Gladys M. Florio

DAVENPORT — Gladys M. Florio, 81, passed away at her home in Davenport on Saturday, March 26, 2005.

Mrs. Florio was born Gladys Marie Jackson in Goodman, Mo., on Feb. 16, 1924.

She married Gaetano "Tom" Florio on July 3, 1943.

Mrs. Florio worked for the Foundation for Christian Living in Pawling for 20 years, retiring in 1983.

Mrs. Florio was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband of Davenport; a daughter, Beverly, and son-in-law, Michael Noland, of Clarksville, Tenn.; a son, Thomas, and daughter-in-law, Debbie Florio, of Pawling; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., Oneonta.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Audrey C. Bailey

OTEGO — Audrey C. Bailey, 67, passed away unexpectedly Friday, April 1, 2005, at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born May 13, 1937, in Otego, the daughter of Larry and Zelma (Davis) Sampson.

Audrey married Harold I. Bailey on Oct. 17, 1956, in Oneonta. She was employed as a bus driver for Oneonta Public Transit and then for Head Start in Oneonta, from which she recently retired. Audrey loved to knit, and for many years knitted mittens for her kids at Head Start, totaling 100 mittens each year.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Bailey of Otego; her children, Liz and her husband, John Shazer, of Unadilla, Mary Finch and her fiance, William "Jake" Jacobsen, of Cobleskill, and Larry and his wife, Tammy Bailey, of Otego; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Juanita Young of Otego; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Maynard Sampson.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 4, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 5, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Evelyn Lintern of the Sidney Center United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will be in the Ostdawa Cemetery in Otego.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Anna M. Vaughn

EAST WORCESTER — Anna M. Vaughn, 77, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2005, at Albany Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 10, 1927, in Worcester, the daughter of James and Mary (Anzelc) Milavec.

Anna married Kenneth Vaughn on Feb. 15, 1947, in Worcester. He predeceased her in 1992.

She was a retired seamstress and caregiver and was a lifelong Worcester-area resident.

Anna was a member of the St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Worcester and secretary of the local chapter of SNJP.

She is survived by two daughters, Vicki Livingston and Lenny Cole, both of Clearwater, Fla.; two grandchildren, Teare Korbul of Grand Gorge and Kenneth Cole of Oldsmar, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Kenneth J. Cole and Rowan Anna Korbul; one sister, Mary Bobnick of Worcester; three sisters-in-law, Mary Milavec, Helen Golja and Joan Milavec; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters.

Anna’s family will receive friends and relatives from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at her home at 100 Main St., East Worcester.

The family requests no flowers.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Gerald E. Sutton

JEFFERSON — A graveside memorial service will be held this spring in the Evergreen Cemetery in Jefferson for Gerald E. Sutton, 83, who passed away Saturday, March 27, 2005.

Helen M. Hunt

JEFFERSON — Helen M. Hunt, 93, of Jefferson passed away Thursday, March 24, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born in New York City on Sept. 11, 1911, and married Howard Hunt on April 4, 1952. He predeceased her Aug. 20, 1990.

Originally from North Babylon, they moved to Jefferson in 1974.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church and Jefferson Senior Citizens.

Helen worked as a chief telephone operator at Hampshire House and was assistant manager for Macy’s domestics department, both in New York City.

A wonderful lady who will never be forgotten, Helen was well-loved by many, including the Cioccari families and the Garrison, Armitage and Purce families.

Her sister, Isabel Gillespie, survives in Warwick, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Loretta Peters of San Bernardino, Calif.

It was Helen’s wish to have a simple memorial graveside service. This will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 9, in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Pershing R. Dickinson

COOPERSTOWN — Pershing R. Dickinson, a devoted family man and an active member of area church, music and Masonic organizations, died late Thursday afternoon, March 31, 2005, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, with his family by his side. He was 86 years old.

Pershing was born Aug. 1, 1918, in Akron, a son of Herbert M. and Ada M. (Fisher) Dickinson.

