Peter C. Groh

ONEONTA — Peter C. Groh, 79, of Oneonta died Saturday, March 19, 2005, at his home.

He was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Mannheim, Germany, the son of Peter and Mary (Nigel) Groh.

He married Ruth A. Treiber on Nov. 5, 1950, in West New York, N.J. She predeceased him March 19, 2002.

Peter served his country in the United States Air Force from 1945 until 1951.

He worked as a meat cutter in various supermarkets in northern New Jersey until 1965. Peter operated a dairy farm in Delhi until 1970, at which time he returned to meat-cutting, working for Great American Supermarkets as well as P&C Foods. Peter and his wife moved to Oneonta in 1980, retiring from meat cutting in 1987.

Peter enjoyed antique cars, old movies and gardening. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Delhi, and most recently a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta.

He is survived by his son, Eric Groh, and his wife, Patricia, of Delhi; his two grandchildren, Brian and Jenna Groh of Delhi; his brother, Walter Groh, and his wife, Carol, of Montgomery; many nieces and nephews as well as several cousins.

There will be no funeral services.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Andes Road, Delhi, NY 13753, in Peter’s memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Evelyn Blanco

MIDDLEFIELD — Mrs. Evelyn Blanco, 64, passed away Friday, March 18, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born Aug. 12, 1940, in Kneoza Lake, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Wolff) Weissmann. In November 1964, she married William Blanco in Hawthorne; he survives.

Evelyn enjoyed gardening and shared her love of flowers and plants with her many friends.

She served as an election official and Middlefield deputy registrar of vital statistics. During her 15-year membership in the town of Middlefield Historical Association, she served as president and secretary and remained on the board of directors. She will be remembered for her devotion to family, steadfast friendships and community service.

Survivors besides her husband, William Blanco of Middlefield, include a daughter, Judy Blanco of Seattle; a son, Lance, and his wife, Kristine, Blanco of Sacramento, Calif.; and a grandson, Wilson Blanco.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, March 21, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating. Calling hours will precede the service from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Evelyn’s memory may be made to the Middlefield First Responders, Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 1, Cooperstown, or Town of Middlefield Historical Association Endowment Fund, Box 348, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Ruth A. Dickinson

DEPOSIT — Ruth A. Dickinson, 98, of Barbourville in the town of Deposit died March 19, 2004, at the Skilled Nursing Facility at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, George A. Dickinson, in 1989; and later by a daughter, Shirley Dickinson.

She is survived by three daughters, Anita Schmitz and Wendy Caldiero of Afton and Nancy Vitarius of Windsor; a son, George Dickinson of Gilbertsville; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Masonville Federated Church, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 345 in Masonville, and the Cold Springs Homemakers.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at the Zacharias Funeral Home, 78 Second St., Deposit, with the pastor of her church, the Rev. Robert Howard, officiating. Friends may call noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Masonville Cemetery.

Friends wishing may make donations to the Masonville Federated Church, PO Box 279, Masonville, NY 13804 in memory of Ruth A. Dickinson.

Frank J. Matonis

DELHI — Frank Joseph Matonis Jr., 69, of Delhi and formerly of the South Kortright Adult Home, South Kortright, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 19, 2005, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born April 23, 1935, in Brooklyn, the son of Frank and Clarice (Lewis) Matonis.

He married Jennie DeLisi on Oct. 24, 1980, in Queens.

Retiring in 1985, after being employed for 25 years as a stockbroker on Wall Street, Frank and his wife, Jennie, moved to the Delaware County area. Eventually they settled in Sidney. Because of failing health, Frank was forced to take residence a few years ago in a nursing home.

