Gladys V. Baker

ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for Gladys V. Baker, 87, of Oneonta, who died March 25, 2005, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2005, in the Elm Row Cemetery, Laurens.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Gladys E. Warner

ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for Gladys E. Warner, who died March 14, 2005, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 25, 2005, in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Robert C. Knorr

DOWNSVILLE — Robert C. Knorr, 71, of Downsville passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Binghamton General Hospital.

He was born April 7, 1934, in Nanicoke, Pa., the son of the late Phineas and Edith (Higgins) Knorr.

Mr. Knorr was educated in Nanicoke High School and Simmons School of Mortuary Science in Syracuse. He had lived in Downsville for 45 years.

He married Sallyann James on May 13, 1954, in Wapwallopen, Pa.

Robert served in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957.

He was a funeral director in Downsville for 45 years. Robert felt that helping people in their time of need was his greatest service.

Robert was a member of the Downsville Lions Club, Downsville Fire Department, Walton Lodge No. 0559 F&AM, Chamber of Commerce and James S. Moore American Legion Post No. 167. He was the founder of the Downsville Emergency Squad.

Mr. Knorr is survived by his wife, Sallyann of Downsville; sister-in-law, Lois J. Veal of Annapolis, Md.; son, Wayne Robert and wife Pat (Anderson) Knorr; daughters, Debora Ann and husband Nick Spencer of Houston, Texas, Gail Parsons and Thomas Washburn of Apalachin, and Linda and George McKee of Downsville; grandchildren, Robert C. Parsons, David and Melissa Knorr, Erin McKee, Natasha and Amber Spencer, Linda Stickle and Christy Washburn; great-grandson, Jared Knorr; and great-granddaughter, Amber Stickle.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at the Knorr Funeral Home, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 25, at the Knorr Funeral Home, Tannery Road, Downsville, with the Rev. John Wall, Father Donahue and Joseph Upole officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the church of your choice in Mr. Knorr’s name.

Helen Foote Lewis

ONEONTA — Helen Foote Lewis, 92, of 60 Ford Ave., Oneonta, formerly of Bainbridge and Clearwater, Fla., passed away peacefully April 22, 2005, at the Oneonta Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.

Helen was born Feb. 10, 1913, in Coventryville, the daughter of the late Robert and Harriet Morrison Foote.

She was a 1931 graduate of Afton High School, completed the course at Binghamton Business School and was employed by Afton High School. She met and married her late husband, Randolph E. Lewis, on July 1, 1939.

She became a homemaker and mother, returning to the work force in the mid-1950s through the early 1970s. She was employed by the Bainbridge-Guilford School District, NBT of Norwich and Borden’s Chemical Company. Retiring in 1974, she and Randy moved to Clearwater, where she lived until her return to Oneonta in July of 2003.

Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Ruth Foote Stark.

She was an avid crossword-puzzle fan, loved baseball and the New York Yankees, enjoyed gardening, and was a firm believer in giving back what she received.

She held many council and committee positions in her former retirement community, and was well-known for her interest in helping others.

Randy was the "love of her life," and together they educated and inspired their five children to become productive members of society.

Helen is survived by her children, Ann L. Enright and her husband, Dennis, of Oneonta, Mary Lewis Budine of Canandaigua, Cynthia Lewis Avice of Lusby, Md., Robert F. Lewis of Clinton, and Kathryn G. Lewis of Wilton, Conn.; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Budine and his wife, Gillian, of Irving, Mass., Marc Budine and his wife, Robyn, of Coral Springs, Fla., Scott Budine of Arlington, Va., Dennis Michael Enright II and his fiancee, Dr. Amy Gutman, of Shreveport, La., Elizabeth Enright Allen II and her husband, Wayne, of Franklin, and Sean P. Enright of Dallas, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Aaron, Emma, Taylor and Mattie Jane Budine; and one nephew, Robert Stark and his wife, Sonja, of Sun City, Fla.

