Anne S. Chadwick

BINGHAMTON — Anne S. Chadwick, 85, formerly of Ballston Lake and Winter Springs, Fla., passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton.

Anne was predeceased by her husband, Martin Maybee Chadwick.

Anne is survived by her children and their spouses, Martin and Carol Chadwick of Virginia, Richard and Lorraine Chadwick of New York, Anne Marie and David Ochs of Illinois, Christopher and Sarah Chadwick of New York and Candice Peters of Ohio; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Anne was a longtime member of Calvary Episcopal Church, Ballston Lake, where a funeral will be held at the convenience of the family.

Anne, a retired associate professor of education at the State University College at Oneonta, was a nationally recognized educator and derived great pleasure from actively volunteering in her community.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children, 100 West Harrison, North Tower Suite 500, Seattle, WA 98119.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 44 Exchange St., Binghamton.

Robert B. Phillips

HARTWICK — Robert Bruce Phillips Sr., 82, a longtime Hartwick resident, passed away suddenly Friday evening, May 27, 2005, at his home.

A son of Giles and Susie M. (Dayton) Phillips, he was born March 19, 1923, in Oneonta. Raised on the Mill Creek, he graduated from Otego High School with the class of 1940.

After a brief period of employment at Scintilla, he entered the United States Army Air Force and proudly served his country during World War II. He was involved with the European Theatre of operations and was stationed in both France and Germany until being honorably discharged in 1947, holding the rank of corporal.

Upon his return, he met his future wife, Nadine Beach, and they married Sept. 6, 1947, in a ceremony at her parents’ home in Hartwick. That same year Bob and his father, Giles, entered into a partnership and began operation of Phillips Lumber Company Inc. in Hartwick. He later became president, a position he held until his retirement in 1988.

Bob possessed a strong faith in the Lord and was a pillar of the Hartwick Christian Church, serving for many years as a deacon. His faith was also demonstrated through his loyal service with the Gideons. A member of the Oneonta Camp of the Gideons since 1962, he took pleasure in placing Bibles where they were needed.

In a similar way, he enjoyed serving the Hartwick community. In the 1950s he served as president of the Hartwick School Board, was a director of the Hartwick branch of Key Bank and also was a member of the Hartwick Historical Society.

In 1982, he was honored as the "Hartwick Citizen of the Year." Throughout the years, Bob and his wife enjoyed traveling together, especially in their Airstream travel trailer. They were members of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International and had traveled as far away as Alaska with their Airstream in tow.

Remembered by his family as a loving husband and devoted father, Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nadine; their children, Mrs. Barbara Thorn and her husband, John, R. Bruce Phillips Jr. and his wife, Lucia, and James C. Phillips and his wife, Robin, all of Hartwick, and Mrs. Janet Welch and her husband, Chris, of Greene; seven grandchildren, John Thorn Jr. of Texas, Jeffery Thorn of Hartwick, Jill Thorn of Rotterdam, Melissa Phillips of Hartwick, Sarah Welch of Endicott, Edward Welch of Rochester and Sydney Welch of Greene; five great-grandchildren, John Mark, Bethany, Keren, Jesse and Charity Thorn; two sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Lattimer and her husband, Everett, of Glenmont and Mrs. Ellen Barraco and her husband, Anthony, of Pittsford; one brother, Donald E. Phillips and his wife, Rheta, of Colonial Heights, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Laverne H. Saxer, pastor of the Hartwick Christian Church, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Hartwick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today, May 31, 2005, when Bob’s family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Hartwick Christian Church, PO Box 65, Hartwick, NY 13348-0065, the Oneonta Gideon Camp, PO Box 955, Oneonta, NY 13820-0955 or the Hartwick Emergency Squad, PO Box 208, Hartwick NY 13348-0208.

Hildegard A. Ernst

OTEGO — Hildegard Anna Ernst passed away Saturday, May 28, 2005, at her son’s home in Williamson.

She was born July 14, 1923, in Muskau, Poland, the daughter of Richard and Martha (Endler) Schacht. She lived in Poland until 1941 and then immigrated to Boesdorf-Plon, Holstein, Germany.

On Oct. 18, 1947, she married Erich Ernst in Plon. He predeceased her Nov. 18, 2001.

Erich, Hildegard and family then moved to Duisburg and from there immigrated to New York state in January 1957. They first owned a farm in West Laurens and later owned a farm on the Otsdawa Road in Otego. In 1967, they bought the Otego Diner. Later, in 1970, they sold the diner and moved to Rochester for about five years.

