Betty H. Lawton

OXFORD — Betty H. Lawton, 71, of Phetteplace Road, Oxford, passed away March 21, 2005, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born March 27, 1933, in North Norwich, the daughter of the late Harry and Belle (Moon) Hicks.

On May 3, 1953, in Calvary Episcopal Church, McDonough, she married Robert Lawton, who survives.

Besides her husband, Robert, she is survived by her children, Jim and April Lawton of Homer, Chuck and Ann Marie Lawton of Syracuse, David Lawton of Oxford, Carol and Dennis Fallon of Cape Coral, Fla., Dale and Susan Lawton of Norwich and Jerry and Kim Lawton of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Meghann Lawton, Jameson Lawton, Christopher Lawton, Erica Lawton, Nickole Lawton, Robert Lawton, Cabrarrah Lawton, Tylyn Lawton, Richelle Lawton, Michelle Fallon, Danielle Fallon, Dennis Fallon, Joshua Lawton and Kylie Lawton; and her great-grandchild, Jordan Fallon. She is also survived by her sisters and brothers, Rita and Jack Stith of Pitcher, Donna and Fred Parliman of Port Crane, Riley and Linda Yale of Georgetown, Ohio, and Sylvia and David Grover of Montrose, Pa.; her brother-in-law, George Daily of Oxford; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her sister, June Daily, and her brother, Stanley Yale, predeceased her.

Betty was a very devoted mother and grandmother, whose family always came first.

She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Oxford and had served on the Vestry. She was also active with the church dinners. She was a volunteer with the Community Clothes Closet in Oxford, and their winter home in Florida.

She was a former den mother for the Cub Scouts. She had helped her husband at Gilbert Lake State Park. She and Bob enjoyed square dancing. She had worked in the cafeteria of Laurens Central School.

Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2005, in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Oxford, with the Rev. Bruce MacDuffie officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Oxford.

Harold Pickens

MORRIS — Harold Pickens, 94, of Morris and most recently of the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

He was born in Morris on March 25, 1910, the son of Albert Pickens and May (Martin) Pickens.

He married Ava Johnson in 1931 in Morris. She died Nov. 9, 1999.

He had worked as a carpenter, plumber, electrician and heavy-equipment operator. He was a lifelong area resident and had served the Hillington Cemetery Association as a trustee for six years. He was also a member of the Heavy Equipment Operators Union No. 106 of Albany.

He is survived by his sister, Claudine Stafford of Morris; his stepson, Donald Johnson and wife Shirley of Fairport; as well as several stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

Calling hours will be held at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2005.

Cremation will be take place at the Hillington Crematory, and committal services and burial of Ava and Harold’s cremains will take place in May and will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Arnold E. Steele

MASONVILLE — Mr. Arnold E. Steele, 85, of Masonville passed away Sunday evening, March 20, 2005, at his residence.

He was born May 26, 1919, in Horton, the son of John B. and Edith P. (Shew) Steele.

He married the former Ethel Mae Foster on Aug. 30, 1942, in Sidney Center. Mrs. Steele passed away July 12, 2003.

Arnold operated A & E Repair in Masonville for more than 15 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a graduate of Roscoe High School, class of 1938. He was a member of the River Street Baptist Church in Oneonta, where he sang in the church choir and also served as a trustee and deacon. Arnold enjoyed reading, attending church and visiting the elderly in nursing homes.

Arnold is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Clifton R. and Marjorie Steele of Orlando, Fla., and Bryan A. and Cheryl Steele of Walton; one daughter and son-in-law, Edith R. and Raymond Baker of Geneva, Ohio; one brother, Reginald J. Steele of Roscoe; and two aunts, Constance Babcock of Colorado and Flavia Allen of Binghamton; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2005, at the River Street Baptist Church, River Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church of Oneonta, the Rev. Stephen Drake of Pittman, N.J., and the Rev. Wayne Muckel of Winfield, Pa., officiating.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla (directly off Exit 10 of I-88), from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2005, when the family will be present at the funeral home. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery, Walton.