The kindness and care she received by the staff of the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is deeply appreciated by her family.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Helen’s memory to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel in Sidney.

Carl Lane

WINDHAM — Carl Lane, 86, of Windham died Saturday, April 23, 2005, at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson.

Born on Jan, 8, 1919, in Lanesville, he was the son of the late Eli and the late Leota (nee Dolan) Lane.

He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Aplin, and brothers Lee Aplin, Willard Lane, Jerry (Bud) Lane, Albert Lane and Clarence "Larry" Lane.

He is survived by his wife, Henrietta (nee Beach) Lane, Windham; daughters, Lois Melin and son-in-law, George, South Kortright, Sandra Mattice and son-in-law, Larry, Oneonta, and Carol Garraghan and son-in-law, Guy, Ashland; son, Terry Lane and daughter-in-law, Nancy, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sisters, Amelia Layman, Ashland, and Freda Peck, Maplecrest; brother, Clifton Lane, York Harbor, Maine; grandchildren, Debra White, Suzanne Van Houten, Troy Mattice, Jason Mattice, Tonya Harman, James Garraghan, Kristen Garraghan, Shannon Garraghan, De Etta Lackey, and Jared Lane. Also survived by 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Lane held several occupations. These included: Greene County Legislature for District No. 7 from 1976 through 1981, dairy farmer, town of Ashland supervisor, justice of the peace in Ashland, member of the Board of Supervisors for Greene County, a school bus driver and custodian for WAJ Central School District. He was also a volunteer fireman for the Ashland Fire Company and a member of the Ashland Community Church.

His hobbies included playing baseball and golf when he was younger. He was an avid Mets fan and always rooted for his team.

Carl was well-known for his loving kindness and gentle ways and was always willing to be of help and service to others around him. He always enjoyed and appreciated nature around him by planting trees and feeding the birds and keeping his home grounds perfect to see. You couldn’t ask for a better neighbor and friend, and most people took a liking to him immediately. He will be missed by many, especially his family.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, April 25, 2005, at Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at the Ashland Community Church, Route 23, Main Street, Ashland, with the service conducted by the Rev. Ellen Oliveto. Interment will be immediately following in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Ashland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made in his memory to the Ashland Community Church or the Ashland Rescue Squad, would be greatly appreciated.

William C. Mettler

LAKE RONKONKOMA — William C. "Bill" Mettler Sr., 60, of First Street, formerly of Sherburne and Franklin, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 21, 2005, at his home.

Born on May 10, 1944, in Sherburne, he was a son of Russell and Neva Puller Dewey and was a graduate of Sherburne Central School.

He was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam conflict, and a member of the American Legion posts in Sherburne, Norwich and Franklin.

Bill was a heavy-equipment operator at the South Shore Boat Yard on Long Island for many years.

He had previously been married to the former Joyce Wilcox.

Surviving is his companion, Norma Savage; his mother, Neva Dewey of Sherburne; five sons, Bill (Beth) Mettler of Morrisville, Kenny (Julie) Mettler of Walton, Donny Mettler of Sherburne, Billy Joe (Julie) of Davenport, and Brian (Amanda) Mettler of Blanchester, Ohio; a daughter, Nicole Bennett of Bainbridge; a stepdaughter, Rhiannon Savage of Lake Ronkonkoma; three sisters, Janice (David) Bassett of Smyrna, Margaret (Charles) Hubbell of Clinton and Katherine (William) Johnson of Sherburne; a brother, Gene (Marlene) Mettler of Kent, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A companion and the mother of two of his children, Beverly Carmen, predeceased him in 1979.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2005, from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 3 Preston St., Earlville, followed by interment in the Earlville Cemetery.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Legion Post No. 876, South Main Street, Sherburne, NY 13460 or the American Legion Post, 29 Sheldon St., Norwich, NY 13815.

Funeral arrangements are by the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home.

