Grace E. Toombs

LAURENS — Grace E. Toombs, 92, of Laurens died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at the home of her son Donald in Laurens.

She was born April 2, 1913, in New Lisbon, the daughter of Charlie and Elizabeth Ball.

She married Ceylon A. Toombs on April 5, 1930, in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Berlin. Mr. Toombs died Dec. 11, 1996.

She was a lifelong Laurens area resident. Grace worked at the Mica Plant for a period of time, but for the most part she worked on the family farm with her husband.

Grace is survived by her two sons, Francis Toombs of Laurens and Donald and his wife, Charlene, Toombs of Laurens; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Merritt (Marjorie) Toombs of Davenport Center; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Her daughter, Mrs. Marion Upright, who died Jan. 25, 1985; her son, Merritt C. Toombs, who died Jan. 29, 1995; and her sisters Cecil, Elsie, Beatrice and Bernice, predeceased her.

Funeral services for Grace E. Toombs will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Harry Myers, pastor of the Laurens Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Elm Row Cemetery, Laurens.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home on Friday, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Grace E. Toombs.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Leon E. Lord

DELHI — Graveside services for Leon E. Lord, 82, of Hamden Hill Road, who died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005, in the Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville, with the Rev. Nancy Truscott officiating.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Clifton Teeple

DAVENPORT — Clifton Teeple, 81, of Davenport died early Thursday, May 12, 2005, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford, where he had been a resident for the past two years.

Clif, as he was most commonly called, was born June 11, 1923, in Kortright Township to L. Ray and Leona (Boyd) Teeple. He lived his entire life at the family farm before going to live at Kirkside Assisted Living Residence in Roxbury, and then at Robinson Terrace at Stamford.

Clif graduated from Charlotte Valley Central School and then remained on the farm after his father’s death in 1943.

He gained most enjoyment through the years playing his guitar and in his earlier years the violin.

Clif was predeceased by his father and mother, as well as a sister, Margaret, and a brother, Clyde.

He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Geraldine Teeple of Davenport; and nephews, David Teeple of Utica, Mark Teeple of Clark Mills, and Christopher Teeple of Pocono Lake, Pa.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Richard A. Dykstra officiating. Calling hours will be held from 1 p.m. until service time Monday.

Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Thorman Nordberg

LAURENS — Graveside committal services for Thorman E. Nordberg will be at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, May 14, in Laurens Cemetery, with the Rev. Paul Messner, pastor of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, officiating.

Mr. Nordberg died March 20, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Brandon Gaines

ONEONTA — Brandon Kyle Gaines, 17, of Oneonta passed away unexpectedly Saturday, May 7, 2005, in Desloge, Mo.

Brandon was a sophomore at North County High School. He had attended Unatego Junior-Senior High School.

He was an avid fan of soccer, baseball, wrestling, basketball and fishing.

He is survived by his mother, Patty Gaines (Paul) Hahn of Desloge; father, Keith Leggett and Lisa Piazzola of Oneonta; sister, Ashley Gaines of Lugoff, S.C.; grandmothers, Ellen Leggett of Columbus, S.C., and Martha Wigger of Bonne Terre; grandfathers, Larry Wigger of Bonne Terre and Robert Gaines of Lugoff, S.C.; great-grandparents, Chris and Ethel Pedersen of Sidney, and Helen Manser of Bonne Terre; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his grandfathers, Donald Leggett and Doss Manser; and great-grandfather, Harm Gaines.

A memorial service will be held for all family and friends at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 15, 2005, at the Oneonta Assembly of God, 1667 county Highway 48, Back River Road, Oneonta, and will be presided over by Danny Legault. Refreshments will be served after the service.

David A. Thomas

TREADWELL — David A. Thomas, 55, of Treadwell passed away unexpectedly Thursday, May 12, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 10, 1949, in Indiana, Pa., the son of Jesse Mac and Thelma Maxine (Carnahan) Thomas.

He married Mary Elizabeth Cunert on Dec. 31, 1987, in Greenwood Lake.

David served in the United States Marine Corps from 1969 to 1971.

For many years, David was a crane operator working out of International Union of Operating Engineers No. 825 of Springfield, N.J., and before that was affiliated with Local 66 out of Monroeville, Pa.