Raised in Akron, he graduated from Akron High School and then attended Fredonia State Teachers College and the Eastman School of Music. Upon receiving his master’s degree in music education from Fredonia, he entered the United States Army in July of 1941. He served with the 390th Army Service Forces Band, playing the trombone and baritone, and performed as an actor in various Army shows, including a special performance for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

During his military service, Persh married Mary June Klein on June 27, 1943, in the West End Presbyterian Church in New York City.

Upon receiving his honorable discharge from the Army on Oct. 13, 1945, Persh and Mary moved to Cooperstown when he accepted a teaching position with the Cooperstown School. For more than 30 years he was the instrumental music teacher and concert and marching band director for the Cooperstown Junior and Senior High School.

At one time Persh and Mary were members of the West End Presbyterian Church in New York City, where he served as an assistant usher in the church balcony during the services. After moving to Cooperstown they joined the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as choir director for 10 years. In 1959, they became members of the Cooperstown Methodist Church, where Persh served as choir director for 10 years and lay leader for 15 years.

Throughout his years in Cooperstown, Persh was active in many local organizations. At one time he served as the director of the Cooperstown Community Band and the Cooperstown Men’s Chorus. He was also a member of the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 and served as commander in 1950. Just last year, he was honored by this post for his many years of membership and service.

Holding first place in his life were the ties of his family, followed closely by his bonds with the Masonic Fraternity. He was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on Dec. 7, 1948, in Otsego Lodge No. 138, Free and Accepted Masons and served as Worshipful Master of the Lodge in 1960 and 1969. Since 1989, he served as Lodge Lecturer and, through his regular attendance, was a source of knowledge, guidance and support for his fellow brothers. Active in district and state affairs, he was first appointed by Right Worshipful Howard Potts, Grand Lecturer of the state of New York, as Assistant Grand Lecturer of the Otsego Schoharie Masonic District in 1976 and served in that capacity until 1979. Then, in 1980, he was appointed by Most Worshipful Bruce Widger, Grand Master, to the position of Grand Director of Ceremonies of the Grand Lodge of the State of New York. He was honored by the Brothers of Otsego Lodge No. 138, F & AM for his 55 years of membership and his service to the fraternity.

Throughout the years, Persh was also active in several Masonic concordant bodies. A member of Otsego Chapter No. 26, Royal Arch Masons, he served as its High Priest in 1975, 1977, 1978 and 1979 and in 1987 was appointed Grand Representative of the State of Delaware, near the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of the State of New York. He was also a member of Otsego Commandery No. 76, Knights Templar and served as Commander for three terms. A member of Otsego-Hartwick-Ar-butus Chapter No. 201, Order of the Eastern Star, he served as Patron for 18 years and in 1976 was appointed as District Grand Lecturer of the Otsego-Scho-harie District, Order of the Eastern Star.

Persh is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary June of Cooperstown; one daughter, Nancy J. Francis and her husband, Rodger, of Penn Yan; one daughter-in-law, Suzanne J. Dickinson of Colonie; grandchildren, Jeffrey Francis and his wife, Katie, of Lithia, Fla., Rhonda Simonelli and her husband, Michael, of Greece, Kimberly Aceti and her husband, Sam, of Grand Island and Michael Dickinson of Ballston Spa; two great-grandsons, Patrick Francis and Luke Simonelli; one great-granddaughter, Melina Aceti; one brother, Kenneth Dickinson and his wife, Georgiana, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Douglas A. Dickinson, who died July 6, 1999, and several brothers and a sister.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2005, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Chestnut Street and Glen Avenue, with the Rev. Sundar R. Samuel, pastor, and the Rev. William A. Highfield, former pastor, officiating.

A Masonic service will be conducted Sunday afternoon as part of the funeral service at the church.

Immediately after the services, all attending are invited to join with the Dickinson family for a time of refreshment and fellowship in the church’s Fellowship Hall.