John C. Leis

ONEONTA — John C. Leis, 52, of Oneonta passed away Sunday, April 24, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 11, 1953, in Brooklyn, the son of John Leis and Edith (Kopf) Kovalczuk.

He worked as a manager in the maintenance department at Southside Mall in Oneonta for many years and most recently worked as a salesman at Pickett Building Materials in Oneonta.

He was an avid outdoorsman. He especially enjoyed fishing and camping.

He is survived by his mother, Edith Kovalczuk of Scotia; ex-wife, Ida Shambo of Scotia; and their two children, daughter Amy Shambo of Orlando, Fla., and son Brandon Shambo of Scotia; as well as many cousins.

He was predeceased by his father in 1983.

The family would like to give a heart-felt thanks to both the Hospice and medical staff that helped with John’s care and well-being during the last few months.

There will be no calling hours. A private burial will be at a later date at the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Shirley J. Ocepa

BUTTERNUTS — Graveside committal services for Shirley Josephine Ocepa, 71, who died Feb. 22, 2005, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, with the Rev. John Burns officiating at the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

Ralph A. Purchell

MOUNT UPTON — Ralph A. Purchell of Mount Upton passed away peacefully Sunday, April 24, 2005, at Valley View Nursing Home in Norwich.

He was born the son of the late George C. and Melissa C. (Hull) Purchell in Roxbury.

Ralph married Evelyn Bouton at the home of her family in East Delhi. She predeceased him April 8, 2004.

He was employed by the Amphenol Corp. in Sidney for several years.

Mr. Purchell was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbors.

He is survived by his niece, Evelyn and Milton Comfort, Florida; caregivers, Linda and Thomas Estelle, Mount Upton; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Edna Purchell Nacaratto; two brothers, George H. and Woodrow Purchell; and a stepsister, Ruby Sterling.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, at the funeral chapel with the Rev. David Masland of the United Methodist Church of Sidney officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Sidney.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Janet Utter

LEBANON, Mo. — Janet Utter, 85, of Lebanon, Mo., formerly of New York state, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, at the home of her daughter.

Janet was born in Franklin on May 25, 1919, the daughter of Ray and Lelia Lambert Elderkin.

Janet was of the Protestant faith.

Janet married George B. Utter on Nov. 22, 1935.

Mrs. Utter worked most of her life with her husband, George, as office manager for the Utter Trucking Company. They also owned the River Street Restaurant in Oneonta from 1961 to 1968.

Janet is survived by her three sons, Robert B. Utter Sr. and his wife, Kay, of Treadwell, Ronald E. Utter and his wife, Ann, of Oneonta and Lawrence A. Utter and his wife, Carol, of Oneonta and Myrtle Beach S.C.; three daughters, Katherine J. Smith and her husband, Larry, of Hunlock Creek, Pa., Doris J. Anglehart and her husband, Gary, of Lebanon and Cheryl L. Lawyer and her husband, Michael, of Schenevus; two sisters, Arlene Roe, East Meredith, and Virginia Booth, Pontiac, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ray Elderkin and Lelia Lambert Elderkin; and her husband, George B. Utter, in September of 1980.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Ozark Area Hospice, Lebanon, Mo. 65536 or Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral services are under the direction of Thieme-Shadel-Hicks Funeral Service at Colonial Chapel.

Shannon D. Folster

WEST FULTON — Shannon Danielle Folster, 28, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 23, 2005, at the home of her sister, Heather, on West Fulton Road.

She was the daughter of Frederick Folster of Winder, Ga., and the late Marion Alice Johnson Griffen, who died Dec. 15, 2004.

Shannon was the sister of Heather (Stephen) Lacey of West Fulton and Maxwell and Arin Folster of Middleburgh; granddaughter of Marion K. Johnson of Marietta, Ga., and the late Daniel Johnson, and Robert Finster and Phyllis Folster Finster of Cobleskill, and the late Robert Folster; and aunt of Hailey Lacey and Nathan Folster of West Fulton. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held for Shannon and her mother, Marion Alice Johnson Griffen, at the Delanson United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. Monday, June 6, 2005. Interment will be in the Esperance Cemetery.

