Marian A. Collins

HOBART — Mrs. Marian A. Collins, 75, formerly of Hobart, currently of Cobleskill, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born March 20, 1930, in Nelliston, the daughter of Earl G. and Pearl M. (Chase) Alpaugh.

On June 25, 1950, she married Donald H. Collins in the United Methodist Church, Cherry Valley. He predeceased her in 1998.

She was a 1948 graduate of Cherry Valley Central School and worked for the Cherry Valley Central School in food service until 1977, Naylor Company, Morris, and the Hidden Inn, South Kortright.

Survivors include two sons, Wade D. Collins of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Paul A. Collins of Fort Plain; grandchildren, Peggy K. Collins and Max J. Collins; sisters, Lillian Timer of Mount Vision and Edith Morse of Oneonta; sister-in-law, Mary Alpaugh of Cobleskill; and a brother-in-law, Arthur Collins of Lenox, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Brian and Mark Collins; a grandson, Nate Collins; and two brothers, Clyde and Earl Alpaugh.

There will be no public calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Marian’s memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Sanford Green

COOPERSTOWN — Sanford Green, 92, a longtime resident of The Meadows and more recently Otsego Manor, died April 21, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare.

Sanford was born May 1, 1912, in the Utica area, the son of Sanford and Mabel (Barrd) Green.

Sanford, who had developmental disabilities, resided in various institutions under the care of the state of New York since 1936. He initially resided at the Rome State School, later at the Broome Developmental Facility, and for the past 23 years he has resided at The Meadows and Otsego Manor.

The caregivers at these institutions became Sanford’s family and they truly enjoyed his always-present smile and his pleasant and happy demeanor.

Sanford was a "soft-spoken, gentle soul" who loved to socialize and tell "his stories." He loved to watch TV, particularly the animal and weather channels. He also loved to color and he was especially fond of his daily coffee and snacks.

Sanford is survived by no known immediate family, other than his friends and "family" at Otsego Manor.

Funeral services for Sanford will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home on Route 28 in Milford with the Rev. John Young officiating. The funeral home will be open from noon until the time of the service so that Sanford’s friends and "family" can visit.

Burial will immediately follow the service in the Milford Cemetery, Milford.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those who so desire make a contribution in Sanford’s memory to The Otsego Manor’s "Resident Activity Fund," care of The Otsego Manor, 128 Phoenix Mills Cross Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Brett J. Ferrando

FLY CREEK — Brett J. Ferrando, 19, of Fly Creek died early Tuesday morning, April 26, 2005, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown after valiantly battling a long illness.

He was born May 15, 1985, in Le Cheney, France, a son of Jean-Marc and Joan (Keller) Ferrando. Brett came to the United States at 19 months and settled with his family in Cooperstown.

He attended Cooperstown Central School and throughout the years was active in many extracurricular activities. During his high school career, he played on various soccer teams and in his senior year was the captain of the varsity team. He was also captain of the wrestling team and was a member of the track team. In addition, he was a Student Council representative, a member of SADD and the National Honor Society, as well as being involved in the Science Olympiad, Outward Bound, school musicals and the senior play.

He graduated with the class of 2003 at Cooperstown Central School and had been accepted at the State University of New York at Buffalo as a Buffalo Scholar, where he planned to major in anthropology and pre-med.

In recent years, he had taken up the sport of fly fishing and was especially good at tying flies.

Brett was a very special person. His courage in dealing with his illness was an inspiration to many. Throughout it all, he maintained a quirky sense of humor. Brett was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Brett is survived by his mother, Joan Ferrando and her husband, Vladimar Melnichenko, of Fly Creek; his father, Jean-Marc Ferrando and his wife, Veronique, of Orgeval, France; his sister, Cecile Ferrando of Stony Brook, Long Island; his paternal grandmother, Jeannette Ferrando of Pan, France; an aunt and uncle, Renee and Michael Gold of Fly Creek; and numerous close family members.

