Joseph A. Koshar

UTICA — Joseph A. Koshar, 80, of Utica died March 24, 2005, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

He was born July 13, 1924, in Adrian, W.Va., the son of Slovenian immigrants Anton and Johanna Royce Koshar. He grew up on the family farm on Christian Hill in Fly Creek.

He married Mary Krish on Aug. 2, 1952, in Richfield Springs.

Joseph retired from Chicago Pneumatic as a cutter grinder in 1986 after 30 years of service.

He was a member of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes and the Little Falls Slovenian Club.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Bill Pickles of Utica; two sons, Andrew Koshar of N. Kingstown, R.I., and John Koshar and his wife, Colleen, of N. Kingstown, R.I.; three grandchildren, William, Mary and Frances Pickles of Utica; one sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Sebastian Paciocco of Binghamton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Olga Koshar of Cooperstown and Ed and Betty Koshar of Fly Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Janes of Fly Creek and an infant sister; and one brother, Anthony Koshar, who was killed in combat during World War II on Enewetak Island in the Marshall Islands.

The family extends many thanks to the doctors and staff at the Vascular Institute at Albany Medical Center for the professional care.

The funeral will be at 10:15 a.m. Monday at the Friedel, Williams, Coriale & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford, and at 11 a.m. at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. Calling hours are Saturday (today) from 2 to 5 p.m.

Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

In memory of Joseph, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Ronald McDonald House, 139 So. Lake Ave., Albany, NY 12208.

John T. Harvard

POTTSTOWN, Pa. — The Rev. Dr. John T. Harvard passed away of cancer March 27, 2005, at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center.

John was born June 20, 1947, in Cooperstown to J. Keith Harvard and Elizabeth Tyler Harvard.

He was raised in the northern Catskill Mountains and attended elementary and high school at Andes Central School. John was a foreign exchange student, a National Honor Society member and obtained a varsity letter in four sports.

From 1965-1969, John attended Harvard College in Cambridge, Mass., where he graduated cum laude in Romance languages and literatures. He taught Spanish at the Governor Dummer Academy in Byfield, Mass., for two years, and began attending Gordon-Conwell Seminary part-time. He continued his teaching career by teaching middle school French and Spanish for the Gloucester (Mass.) Public Schools. During his five years there, John became confirmed in the Episcopal Church and married Susan Dix Buehler in 1977.

They were then to become the first missionaries for the South American Missionary Society of the Episcopal Church. After training in England for a brief time, John and Susan served in the cities of Lima and Arequipa, Peru, from 1979 to 1986.

Their daughter, Tessa, was born there in 1980 and their son, William, followed in 1982 during their furlough time in the States. John was ordained vicar of the parish of Cristo de Redentor in Arequipa, Peru, in 1983.

After returning to the U.S. permanently, John completed a master’s of divinity at General Seminary in New York City in 1987. He was called to be rector of St. Thomas Parish in Morgantown, Pa. He served in that parish for 10 years before considering a position as chaplain at The Hill School in Pottstown. John took this position in 1997, and has ministered as a theology instructor, pastor, counselor, dorm parent and coach. During this time, in 1998, John completed a doctor of ministry degree with a specialization in marriage and family at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.

John served one year with Innovative Counseling in Pottstown, and had also served, until his recent illness, as an associate rector at St. Gabriel’s in Douglassville.

John is survived by his wife, Susan; daughter, Tessa Harvard, of Danvers, Mass.; son, William Harvard, of Sewanee University, Tenn.; a sister, Mrs. Mary K. Humphreys of Herndon, Va.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, 1188 Ben Franklin Highway East, Douglassville, Pa. The Right Rev. Paul V. Marshall and the Rev. Canon Calvin C. Adams will officiate. A calling time will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hill School, in memory of the Rev. Dr. John T. Harvard, care of Mr. James A. Gundy III, 717 E. High St., Pottstown, PA 19464.

Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are being handled by the Houck & Gofus Funeral Home Inc. of Pottstown, Pa.

Joan C. Chester

GILBERTSVILLE — Joan Catherine Chester, 70, of Gilbertsville and formerly of Hamilton, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born in St. Johnsville on April 4, 1934, the daughter of Ivan D. Walrath and Frances (Robinson) Walrath.

She married Albert B. Chester on Nov. 19, 1962, in Blacksburg, Va. He died Dec. 12, 1983.

She was a home economics teacher at Brookfield Central School and later worked in the cafeteria at the Hamilton Central School. She most recently was employed by the state, working with retarded adults in the Hamilton area until her retirement in 1999.

She enjoyed traveling, reading, visiting the ocean and loved people and especially her family.

She was a member of the Hamilton First Baptist Church and was very instrumental in creating the nursery program. She was most recently active in the Gilbertsville Baptist Church.

