Irene Birdsall

WALTON — Irene Birdsall, formerly of Walton, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi. She was 95.

Mrs. Birdsall was born May 27, 1909, in Shavertown, one of 10 children of Frank and Sarah Yeomans Barber. She attended school in Arena.

On Dec. 18, 1930, she married David R. Birdsall in Newburgh.

Mrs. Birdsall was at Delaware County Countryside Care Center for the past seven years. Before that, she lived in Walton from 1951 to 1998. Before moving to Walton, she lived in Margaretville.

She was a member of the West Brook Missionary Society in Walton and the Margaretville Methodist Church.

Mrs. Birdsall made and donated many quilts to Walton-area organizations. She enjoyed genealogy and collecting postcards. She was especially proud of her large collection of salt-and-pepper shakers.

She is survived by her daughters, Janet (Carl) Gregory, Helen (Raymond) Edwards, both of Walton, Patricia (Roger) Howe of Newark Valley and Karen (Bill) Pierpoint of Liberty; her sister, Dorothy (Bill) Watson; and brother, Paul (Phyllis) Barber. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her family received friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2005, at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton.

There will be a graveside service 1 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2005, at the Margaretville Cemetery with the Rev. Jeff Walsh of the Margaretville Advent Christian Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Walton Fire Department, 59 West St., Walton, NY 13856.

George Sturdevant

DELHI — George W. Sturdevant, a longtime resident of Delhi, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany. He was 81 years old.

Born April 15, 1923, in Hobart, he was the son of George M. and Esther (Bell) Sturdevant.

He married Wilhelmina (Billie) Kinch on Nov. 4, 1950.

He graduated from Delaware Academy in the class of 1942.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army in the Pacific Theatre.

After his military service, he was employed by the New York State Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1984.

He was a member of the Donald W. Gleason American Legion Post 190 in Delhi for many years. He was also a longtime member and willing worker of his church, the United Ministry of Delhi.

Surviving are his wife, Wilhelmina; his son, Charles Sturdevant, a son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Barbara Sturdevant, daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and William Post; grandchildren, Derek and his wife, Deborah Sturdevant, Shelby, D. Ryan and Patrick Sturdevant, Kenda, Sarrah and Hannah Post; great-grandsons, Cody and Benjamin Sturdevant; his sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Harold Utter; and many nieces and nephews.

Three sisters, Elma Sturdevant, Mariam Failla and Bernice Pollard, predeceased him.

Memorial services will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005, at the United Ministry of Delhi with the Rev. Lisa Heckman officiating.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Burial will take place at a later date in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are asked to be made to either Friends of Bassett for Home Dialysis, 1 Atwell Drive, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or the Capital Improvement Fund, the United Ministry of Delhi, PO Box 111, Delhi, NY 13753, in loving memory of George W. Sturdevant.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Elizabeth Ellen Worden Schmeller

ONEONTA — Elizabeth Ellen Worden Schmeller was born Dec. 26, 1914, in Pipestone, Minn., the third child of David A. and Elizabeth E. (Hastings) Worden.

She died April 13, 2005, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 90 years old.

Growing up in the Bloomville area, Elizabeth attended business school in Kingston and spent her adult years after 1935 in Binghamton. She worked as a cashier and accountant for GAF Corporation until her retirement in 1978.

Feb. 28, 1942, Elizabeth married Richard Alfred Schmeller, who predeceased her in 1956. Elizabeth and Richard shared a happy life at their Fuller Road home, and she remained there until 1993, spending her free time maintaining the house and landscape and enjoying her interests in reading and needlework.

With declining health, Elizabeth moved to Castle Gardens Senior Living Center in Vestal. She moved to Oneonta in 2003 to be closer to her niece, Beth Armstrong Benjamin and her husband, Wayne, of Morris.

They survive, as do her sister, Lucille Worden Meeghan of Greenwich; her brother, Robert David Worden of Bloomville; nephews, Bob Armstrong, John Armstrong, David Meeghan, Michael Worden, Clifford Worden and Lawrence Worden; nieces, Lavonne Meeghan Bain, Patricia Meeghan Verne, Sharon Worden Walters, Elaine Worden Fowler and Kathaleen Worden. A cousin, Enid Carter, and three sisters-in-law, Georgia Worden, Elizabeth Bacon and her husband, Jack, and Lyn Schmeller also survive. Additionally, she is survived by loyal friends, "the Brooks girls," Edna, Patty and Paula; Ruth Covert; and Marjorie and Harry Wild.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her brothers, James Herbert and Marshall Alex Worden; and her sister, Dorothy Worden Armstrong.

To the last days of her life, Elizabeth’s strong sense of humor and spirit of independence helped her and those around her to meet life’s challenges and travails. Her determination and resourcefulness were deeply admired by her family, friends and caretakers. Her wry humor deflected concerns about her welfare and repeatedly placed life in perspective for everyone. Her courage and stamina were sources of inspiration.

