Thelma Dalrymple

SIDNEY — Thelma C. Dalrymple, 85, died Monday, March 28, 2005, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born Aug. 23, 1919, the daughter of Joseph and Cora (Slawson) Charles.

She was a lifelong resident of Sidney. She graduated from Sidney Central School in 1938 and married Harold "Spic" Dalrymple on May 2, 1941.

Thelma worked for and retired from the First National Bank in Sidney and was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Sidney.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, "Spic," of 51 years; and her sisters, Wauneita Lord and Virginia Alger.

She leaves behind two daughters, Lynette and her husband, Anthony "Guff" Cumo, of San Diego, Calif., and Barbara and her husband, Dana Watt, of Mechanicville; 13 grandchildren and their wives, James and Kris, Gary and Celeste, Todd and Heidi Cumo of San Diego, Jason, Michael, Stephanie, Josiah, Jonathan, Michelle and Stephen Watt of Mechanicville; five great-grandchildren, Candice, Nathan, Jamie, Todd Jr. and Paige Cumo; and 12 nieces and nephews and their families.

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2005, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2005, in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Geneva DeMarco

HILLSBOROUGH, N.J. — Geneva (Ginny) DeMarco died Sunday, April 17, 2005, at Barbara E. Cheung Memorial Hospice, Edison, N.J., after a sudden and brief illness. She was 71 years old.

Born and raised in Sidney, she previously lived in North Plainfield, N.J., before moving to Hillsborough 20 years ago.

Mrs. DeMarco was a homemaker until her children grew older. She then worked for Brotman’s Fabrics in North Plainfield. She received her real-estate license in 1993, and since then had worked for Century 21, Worden & Green, Hillsborough.

She was a member of the Italian American Club Women’s Auxiliary, North Plainfield. She volunteered at the Roycefield Kennels, Hillsborough, and belonged to the Somerset Valley Playhouse.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, Alphonse (Al) DeMarco, who died in 2003. She was also predeceased by her mother, Bernice Stewart Koetzner, in 2003; her father, Francis Stewart; and brother, Carl Stewart.

Surviving are her daughter, JoAnne Waller Mills and her husband, Kenneth, of Tinton Falls, N.J.; and granddaughters, Jamie and Megan of Tinton Falls and Carolyn of Brick, N.J.; her daughter, Barbara Mazzagatti and her companion, Dennis Valcheck, of Hillsborough; and her granddaughter and grandsons, Michelle, Dominic and Rocco, all of Hillsborough. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Ernestine Campanelli of South Plainfield, N.J., and sister-in-law, Nancy (Vinnie) and her husband, Al Schmidt, of North Carolina; and nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.

Memorial services will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 North Gaston Ave., Somerville, NJ, (908) 725-3111.

Interment will be in Neshanic Cemetery, Amwell Road, Hillsborough.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, Somerset Unit, 600 First Ave., Raritan, NJ 08869.

Romaine M. Richer

CLOVIS, N.M. — A graveside funeral service and burial for Romaine Marie (Rogers) Quaif Richer, 85, who died March 12, 2005, in Clovis, N.M., will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 25, 2005, in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery, with the Rev. Sundar Samuel, pastor of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Raymond Higgins

COOPERSTOWN — A graveside funeral service and burial for Raymond Burton Higgins, 66, who died March 9, 2005, at Otsego Manor, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2005, in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery, with the Rev. Thomas E. Pullyblank, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Wayne J. Jones

HOBART — Graveside services for Wayne James Jones, 89, formerly of the Kortright area, who passed away March 14, 2005, in Lehigh Acres, Fla., will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2005, at the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport, with the Rev. Carol Wilson officiating.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Hobart.

Nancy Lee John

MECHANICVILLE — Nancy Lee John, 68, of Davenport Estates died Sunday, April 17, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Center, Burlington, Vt., a week after being stricken at home.

Born in Oneonta on Jan. 9, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Cora Bishop Wright.

A homemaker, Nancy had worked at the Convenient Food Mart in Mechanicville for several years.

She enjoyed crafts and was an avid Scrabble enthusiast who would challenge anyone anytime.

Survivors include her two sons, U.S. Navy Lt. Commander Joseph and wife Lori John of Fort Sheridan, Ill., and John F. John of Hemstreet Park, Mechanicville. Also surviving are grandchildren, Sarah, Nathan, D.J., Keira and Jarrod John; a sister, Judy (Jesse) Wright; brothers, Raymond (Mary) Wright and David (Kathy) Wright, all of Illinois, and Stan (Betty) Wright of Kentucky; along with nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Nancy John will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 South Main St., Mechanicville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Nancy’s family to be used for their special needs.

Emmett C. Jeffrey

GALLUPVILLE — Mr. Emmett C. Jeffrey, 86, of state Route 443, town of Wright, Gallupville, died Thursday, April 21, 2005, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany after a brief illness.

Mr. Jeffrey was born July 14, 1918, in Columbus, a son of Uri and Olive (Tuttle) Jeffrey. He had resided in the town of Wright since 1964 and had previously resided in the Norwich area, Chenango County.