It has been requested that memorial contributions be given to the River Street Baptist Church, 133 River St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Arnold E. Steele.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Arlene Smiley

CLIFTON PARK — Arlene (Freeman) Smiley, 73, of Clifton Park died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Schuyler Ridge in Clifton Park.

She is survived by her mother, Carrie Harris of Oneonta; two children; two brothers, Earl Freeman of Nevada and Frank Harris of Oneonta; three sisters, Sylvia Bonds of Florida, Thelma Olson of North Carolina and Judy Keator of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Charles (Sony) Freeman and Dennis Freeman.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the John J. Sanvidge Funeral Home Inc. in Lansingburgh.

Hilda Monasterio

MARGARETVILLE — Hilda E. Monasterio, 76, of Margaretville passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at her residence.

Hilda was born Nov. 18, 1928, in Cuba, the daughter of Cesareo Maya Lopez and Aquilina Gonzalez Diaz.

She married John J. Monasterio on May 20, 1959, in Yonkers. He died Nov. 7, 1971.

She was a homemaker and lived in Margaretville since 1972, moving from Brooklyn.

Hilda is survived by two daughters, Marie Lima of Orlando, Fla., and Loren Carr of Margaretville; one sister, Milagrow Lopez of Hialeah, Fla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with Bishop John A. Shay, pastor of the Sanctuary of Christ Church, Denver/Vega Road, Margaretville, officiating. Calling hours will be Friday night after the service until 9 p.m.

Committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Rosehill Cemetery, Linden, N.J.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Thelma P. Lally

SCHENECTADY — Thelma Perkins Lally of Ruffner Road passed away peacefully March 22, 2005, at her home.

She was born Nov. 16, 1912, in West Burlington, Otsego County, the daughter of Grover and Agatha Telfer Perkins.

Thelma was a graduate of Hartwick High School (1930) and Cobleskill Agriculture and Technical School. She received her teaching degree from the Oneonta Normal School. Thelma taught at the Patent School in the town of Burlington and the Waterville Central School.

She married Kenneth T. Lally on July 11, 1939. Thelma and Ken moved to Schenectady where Thelma taught at a "one-room" schoolhouse in Glenville, and in the Niskayuna School District. She was a dedicated teacher for more than 35 years and was greatly admired and respected by her colleagues and her students.

Thelma and Ken were very active throughout her life, supporting and providing leadership, service and financial support to many area educational and health-care institutions and community service organizations. A partial list of organizations that have benefited from Thelma and Ken’s interest and involvement include the Albany Catholic Diocese, Albany Medical Center, Catholic Central High School, College of St. Rose, Ellis Hospital, Girls Inc., Junior Museum of Troy, LaSalle School, Mohawk Pathways Girl Scouts, Northeast Parent and Child, Proctor’s Theatre, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Samaritan Hospital, Siena College, Schenectady County Community College, St. Clare’s Hospital, St. Helen’s Parish, Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital, Union College and the YMCA.

As a tribute to their longtime devotion to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, RPI named its graduate business school the Kenneth T. and Thelma P. Lally School of Management and Technology.

Thelma and her husband received the Philanthropists of the Year award for their support of charities in the Capital Region from the National Society of Fund-Raising Executives in 1994, and in 1999 they were honored with the Citizen Laureate Award from the University at Albany Foundation.

Thelma was recognized for her passion for education and teaching excellence by the College of St. Rose, which conferred upon her the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in 1999. In recognition of Thelma’s support of the college and funding provided by she and Ken, St. Rose named its new signature building the Thelma P. Lally School of Education in 2003. Thelma also served as an officer, director and trustee of numerous other educational and community organizations.

Mrs. Lally is survived by her devoted husband of more than 65 years, Kenneth T. Lally; her sister, Diana Marlette; a sister-in-law, Mary Lally; her brothers-in-law and their wives, John and Dorothy Lally and Robert and Colleen Lally; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Hilda Tamas; sister-in-law, Helen Fischer; and three brothers-in-law, Joseph Tamas, Howard Marlette and Howard Lally.