He is survived by his wife, Jennie Matonis of Sidney; three children from a previous marriage, Lucretia Keltsma, Roxanne Matonis and Frank Matonis III, all of Brooklyn, and children, Frank Matonis IV, Clarice, Edwinn, Alex, Victor, Genneece, Bradford and Gregory Matonis, all of Sidney; a sister, Margaret and Dick Carter of Missouri; three brothers-in-law, Patrick and Maryon DeLisi of Verona, N.J., Dominic and Loretta DeLisi of Queens and Anson and Rosalee DeLisi of Queens; and two sisters-in-law, Barbara and William Calabrasee of Queens and Antoinette and Robert Romano Jr. of Queens; and four nieces, Betty Ann and Linda LaCarta of Bay Shore, Long Island, and Isabelle and Sophia DeLisi of Verona, N.J.

He was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Beatrice and Dick LaCata; and a brother, Edwinn Matonis.

Calling hours will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. immediately following with Father Edward Ryan officiating.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

George J. Sheehan

STAMFORD — George J. Sheehan, 83, of Stamford and formerly of Margaretville, passed away March 21, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

George was born Nov. 23, 1921, in Brooklyn, the son of George J. and Byrne (Donohue) Sheehan.

He married Ellen E. Tiernan on May 21, 1948, in Freeport.

George served in the United States Army during World War II as an aircraft mechanic. He worked in Jamaica, in the family-owned hardware business. After moving upstate, he worked in Kingston and Boiceville hardware stores.

He was a member of Middletown American Legion Post 216 and the Sacred Heart Parish, Margaretville.

George enjoyed going to flea markets, buying old tools to repair and resell. He also had woodworking skills, making coat racks and selling them.

George is survived by his wife, Ellen Sheehan, Stamford; two sons and daughters-in-law, George and Eileen Sheehan and Donald and Patricia Sheehan; five daughters and sons-in-law, Christine Ryan, Janet and Gary Thompson, Ellen Sheehan Dunn, Lorraine and Tom Moore and Jessica and Joseph Latorraca; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Jeanne Sheehan; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2005, at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. James J. McDevitt officiating.

Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery at a later date.

In memory of George J. Sheehan, donations may be made to the Middletown American Legion Post 216, Margaretville, or the Alzheimer’s Association Leatherstocking Branch, Health Center Room 113, State University College at Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Alton D. Adams

EAST WORCESTER — Alton D. Adams, 81, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2005, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born April 4, 1923, in Cobleskill, the son of David and Leona (Davis) Adams.

Mr. Adams married Minnie Roe Gallup on May 18, 1957, in Charlotteville. She predeceased him Dec. 2, 1999.

Mr. Adams was employed at General Electric in Schenectady as an assembler in the Division of Motors Department, retiring in 1974. He also worked part-time for the town of Worcester Highway Department.

He was a member of the East Worcester United Methodist Church and the Cobleskill Eagles Club, and an honorary and life member of the East Worcester Fish and Game Club. Mr. Adams especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Mr. Adams is survived by his children, Mrs. Spencer (Priscilla) Davis of Leesburg, Fla., Mrs. William (Joanne) Fisher of East Worcester, Mrs. Jack (Bunnie) Hand of Oneonta and Burdette and Connie Gallup of Oneonta; 10 grandchildren, George Jenkins of East Worcester, Donald Jenkins of East Worcester, Terry Lorette of Worcester, Tammy Jenkins of Ocoee, Fla., Stacy Reed of Ormond Beach, Fla., William Fisher II of East Worcester, Michelle Stocking of Cherry Valley, Kimberly Gwozdz of East Springfield, Amy Harrington of Oneonta and Toby Gallup; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Shuflet, in 1989.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 24, at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. George I. Goodwin Jr., retired, officiating.

Interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, will take place at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Adams to the East Worcester First Responders, PO Box 781, East Worcester, NY 12064 or the Worcester Emergency Squad, PO Box 191, Worcester, NY 12197.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Audrey Bruno

FRANKLIN — Audrey Jackson Bruno, 88, of Franklin passed away Sunday, March 20, 2005, after an extended illness.

She was born June 15, 1916, in Pelham, the daughter of Matilda (Ellison) and Harry Jackson.

