney, and Charlotte Lambert of the Oxford Veterans Home, Oxford.

He was predeceased by a son, Daniel J. McDonald, on Nov. 22, 2004.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Jeff Staples officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place in the spring at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at a time yet to be determined.

Contributions are asked to be made to the Delhi Fire Department and the Delhi Emergency Squad, in loving memory of James A. McDonald.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Bruce J. McClenon

WALTON — Bruce J. McClenon, 94, a lifetime resident of Walton, passed away early Friday morning, March 4, 2005, in Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City, after a short illness.

Mr. McClenon was born Sept. 25, 1910, in Hamden, the son of the late Bert and Mabel Tiffany McClenon.

On Nov. 24, 1932, he married Freda Beecher in Franklin. He and his wife, Freda, owned and operated the Brulene Farm. Mr. McClenon was a member of the Holstein-Fresian Association of America. In his free time he loved to hunt, fish, play dominoes and pinochle and was a great Delaware County Fair-goer.

He is survived by his son, Donald, and Connie McClenon of Walton; a daughter, Janet Hoyt of East Meredith; eight grandchildren, Lorraine and Brian Francisco, Thomas and Norma Hoyt, Penny Hoyt, Edward and Ann McClenon, Andrew and Malissa McClenon, Casey and Stacey McClenon, Kami and Nathan Munn, Ashley McClenon and her fiance Kyle Bowker; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Freda, on March 28, 2000, a daughter, Arlene McClenon, on April 22, 2002, two brothers, Ralph and Robert McClenon, and a son-in-law, Norman Hoyt.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the Clark, Winter and Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, with the Rev. Peggy Fabrizio officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions in Mr. McClenon’s memory may be made to Walton EMS, 61 West St., Walton, 13856. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available by contacting the funeral home.

Lucille R. Quirk

Lucille R. (Lucy) Quirk, 90, of East Platner Brook, Delhi, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at home.

She was born July 18, 1914, in Tuckahoe, the daughter of Hermann and Augusta (von Seidlitaz) Richter.

She married Walter S. Quirk on Feb. 4, 1940, in East Chester. He predeceased her Jan. 6, 1987. Lucy and Walter moved to East Platner Brook in June 1959 from East Chester. She was employed by Delaware County as a probation assistant from 1965 until her retirement in 1979. An avid reader, Lucy enjoyed reading books all her life and eventually relied on audio books for entertainment because of her failing eyesight. A cat lover and horse lover, Lucy took great enjoyment in teaching horseback riding to others. She enjoyed socializing and visiting when she was able.

She is survived by three nieces, Carolyn Goff of Sun City, Ariz., Phyllis DiSalvo of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mary Lou DeFate of Gahanna, Ohio; three nephews, Albert Gullow of Delhi, Paul Kaiser of Florida and Robert Quirk of Bethel, Conn.; several great-nieces and great-nephews; her "adopted family," Robert and Jane Griffin of Bloomville and their children, Marlena Funk of Portsmouth, Va., and Regina Dianich of Stamford; and her many Hospice family members, especially Kim Aldrich of Walton and GJ Strain of Downsville.

She was also predeceased by a brother, Werner E. Richter, and a sister, Ruth B. Chiapetta.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, March 7, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with Father Edward Ryan officiating.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Contributions are asked to be made to either Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 116 Main St., Delhi, NY 13753 or the Blind Association of Western New York, PO Box 398, Buffalo, NY 14209, in loving memory of Lucy R. Quirk.

James Raymond Couse

WORCESTER — James Raymond Couse, 29, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 3, 2005, at his home on Cook Street in Worcester.

James was born Jan. 14, 1976, the son of George R. Couse and Pamela A. Couse of the Milford area. He graduated from Milford BOCES. James loved everyone and everything unconditionally. He had a love of music, games, basketball and his Lord. He also especially loved helping the Milford Fire Department with their various benefits.

James is survived by his parents, Pamela and Jack Fisher of Winchester, Va., and George and Dee Couse of Milford; a stepbrother, Edward A. Underwood and his wife, Kerriann, of Hamden; his niece and best friend, Taylor M. Underwood; his grandmother, Emily Couse of Portlandville; his grandfather, Charles Quinnelly of Winchester, Va., and his great-grandmother, Erna Basore of Kansas. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins and his special friends and family on Cook Street in Worcester.

James was predeceased by his grandfather, Clark Couse, and his grandmother, Barbara Quinnelly.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, March 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home on Route 28 in Milford.

Funeral services for James will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 7, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford with the Rev. Rob Kazinski, pastor of the Milford United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Jane Pykus, pastor of the Worcester United Methodist Church, co-officiating.

Burial will be in the Milford Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who so desire, make memorial contributions to the Upstate Home for Children and Adults c/o Kathy Yaeger-Kroll, 12 Cook St., Worcester NY 12197, in memory of James.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Marcella J. McCabe

JEFFERSON — Marcella J. McCabe, 87, died Tuesday, March 2, 2005, surrounded by her family at the Robinson Terrace in Stamford. Marcella lost her long battle with emphysema and Alzheimer’s, and went to meet the "Man" upstairs.

Marcella was born in New York City, the daughter of Joseph and Florence Sauer. Early in life they moved to Valley Stream, Long Island, where she attended and graduated from Valley Stream Central High School. She attended business school and was employed at General Motors Acceptance Corporation in Hempstead, Long Island.

Marcella married William I. McCabe on June 9, 1940. They resided in Valley Stream until 1948, when they moved to the Centerport/Greenlawn area outside of Huntington, Long Island, where she and her husband enjoyed the beaches and boating on Long Island Sound.

