Dorathea Burney

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mrs. Dorathea H. Burney, 86, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 2, 2005, at Otsego Manor.

She was born Jan. 17, 1919, in the town of German Flats, the daughter of Charles and Lydia (Lewis) Henrickson.

On Sept. 6, 1941, she married Claude A. Burney in Union Center. He predeceased her Sept. 17, 1997.

She was employed at Univac in Ilion for several years. She was past member of the Order of the Eastern Star Arbutus Chapter 317, Richfield Springs, where she held many offices.

Mrs. Burney is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Sharyn Burney of Madison, Wis.; three daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra Burney, Sharon and Floyd Eckler of Richfield Springs, and Patricia Burney of Cooperstown; five grandchildren, Mary and Jamie Hardee of Rome, Michael Eckler of Alexandria Bay, and David and Sarah Burney of Madison, Wis. She also leaves two sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Charles, Theodore and Edward Henrickson, and a sister, Louise Prentice.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. April 23, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating. Burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, at a later date.

There will be no public calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Burney’s memory may be made to the Richfield Springs Fire Department and Emergency Squad.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Audrey C. Bailey

OTEGO — Audrey C. Bailey, 67, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, March 31, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born May 13, 1937, in Otego, the daughter of Larry and Zelma (Davis) Sampson.

Audrey married Harold I. Bailey on Oct. 17, 1956, in Oneonta. She was employed as a bus driver for Oneonta Public Transit and then for Head Start in Oneonta, from which she recently retired.

Audrey loved to knit, and for many years knitted mittens for her kids at Head Start, totaling 100 mittens each year.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Bailey of Otego; her children, Liz and her husband, John Shaver, of Unadilla, Mary Finch and her fiance, William "Jake" Jacobsen, of Cobleskill, and Larry and his wife, Tammy Bailey, of Otego; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Juanita Young of Otego; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Maynard Sampson.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Evelyn Lintern of the Sidney Center United Methodist Church officiating.

Calling hours were 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 4, at the funeral home.

Interment will be in the Ostdawa Cemetery in Otego.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Kathryn Mumford

OTEGO — Kathryn (Patrick) Mumford, 90, passed away peacefully at the home of her son Jerry Patrick in Schenectady.

She was born in Rock Royal on Feb. 9, 1915, the daughter of the late Charles and Edna (Clark) Sowles Gabriel.

Kathryn grew up in Mount Upton and Sidney and lived for several years in Sidney Center and Franklin Depot. There she and her husband, Walter, operated Walt & Kate’s Feed and Coal. She was later an inspector with Bendix Aviation/Scintilla Division in Sidney.

In 1966, she married Earl Mumford and resided in Otego until Earl’s death June 1, 2000.

In 1972, she founded The Knitting Mill and used fine yarns and wools from around the world to create sweaters, blankets and a variety of machine-woven products. She was a Brother distributor and provided lessons on the art and technique of machine knitting.

Mrs. Mumford is survived by and will be sadly missed by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Janet Patrick, Klamath Falls, Ore., and Jerry and Barbara Patrick, Schenectady; daughter and her fiance, Rosamary Potter and William Wlasiuk, Sidney. She is also survived by her brother-in-law and his wife, Donald and Mary Mumford, Oakfield; and sister-in-law, Nina Clark, Canisteo. Kathryn was indeed blessed with many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Kathryn was predeceased by her late husband, grandsons James Potter and James Patrick, and her granddaughter Lisa Patrick.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Edwin Lintern of the Otego Presbyterian Church officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Otego at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Kathryn’s memory to the Otego Presbyterian Church.

Charlotte Schlaegel

DELHI — Charlotte E. Schlaegel, 93, of Delhi died Monday, April 4, 2005, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born Sept. 22, 1911, in Germany, the daughter of Johannes and Anna (Weber) Meyer.

She married Walter Schlaegel in 1934. He predeceased her in 1985.

Retiring in 1980, Charlotte was employed as a bookkeeper for a shipping and forwarding company in New York City.

She moved to Florida in 1988 and stayed until 2002, when her failing health forced her to move closer to family. It was at that time she moved to Castle Gardens Senior Living Center in Vestal. In 2004, she was admitted to the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

Of the many activities she enjoyed, swimming was one of her favorites. She also took an interest in needle work and crafts.

Charlotte is survived by two daughters, Hella Viola of Walton and Monika and Fritz Reuter of Bremen, Germany; grandchildren, Monika and John Schiavo of Virginia, Mark A. Viola of Virginia and Astrid Reuter of Bremen, Germany; and two great-grandchildren, Hellena Schiavo and Anthony Schiavo of Virginia.

She was predeceased by one sister and two brothers.

Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Guy E. Rathbun

MORRIS — Guy Edwin Rathbun, 96, of Morris died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born Jan. 29, 1909, in Hyde Bay, town of Middlefield, the son of Edwin J. Rathbun and Ethel (Bridger) Rathbun. He lived in Springfield as a young boy until the death of his father, at which time the family moved to Cooperstown where he attended a rural school near Cooperstown and also Cooperstown High School.

He married Dora Peck on Jan. 12, 1929, in Cooperstown. She died May 7, 1993.

He graduated from the D&H School of Telegraphy and was a telegraph operator for the railroad doing railway and Western Union telegraphy for a period of time.

During his early years, he was a jockey for Robert Sterling Clarke Stables of Cooperstown. From 1932 to 1934, he was employed as a machine operator for the Utica Knitting Company in Anniston, Ala. He came to Morris in October 1934 as overseer of the Manor House Stables and hunting dogs, a position he held until 1972, when he was appointed general manager of the Lewis R. Morris Estate, retiring from that position in January 1995.

Guy was an avid Republican, serving as a justice of the peace for the town of Morris from 1946 to 1950, when he resigned to become town supervisor, a position he held for 20 years. He resigned to become a county representative from Otsego County District No. 4, serving the towns of Pittsfield, Butternuts and Morris until 1972.

He had served as chairman of the Board of Representatives from its beginning until his retirement from the board. He served as a member and chairman of the Otsego County Republican Committee for many years. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America serving as scoutmaster of Troop No. 3, Morris for 12 years and was still serving as a member of the troop committee and treasurer of the troop.

In 1945, Guy was awarded the "Silver Beaver Award," the highest award given to civilians in scouting. He also held the Scoutmasters Key Award for training in scouting. He was a charter member of the Morris Rotary Club and served as past president, secretary, and at one time was editor of the weekly Rotary newsletter.

He was a Paul Harris Fellow and song leader of the club for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Hillington Cemetery Board of trustees and a member of the United Methodist Church of Morris, singing in the choir and serving on numerous committees.

He is survived by his daughter, Sheila Valentine of Morris; his grandsons, Richard A. Valentine of Morris and Edwin J. Valentine and wife, Annette, of Liverpool; a granddaughter, Sheryl Baker and husband, Kenneth, of Harlem, Ga.; his great-granddaughters, Sharon Butts, Karen Griffith and Erika Valentine; as well as two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins and many friends.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Gertrude Foote, Harriet Mitchell and Fanny Lee.

He was very loved by his friends and community.

Calling hours will be held at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2005,

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2005, at the United Methodist Church in Morris with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

Those who wish may donate to the Morris Rotary Club Scholarship Fund or the Morris Emergency Squad in Guy’s memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Wesley Bowen

BURLINGTON FLATS — Wesley Bowen, 66, of Burlington Flats died unexpectedly Saturday, April 2, 2005, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 13, 1938, in the town of Exeter, the son of Horace and Lois (Joslyn) Bowen.

On May 25, 1963, at the Methodist Church in Morris, he married Hilda Harrington, who survives.

Wesley was a farmer his whole life, beginning farming at the age of 7. He loved to golf and attend auctions and tractor pulls. Traveling, attending concerts, investing and deer hunting were also interests of Wesley.

He was a life member of the Exeter Center United Methodist Church and served as the treasurer of the Exeter Center Cemetery Association.

Wesley was a devoted father and husband, and in addition to his wife, Hilda, he is survived by his children, Karen Bowen, Marena and Christopher Maier, Colleen Renwick, Kevin and Michele Bowen and Valerie and Tony Backo; and four grandchildren, Natasha, Blake, Cody and Miranda. His brother and sister-in-law, Russell and Janet Bowen; his sister and brother-in-law, Marcia and Bob Ubner; and his sister, Charlene Mulford; and many nieces and nephews also survive Wesley.

An infant sister, Gladys, predeceased him.

Funeral services for Wesley will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at the West Exeter United Methodist Church with Pastor Richard Anderson officiating.

Calling hours for Wesley will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston. Burial will follow at the Exeter Center Cemetery.

Contributions in memory of Wesley may be made to either the West Exeter United Methodist Church or the West Exeter Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

William E. Ryan

ONEONTA — William E. Ryan Sr., 64, of Oneonta died Monday, April 4, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a brief illness with cancer.

He was born Dec. 26, 1940, in Ann Arbor, Mich., the son of John and Vivian Ryan.

Bill married Kim Spezzano on Sept. 4, 1964, in Ann Arbor, Mich. From 1974 to 1976, he and his family owned and operated a restaurant, the Country Kitchen, in Manchester, Mich. They moved to Oneonta in 1977.

He graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1963.

Bill retired in 1999 from the Organization of Ancillary Services at SUNY Oneonta, where he served as the general manager from 1992 to 1999. He joined OAS in 1977 as food-service director. He previously worked in various food-service and administrative positions at the University of Michigan, Wayne State University and in the private sector.

