Robert Kovatchitch

MILFORD — Robert (Bob) F. Kovatchitch, formerly of Milford and most recently of Index, died Monday, April 4, 2005, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. He was 87 years old.

Bob was born May 12, 1917, in Johnstown, Pa., the son of Frank and Mary (Gorence) Kovatchitch. As a youngster, he moved with his family to the Cooperstown area where they purchased and operated a family farm on County Route 33. He attended school in Cooperstown and for several years thereafter worked on the family farm.

He married Evelyn (Montayne) on July 22, 1939. In 1941, they purchased their home on Route 28 in the village of Milford and resided there until 1988, when they moved, first to the Oneonta area and more recently to Index.

Bob was a World War II era veteran (1944-46), and was a charter member of the Milford American Legion.

He loved baseball and, in the early 1940s, played with the Milford Macs. When not hunting or fishing, he loved to watch stock car races (both on TV and at Fonda) and hockey and baseball games.

He was a "regular" at Crowley’s and also at Mike’s Diner in Milford.

He was employed for many years at Agway (formerly Harrison Feeds) in Milford.

He is survived by Evelyn, his beloved wife of 65 years; his daughter, Patricia McAllister of Scotia; his son, Richard Kovatchitch of East Greenbush; four grandchildren, Sheila Sweeney, Jeffrey Kovatchitch, Bruce McAllister and Carl Kovatchitch; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Marie Kodrich and Louise Teal; his brother, Joseph Kovatchitch and Joseph’s wife, Margaret; and by several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Robert F. Kovatchitch; his sister, Sophie Schraft; and his brother, Frank Smith.

Funeral services for Bob will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home on Route 28 in Milford, with Father John Rosson, rector of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating. The family will be present from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. to receive friends.

Burial will take place in the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery in Saratoga at noon Monday, April 11.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Richard G. Merwin

GRAND GORGE — Richard G. "Dick" Merwin, 82, of Grand Gorge passed away peacefully Thursday, April 7, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after an extended illness.

He was born Sept. 23, 1922, in Hobart, the son of Guy and Flossie (Hilliker) Merwin.

Dick married Beatrice Buel on Dec. 14, 1985. They recently moved back to Grand Gorge from Deland, Fla. He retired from Lane Construction Corp. in 1984 after 30 years.

Dick is survived by his wife, Beatrice; his daughter, Barbara (Bobbie), and her husband, Stephen Jackson, of West Conesville; his son, David, and his wife, Judith Merwin, of Conesville; a stepdaughter, Joyce Diamond of Deland, Fla.; and two stepsons, Gerald Jaeger and Arnold and his wife, Diane Jaeger, all of Prattsville. He is also survived by two sisters, Pauline Collins of Bloomville and Carol Miller of Selkirk; one brother, Kenneth Merwin of West Conesville; seven grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Alice Wayman Merwin; and a brother, George Merwin.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will be held a 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at the Manorkill Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Charlotte E. Odell

DELHI — Charlotte E. Odell, 75, formerly of Glen Burnie, Delhi, passed away Friday afternoon, April 1, 2005, at O’Connor Hospital, Delhi.

The daughter of Paul E. and Charlotte (Knoble) Barsch, she was born Aug. 31, 1929, in New York City and married Clifford M. Odell on June 23, 1951, in White Plains.

A 28-year resident of Thornwood, Westchester County, Charlotte was employed as an operator for New York Telephone Company in Mount Kisco.

In 1985, the Odells moved to Delhi, where she lived until her husband’s death Oct. 27, 1994. After which, she moved to Homosassa, Fla., where she lived with her son, Paul Odell. After his death in May 1999, she subsequently returned to Delhi, where she had been a resident at Countryside Care Center for the past four years.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Jerry Decker of Bloomville; a grandson, Clifford E. Odell of Eugene, Ore.; five stepgrandchildren; and a stepgreat-granddaughter, Abigail Ann Decker.

Private services, with burial in the family plot at Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Activities Fund at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Sadie Oravetz

MARGARETVILLE — Sadie Oravetz, 89, died peacefully Sunday, April 3, 2005, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Sadie was a longtime resident of Margaretville. She and her husband, Paul, moved to the Catskills in 1950, where she and her husband operated a dairy farm.