When Marcella’s husband retired in 1974, they moved to Jefferson. She spent well more than a thousand hours of volunteer service at the Stamford Community Hospital, volunteered at blood drives and was an active member of the "Inner Wheel," an organization of Rotarians’ wives.

She and her husband enjoyed camping at Myrtle Beach and winters in Florida until Marcella was diagnosed with emphysema and Alzheimer’s.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years; her two sons, William and daughter-in-law Kathie of Jefferson, and Donald of Wilmington, N.C.; her daughter, Marsha Harrington; one granddaughter, Heather; one great-granddaughter, Simone, all of Saratoga Springs; two grandsons, Brian McCabe of Nyack, and Daniel Harrington and (wife) Rachael of Bristol, Conn.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Jefferson United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Frank Adams officiating.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to Robinson Terrace Quality of Life Fund, Stamford, NY, 12167.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Lucille R. Quirk

DELHI — Lucille R. (Lucy) Quirk, 90, of East Platner Brook, Delhi, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at home.

Peter S. Synek

DELHI — Peter S. Synek, 64, of Meredith Road, Delhi, a 10-year resident, passed away Friday morning, March 4, 2005, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, after an extended illness.

The son of the late William and Marie (Kytlica) Synek, he was born Sept. 15, 1940, in Astoria and married Eva (Kallman) Meyn April 15, 1989, in Garden City.

A member of the state Retired Teachers Association, Peter received his bachelor’s degree from SUNY Oswego, a master’s in education from Hofstra University and, for 33 years, taught both industrial arts and driver’s education in the junior and senior high schools in the Baldwin, Long Island, school district, retiring in 1995.

Formerly of Hempstead, Peter was an expert craftsman and carpenter, and built and installed fine ornamental woodwork in several area homes after moving to Delhi.

Surviving are his wife, Eva L. Synek, at home; two sons, William (Nancy) Synek, of South River, N.J., and Brett Synek, of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Coreen Synek, of Lindenhurst, and Dawn (William) Ellingham, of Greensboro, N.C.; a stepson, Christian (Claudia) Eklund, of Deer Park; six grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Fuller of Dallas, Texas, and Laura Breaunig of Key West, Fla.; a brother, Robert Synek, of Fredericksburg, Texas; a sister-in-law, Barbro Barnes, of Red Bank, N.J.; nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m., that evening by the Rev. Bert More.

Memorial contributions to Delhi Emergency Squad, or the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, Delhi, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Edward Jennings Jr.

ONEONTA — Edward "Ted" G. Jennings Jr. passed away peacefully Saturday, March 5, 2005, at home with his family at his side.

Ted was born Oct. 16, 1949, in New Rochelle, the son of the late Edward Sr. and Esther "Didi" Hallberg Jennings. He grew up in the Yorktown Heights area, graduated from Yorktown High School and was active with the Yorktown Fire Department.

In 1968, he began working for New York Telephone in Port Chester, transferred to Oneonta in 1987, and retired in May of 1995.

Ted was an avid pool player and played in many New York state and Pennsylvania tournaments. In 1995, a dream of owning a billiard room finally came true when he took over ownership of Brass Rail Billiards. He eventually gave up the billiard room and went into billiard sales and service with his sons until his illness.

Ted loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and his family. He was looking forward to a new grandchild in the fall. He always had a silly joke or story to tell. His loving family and his many friends will sadly miss him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Laurine (Perry), whom he married April 11, 1992; his children, Gregory, at home, Debbie and son-in-law Bill Rohde of East Meredith, and Edward III "Ted" and daughter-in-law Jenevieve of Oneonta; his grandchildren, Bill, Jason, Michelle and Rebekah Rohde and Trystan Jennings; mother-in-law, Barbara Blanchard; father-in-law, Leroy Perry; sisters-in-law, Linda Perry and Russ Bauer and Diane Perry-Pleban; brothers-in-law, Mike and Denise Perry and George and Marion Starr; and many other relatives.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home in Oneonta.

On Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, the family will be present to receive friends from 11 a.m. to the service time at noon with the Rev. Thomas Clemow, pastor, officiating.

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Eunice I. Francis

GRAND GORGE — Eunice I. Francis, 80, of Grand Gorge passed away Saturday, March 5, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Eunice was born March 29, 1924, in Elk Creek, the daughter of Lester S. Collison and Flossie Ritchey.

She married Charles Francis on April 18, 1942, in East Worcester. He predeceased her March 1, 1972.

Eunice graduated from Andrew S. Draper Central School in Schenevus in 1941. Eunice worked for Greendell Meat Packing Company in Prattsville for 30 years. She also worked in the mailing department for the Catskill Mountain News and Mirror Recorder newspapers for several years, and she moved to Grand Gorge in 1952.

Eunice was a member of the Earle B. Dudley American Legion Post No. 686 Auxiliary, Grand Gorge. She was a person who loved to knit sweaters and afghans, making several sweaters for many family members. She has made christening dresses that are still being used by family members. She enjoyed baking, crossword puzzles and reading.

Eunice is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Lenita and Kenneth Brogna, Louisville, Ky., Audrey and Robert Townsend, Roxbury, and Susan and George Hoyt, Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Harriet Connelly and Ida Simmons; two brothers, Lester Collison and William Collison; sister-in-law, Mary VanBuren; seven grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Janet Hollenbeck.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today, March 7, 2005, at Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at the Miller Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Burial will be held at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, Grand Gorge.

Contributions in memory of Eunice may be made to the Earle B. Dudley American Legion Post No. 686 Auxiliary, care of Dawn Jones, PO Box 176, Grand Gorge, NY 12434 or Grand Gorge Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