Mrs. Lally’s family is very grateful to the nurses who have provided such loving care to Thelma for the past several years.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church on Union Street in Schenectady at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2005.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 28, at the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St., at McClellan Street, Schenectady.

Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Waterville at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to any of the institutions and organizations that Thelma supported.

Marian L. Grimm

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Marian L. Grimm of Jaipur Lane died Monday, March 21, 2005, at Saratoga Hospital. She was 64.

Born Jan. 19, 1941, in Cooperstown, she was a daughter of the late Donald F. and Helen (Meteunas) Butler.

She was a graduate of Cooperstown High School and New York State Teacher’s College at Oneonta. She received her master’s degree in education from SUNY Albany and was a retired first-grade teacher in the Shenendehowa School District. Actively involved in education programs at Skidmore College, she was a member of several area reading associations and was founder of the Charlotte Award Program to recognize excellence in children’s literature.

She was a prolific author of children’s literature awaiting publication.

Survivors include her daughter, Katherine Fountain of Cobleskill; one son, Capt. Richard R. Grimm, USMC, and his wife, Krista Grimm, currently stationed in Okinawa; four grandchildren, Christopher Kemp, Hillary Greene and Ryan and Samuel Grimm; three sisters, Frances Hazelton of Richfield Springs, Lisa Ellsworth of Geneva and Rita Bach of Canandaigua; two brothers, John Butler of North Carolina and Mark Butler of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2005, in the Presbyterian New England Congregational Church, 24 Circular St.

Burial will be held later in the spring in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery, Fly Creek.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, (518) 584-5373.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 27 Woodlawn Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

Mark S. Lowe

WALTON — Mark S. Lowe, 57, of Walton passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 6, 1947, in Greene, the son of George H. and Mildred (Hurlbut) Lowe.

He married Joanne O’Kelly on Sept. 25, 1993, in Smithville Flats.

Mark was retired from the United States Navy where he served from 1966 to 1987.

He was a member of the Walton American Legion and the VFW in Lakehurst, N.J. He was a former member of the Hamden Hill Ridge Rider Snowmobile Club and the NRA.

Mark enjoyed hunting, woodworking, playing cards and shooting pool.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne M. Lowe of Walton; his mother, Mildred Lowe of Greene; his children, Catherine (Mark) Fallon of Stamford, Charla Brown and her fiance, Lloyd Merrill Jr., of Walton, and Tanya Rockdale of San Diego, Calif.; five grandchildren, Sarah Fairchild, Timothy Fairchild, Robert Merrill, Jacob Merrill and Tyler Fallon; two brothers, David (Cindy) Lowe of Payson, Ariz., and George (Karen) Lowe of Greene; and his mother-in-law, Dorothy O’ Kelly of Oneonta.

A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2005, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Elliott Oakes officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until time of service when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Wayne J. Jones

HOBART — Wayne James Jones, 89, formerly of the Kortright area, passed away Monday, March 14, 2005, in Lehigh Acres, Fla.

He was born Oct. 31, 1915, in Kortright, the son of Charles A. and Martha (McClanahan) Jones.

Mr. Jones made his home in LaBelle, Fla., for 27 years. Previously, he lived in Kortright and worked for New York state and Delaware County over the years in weights and measures. In the late 1950s he served as president of the Kortright Fire Insurance Cooperative.

He was a veteran of the United States Army/Air Force, a member of the Elks and American Legion for 57 years and was a past master of St. Andrews Masonic Lodge, formerly of Hobart.

A niece, Marion Hoagland of Grand Gorge; two nephews, Ralph C. Jones Jr. of LaBelle, Fla., and Donald C. Jones of Lake Toxaway, N.C.; and several great-nieces and -nephews survive him.

One sister, Mildred Dayton; brothers, Linn Jones, Ralph C. Jones Sr. and Paul H. Jones; and a niece, Bette Hesse, predeceased him.

Services in Davenport Cemetery, Davenport, will be announced later.

Local arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Florence Browning

UNADILLA — Florence M. Browning, 81, of Unadilla passed away at home Wednesday, March 23, 2005.

Mrs. Browning was born in Montreal, Canada, on Feb. 8, 1924, the daughter of Ernest and Olive (Bassett) Maynard.