She was a member of the New Kingston Valley Grange for 25 years and she was a charter member. She was a member of the New Kingston Presbyterian Church and of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Sadie is survived by her husband of 57 years, Paul, who resides at Robinson Terrace Nursing Facility, Stamford; her son, Robert, and daughter-in-law, Ruth, of Margaretville, and their children, Ryan and Vanessa; her daughter, Paula, and her husband, David Hamway, of Fort Myers, Fla., and their daughters, Jacqueline Arquin of Kennesaw, Ga., Jennifer Hamway of Orlando, Fla., Michele and son-in-law, Steven Sweet, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Jessica Hamway of Fort Myers, Fla. Sadie is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Jocelyn, Grace and Mason of Kennesaw, Ga., and Madelyn and Sara of Fort Myers, Fla. She is survived by three sisters, Eleanor and Walter Griffin of Grand Gorge, Clara Sharp of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Francis Baker of Doraville, Ga.; and a brother, Frank Petts of Las Vegas, Nev.; many nieces and nephews; as well as great-nieces and -nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Cecilia Callahan, and three brothers, Tom Petts, John Petts and Walter Petts.

Hynes Funeral Home of Margaretville will handle funeral arrangements. Service to be announced at a later date.

Mary Jubar

ONEONTA — Mary Minerosa Jubar of Oneonta died in the arms of the Lord after a brief illness at her residence surrounded by her loving family Thursday, April 7, 2005.

She was born in Oneonta, the daughter of Joseph Minerosa (Gesidio Mastrodicasa) and Angela (Zaccagnini) Minerosa.

She married Charles W. Jubar on Oct. 26, 1942. He passed away Oct. 5, 1998.

For more than 35 years, retiring in 1987, Mary worked as a quality control inspector at ECD Bendix in Sidney. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church.

Mary will be remembered for the beautiful wedding and special-occasion cakes she made. Mary was caring and loving and unselfishly gave of herself to her family and loved ones while always cherishing the memories of her husband and family members.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Thomas Borgio of Oneonta and Bristol, Conn.; her beloved grandchildren, Julie and Richard (Burr) Minckler, Orlo (Bill) and Julie Burch, Shelley Burch and Kerry Burch; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Andrew Burch, Anthony Antonucci, Nicholas Burch, Malia Minckler, Alyssa Burch and Maize Minckler. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews; as well as lifelong friends.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Rose Amarose and Emma Minerosa; and her brothers, Dominic, Anthony, Alfred, Nicholas and Carl Minerosa.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until service time Saturday.

Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Department FH, Oneonta, NY 13820, the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220 or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 120 Wall St., 19th Floor, New York, NY 10005.

Donald R. Campbell

OTEGO — Donald R. Campbell, 84, of Otego, formerly of 4 Western Ave., North Easton, Mass., passed away Thursday evening, April 7, 2005, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Jan. 9, 1921, in Abington, Mass., the son of William A. and Victoria M. (Bazinet) Campbell.

He married the former Avis Batchelder on June 25, 1944, in Brockton, Mass. She survives him.

Don lived in the area since 1987 and moved to Otego in 1999. He had been a products specialist for United Shoe in Boston before retirement. Don was a loving and thoughtful husband, father and grandfather. He loved being outdoors and watching his grandchildren play sports. He stayed constantly busy with several hobbies and home projects. A lifetime Red Sox fan, he was able to cheer them on through their World Championship. He’ll be missed dearly.

Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, Avis J. Campbell of Otego; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Ellen Campbell of Unadilla; one daughter, Lynn Gallo of Otego; and five grandchildren, Caitlyn Campbell, Laura Campbell, Julie Campbell, Christopher Niebuhr and Mikala Gallo. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the Prophet Funeral Home, 98 Bedford St. (Route 18) Bridgewater, Mass.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, before the service.

Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, West Bridgewater, Mass.

For those wishing to make memorial contributions, the family requests they be made to the Otego Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, NY 13825, in memory of Donald R. Campbell.

Emma A. Venth

BLOOMVILLE — Emma A. Venth, 63, formerly of Bloomville, passed away March 13, 2005. She died from complications following surgery at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre.

Emma was born April 22, 1941, to Louis and Marguerite Orthlieb of Valley Stream.

She was very active in band and in sports and was elected a member of the prestigious Long Island Girls Association and Leaders Club. After her graduation from Valley Stream Central High School in 1959, Emma worked as an executive secretary for the Federal Aviation Authority at JFK Airport.