A service of remembrance and a celebration of Brett’s life will be held later this summer.

Should friends so desire, expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, may take the form of memorial gifts to Friends of Bassett-ICU Nursing Education, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Donna Morlano Fink

TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. — Donna Theresa Fink, 57, of Taylorsville, N.C., died at her home Monday, April 18, 2005, surrounded by her loving family.

Donna was born Nov. 29, 1947, the daughter of Evelyn Frazier Morlano and the late John James Morlano of Sidney.

She was a 1966 graduate of Sidney Central High School and married Harvey Fink Jr. of Bainbridge on April 1, 1967.

A member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Hickory, N.C., she was employed at East Junior High School in Alexander County for eight years, where she was hand-picked to be a teaching assistant, mother figure, disciplinarian and character model for highly at-risk students. For the past seven years, she successfully owned and operated Sparkle and Shine Cleaning Service.

Donna was a woman of great faith and regardless of circumstances, rich or poor, she treated everyone fairly, with respect and dignity. She was happiest when her family and friends surrounded her and she will be remembered for embracing life and death with courage and openness.

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Harvey Fink Jr. of Taylorsville; her mother, Evelyn Morlano of Sidney; her daughter, Kim, and her husband, Eric; her sons, John and his wife, Holly, and Shawn and his wife, Angie; seven grandchildren, Randall, Roxanna, Ryan, Alyssa, Tayler, Holden and Tyler, all of Taylorsville; three sisters, Barbara Bush and husband Douglas of West Oneonta, Deborah Morlano of Sidney, and Renee Teale and husband Bruce of Sidney Center; and several dear aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family received friends Friday, April 22, at the Alexander Funeral Home. A funeral Mass followed at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Hickory, N.C.

Burial followed in the Hiddenite Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Alexander County, 50 Lucy Eckerd Lane, Taylorsville, NC 28681.

Dwane A. Cornell

WORCESTER — The committal service for Dwane A. Cornell, 45, who passed away Feb. 24, 2005, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester with the Rev. Susan Strang officiating.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Rosemary D. Morehouse

RICHMOND, Va. — A graveside committal service for Rosemary D. Morehouse, who died in Richmond, Va., March 11, 2005, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2005, in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ira Germond

MANORKILL — Spring interment for Ira "Roger" Germond, who passed away Jan. 19, 2005, will be at noon Saturday, May 7, 2005, in the Manorkill Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to meet at the cemetery.

Barbara Kunsela

DELHI — Graveside services for Barbara Mowitt Kunsela, 88, formerly of Delhi, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30, in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, with the Rev. Patricia Lawrence Shafer officiating. A reception will follow at the home of Mrs. Kunsela’s daughter, Lynn Abarno, on the Back Hobart Road, Stamford.

The widow of William R. Kunsela, former SUNY-Delhi president, Barbara passed away Dec. 29, 2004, in Edmonds, Wash.

Her gentle and quiet spirit was both adventuresome and full of humor, and she will be remembered by family and friends as a woman of strength, generosity and courage.

Memorial contributions to the Delhi College Foundation will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Eric K. Wolven

OTEGO — Eric K. Wolven, 57, of Otego passed away peacefully at home April 27, 2005. The cause was complications from PSP (progressive supranucular palsy) from which he had been suffering for more than two years.

Eric was born in Hawaii on Nov. 16, 1947, and was raised in Fulton.

In 1964, at 17 years old, he entered the Jesuit Order (The Society of Jesus) as a novice and was ordained in 1976 after receiving his Master’s in Divinity from Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass. Before that, he taught English at Fordham Prep in the Bronx from 1970 to 1971, and in 1973, received an M.A. in English from Seattle University. He received his master’s degree in social work from Fordham University in 1982. He was also an assistant pastor at St. Catherine of Sienna Church in Riverside, Conn., from 1977-1982.