She is survived by her mother, Frances Walrath, of St. Johnsville; her children, Charles Chester and his wife, Ivania, of Mobile, Ala., and Laura Palada and her husband, Randolph, of Gilbertsville; her grandchildren, Khaya and Elaina Palada and Isabella Chester. She is also survived by her siblings, Nancy Walrath of Syracuse, Vicki Garrett of Chittenango, Byron Walrath of St. Johnsville, Emma Jane Blair of Chittenango; and her many special friends at Grace Christian Church.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at the Gilbertsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Randolph Palada officiating.

There will be no calling hours, and her final resting place will be in Noank, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate the Gilbertsville Baptist Church, PO Box 216, Gilbertsville, NY 13776 or the Grace Christian Church, St. Johnsville, NY 13452 in her memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Michael A. Cole

HOBART — Michael A. Cole, 60, of Hobart passed away Friday, March 25, 2005, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born Jan. 15, 1945, in Stamford, the son of Ivan A. and Barbara H. (Leman) Cole Sr.

Mike attended South Kortright Central School, and he never married. He worked on the family farm and for the town of Stamford Highway Department.

He looked forward to hunting and fishing and especially trips to Canada. Another favorite pastime of his was putting together large jigsaw puzzles.

Michael looked forward to family gatherings and welcoming his brothers and sisters home; he enjoyed people. He considered his Countryside family his second family and enjoyed them all.

He is survived by his mother, Barbara Simmons, and stepfather, Everett Simmons, of Hobart; a brother, David, and his wife, Karen, Cole of Amsterdam; two sisters, Susan and her husband, Tom, O’Brien of Webster, and Sally and her husband, Kuziwa, Chanaiwa of California; and many nieces and nephews.

His father, Ivan, predeceased him in 1993, and a brother, Andrew, in 1991.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2005, in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Hobart, with the Rev. Nancy Truscott, deacon, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place at a later date in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Countryside Care Activity Fund, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Erna Vollweiler

MERIDALE — Erna Vollweiler, 82, of Meridale passed quietly at the Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca on Sunday, March 27, 2005.

She was born March 3, 1923, to Emil and Martha (Stern) Dreyfus, in Bruchsal, Germany.

Erna spent her youth in Germany until Kristalnacht, after which she first traveled to England via the Kindertransport and then made her way to the United States by way of Canada.

During those times, she worked as a nanny, cook and eventually as a sewing machine operator in New York City.

Erna married Walter Vollweiler in January 1948, and the two moved to Meridale where they raised a family and built a cattle-dealing business, which continued up until Walter’s sudden death in 1975.

Erna is survived by her brother, Jack, of Teaneck, N.J.; two daughters, Eleanore of Dryden and Dorothy (Howard) Proskin of Rochester; one grandson, Martin Proskin; and by several nieces and nephews.

Erna was predeceased by her husband, Walter Vollweiler, who passed in September 1975.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2005, in the Temple Beth El Cemetery, Emmons, with Rabbi Donald Neil Roberts officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in memory of Erna be made to the Meridale Fire Department, Meridale, NY 13806 or to Temple Beth El, 83 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Catherine Ruppert

HOBART — Catherine Margaret Ruppert, 88, of Hobart passed quietly at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta on Wednesday, March 23, 2005.

Born Feb. 5, 1917, to Peter and Mary (Larkin) Murphy, "Kate" was the seventh of nine children.

Catherine attended Mount St. Ursula’s Academy for Young Ladies and college with the Convent of the Carmelite Sisters. She moved from the Bronx to New Jersey in 1952 and to Hobart in 1969.

Catherine was a devoted wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend. She was a devout member of the Roman Catholic Church, with a deep faith in God that held her steady through adversity. She was also a wonderful homemaker, an avid gardener, superb cook and an excellent landscape oil painter. Providing love and nurturing to all who were in her company, Catherine understood the power of being kind to one another.

Catherine is survived by four sons, Eugene Tuite of Glen Rock, N.J.; Robert Ruppert of Windham, Gerard Ruppert of Menands, Kieran Ruppert of Frazier Park, Calif.; and two daughters, Judith Plum of Victor and Catherine (Katy) Barber of Stamford. Catherine was also blessed with 16 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Catherine was predeceased by her husband, Robert Ruppert, who passed in May 1966, seven brothers, a sister, and her son, Peter, who passed in July 2003.

Mrs. Ruppert spent the last several years in comfort at the Hearthstone Adult Home in Hobart. She will be greatly missed.

The family will not have calling hours, but rather invites attendance at a memorial Mass, which will be held in Catherine’s name at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stamford at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations, in memory of Catherine, be made to the Stamford Village Library 117 Main St., Stamford, NY 12167.

Gladys V. Baker

ONEONTA — Gladys V. Baker, 87, of Oneonta passed away Friday, March 25, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, where she had resided for the last nine years.

She was born May 1, 1917, in Walton, the daughter of Benjamin H. and Anna (Dibble) Jones.

She married Paul Baker on Nov. 7, 1934, in Oneonta. Mr. Baker predeceased her Sept. 25, 1977.