Audrey married Alfred L. Bruno on June 10, 1950, in Olive Bridge.

Audrey and her family lived in New Rochelle. In 1966, they bought a farm in Franklin where they enjoyed many summers and holidays until moving to California in 1969. The family returned to Franklin in 1976.

Audrey loved tending to her many gardens and spending time with her friends and family, which she held very close to her heart.

The family will miss Audrey ("Momu" to her grandchildren) greatly, but they are happy she is finally at peace.

Audrey is survived by her husband, Alfred; her son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Debra (Zurn) Bruno, all of Franklin; her daughter, Audrey Elin and son-in-law, Martin Stranagan of Cape Coral, Fla.; grandchildren, Cara LeFever and her son, Damien (great-grandson) of Franklin, Kyle, Raymond and Kristin Stranagan of Cape Coral, Fla.; brother-in-law, Eugene and sister-in-law, Lucille Bruno of Treadwell; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents; and three brothers, George, Harry and Dudley Jackson.

Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Drive, Department FH, Oneonta, NY 13820-1319.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Maude M. Head

NEW BERLIN — Maude Melissa (Camp) Head, 90, of New Berlin passed away Saturday, March 19, 2005, in Norwich.

Maude was born Nov. 19, 1914, in Sidney, the daughter of Floyd and Ethel (Spencer) Camp.

She married George Head on Aug. 12, 1942. He predeceased her July 18, 1969.

She spent her childhood in the Sidney area. She was a homemaker. She loved reading, sewing and embroidering.

Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005, with a funeral service at 11 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Stephen Reese of the Columbus Community Church, town of Columbus, officiating.

Burial will be held in the Masonville Cemetery, Masonville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Matthew Ladlee

DELHI — Matthew Scott Ladlee, 20, of Monroe Road, town of Meredith, died Monday, March 21, 2005, at home surrounded by family.

He was born Sept. 5, 1984, in Oneonta, the son of Daniel and Ella (Bauer) Ladlee.

He graduated from Delaware Academy and Central School in June 2004.

An avid video gamer, he studied digital animation at Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica, in the fall of 2004. He loved to draw and create. He was known for his sense of humor and enjoyment of life, and learned at an earlier age than most that the love of family and friends is what makes life worthwhile.

After more than three years of living with cancer, Matthew found peace when he died at home March 21, 2005.

He was extremely grateful to his family and friends and to Hospice for allowing him to be at home during his illness.

Matt is survived by his parents, Daniel and Ella Ladlee; a sister, Christine Arnold; his maternal grandparents, John Jr. and Deborah Bauer; maternal aunts and uncles, Ruth and James Scofield, John and Judy Bauer, Larry and Alyce Bauer, Dave and Chris Bauer, Cindy Bauer and Gerry Schaffner, Mary and Dan Johnson and Russell Bauer and Linda Perry; paternal aunts and uncles, Tom and Wendy Ladlee, Tammy and John Loftus, Richard Ladlee and Lisa Shaw, John Ladlee and Lynn Caston, Bruce and Sheilah Lancaster, Bonnie Hosier and Dave and Chris Butler; and numerous cousins.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Cyrus and Beulah Ladlee; and an uncle, Lee Bauer.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2005, at the United Ministry of Delhi with spiritual coordinator Allison Bookhout of Catskill Area Hospice officiating.

At Matthew’s request, there will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place in the spring at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions are asked to be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 116 Main St., Delhi NY 13753, in loving memory of Matthew Scott Ladlee.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Michael E. Cliche

ONEONTA — Michael Ernest Cliche, 54, of Oneonta passed away Sunday, March 20, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born July 3, 1950, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., the son of Dennis Cliche and Gertrude (Chouquette) Cliche Beddie.

He married Marilyn Trombley on Jan. 31, 1970, in Mineville.

Mike drove a truck for Agway until his illness forced him to stop. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed the sports of hunting, fishing and car racing. Known as "the jack of all trades," Mike was also a skilled carpenter and mechanic. He was a member of the NRA.