Arrangements are by Rice Funeral Home, Johnson City.

At Elizabeth’s request, there will be no calling hours or public service. Her family will gather at a later date to commemorate her life.

Her final resting place will be Vestal Hills Memorial Park.

Memorials to Elizabeth’s life may be sent to the Rheumatoid Arthritis Association, Lourdes Hospital, 169 Riverside Drive, Binghamton or the Blind Works Association, 55 Washington St., Binghamton.

John W. Wormsley

RIDGEVILLE, S.C. — John W. Wormsley, 52, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 12, 2005.

He was born Oct. 25, 1952, in Edmeston, the son of Orley Wormsley and the late Frances (Davis) Wormsley.

He married Roberta Cross on Feb. 4, 1981, in Endicott. John and Bobbie resided in Ridgeville, S.C., for many years before his untimely death.

John was self-employed and enjoyed his free time as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He also spent a lifetime loving and recalling every vehicle he ever owned.

Besides his father, Orley, and wife, Roberta, John is survived by a daughter, Tonya Peterman; granddaughters, Taylor and Alexis of Murphy, N.C.; a sister, Jalna Rudolph; two brothers, William (Diane) and Robert (Tracy); as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were by the James A. Dyal Funeral Home of Summerville, S.C.

Louis R. Kole

WALTON — Louis R. Kole Jr. (nee, Kalimago), 61, went to be reunited with his loved ones in heaven Friday, April 15, 2005. Index

He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on March 6, 1944, to Louis and Elizabeth Squires Kole Sr. He was a graduate of Albany Business College.

Louie was a well-known, well-liked quarryman in Delaware County and beyond. He had a deep love of and was an advocate for all animals, especially his girls, Nana, Tibi, Bibi and Kiki. Those who really knew him recognized the kind, caring, gentleman that he was. He had a huge heart and was a non-judgmental and accepting soul. Louie had many friends and enjoyed a good joke. He will be sorely missed.

Louie is survived by his devoted wife, Bettina (Sherrill) Kole; his daughters, Christine and Michael Willig of Pennsylvania, and Erica and Larry Ramirez of Arizona; his sons, Raymond and Michelle Kole of Arkville, and Gregory and Kellie Kole of Trout Creek; his father, Louis R. Kole Sr. and his companion, Mary McGrane, of Margaretville; his granddaughters, Ciandra and Zenida Lowe of Arizona, Arianna and Rebecca Kole, along with their mother, Christine Kole, of Andes, Tierra Kole of Arkville and Natalie Willig of Pennsylvania; and grandson, Gabriel Willig of Pennsylvania.

Louie is also survived by his mother-in-law, Bettie (Stafford) Smith, sisters-in-law Taya C. Whiteside, Jerri-Lynne Farney, Joy (Robert) Anderson and Tricia (Robert) Wardlow, all of Florida; brothers-in-law, James W. Smith and Tad (Pamela) Smith; an aunt, Andrea Van Fleet of Arkville; nieces, Brook and Breanna Wardlow; and nephews, Pheral Pierce, Luke Anderson, Joshua Smith, his special nephew Chase Whiteside and his "Little Bud" Haven Smith.

He was predeceased by his dear mother, Elizabeth, and the love of his life and daughter, Rachel Serena Kole, on Sept. 14, 1997.

It was Louie’s wish that he be cremated with a graveside service at Walton Cemetery, at a date and time to be announced.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.

Louie would like to be remembered by contributions to any non-kill animal shelter, or by simply doing something nice for someone. It was also his request that his friends not buy flowers, plant some instead.

For the last time, as Louie would say, "Later."

Mary Louise Kehr

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Mary Louise Kehr, 93, of Mallard Point, Cedar Falls, Iowa, formerly of Hendersonville, N.C., died Monday, April 11, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo of heart failure.

She was born in Laquin, Pa., on Sept. 14, 1911, the second daughter of Dr. Charles Melvin Coon and Nellie Brigham Coon. Because her mother was ill with tuberculosis at the time of her birth, Mary Louise was removed from the home to be raised by another family when she was 2 weeks old.

Mary Louise graduated from Elmira College in Elmira in 1933 with a bachelor’s degree and from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt., in 1934 with a master’s degree. She moved to Unadilla, where she taught English, Latin and French from 1934 to 1943.

She married a fellow teacher, August E. Kehr, in 1943. They lived in Hudson, Ithaca, Baton Rouge, La., Ames, Iowa, and Silver Spring, Md. They retired to Hendersonville, N.C., in 1979. In 2001, they moved to Cedar Falls to be near family.