David enjoyed painting outdoor scenes and working around his property. He was an avid NASCAR fan. He especially loved the special times spent with his children.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Thomas of Treadwell; his father, Jesse Mac Thomas of DuBois, Pa.; his children, Caitlin and Michael Thomas of Treadwell; a sister, Diane Endress of DuBois, Pa.; as well as several aunts, uncles, one niece, one nephew, one great nephew, and several cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Edward Stone, and his mother.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Treadwell Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

George W. Norton

MARYLAND — George W. "Lucky" Norton, 79, of Maryland passed away Thursday, May 12, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born Feb. 20, 1926, in Oneonta, the son of George and Myrtle (Scofield) Norton. He married Juanita Beams in 1955. She passed away in 2002.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a sergeant in the United States Army. He was also a Purple Heart recipient.

For many years, George was an equipment operator on area construction projects. He worked for more than 30 years for E.J. Necrason and Sons.

George was not a joiner, but especially enjoyed the time spent with his friends at the Duke Diner, as well as watching softball and walking in the park.

He is survived by his children, George W. Norton Jr. of Oneonta, Randal L. (Dorothy) Norton of Otego, Bonnie (Cliff) Osborne of Starr, S.C., Connie (Lynn) Johnson of Hartwick, and Terrance W. Norton of Maryland; a sister, Ruth (Red) Sherman of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; his grandchildren, Kate and Gregory Norton, Randal Jr. and Kevin Norton, Christopher, Jennifer and Michael Johnson, Clifford Osborne Jr., and Starlene Swartz; and two great-grandchildren, Celina Cintron and Hanna Osborne.

He was predeceased by a great-grandson, Jacob Swartz, and one sister, Shirley Decker.

There will be no calling hours, and services will be private. A gathering for family and friends will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the Oneonta Moose Club.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

DELHI — Graveside services for Matthew Scott Ladlee, 20, of the town of Meredith, who died March 21, 2005, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2005, in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, with Allison Bookhout officiating.

BLOOMVILLE — Graveside services for Joyce H. McIntosh, 65, of Bloomville, who died March 16, 2005, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 16, 2005, in the Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville, with Elder John Newton officiating.