She married Robert M. Venth Sr. in 1961. Emma moved to East Meredith in 1976, when she, her then-husband and their children bought a dairy farm.

In 1980, Emma became a licensed practical nurse. She graduated in the top 10 percent of her class from the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Program.

Emma worked at the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton and also worked private-duty cases before being appointed by the Broome Developmental Center to the position of executive director of the Townsend Street Community Residence in Walton. Emma was loved and admired by the residents as well as her peers.

Emma was a devout Christian and a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and cousin.

She was smart, witty, creative and multi-talented. Emma was a musician, a great cook, an avid gardener, skilled at handcrafts and a bright light in everyone’s life. She will always be remembered as a giving, caring, remarkable person who enriched our lives.

Emma is survived by her three children, Robert M. Venth Jr. (Beth) of Bloomville, Debra A. Cole (Todd Richards) of Seffner, Fla., and Kevin B. Venth (Susan) of Oceanside. She was blessed with four beautiful granddaughters, Leah Pickett Morton, Nicole Venth, Danelle Venth and Theresa Venth. Happily, Emma met, for the first time, her great-grandson, Jacob Morton, in January of this year. Emma is also survived by her brother, Paul Schoppel of Staten Island; two sisters, Stephanie Dexter of Rockville Centre and Mary Lou Masone of Center Moriches; as well as many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

A gathering to celebrate Emma’s life will be held Saturday, April 23, 2005, in Amity Harbor, Long Island.

Robin W. Straley

BUTTERNUTS — Robin William Straley, 43, of Halbert Hill Road in Butternuts passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 7, 2005, at his home.

Born in Denville, N.J., on Sept. 27, 1961, Robin was the son of James Edward and Carol (Stumpf) Straley.

Robin was a former truck driver for Circle Carting in Rockaway, N.J. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, especially salmon fishing. He was loved by his family and many friends and will be missed by all.

Robin is survived by his wife of 20 years, Jeannae of Mt. Upton; his parents, Carol and stepfather Doug Gumaer of Pennsylvania and James and Olga Straley of Florida; a son, Robin Straley Jr.; daughters, Rheiannon, Ralissa and Ryann Straley, all of Mt. Upton; a granddaughter, Hannah of Norwich; brothers, Rodney Gumaer and his wife, Kerri, of Lake Hopatcong, N.J., Jack Gumaer of Lake Hopatcong, Larry Gumaer of Randolph, N.J., and Doug Gumaer of Pennsylvania; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Kim and Michael Sherwood of Wharton, N.J., Melinda and Joe Chovanec of Rockaway, Zina and Michael O’Grady of Randolph and Kelly and Manuel Lavin of Pennsylvania. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

He was predeceased by a brother, Gordon Stirone, in 1997.

Funeral services for Robin will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 11, at the Wilson Funeral Home, 68 South Broad St., Norwich.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral home Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Norwich.

Contributions in memory of Robin may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale, Memphis, TN 38105.

Mary J. Chapman

BLOOMVILLE — Mary J. Chapman, 97, of Bloomville passed away Thursday, April 7, 2005, at South Kortright Rest Home, South Kortright.

She was born Jan. 13, 1908, in the town of Kortright, the daughter of Valentine and Laura (Kasmer) Swantak.

She married Luther Chapman on Sept. 5, 1931. He predeceased her June 17, 1988.

Mrs. Chapman was always involved in the family farm, helping with the cows, keeping the house for the family, cooking, sewing, quilting and creating lovely needlework. Her flower gardens were very special places, and she enjoyed working in them. Her grandchildren and neighborhood children will always remember the cookies she always had ready for them.

A daughter, Mary Ruth Wheeler, and her husband, Jessie, of South Kortright; a son, Francis Chapman, and his wife, Susan, of Bloomville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Hotaling of East Meredith and Helen Sega of Richmondville; and two sisters-in-law, Grace Kipp of Bloomville and Lila Swantak of South Kortright, survive.

She was predeceased by her husband and brothers and sisters, Jennie Meeghan, Effie Ruparshek, Sophie Cole, Anastosia Obliniski, Mike Swantak, Frank Swantak, Joe Swantak and Steve Swantak.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 11, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Burial will follow the service Monday in Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Recreation Fund at South Kortright Rest Home or the Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Roland R. Thompson

DELHI — A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2005, in Woodland Cemetery for Roland R. Thompson, 50, who passed away Nov. 2, 2004, in Arcata, Calif.