Contributions in Shannon’s memory may be made to the Shannon Danielle Folster Memorial Fund, 410 West Fulton Road, West Fulton, NY 12194.

Arrangements are by the White-Van Buren Funeral Home, Delanson.

Ella Mae Gorham

NORWICH — Ella Mae Gorham, 71, of Golden Age Apartments passed away April 20, 2005, at Chenango Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Franklin on Feb. 7, 1934, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Oles) Potter.

She graduated from Oneonta High School and then worked for a short time for the New York State Gas and Electric Company.

On May 31, 1953, in Elm Park Church in Oneonta, Ella Mae married William R. Gorham while he was on leave from the service. She then joined her husband in Germany. Upon discharge from the service, they lived in Oneonta and eventually moved to Florida for two years before returning to Oneonta in 1969. In 1972, they moved to Norwich.

Ella was a member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, William of Norwich; a son, William Gorham III and his wife, Kim, and their two children, Ashlee and Amber, of Whitney Point; two brothers, James Potter and his wife, Margo, of West Oneonta and Charles Potter and his wife, Grace, of Hobe Sound, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Jean Potter.

There are no calling hours. Private graveside services will be held in Cook Cemetery in West Oneonta with the Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, officiating.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Gorham may be made to the memorial fund of the Broad Street United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by the Wilson Funeral Home.

Frank Kukenberger

COOPERSTOWN — A service of committal and burial for Frank Kukenberger Sr., 89, who died Feb. 26, 2005, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Index with Deacon Randy Velez of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Eugene E. Wells

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Eugene E. Wells Sr., 71, of Springfield Center passed away April 25, 2005, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born June 5, 1933, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, the son of the late Edward and Margaret (Smith) Wells.

On April 23, 1955, he married Mary Lou Quinn at the Presbyterian Church in Cherry Valley.

After graduation from Springfield Central School, he farmed with his grandparents before owning his own farm.

In 1960, he began a 33-year extended career in the surgical research department at Bassett Hospital. As supervisor of surgical research, he worked closely with Dr. Blumenstock and Dr. Thomas during the pioneering days of heart and bone marrow transplants.

As a devoted father, he was involved in many activities with his children, including Little League, Pop Warner football, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and served as a Sunday school teacher. He was an elder at the First Presbyterian Church in East Springfield and served as town of Springfield supervisor for 19 years.

After his retirement from Bassett, he became active in county affairs and was elected county representative of District No. 9. A 12-year member, he was chairman of the Health, Education and Agriculture Committee. He was also chairman of the Special Negotiating Committee and a member of the Administrative Committee.

He was an avid outdoorsman. With family and many friends, he shared good times, including hunting, golfing, fishing, gardening and bowling.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Mary Lou Wells; four children, daughter Shirley Dangl and her husband, Jon, of Hartwick, son Eugene (Bud) Wells and his wife, Linda, of Goodyear Lake, son Jeffery Wells and his wife, Paula, of West Winfield, and daughter Kathy Koch and her husband, Wayne, of Glenmont. Gene has six grandchildren, Colby Wells, Vanessa Wells, Melissa Johnson, McKenzie Koch, Sophia Koch and Amanda Koch; and one great-granddaughter, Jazlyn Lawton. He is also survived by three brothers, Richard and Gladys Wells of Sylvester, Ga., James and Sue Wells of Richfield Springs and Gerald and Elsie Wells Jr. of Burlington Flats; sisters, Virginia and Edward Ray of Richfield and Betty and Charlie Long of Ft. Worth, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Eugene was a beloved husband, father, friend and outgoing community member. His smile, wit, compassion and caring attitude will be greatly missed.

There will be public calling hours from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Cherry Valley.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, in the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, with Pastor Ron Fralick officiating.

Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Wells’ memory may be made to First Responders-Springfield Fire Department, Springfield Center or the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