Sarah I. Cole
MARYLAND — Sarah Isabelle Cole, 82, of Maryland went to be with her Lord on Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the Albany Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 19, 1922, in Cobleskill, the daughter of Barney and Lillian (Sutton) Brown. She married Burton Cole on July 27, 1956, in Unadilla. Mr. Cole died Jan. 5, 1994. Isabelle was raised in Cobleskill and graduated from Cobleskill High School, class of 1942. She worked for a time at the GE plant in the Albany area before becoming a licensed beautician and operating a shop out of her and Burton’s home on Goodyear Lake. After her children were of school age, she was employed at Astrocom Electronics Inc. in Colliersville. After her retirement, she and Bert spent their winters in Florida, where they made many new friends, until he passed away. Isabelle lived out her life surrounded by her family at her home in "Happy Valley." She was a member of the Susquehanna Senior Citizens Group. She was a member of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church. Isabelle often enjoyed luncheons with a special group of Astrocom retirees. Isabelle is survived by her daughter, Beth Spence, and husband Jim of Goodyear Lake; her son, Bryan Cole and his wife, Karen, of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Jana Gutierrez and husband Edward of Milford, Rick Spence and friend Clare VanEtten, Heather and Travis Cole; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Alexander and Abigail Gutierrez, Michael and Kegan Spence and many, many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother, Joseph Brown and his wife, Evie; her sisters, Lucy All, Anne Gregory and brother-in-law Ralph; her sister-in-law, Virginia Brown, all of Cobleskill, a sister-in-law, Jane Brandt of Oneonta and a brother-in-law, Mel Hintz of Endicott. She was predeceased by her parents, Barney and Lillian (Sutton) Brown of Cobleskill; her brothers, Clayton, Paul, Barney, Richard, Matthew and John; her sisters, Angela, Helen, Marguerite and Edith. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Rodney E. Johnson, pastor of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Milford Center Cemetery, Milford Center. Isabelle’s family will be present at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 17. Erna K. Richtsfeld
DELHI - Erna K. Richtsfeld, 82, a longtime Elk Creek, Delhi (town of Meredith) resident, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter in Worcester, and went to be with her Lord on Saturday morning, May 14, 2005. The youngest of nine children of Henry W. and Adele (Hohmann) Kathmann, she was born June 17, 1922, in Soltau, Germany. The family came to the United States in 1924, settling in Sugarland, Texas, where they were sharecroppers. Moving to Delaware County in 1926, they purchased a farm on Elk Creek Road, thereafter known as the "Kathmann Homestead." She married Marcus "Mark" Richtsfeld on Oct. 4, 1946, when they purchased the family farm from her parents, operating the dairy together until 1981. They produced maple syrup thereafter, and Erna was known as "The Maple Cream Queen." She also found joy in the cultivation of her asparagus bed. Employed as a nurses aide at O’Connor Hospital (1965-78), in later years she provided care for the elderly in her home which also served as a Delaware County "safehouse." A lady who gave of herself, expecting little in return, Erna found satisfaction in helping those in need.After her husband’s death Oct. 24, 1994, Erna sold the farm to Robert Kathmann in 2000, intending to keep the homestead in the Kathmann family. A devout Lutheran, she was a life-member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi (of which her parents were founders), and active in its Ladies Aid Society. She leaves behind her two daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and the Rev. Paul Messner, with whom she had been living in Worcester for the past seven years, and Carol and Clark Gilbert, often returning to spend weekends at their home in Delhi; grandson Joshua, and his wife, Sally, Messner, and granddaughter Rebekah Messner; a sister, Dora Benjamin of Delhi; sisters-in-law, Ruth Kathmann of Cornville, Ariz., and Gertrude Kathmann of Delhi; numerous nephews and nieces, including Dave and Beverly Fuller, Patti and John Svegl, Stan and Joanne Fuller, Grace and Chuck Dietzman, and Wayne Benjamin, who were "special" to Erna, some of whom still reside on the original Kathmann Homestead; also, her dog "Casey" and cat "Skimbleshanks." She was predeceased by siblings, Fritz, Herman, Bill, Gus, Henry, Marie and Hermina. Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, by the Rev. John Priest and the Rev. Richard Niebanck, with burial following in the East Meredith Cemetery.Memorial contributions made to Immanuel Lutheran Church will be appreciated.Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Jeanne E. Palen
MARGARETVILLE — Jeanne Elizabeth Palen, 84, died Friday, May 13, 2005, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital.She was born Dec. 10, 1920, in New Kingston, the daughter of Ruthven Robertson and Lillian Russell Robertson. Jeanne attended grade school in the New Kingston Village School and graduated from Margaretville High School in 1936, at 15. She graduated from Vassar Brothers Hospital School of Nursing in Poughkeepsie in 1943. Jeanne worked as a registered nurse in the Margaretville Hospital, where she met, fell in love with and married Dr. Gilbert M. Palen on Dec. 31, 1945, at her parents’ residence in New Kingston. Dr. Palen predeceased Jeanne on May 17, 1986. Jeanne became a lifetime member of the Margaretville Hospital in 1943 and was an active worker and supporter of the change and progress from the old Margaretville Hospital on Orchard Street in Margaretville to the new Margaretville Memorial Hospital on Route 28. While raising a family in the 1950s and 1960s, Jeanne worked as an RN alongside her husband, who maintained a very busy medical practice in Margaretville and the surrounding area. In the late 1960s, when Dr. Palen was the director of the State University College Health Center in Oneonta, Jeanne worked as an accredited records technician at the health center. Jeanne’s husband supported her in all her endeavors. Jeanne had a lifelong love of horses from her childhood in New Kingston. In the 1960s, she and her husband bred and raised standardbred trotters and pacers in Margaretville and Prattsville and raced them at Saratoga Raceway. Gil and Jeanne’s horse-racing partnership in Startin Farms was one of the great business pleasures of their lives. Jeanne loved her birthplace, New Kingston. The old-sod roots of Scotland and the ancestry and history of New Kingston always had a cherished place in her heart. The people of New Kingston remained vivid in her love of place. As a child, Jeanne fell in love with the nature of the New Kingston Valley. The rolling green fields of the farms of her childhood, the wooded hills and animals of all sorts, especially horses, dogs and cats, were major shaping forces in her life. Jeanne was a lifetime member of the New Kingston-Margaretville Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder and sang in the choir. Jeanne is survived by her son, Pete; her daughter-in-law, Cassandra Finnis-Palen and granddaughter, Katherine Elizabeth Palen, all of New Kingston. Donations in Jeanne Palen’s name may be made to the Margaretville Memorial Hospital and the Margaretville-New Kingston Presbyterian Church. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Anna H. Verity
WORCESTER – Anna H. "Ann" Verity, 80, of Worcester passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare of Schoharie County in Cobleskill. She was born Nov. 24, 1924, in Decatur, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Skerl) Hren. Ann married Arthur E. Verity in Worcester on Dec. 18, 1942. Ann and Art owned and operated a dairy farm on Tuscan Road for 15 years. Ann was a lifelong resident of the Worcester area. She worked as a waitress and manager at many of the local eating establishments, including Walt’s Restaurant, The Worcester Inn, Ann’s Diner, Twin Springs Diner and the Northup Diner. Ann worked at the Nutrition Site in Worcester for many years. She was also the Worcester town tax collector for several years. Ann dedicated her life to volunteering and helping others. She was an active member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church. Her activities at the church included the Alter Rosary Society, bookkeeping, bingo and church dinners. Ann also sat on the Maple Grove Cemetery Association board for several years. She was a member of the East Worcester Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the Worcester Women’s Bowling League. During World War II, Ann volunteered as an aircraft spotter in the Worcester area.Ann is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann, and husband Chuck Holmes of Decatur; one son, Arthur E. Verity of Worcester; a granddaughter, Jennifer, and husband Sam Space of Providence R.I.; one brother-in-law, Joe Nelson and his wife, Karen, also of Worcester; many nieces, nephews, cousins and several very special friends. Ann was predeceased by her husband, Arthur; three brothers, Frank, Anthony and John Hren; four sisters, Frances and Mary Hren, Mildred Mowers and Angelina Nelson. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Friday, May 27, at the St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding, Celebrant.Interment will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester. Floyd R. Burhans
NORWICH — Floyd R. "Dick" Burhans, 86, of Golden Age Apartments, Norwich, passed away Friday morning, May 13, 2005, at Chenango Memorial Hospital. The son of William and Ethel (Holcomb) Burhans, Dick was born in Catskill on Sept. 16, 1918. His mother passed away when he was a young boy. Dick was raised by his father and stepmother, Mildred Holcomb Burhans, who was his mother’s sister. Dick grew up in the Windham area, where he attended the local schools. He married Elinor M. Davidson on April 25, 1953, in Oneonta.Dick was a 25-year employee of NYSEG, having started his career as a meter reader. He worked in Stamford, Walton, Oneonta, and Norwich, and while in Norwich he was chief of the garage. He retired at the age of 62. Considered a wonderful husband, father, grandpa, and great- grandpa, Dick always enjoyed his family. He was a hard worker but enjoyed kidding around with family and friends. He was also a diehard Yankee fan. Dick is survived by his daughter, Diane Lamb, of Norwich; his son, William Burhans and wife Jackie of Memphis, Tenn.; his grandchildren, Brian and Stacey Burhans of Memphis and Jeffrey Lamb of Norwich; and one great-grandchild, Cade. Also surviving are his sisters, Elizabeth Herdman of Kingston and Margaret Daum of Clinton, Conn., along with several nieces and nephews. Dick was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Elinor Burhans; and by his three brothers, Robert, Charles Stanley, and William Burhans. Funeral services for Dick will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, will officiate.Interment will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery of Oneonta.Friends may call from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the R. Doris R. Wilbur
SIDNEY — Committal services for Doris Rumsey "Doddie" Wilbur will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in Halsey Valley Cemetery in Lockwood. She died March 14, 2005.Arrangements are by the C. H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Margaret L. Sutliff