The Rev. Miriam Hathaway will officiate.

Jeanette Matteson

FRANKLIN — Jeanette A. Matteson, 89, of Franklin passed away peacefully at home Friday, April 8, 2005.

She was born March 22, 1916, in North Stonington, Conn., the daughter of the late Lyle and Alice (Richmond) Gray.

She married Douglas Matteson on July 16, 1940, and moved to Franklin. He predeceased her April 2, 1997.

For many years she took an active part helping in the family business, Matteson Feeds, a longtime Franklin establishment.

She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a 50-year plus member of the Washington Reading Circle. She was a member for 65 years of the Franklin Congregational Baptist Church (now the Community Bible Church) where she was the church organist for 40 years, a past president of the church’s Women’s Federation, and a Sunday school teacher. Most recently she was attending the Aldrich Baptist Church in North Franklin.

Jeanette also gave piano lessons and enjoyed traveling with her husband to visit her children and friends. She loved baking cookies to share with others, as she always was cheerful with a positive attitude, and gave love and happiness to her many friends, neighbors and family.

She loved all kinds of music, as well as being a baseball fan. In recent years, her passion was scrapbooking — as she said, "It helps me relive all those wonderful memories."

She was especially thankful for her dear, dedicated caregiver, Maryland Kelsey. They spent special times together, bringing joy and happiness to their many friends.

She is survived by three children and their spouses, Adrienne and Chester Silvernail of Greene, Terry and Pam Matteson of East Sandwich, Mass., and Kathleen and Tommy Garth of Timberville, Va.; 10 grandchildren, the Rev. Steven Simpson and his wife, Shannon, of Genoa, Ohio, Julie Dell’Aria and her husband, Frank, of Shoreham, Colleen Knudson and her husband, Garry, of Exton, Pa., Amy Matteson and Rebecca Matteson of Sandwich, Mass., Jarrod Matteson and his wife, Andrea, of Boston, Mass., Matthew Schneiderman of New York City, Adam Schneiderman and his wife, Jennifer, of Roanoke, Va., Justin Schneiderman of Los Angeles, Calif., and Jessica Schneiderman of Charlottesville, Va.; eight great-grandchildren, Ashley Dell’Aria, Joey and Jenna Walton, Scott and Elizabeth Knudson, Alexander and Ethan Monterrey and Ariel Schneiderman.

She is also survived by a brother-in-law, William Butler, and a brother-in-law and his wife, Ellsworth and Eleanor Matteson; her sisters-in-law, Irene and her husband, Robert Johnson, Arlyn Wade, Ruth Hoyt, Janice Peckham and Ruth Matteson; as well as 23 nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Marjorie Coates, Anita Bartlett and Marilyn Butler; also, her sons-in-law, James Simpson, Richard Schneiderman; and a stepgranddaughter, Gail Silvernail.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2005, in the Franklin Community Bible Church, with her grandson, the Rev. Steven J. Simpson, officiating. Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Aldrich Baptist Church, Franklin Community Bible Church, Franklin Emergency Squad or a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Walter Barckmann

WHITING, N.J. — Walter H. Barckmann, 86, of Crestwood Village IV, Whiting, Manchester, formerly of Jupiter, Fla., and Franklin, died Friday, April 8, 2005, at Community Medical Center in Toms River, N.J.

Commander Barckmann retired from the United States Navy after a service of 24 years. He then served as Captain of USNS Military Sea Lift Command Ships for 28 years and retired from the U.S. Merchant Marines at the age of 76. He saw service in World War II and was captain of a destroyer during the Korean Conflict.

Born in Brooklyn, he grew up in Teaneck, N.J., and traveled extensively during his military career before sharing residences between Jupiter, Fla., and Franklin. He moved to Whiting in 2004.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy; two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen and Peter Marsigilo of Walton, and Linda Papenhausen of Whiting, N.J.; four grandchildren, Peter, Kurt, Daniel and Teri; and three great-grandchildren, Aiden, Maximus and Lucia.

He was predeceased by one son, Jon Carl Barckmann, in 1981.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Aaron Cremation Associates Inc., Whiting, N.J., is in charge of arrangements.