Emmett was educated in Sherburne schools and later drafted into the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was an operating engineer for Local No. 106 in Albany and worked on many road and bridge projects in the state.

He was a former member of the Gallupville Volunteer Fire Department and served as a fire commissioner in Gallupville. He also attended St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Schoharie.

Survivors include his wife, Jane (White) Jeffrey, whom he married July 31, 1982; his children, Dot (Marvin) Jantzen of Earlville, Chuck (Terri-Ann) Jeffrey of Gallupville, Richard (Terry) Jeffrey of Central Bridge and Cindy (Jeffrey) Treis of Delanson; stepchildren, Stephen (Debi) Welle of Harriman, Kathy (C. Daniel) Dunne of Columbia, S.C., Barbara (Kenneth) Beson of Plainville, Conn., and Ellen Alessi of Cooperstown; one daughter-in-law, Marianne Jeffrey of Phoenix, Ariz.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one son, Ralph Jeffrey of Phoenix, Ariz., on Oct. 24, 2004.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday evening, April 24, 2005, at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main St., Schoharie.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2005, at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, Main Street, Schoharie. Burial will follow in the Schenevus Cemetery.

Ruth N. Meyerhoff

EAST MEREDITH — Ruth N. Meyerhoff, 82, of Houghtaling Hollow, East Meredith, died Thursday, April 21, 2005, in Fayetteville, surrounded by family.

She was born April 4, 1923, in New York City, the daughter of Donald G. and Kathrin (Howland) Rotzler.

She married Eric T. Meyerhoff on Sept. 18, 1948, in Walton. He predeceased her Sept. 9, 2002.

A registered nurse, working privately and in many area hospitals including O’Connor Hospital, Delhi, and A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, Ruth eventually retired after more than 15 years of employment at the South Kortright Boy’s School.

A devoted mother and grandmother, Ruth took great enjoyment in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by a daughter, Ericka and David Balch of Fayetteville; a son, Roger and Deborah Meyerhoff of Newnun, Ga.; a daughter, Faye and Marshall Swing of Cobleskill; a son, Garth and Debra Meyerhoff of Martha’s Vineyard; and a son, Craig and Marie Meyerhoff of Davenport; nine grandchildren, Erich R. Brown, Dr. Adrienne Stevens, Macord Stevens, Christopher Meyerhoff, Courtney Daniels, Matthew Meyerhoff, Alexandra Swing, Samantha Meyerhoff and Robert Meyerhoff; four great-grandchildren, Isabelle Ruth Brown, Erich Thomas Brown, Andrew W. Daniels and Marion Daniels; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Donald Rotzler, as well as her husband and parents.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in the East Meredith Cemetery, East Meredith, at 10 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2005.

Contributions are asked to be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, the Meridale Emergency Squad or a charity or organization of one’s choice, in loving memory of Ruth N. Meyerhoff.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Annemarie Bredin

ONEONTA — Annemarie Bredin, 36, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born March 3, 1969, in Staten Island, the daughter of David H. and Marie (Savin) Bredin.

Annemarie was the office manager for Starplex Corporation, an area property-management company.

A lifelong area resident, Annemarie was a member of St. Mary’s Church.

Annemarie was a loving and caring mother whose whole life focused on her son, Ryan.

She is survived by her son, Ryan Tyler Bredin of Oneonta; her parents, David and Marie Bredin of Oneonta; two brothers and a sister and their spouses, James and Bridget Bredin of Oneonta, Kevin and JoAnne Bredin of Chicago, Ill., and Kathie Bredin and her husband, Alan Bloomgarden, of Northampton, Mass.; and her nieces and nephews, Adam, Robert, Katie, Michael, Daniel, Alyssa, Jacob, Stephanie, Michelle, Cheryl, David, Cailey and Sarah. She is also survived by her godparents, Elsie and Bob Pomparelli; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at noon Saturday, April 23, 2005, at St. Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Leland C. Cook

JUPITER, Fla. — Leland C. Cook was born Jan. 5, 1933, the son of Cecil and Effie Cook.

Lee graduated from Sharon Springs Central School. Lee fought a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was predeceased by a son, Allan; a sister, Pearl Guernsey; five brothers, George, Harry, Herbert, Robert and Ralph; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Rita; a daughter, Jane Ann; and two lovely granddaughters. Also surviving are three sisters, Frances Roberts, Afton, Bernice Loker, Winter Springs, Fla., and Carol Johnson, Unadilla.

Lee retired from Frito Lay Company after many years. He started as a delivery driver and worked his way up to become a supervisor and manager. He traveled all over the United States in that capacity.

All his family and circle of friends will miss Lee very much. He was the rock of his Cook family and to his circle of friends. No one had a better attitude on life than Lee.

On April 9, 2005, Lee was laid to rest in Hollywood, Fla., alongside his son.

We will always love and miss you Lee, and we will soon join you and the rest of our large family. (Frances, Bernice and Carol).