Survivors include a daughter, Janet Flick and her husband, Charles, of Cedar Falls; two grandsons, Robert Flick of Shen Zhen, China, and William Flick of Huxley, Iowa; and a great-granddaughter, McKenzie Flick of Huxley, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother, her husband, August, in 2001 and her sister, Genevieve Coon, in 2002.

Inurnment will be at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery in Unadilla.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to the Pinecrest Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 421, Flat Rock, NC 28731.

Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.

Frank W. Degner

ONEONTA — Frank W. Degner, 75, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at Otsego Manor.

He was born Feb. 12, 1930, in Boston, Mass., the son of Frank and Ethel (Cottrial) Degener.

He married Ethel E. Bliss on Feb. 25, 1962, in Cherry Valley. Mrs. Degner predeceased him Dec. 9, 1998.

Frank worked as an assembler for Medi-Coach in Oneonta for a long time. He enjoyed paintings and different artwork.

He is survived by one sister, Mary A. Corn, and friend Nick Stilson of Otego; two brothers, John C. Palmatier and his wife, Wanda, of Hobart and Lawrence J. Palmatier and his wife, Maryann, of Milford; one son, Richard Degner of Cooperstown; and two daughters, Debbie Bowen and her husband, Thomas, of Cherry Valley and Bonnie Wayman of Springfield.

Frank was predeceased by one brother, Robert E. Palmatier of Edmeston.

Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Calling hours will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be later in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, Hartwick Seminary.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Frank W. Degner.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Donald W. Ashmore

LAURENS — Mr. Donald W. Ashmore, 73, of Laurens passed away Friday April 15, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Susan Melander, David Ashmore and Christopher Ashmore; and four grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Haberman of Riverhead, and a brother, John Ashmore of Rocky Point.

Interment will take place later.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Michael Barlow

COOPERSTOWN — A service of committal and burial for Michael Barlow, 86, who died Dec. 17, 2004, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2005, in Locust Hill Cemetery in Hobart with Nancy Truscott, deacon of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Hobart, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Irene June

MARYLAND — Memorial and committal services for Mrs. Irene June, 92, who passed away Sunday, April 3, 2005, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 7, in Doodletown in the June Cemetery, Bear Mountain State Park.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Rosemary B. Shea

ONEONTA — Rosemary Bowers Shea, 68, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 16, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Feb. 28, 1937, in Roscoe, the daughter of Jack and Frederica (Goodrich) Bowers.

Rosemary graduated from Oneonta State Teachers College in 1958, and was a member of Alpha Kappa Phi Sorority. She was a certified elementary teacher and taught briefly at Charlotte Valley Central School.

Rosemary was very active in Oneonta and Davenport local politics. She was an elected member of the Oneonta City School Board in 1974, and played an instrumental role in preventing the closing of Center Street School.

In 1976, she was a delegate to the Democratic Convention, and later was invited by the President of the United States and Mrs. Carter to the White House. Rosemary was also the vice-chairwoman and chairwoman of the Otsego County Democratic Committee; she was one of the first woman county chairs in New York state.

Rosemary was employed by the New York State Labor Department from 1976 to 1978. She was the owner/broker of Shea-Meadow Reality from 1986 to 2000. Rosemary was also the town of Davenport Assessor for eight years.

Rosemary’s interests and hobbies were quilting, traveling, camping, spending time at her cottage in Quebec and, most of all, spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Michael Shea and his wife, Julie, Brian Shea and his companion, Judy Speranzi, Daniel Shea and his wife, Christine, Patrick Shea and his wife, Rebecca, Dennis Shea and his wife, Patty Anne, Mathew Shea and his companion, Kelly MacPherson, and Mary Kate Shea and her husband, Michael Miglianti; her grandchildren, Jimmy, Megan, Leah, Mike, Jessica, Brittany, Breelin, Emily, Natalie, Delaney, Abigail, Sarah, Danny, Lila, Brian Shea, Michael and Brad Shires; three brothers, Edward, Allen, and Jon Bowers; and also by her former husband, Dennis Shea.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2005, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Anthony Chiaramonte and the Rev. Joseph Benintende as celebrants.

Contributions may be made to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, PO Box 27106, New York, NY 10087-7106 or Multiple Sclerosis Resources of Central New York Inc., PO Box 237, East Syracuse, NY 13057.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Barbara Petersen

BLENHEIM — Barbara E. Petersen, 71, passed away Friday, April 15, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

Barbara has been an area resident for more than 15 years, relocating from North Massapequa.

She will be remembered by her husband, Robert Petersen; her children, Joseph McGroarty of Levittown and Judy Phillips of Oklahoma City, Okla.; her brother, Douglas Follows; and her sister, Pat McDougal, both of Canada. She is also survived by four grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 18 and Tuesday, April 19, 2005.

Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2005. Interment will follow in the Stamford Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.
