Carol J. DeVaul

WHITESBORO — Carol J. DeVaul, 61, formerly of New Berlin, died unexpectedly Thursday, May 5, 2005. Carol passed away in her Whitesboro home, where she had resided since 1998.

Carol was born in Denville, N.J., on Dec. 4, 1943, the daughter of James George Shultis and Barbara Jean (McGuire) Shultis.

Carol lived most of her life in the New Berlin area as a homemaker. Carol loved nature and incorporated that love in the many crafts that she enjoyed. Carol’s eye for detail and the beauty she created inspired the students that she shared her arts with.

Carol had a unique way of making people feel loved and special, and that will be missed by all that knew and loved her.

Carol is survived by her husband of 27 years, Mr. Ronald Edward DeVaul; one brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Joann Shultis; and one sister and brother-in-law, Stephan and Janice Truz. Her children are daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Leonard Munday of Duanesburg, daughter and son-in-law, Tracey and Wayne Snyder of Delhi, son, Brian and daughter-in-law, Jessica Dunham of Milwaukee, Wis., daughter and son-in-law, Jamie and Richard Elsmore of Arizona, son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Michelle DeVaul of California. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Maggie Wust, Samantha Wust, Leonard Munday, Sara Munday, Tabetha Knapp, Kayliegh Knapp, Brandon Snyder, Alana Dunham, Madison Dunham, Christopher Elsmore and Crystal Elsmore. Carol had two great-grandchildren, Lilly Wust and Xavier Franco.

There will be a small wake to celebrate Carol’s life for the family Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at Carol’s home in Utica.

Flowers may be sent to 80 Denton Ave., Whitesboro.

Margaret Duncan

ROSEBOOM — Margaret F. Duncan, 79, of Roseboom and formerly of Cedarhurst and Wantagh passed away Thursday, May 5, 2005.

She is survived by her loving son George Duncan and his wife, Patricia, of Roseboom.

She was predeceased by her parents, Clara and Alexander Stark; and her youngest son, Paul M. Duncan.

A private memorial service and internment was held at Greenfield Cemetery, Hempstead.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Sadie Oravetz

MARGARETVILLE — Sadie Oravetz, 89, of Margaretville passed away April 3, 2005, in Cooperstown.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the United Presbyterian Church in New Kingston with the Rev. Daniel McCollister officiating.

Burial will be in New Kingston Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

William H. Haney

FRANKLIN — A graveside committal service for William Howard Haney Sr., who died Feb. 6, 2005, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005, in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Earl Smith

SPRINGFIELD — Committal services with military honors for Mr. Earl Smith, 95, who passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 13, 2005, in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating. Burial will follow.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Clesson Crandall

SIDNEY — Graveside memorial services for Mr. Clesson Crandall, 91, who passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005, in the Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, with Ted Duesler, chaplain of the Cherry Valley Fire Department, officiating. Burial will follow.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Rita Ryan

CHERRY VALLEY — Graveside committal services with burial to follow for Mrs. Rita Ryan, 89, who passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2005, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 13, 2005, in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Thomas R. Fowler

ARKVILLE — Thomas R. Fowler, 71, of Arkville passed away Saturday, May 7, 2005, at his residence in Arkville.

Tom was born May 20, 1933, in the Bronx, the son of Thomas W. Fowler and Cecelia Baessler.

Tom was a custodian and bus driver for Margaretville Central School, retiring 10 years ago. He was an avid fisherman.

Tom is survived by one aunt, Josephine Harvey of California; several cousins; and friends, Kenneth and Barbara Palmer of Union City, N.J.

Calling hours will be from 3 until 4 p.m., at which time the funeral service will be held Friday, May 13, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. James J. McDevitt officiating.

Committal services will be private.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Azilyn Calabrese

TROUT CREEK — Azilyn Sue Calabrese passed away at birth, Monday, May 2, 2005, at Albany Medical Center, Albany.

She is survived by her mother, Ashlee Calabrese; great-grandmother, Carol Arquette; grandmother, Cindy Calabrese; aunt, Jacki Calabrese; uncle, Terry Calabrese Jr., all of Trout Creek; and aunt, Kaitlyn Coons, Walton.

Friends and relatives are invited to call from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where services will be held at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Peggy Fabrizio officiating.

Esther M. Dewey

SIDNEY — Esther M. Dewey, 92, of Sidney passed away Sunday May 8, 2005, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 9, 1912, daughter of the late George W. and Ruth Olmstead Fitch in Merrickville.

Esther married John M. Dewey on June 30, 1934, in Sparrow Brush. He predeceased her in 1984.

She was a cook for the Sidney Senior High School and Golden Valley Sports Camp for the summer. Esther was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Unadilla, where she played the organ for 50 years.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John Thomas and Brenda Dewey, Unadilla; daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Steven Anderson, Sidney; grandchildren, Benjamin and Jennifer Anderson, Summit, Jason M. Dewey and Michael A. Dewey, Unadilla; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by her brother, George W. Fitch.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 15, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 16, 2005, at the funeral chapel.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bibles for Children Inc., Route 41 North, Afton, NY 13730 or the Sidney Fire Department or Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Leo I. Dibble

WATERLOO — Leo I. Dibble, 78, a longtime Waterloo resident, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Geneva Memorial Hospital.