Mike was a loving and devoted father and was very fond of spending time with his family and friends. He was a friend to many and was always eager to lend a helping hand. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The family cannot adequately express their appreciation for the care by all Mike’s family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Cliche of Mineville; his loving son, Jeremy Cliche of Oneonta; his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Robert Cliche and his fiancee, Dorothy Whitcher, of St. Johnsbury, Vt., Philip and Gloria Cliche of Waterford, Vt., Diane (Cliche) Florence of St. Johnsbury, Vt., Brian Beddie of St. Johnsbury, Vt., Paul and Sandy Beddie of Bennington, Vt., Linda and Cliff Ozzidi-Ombe of Edison, N.J., and William Beddie of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Michael was predeceased by his son, Glenn Cliche; his father, Dennis Cliche; his mother, Gertrude Beddie; his stepfather, Richard Beddie; his brother, Jimmy Lawrence Beddie; and his mother-in-law, Elsie Trombley.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon Monday, March 28, 2005, in the Church of All Saints, Mineville.

Burial will be held in the spring in the St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Moriah.

Calling hours will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Monday in the Harland Funeral Home, 45 S. Main St., Port Henry.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 in loving memory of Michael Ernest Cliche.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta and Harland Funeral Home, Port Henry.

Thorman Nordberg

LAURENS — Thorman E. Nordberg, 94, of Laurens died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Hamden, N.D., the son of Gustav S. and Theodora M. (Soli) Nordberg.

He married Esther L. Pierce on Nov. 13, 1944. She survives him.

He attended Oak Grove High School in Fargo, N.D. In 1931, Thor, his father and brother, Ralph, drove to Oneonta to relocate the family, where Gustav was to teach philosophy and psychology at Hartwick College. Thor first graduated from Hartwick College, then the State University College at Oneonta, receiving certification in earth science education. He also completed graduate course work at Syracuse University and Cornell.

Thor taught general and earth sciences as well as math at Oneonta Junior High School from 1937 to 1973, and he always was thrilled to meet former students around town.

During the 1940-42 war years, Thor worked on the D&H Railroad. Never one to sit idle, Thor followed teaching with several years at Murdock Hardware, then assisted many years at the Soccer Hall of Fame, enjoying interaction with people from all over the world.

Thor was an active member of Atonement and then St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Laurens. He taught Sunday school and served on church councils. Having sung in college glee clubs, Dad loved to harmonize on Sunday hymns.

Thor was active in scouting, coached junior high tennis, helped maintain Wilber Park tennis courts and enjoyed evening tennis matches for years. He was also a member of AARP and the Retired Teacher’s Association.

Thor’s great joy was in family and friends. So many are proud recipients of stained glass or hooked rugs created with Dad’s own special TLC. We will miss Dad’s soft brown eyes, sweet smile and amazing bear hugs. Till we meet again, we love you forever, Dad, and thank you for everything.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Esther Nordberg of Laurens; his daughters and their spouses, Mrs. Federico (Margaret) Serra-Lima of Old Chatham, Mrs. Anthony (Thoranne) Winkler of Franklin, and Mrs. John (Barbara) Delaney of Vestal; two granddaughters, Marlys Delaney Hammond and Cass Young; great-grandchildren, Dakota Delaney Hammond, Madison Delaney Hammond, Casey Delaney Hammond and Erica Young; his brother, Stanley Nordberg of Sidney; three sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Bruce of Scotia, Mrs. Frank (Aleda) Souders of Oxford, and Mrs. Howard (Ethel) Beams of Sarasota, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

His brother, Ralph Nordberg, as well as two sisters, Helen Hansen and Marlys Nordberg, predeceased Thor.

A service to celebrate the life of Thorman E. Nordberg will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2005, in St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Laurens, with the Rev. Paul Messner, pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 97 Maple St., Laurens, NY 13796 or to the Laurens Emergency Squad, Laurens, NY 13796.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.