Hildegard was a loving wife and mother. She always canned and made preserves, raised chickens and helped with the family farm. She also worked as a housecleaner for Hartwick College and several local families, many of which became family friends. She liked to have picnics, pick berries, crochet, embroider and read. She always enjoyed her TV shows and grandchildren.

Hildegard was a former member of the German-American Club. She enjoyed the Spring Festival and October Festival. She and Erich were wonderful dancers. She always liked to sing and had a very happy disposition.

She was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church, and was a former member of the Otego Eastern Star.

Starting in 1985, in retirement, she and Erich had a winter home in Spring Hills, Fla. They enjoyed the beach, the flea market and the many friends from New York state who lived there.

In recent years, she had been living with her son, Detlef, in Williamson. He gave her loving care and we all appreciate his dedication and that of our friend, Randy.

Hildegard is survived by four children, Hannelore and Ronald Yager of Otego, Herbert and Beverly Ernst of Canton, Ga., Renate and Mark Frailey Sr. of Otego, and Detlef Ernst of Williamson and friend Randy Bitters of Williamson; nine grandchildren, Amy and Jeffrey Gardner of Oneonta, Michael and Andrea Yager of Waleska, Ga., Cory and Kristen Yager of Woodstock, Ga., Nathan Ernst of Canandaigua, Leah and Joseph Welsh of Canandaigua, Shawnee Waters, Heidi and Tom Frederick, Kerri Frailey and Mark Frailey Jr., all of Otego; 10 great-grandchildren, Amethyst Gardner, Liam and Fiona Welsh, Scott and Alyssa Waters, Thomas, Lindsay and Christopher Frederick, Gabriel and Rachel Frailey.

In Germany, she is survived by her brother, Helmut and Irma Schacht of Duisburg; a niece, Barbel and Rolf Hering and family; sister-in-law, Gertrud Schacht; and nephews, Holger Schacht and Norbert Schacht, all of Klein-Meinsdorf; a niece, Gabrielle and Fred Lohrke and their children, Nils and Tobias of Malante.

She was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Gertrud Guse and Herta Hansel; and her brother, Alfred Schacht.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 2, 2005, at the Otego United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Otego.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Barbara Johnson

OAKSVILLE — In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 29, 2005, Barbara Collier Johnson, 68, passed away at the home of her best friend and caregiver, Helen Dane, in Burlington Flats.

Barbara was born Dec. 1, 1936, in New York City, the daughter of Nelson A. and Adell (Cislo) Collier. Raised in New York City, Barbara moved to the Edmeston area at 16 and graduated from Edmeston High School.

She then enlisted in the United States Army and served her country in the Armed Forces until receiving her honorable discharge in 1956. Her life was then devoted to raising her family and caring for their home.

Throughout her life, Barbara maintained a passion for dogs, and she especially loved her two standard poodles, Raven and Addie. For the past 17 years, she owned and operated a dog grooming business, Buttons and Bows, from her home on state Highway 28 in Oaksville.

Barbara is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Sharon Malison and her husband, Bob, of Schenectady, and Mrs. Sandra Spezia and her husband, Ron, of Reno, Nev.; and two grandsons, Zachary and Joshua. She is also survived by her best friend and caregiver, Helen Dane, of Burlington Flats; and Helen’s daughter, Susie Dane.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 6, 2005, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sundar Samuel, pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are with the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Robert J. Koslow

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Robert Joseph Koslow, 78, of South New Berlin died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at his home.

He was born June 5, 1926, the son of Stanley Koslow and Annette (Johnson) Koslow.

He served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal, the Europe Africa Mid Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He worked as a Nassau County police officer until his retirement in 1978. He was a finish carpenter and also had operated his own construction company on Long Island. He had resided in South New Berlin since 1978.

Bob married Alberta (Terry) Hagendorf on Sept. 27, 1980, in the town of Butternuts. He was a member of the South New Berlin American Legion post.

He is survived by his wife, Alberta (Terry) Koslow, of South New Berlin; and many dear friends.

There will be no calling hours, and it was Bob’s request that no funeral services be held.

Cremation took place at the Hillington Crematory in Morris.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the American Cancer Society, 5 Oak Ave., Sidney, NY 13838 in his memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Elaine L. Fassett

GANSEVOORT — Elaine L. Fassett, 72, passed away Friday, May 27, 2005, surrounded by family, at Glens Falls Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born Jan. 25, 1933, in South Valley, the daughter of Charles and Bertha (Brodie) Terpening.