From 1982 to 1988, he studied at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy in New York City after which he received a certificate to practice psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.

Eric and his life partner, Stephen V. Baldwin, moved from New York City to Otego in 1988. He worked for the Delaware County Mental Health Clinic from 1988-1990 as a clinical social worker. From 1990 to September 2003, Eric worked for the Otsego County Mental Health Clinic, first as supervising clinical social worker and finally as Otsego County Deputy Director of Community Services.

Eric was the son of Celia Cortini, who survives, of Fulton and Benjamin Wolven (deceased).

He is survived by his life partner, Stephen V. Baldwin of Otego; a brother, Makaala Wolven of the Hague, Holland; his stepfather Joseph Cortini; and two stepbrothers, Joseph Cortini Jr. and Kimo Cortini, all of Fulton.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005, at St. Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor, officiating

Immediately following the Mass, hospitality will be offered at St. Mary’s Parish Center in which family and friends are invited.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert W. Halstead

EAST MEREDITH — Robert W. Halstead, 66, of East Meredith passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at his residence.

He was born April 24, 1939, in Oneonta, the son of Raymond and Virginia (Howard) Halstead.

He married Mary Jester on Oct. 18, 1986, in East Meredith.

For a period of 44 years, Bob was an over-the-road truck driver, working primarily for TRL Trucking out of Pittston, Pa. He retired in 2004.

He served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958.

Bob enjoyed sports, especially football and NASCAR racing. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and friend to many.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Halstead of East Meredith; his children, Penny Briggs and her companion, Steve MacClintock, of East Meredith, Billy Halstead and his wife, Edie, of Davenport Center, Melissa Halstead and her companion, Kevin Wood, of Franklin, Kenny Halstead of Franklin, Matthew Maison and his wife, Jenn, of Laurens, and Jennifer Maison and her fiancee, Lauren, of Fairfield, Pa.; nine grandchildren; his sisters and brothers, Charlene Toombs, Tom Halstead, Raymond Halstead and Carol Westcott, all of Laurens; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be a gathering for family and friends to celebrate the life of Bob Halstead at the East Meredith Fire Station at 6 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005.

Memorial contributions may be made to the East Meredith First Responders or the East Meredith Fire Department.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ellen B. Douglas

SIDNEY — Ellen B. Douglas, born Jan. 1, 1946, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 26, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Ellen worked as a sales representative and ad designer at the Tri-Town Newspaper in Sidney for more than 15 years.

She was a very loving, giving and caring woman who adored her family and friends. She was loved deeply and she will be missed dearly by all.

She was predeceased by her father, Charles Bogart.

She is survived by her mother, Elizabeth Bogart of Sidney; three daughters and their families, Heather Jones and her husband, Eric, and their children, Kristopher and Jordan, of Sparta, Tenn., Tiffany Douglas and Jason Novak and their children, Garrett, Joshua, Lindsey and Abigail, of Sidney, Shannon and Kevin Robinson of New Berlin; and her sister, Kathleen and Donald Bartholomay. She is also survived by very beloved, lifelong friends Ingrid Oakley of Corning and Elizabeth Brock of Downsville.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, in Paige Cemetery in Downsville. Following the service there will be a luncheon at the United Methodist Church of Sidney Fellowship Hall at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Downsville Historical Society.

Elizabeth C. Cole

TREADWELL — Elizabeth "Bette" C. Cole, 89, of Treadwell died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at the Oneonta Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Jan. 1, 1916, in Delhi, the daughter of Robert and Irene (Wilson) Currie.

Bette married her loving husband, Alton C. Cole, on July 22, 1939, in Delhi. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Bette was employed as a grade school teacher for several years in the Gilboa and Treadwell schools. She stopped teaching in 1951 and served as secretary and treasurer for the Treadwell Lumber Company, a family business. She gave up the position in 1996.