His involvement in community activities has been extensive, serving as a member of the Board of Education of the Oneonta City School District for more than 10 years, from 1982 to 1992, and in 1996. During those times he held the office of president from 1984 to 1987, and briefly during 1996.

Bill was a member of the Oneonta Kiwanis Club, serving as president from 1990 to 1991. He was also a long-standing member of the Elks Club. In addition, for several years Bill was active with the Boy Scouts of America, coached youth baseball programs and enjoyed many outdoor activities including camping, canoeing, fishing and golf.

He is survived by his son, William E. Ryan Jr., and daughter-in-law, Kaarin Anderson Ryan, of Setauket; daughter, Katherine Ryan of Grafton; son, John P. Ryan of Ithaca; grandchildren, Joshua, Anneli and Sofia Ryan; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother, Robert F. Ryan of Ann Arbor, Mich.

Bill was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Muriel Leipprandt; his brother, Donald Blair; and his wife, Kim Ryan.

The family of Bill Ryan would like to extend their deepest gratitude to his close friends for all of their help over the past few months. Bill sincerely appreciated everything you did for him.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2005, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating. After the service, there will be a reception at the Oneonta Elks Club.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the American Lung Association, 3 Winners Circle, Suite 300, Albany, NY 12205-1187.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Velma M. Davis

RICHMONDVILLE — Mrs. Velma M. Davis, 85, of Main Street, Richmondville, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at East Pasco Medical Center in Zephyrhills, Fla.

Mrs. Davis was born June 8, 1919, in Maryland, the daughter of John and Clara (Morris) Scanlon.

She was a lifelong area resident and a member of the United Methodist Church in Richmondville. She was a past member of the United Methodist Women and the Richmondville Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

Mrs. Davis married George O. Davis on May 30, 1937. He predeceased her June 29, 2003.

She was the beloved mother of a daughter, Linda J. Parsons of Quakertown, Pa.; four sons, George A. Davis of Zephyrhills, Fla., William E. Davis of Skaneateles, Richard K. Davis of Grapevine, Texas, and Garry O. Davis of Richmondville. She is also survived by a brother, Gerald Scanlon of Brooksville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with the retired Rev. Victor Zaccaro officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2005, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maryland Cemetery, Maryland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Richmondville, NY 12149.

Hanford D. Nichols

WALTON — Hanford D. Nichols, 85, of Walton passed away Tuesday night, April 5, 2005, at home surrounded by his family.

Hanford was born on the family farm on Freer Hollow on Aug. 5, 1919, the son of the late Harry and Margaret DuMond Nichols, and lived and worked there his entire life. He retired from farming in 1984.

Mr. Nichols married the former Helen Titch on June 5, 1945, at the United Presbyterian Parsonage, Walton.

He was an avid hunter who enjoyed raising hunting dogs and exotic animals. He often played host to school field trips, during which swans, peacocks and other exotic birds were viewed on his farm.

Hanford was a graduate of Walton High School, class of 1938. He was a longtime member of the United Presbyterian Church, Walton, and the New York State Fish and Wildlife Board, and was an Agway committeeman. Since retirement, he enjoyed many years with Del-Se-Nango Fiddlers.

He truly loved his family and neighbors.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; two daughters, Susan K. Bright, Walton, and Margaret and Bill Zoucha, Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons, Harry L. Nichols and his friend, Ruth Marshall, DeLancey, and Allen H. and Fran Nichols, Laurens; 11 grandchildren, Kevin and Scott Sanford, Angela Sanford Felter, Daniel Wood Jr., Carleen, Adam, Matthew and Kristie Nichols, Jody Nichols Nebesnik, Nichole and Whitney Zoucha; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth Conklin of Walton; and a nephew, Jim C. Stevens.

He was predeceased by a sister, Letha; and a brother, William.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2005, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Presbyterian Church, 58 East St., Walton, with the Rev. Dr. James Martin and the Rev. William Robertson officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Hanford’s memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

William Constable

WALTON — William T. Constable, 82, of Walton died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton.

He was born July 21, 1922, in Sidney to Bert and Lillian Thompson Constable.

Bill married Ruth Green on Sept. 6, 1975, in Masonville. Mrs. Constable predeceased him June 2, 1985.

For more than 30 years, Bill worked for the New York State Department of Transportation in Walton until his retirement.

He enjoyed woodcrafting, going out to eat, working in his garden, camping and fishing at Masonville Pond and spending time with his nieces and their families. He was an avid New York Yankees fan.

Bill is survived by his two nieces and their husbands, Anna and Jim Alger of Walton and Barb and Jan Robinson of Walton. He is also survived by two great-nieces and one great-nephew.

He was predeceased by two sisters and their husbands, Roberta and Larry Tomao and Edna and Ken Archer.

There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, at Walton Cemetery, Walton.

Memorial contributions to the Walton Emergency Squad, 63 West St., Walton, NY 13856 in his name would be appreciated.

Arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, Walton.