On Aug. 5, 1951, she married Lewis E. Fassett in South Valley; he survives.

Survivors besides her husband of 53 years, Lewis E. Fassett, include four children, Bruce, Diane, Leonard and Darlene; eight grandchildren, Christina, Dana Lynn, Paul, Melinda, Casey, Kyle, Josh and Hannah; one great-granddaughter, Madelynne Elaine; two brothers, Dennis and Barry Terpening; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Fassett’s memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Firemen’s Auxiliary.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Rose D. Vitzthum

CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Rose D. Vitzthum, 85, passed away Friday, May 27, 2005, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Utica.

She was born June 7, 1919, in Archbald, Pa., the daughter of Harry and Margaret (Connor) Dougher.

On May 14, 1966, she married Larry Vitzthum in East Orange, N.J.; he survives.

Survivors besides her husband, Larry Vitzthum of Cherry Valley, include two sisters, Anne Callaghan of Nutley, N.J., and Joan Hart of New Providence, N.J.; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 2, 2005, in St. Thomas Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. John Roos officiating. Burial will follow in Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

George W. Walrath

COOPERSTOWN — A graveside service, with military honors, for George William Walrath, 83, of Cooperstown, who died Dec. 24, 2004, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2005, in the Hartwick Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Karl A. Erikson

GROSVENOR’S CORNERS — Mr. Karl Anders Erikson, 87, formerly of Grosvenor’s Corners Road, Central Bridge, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville, where he had resided since last year.

Mr. Erikson was born July 7, 1917, in Schenectady, a son of Anders and Elda (Steiner) Erikson.

He had resided in the town of Carlisle since 1972 and had previously lived in Howes Cave. He attended Cobleskill High School.

For many years, he was a self-employed dairy farmer in Howes Cave until selling in 1972. He then worked for various farms in the area until beginning his career at the former Cobleskill High School in the maintenance department and also as a bus driver. He retired from the school in 1982.

He was a member of the former Schoharie Valley Grange. He also had been a member of the Carlisle Fire Department and Rescue Squad, along with the Fire Police.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys (Monthie) Erikson, whom he married Sept. 24, 1939; his children, William (Elaine) Erikson of Mt. Joy, Pa., Kathy (Pete) Anderson of Sharpsburg, Md., and Beth (Michael) Smith of New Kingston; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Funk, Ryan Erikson, Keith Erikson, Michael Anderson, Lori Wiles, Ashton Sanford and Kirstie Sanford; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Erikson of Cobleskill, Mildred Monthie of Central Bridge and Marguerite Monthie of Schoharie; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2005, at the Langan Funeral Home, 195 North Main St., Central Bridge. A calling hour will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. before the funeral service at the funeral home. Mr. Erikson’s granddaughter, Kimberly Erikson-Funk, will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Bramanville Prospect Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Erikson to the Carlisle Fire Department and Rescue Squad, PO Box 73, Carlisle, NY 12031.

Dorothy Egleston

SIDNEY — Dorothy Egleston, a resident at Willow Point Nursing Home, Vestal, and a former resident of Star Route, Sidney, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2005, in Vestal.

She was born June 17, 1924, in Paterson, N.J., the daughter of the late Frederick and Myrtle Fredericks Bishop.

On Aug. 6, 1951, she married Raymond J. Egleston in Elkton, Md. He predeceased her April 12, 1983.

Dorothy was a retired inspector for the Amphenol Corporation of Sidney. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter No. 502, Sidney; I.A.M. and A.W. Local 1529, Sidney; Tri Town Hikers Club; and was a life member of the Sidney Boat Club.

She was a volunteer at the Delaware Valley Humane Society and the Next-to-New, both in Sidney.

She is survived by two daughters, Pamela Egleston of Orange Park, Fla., and Sara and David Emms of Binghamton; two grandchildren, Jessica and Cory Emms of Binghamton; and a sister, Vera Felter of Sidney. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A brother, Charles R. Bishop; and a sister, Marjorie Roff, predeceased their sister.

Funeral and committal services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2005, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Friends are invited to call from 5 p.m. until services at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Women of the Moose will conduct memorial services Thursday evening at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Masonville Emergency Squad, Masonville, NY 13804.