Bette was very active for many years in the Treadwell Community Club and also served as president of the 6th District Federation of Women’s Clubs. She and her husband were members of the West Delhi Community Church and the Delhi College Golf Course.

She is survived by two sons, James (Barbara) of Wells Bridge and Robert (Joan) of King William, Va.; grandchildren, Sharon Cole, Juliann Cole, Melissa (William) Vaughan, Thomas Goodrich, Glenna (Patrick) Carey and Sandra Goodrich; great-grandchildren, Abreanna Goodrich, Beth Ann Carey, Zacharia Carey, Ashley Goodrich, Devon Bedient, Ethan Ferguson, Connor Ferguson and Logan Thomas; a brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. John and Donna Currie; and several nieces and nephews.

Bette was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Alton C. Cole, on Jan. 7, 2004; and a brother, James Currie.

Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with her brother, the Rev. John Currie, officiating.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, at the funeral home.

Burial will take place in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions are asked to be made to the Treadwell Emergency Squad, the Treadwell Fire Department or the Treadwell Community Club, in loving memory of Elizabeth C. Cole.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Frances D. Cannon

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Frances D. Cannon, 84, of Nelson Avenue in Cooperstown died Tuesday evening, April 26, 2005, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital.

She was born Oct. 23, 1920, in Boston, Mass., a daughter of Jean Vincent and Marguerite Frances (Lally) Dethier.

In 1942, Frances graduated from Radcliffe College with a bachelor of science degree in biology and took a research position at Vanderbilt University Medical School. Here she met her future husband, Joe Hamilton Cannon, and they married April 22, 1948, in Nashville, Tenn.

In 1954, the Cannons moved to Cooperstown, where she was employed as a research assistant at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital. Through her work with the Lake and Valley Garden Club, she initiated the Village of Cooperstown Tree Program.

Frances is survived by one son, Douglas H. Cannon, M.D., of Cooperstown; and two daughters, Nancy E. Zajac of Slingerlands and Patricia M. Olson of Juneau, Alaska.

She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Joe Hamilton Cannon, M.D., who died Nov. 5, 2004; and their daughter, Deborah J. Cannon, who died May 14, 1970.

Burial services will be private and at the convenience of the family in Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts way be made to Cooperstown Tree Committee, PO Box 346, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Jean Knapp

COOPERSTOWN — Jean (Emma Imogene) Turner Knapp, a longtime resident of Cooperstown, died April 27, 2005, at her home after a brief illness.

She was born in the Thanksgiving Hospital, Cooperstown, on Aug. 1, 1909, the daughter of George Lathrop Turner and Nellie Waffle Turner.

She married Ernest (Brig) Knapp on March 20, 1935, in Christ Episcopal Church. Mr. Knapp died Oct. 19, 1993.

Mrs. Knapp was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, a founding member of the Church Flower Committee, an honorary member of the Cooperstown Women’s Club, a member of the Lake and Valley Garden Club and the Cooperstown Art Association and co-founder of the SPCA Thrift Shop.

She was a former member of the Tri-County Antique Dealers Association and owned The Frog Hollow Antique Shop.

She is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Roxanne Knapp Kelley of San Diego, Calif., Bonnie Knapp Bryans of Cazenovia, Tonja and Stephen Curry of Litchfield, Conn., and Sara and Gerald Gault of Litchfield, Conn.; a nephew, Richard C. Earl of Pebble Beach, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Bart Kelley, Eliza Kelley Lewis, Sarah Kelley Mortland, Thomas T. Bryans, Ned F. Bryans, Amanda B. Bryans, Emily S. Bryans, Stephen J. Curry and Ellen S. Curry; and six great-grandchildren, Ann Lewis, Sarah and Sheridan Curry, Emma, Abby and Erica Mortland.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Christ Episcopal Church, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Samuel Abbott officiating.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

Burial will be at the Fly Creek Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in her name to the Friends of Bassett, Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Services.
