Julia L. Yager

MILFORD — Julia L. Yager, 86, a lifelong resident of the Milford area, died Sunday, March 27, 2005, at her home on county Route 35.

She was born Jan. 25, 1919, in Milford, the daughter of Earl and Jenny Griswold. She graduated from Milford Central School in the class of 1938.

In 1942, she married Thurman L. Yager, another Milford native. Julia was employed for more than 36 years in banking, first by the Milford National Bank and thereafter by its successor, Wilber National Bank, as the manager of its Milford branch.

Julia believed that no matter what happens, one must always keep their faith, and she lived her life knowing that true happiness comes from within.

She was a lifelong member of the Milford United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Milk Producers, Dairylea and the Community Craft Club.

Julia loved people and treasured her many friendships. One reason she loved attending lawn sales, traveling (especially to South Carolina, Maine and Canada), selling her garden produce, working on arts-and-crafts projects and shopping (Big Lot stores being a favorite) was that it enabled her to meet and talk with people.

She was very outgoing and loved doing things for others. She was an excellent cook and took great pleasure in preparing meals for her family and friends. Julia’s greatest pleasure came from her family and close friends. To her grandchildren she was their beloved "Nana." Her favorite saying, "I love you to pieces," was heartfelt and spoken often to each and every member of her family and also to those special friends and neighbors she simply "considered" to be her family.

One of these "adopted" family members, Taylor Schluep, a young man she enjoyed and cared for, held a special place in her heart. To Taylor she was known affectionately as "Nanny."

Her warm and caring nature was with her to the end, and she welcomed, appreciated and enjoyed the friendship and loving care she received from her caregivers, Catherine, Marilyn, Susan S., Greg, Suzie, Maria, Carol and Deb.

Julia was predeceased by her husband, Thurman, in 1997.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy, and son-in-law, Henry Krol, of Milford; and her three much-loved grandchildren, Michael, Krista Lynn and Jay. She also leaves surviving her brother-in-law, Robert Yager; and her extended family, Brundage, Mills and Bliss; as well as her special friends, Louise Dutcher, Alice Loomis, and the Liddle, Schluep, Lyon, Seeley, Abrams, Adams, Trepes and Krol families.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at the Milford United Methodist Church in Milford, with the Rev. Rob Kazinski, the pastor of the church, officiating.

Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2005, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home on Route 28 in Milford.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those who so desire make memorial contributions to the Upstate Home for Children, 2705 State Highway 28, Oneonta, NY 13820 in Julia’s memory.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Born May 5, 1924, Fran was the daughter of Howard and Maude (Foote) Wigham, and sister to Paul Wigham.

She grew up on the family farm beside Ouleout Creek and was a graduate of Franklin High School and SUNY Cortland.

Fran taught physical education in Sauquoit, prior to marrying Fay Welch, a professor at Syracuse Forestry College, and settling in the countryside near Erieville.

Eriewood remained her home for nearly 50 years. During that time she raised two sons, Jim and Tad, and shared with her husband the directorship of Tanager Lodge, an Adirondack wilderness summer camp for children.

Known as "Wiggie" to her camp friends, she had a lifetime love of the outdoors and roamed the Franklin hills on horseback as a girl. She later became an avid hiker, skier, canoeist, swimmer and mountain climber. Her knowledge of the natural world was extensive. Birds, wildflowers, trees and wildlife were known to her by name and cared for like close friends.

Forest animals often appeared on her doorstep, seeking the kindness of a kindred spirit. Fran also had numerous dogs and cats as pets throughout her life.

She is survived by her son, Tad Welch of Merrill and Greensboro, N.C.; and her sister-in-law, Pearl Wigham.

Fran was predeceased by her husband, Fay, in 1984, and her son, Jim.

Strong-willed, intelligent, sharply funny, independent, loving, and forthright — these are among the qualities that will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved Fran.

James R. Johnson

CORTLAND — James Russell Johnson, 71, of Cortland died peacefully early Thursday morning, March 31, 2005, surrounded by his family at his home.

Jim was born Nov. 12, 1933, in Love, Ky., a son of Ira and Elphia (Embry) Johnson.

He married Mary-Lou Willis on Oct. 12, 1992, on Seneca Lake.

Raised in Kentucky, he attended school in Butler County. He entered the United States Air Force on Dec. 19, 1950, and served his country during the Korean War. During this time he received his GED and played on the Air Force basketball team.

Upon receiving his honorable discharge in 1954, he became involved in sales with various companies, including International Harvester and several automobile dealerships. The majority of his career in sales, though, was spent with Encyclopedia Britannica as a sales representative and later as a district manager. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Mary-Lou.

Jim and Mary-Lou have made their home in Cortland since 1992, and throughout the years have also lived in California, Cooperstown and Ithaca.

Essentially a self-educated man, Jim received much of his knowledge through a love of books and a voracious reading habit. He possessed a tremendous sense of humor, dry and comedic, which remained with him right up until his death.

He was a member of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown and the Dryden Veterans Memorial American Legion Post No. 1134.

The most prominent and important part of Jim’s life, though, was his steadfast devotion to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He enjoyed studying the Word of God and his teachings, as found in the Bible, and encouraged others to do so as well. In 1996, he was baptized into Christ by the Finger Lakes Church of Christ, of which he was a devoted member. Jim was a source of great spiritual support and reassurance for his wife, Mary-Lou, and many others whose lives he touched.

Jim is survived by his wife of 12 years, Mary-Lou of Cortland; his mother, Mrs. Elphia Blair of Fenton, Mo.; two daughters, P. Suzanne Hogan and her husband, Michael, of Potomac Falls, Va., and Sheri L. Aws of Fort Myers, Fla.; one son, Joseph Allen Johnson of Dunbar, Ky.; five grandchildren, Cassidy Ann Aws, Michael Anne Hogan, Jack Colby Hogan, Kristyn Ciara Johnson and Brenden Johnson; three sisters, Jacqueline Craft of Crystal City, Mo., Judy Blair-Moore and her husband, John, of St. Louis, Mo., and Kay Francis Guerin and her husband, Mark, of Fenton, Mo.; two brothers, Edward Blair and his wife, Carolyn, of Park Hills, Mo., and Mark Embry Blair of Illinois; many nieces and nephews; and three stepsons, Jim, Richard and Peter Vineyard and their families.

A memorial service will be held at noon Sunday, April 3, 2005, at the Finger Lakes Church of Christ, located in the chapel on the grounds of the George Junior Republic in Freeville with Arthur Barry, minister, officiating.

Later this spring, a graveside service with military honors will be conducted in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Finger Lakes Church of Christ, PO Box 4917, Ithaca, NY 14852.