Later this spring, burial, with military honors by members of the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579, will take place in Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

The Dickinson family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Catskill Area Hospice, and especially to Dr. Eric Del Giacco, for their kind and considerate care of Persh.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to The Memorial Fund, c/o Cooperstown United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, NY 13326 or Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 1 Birchwood Drive — Dept. FH, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Edward Nevins

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — Edward (Ed) Nevins, 76, a former baker and chef, died peacefully Thursday, March 31, 2005, at home in Ormond Beach.

Born in Yonkers, he was an Army mess sergeant during the Korean War. He moved from Connecticut to Gilboa in 1978, where he resided with his wife, Grace, who predeceased him in 1999, before relocating to Ormond Beach, Fla.

During his years on "the mountain" Edward was employed by the Prattsville Diner, Golden Acres Ranch and Deer Run before retiring from Camp Summit Shock. He also worked for Hall Funeral Home.

He will be sadly missed by his daughter, Linda Kane (Jerry); son, Edward Nevins Jr. (Donna); grandchildren, Jason, Christopher, Edward III and Jamie; great-grandchildren, Skyler and Payton; and a host of loving friends.

A heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sanford Kinne, all his medical staff and Memorial Hospice Care.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 4.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, at the funeral home.

Interment will follow in the Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla.

Donations may be made in memory of Ed to Florida Hospital, Memorial Hospice Care, 875 Sterhaus Ave., Ormond Beach, FL 32174-9976.

Irma Keegan

ONEONTA — Irma Keegan, 97, of Oneonta passed away Friday, April 1, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home.

She was born Jan. 25, 1908, in Belfast, the daughter of James and Margaret (McAndrew) O’Boyle.

She married Dr. Edward Keegan, M.D., on Nov. 25, 1936, in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Belfast. He passed away Feb. 25, 1973.

A 70-year resident of the Oneonta and Davenport Center area, she was a graduate of the Sisters of Charity School of Nursing in Buffalo.

She often assisted her husband, Dr. Keegan, in his 37 years of medical practice in Oneonta.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Church.

Mrs. Keegan is survived by her sons, Richard Keegan and wife Carole of Mt. Vernon, Ill., and Peter Keegan and wife Diane of Jacksonville, Fla.; her grandchildren, David and wife Patricia of Brooklyn, Kelli Diaz and husband Jorge of Aurora, Ill., Valerie Stickler and husband Chris of Tioga, Pa., and Krista Mayes and husband Brett of Round Rock, Texas; her great-grandchildren, Alicia and Jorge Diaz Jr. of Aurora, Ill., and Adam Stickler of Tioga, Pa.; as well as several nieces.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Kathy Keegan; two sisters, Hazel Baker and Lillian Bettanger; and two brothers, Frank O’Boyle and Patrick O’Boyle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, at St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta with the Rev. Steven Moore, associated pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Mary’s School.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Irene June

MARYLAND — Mrs. Irene June, 92, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2005, at the Otsego Manor.

She was born April 17, 1912, in Fort Montgomery, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Doyle) Pohl.

On Dec. 3, 1931, she married Clarence J. June Sr. in Cornwall. He predeceased her in 1992.

She loved to cook for her family and friends. She enjoyed feeding the birds with her many bird feeders and watching them.

Survivors include her eight children, sons, Clarence Jr. of Walden, Gilbert, Arthur of Stony Point, William of Cooperstown; daughters, Caroline Stalter of Cooperstown, Barbara Lodine of Stony Point, Eileen Bramsen of Maryland and Sharon June of the state of Maryland; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 60 years; four brothers; and three sisters.

Memorial and committal services will be held in Doodletown in the June Cemetery, Bear Mountain State Park, at a later date.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Velma M. Davis

RICHMONDVILLE — Mrs. Velma M. Davis, 85, of Main Street, Richmondville, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at East Pasco Medical Center in Zephyrhills, Fla.

Mrs. Davis was born June 8, 1919, in Maryland, the daughter of John and Clara (Morris) Scanlon.