The son of James and Rena (Constable) Dibble, Leo was born Jan. 2, 1927, in Bloomville. Growing up there, he attended the South Kortright Central Schools.

On July 14, 1973, he married Jackie Ammerman, and they made their home in Waterloo. Over the years, Leo worked in construction and was employed by Lee’s Construction Company, from which he retired with 23 years of service. He had worked as a foreman for many of those years.

Leo is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jackie Dibble; his brothers, James Dibble of Delhi, Everest Dibble of Gilbertsville, Donald Dibble of South New Berlin and Charles Dibble of Zephyrhills, Fla.; his sister, Viola Hiatt of Orlando, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Leo was predeceased by his brothers, Marshall, Clarence, Lloyd, William and John Dibble; and by his sisters, Margaret Carmody and Elva Jurjens.

A memorial service for Leo will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the Coe-Genung Funeral Home, 46 West Main St., Waterloo. Committal will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery of Waterloo.

There will be no calling hours.

Elna P. Deighton

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Graveside services for Elna Parish Deighton, who passed away Dec. 20, 2004, while visiting her family in Raleigh, N.C., will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 13, 2005, in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Frank Koren

EAST WORCESTER — A memorial service for Frank Koren, 87, who passed away Feb. 10, 2005, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the East Worcester United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the East Worcester Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Justina M. Ivansik

WORCESTER — A graveside memorial service for Justina (Stena/Christine) Ivansik, 84, who passed away Dec. 17, 2004, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005, in the East Worcester Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Vincent T. Price

MORRIS — Vincent T. Price, 48, of Morris and Dietrich, Idaho, died May 7, 2005, at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City after a long illness.

Vince is survived by his mother, Elnora Price of Dietrich, Idaho; his brothers, John Price of Idaho and Jerome and Robert Price of Arizona; a sister, Luanne Christensen of Idaho; and companion, Tina Walsh of Morris.

Vince will be remembered as a regular at the Oneonta Farmers’ Market, helping out as a vendor for Asbury Gardens. He loved his time spent at the farmers’ market and the garden center and will be missed by all who knew him and his whimsical, willing nature.

Vince will be buried near the graves of his father and grandfather Price in Eureka, Calif.

There will be a memorial service at a later date at the garden center, at which time a tree will be planted in his memory.

Arrangements are by New York Mortuary in New York City.

Robert Rockefeller

DELHI — Robert L. "Bob" Rockefeller, 42, of Delhi passed away unexpectedly Sunday, May 8, 2005, at his home.

The son of the late Silas T. and Margaret E. (Hall) Rockefeller, he was born Feb. 8, 1963, in Delhi and was a 1982 graduate of Delaware Academy.

In earlier years, Bob worked with his father, until his death in 1985, and was subsequently employed with the town of Delhi Highway Department; McIntosh Tree and Landscaping Service, Bovina; and currently, for several years, with Wissahickon Spring Water Inc., Davenport.

A lifelong Delhi resident, he will be remembered as a friendly but quiet and unassuming man.

Surviving are his sister, Joyce A. Rockefeller of Gainesville, Ga.; two nieces, Virginia Rockefeller and Kristi Hall; uncles and aunts, Clarence and Irma Hall of Treadwell, Agnes and Quinten Weaver of Voorheesville and Helen Rockefeller of Sidney; and numerous cousins.

Friends are invited to call 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 12, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Paul Meisel, with burial following in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to Delhi Fire Department EMS will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Beulah B. Sloan

GILBERTSVILLE — Beulah B. Sloan, 82, of Gilbertsville died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich, with her family at her side after a long illness.

She was born in the town of Butternuts on Dec. 10, 1922, the daughter of Alice M. and John G. Birdsall. She lived most of her life in Gilbertsville, where she graduated from Gilbertsville Central School in 1940, being the first student to graduate with a music diploma.

She married John B. Sloan in June 1940 in Gilbertsville, where they lived most of their lives and raised their children.

She was known for her unselfish, loving and caring ways. She showed the utmost devotion to her family and friends. She loved music, books, gardening and family gatherings.

She joined the First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville in 1935, where she sang in the choir and was active in the Cradle Roll and the Women’s Circle for a number of years.

Beulah was a longtime member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She worked for a period of time at Scintilla in Sidney during the 1950s.

She and her family moved to Orlando, Fla., in the mid-1950s before settling for the past 40 years back in Gilbertsville among her many friends and family.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, John; a son, James Sloan; a grandson, Eric Nesbitt; and a brother, Howard Birdsall and Sumner Birdsall.

Beulah is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Bernt Hansen of Zephyrhills, Fla.; and two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Mary Sloan and Stephen and Myra Sloan, all of Gilbertsville. She was also blessed by 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 15, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Barbara Schwartz and the Rev. Randolph Palada officiating.

Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Gilbertsville Fire Department or Gilbertsville Emergency Squad in Beulah’s memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.