Her early childhood was spent in Montreal and New York City, where she graduated from high school.

On April 22, 1944, in New York City, she married Reginald A. Browning. Together, they shared more than 50 years of marriage.

Mrs. Browning retired as a buyer from Bendix in 1985. She also devoted much of her spare time to the First United Methodist Church of Unadilla and to the Unadilla Fire Department Auxiliary.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Richard Barnes of Unadilla; her son and daughter-in-law, James and Donna Browning of Mount Upton; her sister, Barbara Palmer; her brother, Richard Van Brackle; her grandchildren, Chad and Richard Barnes, Germaine Rodda and Gwendolyn Grow; her great-grandchildren, Joseph, Alexandria, Timothy, Justin, Don, Sean and Nicole; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Browning was predeceased by her husband, Reginald A. Browning, in 1985, and her sister, Christine Provost.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Organ Fund of the First United Methodist Church, 654 Main St., Unadilla.

The family of Florence Browning especially thanks the Bassett Health Dialysis Unit in Oneonta, Dr. Riaz A. Lone and the nursing staff at The Hospital, Sidney, and Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Visitation will he from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 25, at the Joyce Funeral Home Inc., 179 Main St., Unadilla.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 26, at the First United Methodist Church, 654 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. Kip Stratton officiating.

Spring interment will take place in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Funeral arrangements are by the Joyce Funeral Home Inc. of Unadilla.

Catherine Ruppert

HOBART — Catherine Margaret Ruppert, 88, of Hobart passed quietly at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta on Wednesday, March 23, 2005.

Born Feb. 5, 1917, to Peter and Mary (Larkin) Murphy, "Kate" was the seventh of nine children.

Catherine attended Mount St. Ursula’s Academy for Young Ladies and college with the Convent of the Carmelite Sisters. She moved from the Bronx to New Jersey in 1952. She moved to Hobart in 1969.

Catherine was a devoted wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend. She was a devout member of the Roman Catholic Church, with a deep faith in God that held her steady through adversity. She was also a wonderful homemaker, an avid gardener, superb cook and an excellent landscape oil painter. Providing love and nurturance to all who were in her company, Catherine understood the power of being kind to one another.

Catherine is survived by four sons, Eugene Tuite of Glen Rock, N.J., Robert Ruppert of Windham, Gerard Ruppert of Menands, Kieran Ruppert of Frazier Park, Calif.; and two daughters, Judith Plum of Victor and Catherine (Katy) Barber of Stamford. Catherine was also blessed with 16 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Catherine was predeceased by her husband, Robert Ruppert, who passed in May 1966; seven brothers; a sister; and her son, Peter, who passed in July 2003.

Mrs. Ruppert spent the last several years in comfort at the Hearthstone Adult Home in Hobart. She will be greatly missed.

The family will not host calling hours, but rather invites attendance at a memorial Mass, which will be held in Catherine’s name at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stamford at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in memory of Catherine be made to the Stamford Village Library, 117 Main St., Stamford, NY 12167.

Gladys V. Baker

ONEONTA — Gladys V. Baker, 87, of Oneonta passed away Friday, March 25, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, where she had resided for the last nine years.

She was born May 1, 1917, in Walton, the daughter of Benjamin H. and Anna (Dibble) Jones.

She married Paul Baker on Nov. 7, 1934, in Oneonta. Mr. Baker predeceased her Sept. 25, 1977.

Gladys and Paul lived on the Otsdawa and ran a dairy farm for 20 years before moving to West Laurens. She then operated Baker’s Trailer Park until going into the nursing home in 1996. While living in the nursing home, Gladys made many friends with the staff and the residents and enjoyed sitting and talking with them.

She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Marian Irene and Paul Thayer of Owego, Virginia and Ken Crosby of Laurens and Helen and Wayne King of Holly; her seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Gladys was predeceased by her daughter, Clara Crosby.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 28, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Thompson, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Schenevus, officiating. A calling hour will precede the funeral.

Burial will be later in the Elm Row Cemetery, Laurens.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.