She was a lifelong area resident and a member of the United Methodist Church in Richmondville. She was a past member of the United Methodist Women and the Richmondville Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

Mrs. Davis married George O. Davis on May 30, 1937. He predeceased her June 29, 2003.

She was the beloved mother of a daughter, Linda J. Parsons of Quakertown, Pa.; four sons, George A. Davis of Zephyrhills, Fla., William E. Davis of Skaneateles, Richard K. Davis of Grapevine, Texas, and Garry O. Davis of Richmondville. She is also survived by a brother, Gerald Scanlon of Brooksville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with the retired Rev. Victor Zaccaro officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2005, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maryland Cemetery, Maryland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Richmondville, NY 12149.

Richard W. Peet

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Richard Wendell Peet, 72, of Zephyrhills, Fla., passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at his home in Zephyrhills.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Peet; his sons, Timothy Peet and Stephen Peet; his daughter, Lynda Peet; stepson, David Doig; stepdaughters, Tammy Carey and Jo-Ann Sokowski; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his brother, Donald Peet; his sister, Nancy Fraize; three nieces; seven nephews; and many friends in New York and Florida who are too numerous to name.

Richard is predeceased by his father, Wendell T. Peet, and mother, Juanita S. Peet; his son, Jeffrey Peet; and his sister, Carolyn McLaud.

He was born in Oneonta on Oct. 24, 1932, the first child of Wendell T. and Juanita S. Peet. He left Laurens Central School in 1950 before his graduation to join the United States Army, serving in Korea with D Company 4th Signal Battalion, 10th Corps, 8th U.S. Army, as a secure radio telephone operator.

Upon his discharge as a staff sergeant in 1953, he returned to the Oneonta area, where he worked for the Enterprise Aluminum Company. He went to work for Harry and Mary Brigg’s Feather and Screen in 1955. In 1958, he started his own TV repair business. In 1973, he expanded his business by purchasing Feather and Screen TV and Appliance to be renamed Valley TV until its sale in 1983. Upon selling his TV business, he went to work for the Coldwell Banker firm of Lobdell Real Estate until his retirement in 1999.

He was a member of the Laurens American Legion, the Davenport Fire Department, the Oneonta Elks and the Zephyrhills Moose.

No funeral service is planned.

A committal service is planned at the Laurens Cemetery, Laurens, on June 11, 2005.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hernando-Pasco Hospice, 12107 Majestic Blvd., Hudson, FL 34667-2460.

Elaine L. Stabile

WORCESTER — Elaine Lillian (Cropper) Stabile, 73, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 13, 1931, in Coney Island, the daughter of Lloyd and Rachel Cropper.

She married Gaspare Stabile in 1972, in Staten Island. After marriage, they lived in New Springville for 10 years and then moved to Worcester in 1982.

Elaine loved to pick and jar her own tomatoes and peaches. She collected elephants. She raised border collies and cockatiel birds and had three cats, Sillybee, Tippy and Luckabee.

Most of all, she loved being around her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Gaspare Stabile of Worcester; her children, Karin Hoppe, Harry and his wife, Susan Fosco, Wendy and her husband, John Gaudioso, Penny and her husband, Michael DeVita, Christina and her husband, Douglas Banister, Marguerite and her husband, Anthony McAree, and Theresa and her husband, Angelo Vetrano; grandchildren, Douglas and his wife, Katalin Hoppe, Russell Hoppe, Jessica Hoppe, Jason and his wife, Roslyn Fosco, Rachel Fosco, Keith Fosco, Ali Banister, Amanda Banister, Nicholas DeVita, Emily DeVita, Pamela DeVita, Taylor McAree, Nicole McAree, Samantha McAree, Joseph Vetrano and Gaspare Vetrano; and two brothers, Lawrence Cropper of Florida and Leroy Cropper of Staten Island.

Memorial services will be held at noon Saturday, April 30, 2005, in the Stamford United Methodist Church, 88 Main St.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Elaine’s memory may be made to the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, Route 10 Bloomville, Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