Albert J. Postiglion

CHERRY VALLEY — Albert J. Postiglion, 83, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Utica.

He was born March 21, 1922, in Utica, the son of Anthony and Julia (Pawolek) Postiglion.

Albert married Lois A. Hibbard in Cherry Valley on Jan. 17, 1941. She predeceased him in 1998.

He attended Utica schools. Albert worked for 23 years for International Heater (Friedrich Co.) of Utica, until his retirement in 1988. He moved to Cherry Valley in 1986.

Survivors include a son, John Postiglion and his wife, Barbara, of Cold Brook; four granddaughters, Mrs. Paul (Darlene) O’Brien of Rome, Mrs. Donald (Michelle) Weaver of Frankfort, Valerie of Ilion, and Lisa of Utica; three great-grandsons, Peter, Justyn and Derek; a sister, Marion Carrollo of Utica; a sister-in-law, Margaret Jackson of Mohawk; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside memorial services will be later in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Billy D. Leimkuhler

ONEONTA — Billy D. Leimkuhler, 78, died peacefully at home Friday, April 22, 2005.

Bill was born Nov. 14, 1926, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of William and Queenie (Burger) Leimkuhler.

He graduated from Ottawa University in Kansas, University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, and received his doctorate from Penn State University.

Bill came to Oneonta in 1956 to teach at the Bugbee School and later was a professor of education at the State University College at Oneonta, retiring in 1989.

Bill and Anne Crysdale were married Sept. 7, 1963. They had two daughters.

After living in Franklin for 25 years, where Bill served several terms on the board of education, Anne and Bill returned to Oneonta in 1994, moving into the Wilber Park Apartments.

The family spent summers in Ocean Point, Maine.

Bill was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Oneonta, and St. Columba’s in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Leimkuhler; two daughters and their spouses, Kristin and William Strohmeyer of Waterville, Amy and Tim Williams of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Alec and Shannon Strohmeyer and Meredith and Iris Williams. He is also survived by two sisters, Jacqueline McCoy of Kansas City, Mo., and Barbara MacMillan of Lee’s Summit; several nephews; and his brother-in-law and wife, James and Barbara Crysdale of Coppell, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 28, at St. James Episcopal Church, 305 Main St., Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bill’s name to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care or A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, both in Oneonta.

Dorothy Wright

MARGARETVILLE — Dorothy "Dot" Wright, 72, of Margaretville died Thursday, April 21, 2005, at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

Born Nov. 2, 1932, in Yonkers, Dot was the daughter of Clarence W. and Edith M. (Dougherty) Sims.

She married Peter G. Wright on March 9, 1957, at Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers. He died Feb. 13, 2003.

Dot moved to the area from Warwick in 1977. She was a homemaker and loved country music. She traveled to Nashville several times. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, including her beloved grandchildren.

Dot and her husband, Pete, operated the Frontier Restaurant in Dunraven for 25 years. They met many friends there and enjoyed visiting and spending time with them. Dot also enjoyed her beloved dog, Shalah.

She is survived by one son, Keith, and her daughter-in-law, Wanda Wright; one daughter, Dori, and her son-in-law, Haywood Buerge Jr.; and two grandchildren, beloved Kaitlin and Kellsey Buerge.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 25, from the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Calling hours are from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Contributions in memory of Dorothy Wright may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Burial will be in the Sanford Cemetery, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Karen E. Root

WEST EDMESTON — Spring committal services for Karen E. Root, formerly of West Edmeston, who died Jan. 25, 2005, will be held graveside at 11 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2005, at the West Edmeston Cemetery with the Rev. Don Buck officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Elizabeth M. Shackelton

TREADWELL — Elizabeth M. Shackelton, 89, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

She was born March 2, 1916, in Equinox, Pa., to William and Lillian (Wolslagl) Cummings.

She married John Shackelton in 1935 in Thornbottom, Pa.

John and Elizabeth lived for many years in the Loomis Brook-Trout Creek area and moved to Treadwell in 1947.

She is survived by two daughters and one son, Bette and Don Hall of DeBary, Fla., Bonnie and Dick Keech of DeBary, Fla., and William and Jetta Shackelton of Franklin; a daughter-in-law, Joan Shackelton of Oneonta; 11 grandchildren, Gail Leyden of Sidney, Vicki Bassani of Delhi, Donald and Daniel Ogborn of Rochester, Dale Ogborn of Florida, Elizabeth Carpenter of Franklin, Sean Shackelton of Esperance, Michael Shackelton of Bainbridge, Amy Schermerhorn of North Harpersfield, Michelle Schwenzfier of Clifton Park, and Lisa Shackelton of Albany; 26 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Wilson Cummings of Bennettsville; a sister, Hazel Sheeley of Sidney; and many nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, John, in 1984; her grandson, Gary Hall, in 1999; her son Raymond in 2002; and her six brothers and one sister.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will be held at the Croton Union Cemetery in Treadwell at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, with Nancy Truscott, Deacon of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Delhi, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Dr., Oneonta, NY 13820-1319.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.