WALTON — Margaret Louise Sutliff of Walton, a lifelong residen, died Friday, May 13, 2005, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi. She was 84.

Mrs. Sutliff was born Dec. 15, 1920, in Walton to William and Charlotte George Henderson. She graduated from Walton Central School in 1937.

She married Monroe Sutliff in Oneonta on April 20, 1946. He predeceased her on Feb. 27, 1981.

Mrs. Sutliff was a machine operator for Bendix-Amphenol in Sidney. She was with the company for 30-plus years before retiring in 1980. Mrs. Sutliff was a lifetime member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Walton.

Her hobby was Early American decoration, including country- tin painting, stenciling, reverse painting on glass, painting on clocks and glass. She also taught painting classes and traveled to Dewitt for painting classes.

She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Setford of Walton, her nieces and nephews, Donna McIlwee of Fishkill, Carol and Nancy LaTourette of Trout Creek, James Birdsall and Ralph Henderson of Walton, Dave Setford of Nineveh, and Floyd Birdsall of Hamden. She is also survived by many grand- and great-grand nieces and nephews; and one great-great-grand niece.

Other family members who died earlier include her brothers Ralph, Robert and Alfred, sisters Freda Birdsall and Dorothy Henderson, nephew Donald Birdsall and niece Arlene Setford.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, May 16, at the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Bruce and East streets, Walton. Interment will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Mrs. Sutliff’s family received friends on Sunday, May 15, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, Walton.

Donations to the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Walton in Margaret’s name would be appreciated.