Gladys and Paul lived on the Otsdawa and ran a dairy farm for 20 years before moving to West Laurens. She then operated Baker’s Trailer Park until going into the nursing home in 1996. While living in the nursing home, Gladys made many friends with the staff and the residents and enjoyed sitting and talking with them.

She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Marian Irene and Paul Thayer of Owego, Virginia and Ken Crosby of Laurens and Helen and Wayne King of Holly; her seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Gladys was predeceased by her daughter, Clara Crosby.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, March 28, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Thompson, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Schenevus, officiating. A calling hour will precede the funeral.

Burial will be later in the Elm Row Cemetery, Laurens.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

C. Adele Judkins

BROCTON — Mrs. C. Adele Judkins (Burgess), 95, of Burr Road, Brocton, formerly of Bradford and Rew, Pa., passed away Thursday, March 24, 2005, at home with her family at her side.

She was born July 6, 1909, in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Franklin Burgess and Anna Louise (Heimerle) Burgess.

She married Harry B. Judkins. He predeceased her Dec. 18, 2004.

Adele is survived by her daughter, Ruth Anne Delcamp of Brocton; many grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her father, Franklin Burgess; her mother, Anna Louise (Heimerle) Burgess; and her son, James David Judkins.

Adele was a resident of the Brocton/Portland area since 1985, when she and her late husband moved here from Bradford, Pa., to be closer to their daughter. While in the Bradford area, she had been a charter member of the Rew, Pennsylvania, Volunteer Fire Department and had been active in the Order of the Eastern Star of Rew.

She had been employed by Spear Resistor Corporation of Bradford as a Quality Control Inspector. She assisted her late husband Harry with his trapping business.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and her involvement with the Brocton/Portland Senior Citizens Group.

There will be no calling hours. Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Chautauqua County, 4840 West Lake Road, Mayville NY 14757.

Rose M. Cartwright

MARGARETVILLE — Rose M. Cartwright, 58, of Walker Road, Denver Vega Valley, passed away at home Sunday, March 27, 2005, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Rose was born in Margaretville on Sept. 20, 1946, the daughter of Jennie Day Dougherty and the late Oscar Dougherty.

Rose was very much a part of many people’s lives. She left a lasting impression and was loved by all. Rose enjoyed spending her spare time with her friends and family; her grandsons, Danny Bird and Marshall Leal, were her pride and joy.

Rose worked as a waitress in the Oneonta area. Later she was employed at the Country Stores in Arkville and Margaretville. She was also a sales representative for Avon products.

In October 2004, she married her beloved husband, Steve Cartwright.

Other survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Carrie Bird; daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Edward Leal; and daughter and son-in-law, Amber and Dale Davis and a soon-to-be grandchild; mother, Jennie Dougherty; brother, Allen Dougherty; sister, Barbara Miller; and nephews, Nick and Dylan Dougherty and Brian Miller.

She was predeceased by a brother, Doug "Bub" Dougherty; a nephew, Nathan Dougherty; and her late husband, Danny Marshall.

The family of Rose would especially like to thank the Delaware County Area Hospice of Delhi. Maddy, Libby, Peg and staff, you are all truly special people.

Please send all donations to the Catskill Area Hospice, Delhi.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2005.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Chester Shew officiating.

Burial will be held later at New Kingston Cemetery, New Kingston.

Catherine Ruppert

HOBART — Catherine Margaret Ruppert, 88, of Hobart passed quietly at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta on Wednesday, March 23, 2005.

Mrs. Ruppert spent the last several years in comfort at the Hearthstone Adult Home in Hobart. She will be greatly missed.

The family will not play host to calling hours but rather invites attendance at a memorial Mass, which will be held in Catherine’s name at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stamford at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in memory of Catherine be made to the Stamford Village Library, 117 Main St., Stamford, NY 12167.

Norman R. Foote

OTEGO — Norman R. Foote, 80, of Otego and a former longtime Franklin resident died Monday, March 28, 2005, at his residence in Otego.

He was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Guilford, the son of Ralph and Mabel (Church) Foote.

He married Elizabeth Moores on Oct. 17, 1983. Before that he was married to Patricia Coulter, who died in 1978.

For many years, Norm was employed at ECD Bendix, where he worked in the experimental department as an expediter.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II.

Norm was very active in the Franklin community, where he served as treasurer for the local Boy Scout Troop for more than 50 years, as well as being a village trustee and the village mayor.

He was always willing to offer a helping hand, and over the years cared for many foster children.

He was a life member of the Masons and was a former member of the Franklin American Legion, where he served as commander.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Foote of Otego; his children, Eric (Lynn) Foote of Pearl River and Dennis Foote of Otego, Robert "Bobby" Foote; and his stepsons, Gary (Karen) Lynch of Pennsylvania and Edward (Michelle) Lynch of Maryland. He is also survived by many grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2005, in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, with Allison Jay Bookhout, spiritual care coordinator for Catskill Area Hospice, officiating.

Burial will be later in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Drive, Department FH, Oneonta, NY 13820-1319 or the Guilford Historical Society, PO Box 201, Guilford, NY 13780.
