George F. Kinsella

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. — George F. Kinsella, 73, of Casa Grande, Ariz., and formerly of Endicott, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 20, 1931, in Brooklyn, the son of the late George A. and Inger K. (Mogensen) Kinsella.

George was married to Mary P. Hotaling on Feb. 13, 1960, in Sidney.

He was a graduate of Jefferson Central School and a graduate of the State University of Technology at Alfred.

He served in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957 and was a retired advisory engineer of I.B.M. Corp. in Endicott.

He made his home in Casa Grande, Ariz., for the last seven years.

George was a member of St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church of Casa Grande; Knights of Columbus, 3rd and 4th degree; Council No. 1839 of Endicott; and a life member of the Endicott Elks Lodge No. 1977.

He was very loved by family and will be missed by them and also will be missed by his dog, "Alie."

George is survived by his wife, Mary P. Kinsella of Casa Grande; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Kinsella of Glen Burnie, Md.; his grandchildren, Jessica and Kris Kinsella of Glen Burnie; his brother and sister-in-law, William and Barbara Kinsella of Unadilla; his sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and James Westcott of Unadilla; a brother-in-law, Anton Streifeneder of Maryland; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Marion Streifeneder.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2005, in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, with the Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to RTA Hospice Foundation, 1675 E. Monument Plaza, Casa Grande, AZ 85222 or the ALS Association Arizona Chapter, 5040 E. Shea Boulevard, Scottsdale, AZ 85254.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Wayne R. Sullivan

FLY CREEK — Wayne R. Sullivan, 48, died Monday afternoon, May 30, 2005, at his home in Fly Creek Valley.

Born at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown on Aug. 12, 1956, Wayne was a son of Richard J. and Agnes Cogrove (Harrington) Sullivan.

In 1974, he graduated from Cooperstown Central School and met his future wife, Ann E. Post, in 1975. On June 18, 1977, Wayne and Ann were married at Cooperstown United Methodist Church.

Throughout his life, Wayne was employed as a dishwasher at the State University College at Oneonta, as an orderly at The Meadows, on area farms, and by a shoe factory in Norwich. The majority of his working life, though, was spent as a landscaper, a career that began with Lenny Richards. Wayne later went into business for himself and was assisted by his son, Jeremy.

Wayne was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed spending time with his family. Hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobile and four-wheeler riding were all favorite pastimes, especially when he would share in doing them with his son, Jeremy. Wayne also enjoyed taking his family for rides in the car, and his brother, Dale, fondly recalls the rides just he and his brother would take.

His sense of humor and ability to make people laugh were traits that his family and many friends whose lives he touched will always remember.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 27 years, Ann of Fly Creek; his mother, Mrs. Agnes Sullivan of Otsego Manor; his mother-in-law, Evelyn Wheeler of Canaan, Conn.; one daughter, Melissa Van Leuven of Fly Creek; one son, Jeremy Sullivan and his girlfriend, Lynn Birdsall, of Fly Creek; a cousin whom Wayne considered as his daughter, Jennifer Lyons; one grandson, Richard Van Leuven; the family dog, Pepper; one brother, Dale N. Sullivan, and his companion, Susan R. Quaif, of Cooperstown; one aunt, Lydia Sullivan of Leonardsville; and many, many special cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2005, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas Deer, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until service time Friday, when Wayne’s family will be in attendance.

Burial will follow in the Hartwick Cemetery.

Per Wayne’s request, it is desired that flowers not be sent and that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 1 Birchwood Drive, Department FH, Oneonta, NY 13820 or to a trust fund to be established for Wayne’s grandson, Richard Van Leuven, in care of Ann Sullivan, 2110 county Highway 26, Fly Creek, NY 13337.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Maria C. Celentano

ONEONTA — Maria C. Celentano, 85, formerly of Blauvelt as well as Delhi, and most recently Oneonta, died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta.

She was born May 6, 1920, in New York City, the daughter of Joseph and Angelina (Laele) Aruta.

Maria moved to the Delhi area from Blauvelt in 2001.

She loved sewing and making dolls and donated many of the dolls to local area organizations.

She is survived by her brother, Frank Aruta, and his wife, Ruth, of Hamden; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Her brother, Mark Aruta, predeceased Maria.

There will be no public calling hours.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 2, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Edward J. Ryan officiating.

Burial will follow in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Philip Cartwright

COBLESKILL — Philip H. Cartwright, 86, of state Route 10 died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill after being stricken at home.

Mr. Cartwright was born July 20, 1918, in Middleburgh, the son of David and Katherine (Lawyer) Cartwright.

A graduate of Middleburgh Central School, Mr. Cartwright later lived and worked in New York City as a construction worker for Barnaby Brothers & Company before retiring to the Cobleskill area.

Mr. Cartwright served his country during World War II, was decorated and discharged from the 2011th Ordinance Company of the United States as a sergeant after serving in the European and North African theaters of operations.

Mr. Cartwright was a member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Cobleskill, the American Legion Post 1261, the Colonie Elks Lodge 2192 and the local chapter of the AARP.

Mr. Cartwright and his wife enjoyed ballroom dancing and were ballroom dance teachers, honorees and participants of the Silver Fox Follies.

He was predeceased by Sylvia M. (Stavrinos) Cartwright, whom he married May 31, 1942, at St. George’s Episcopal Church in New York City.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Charles Masick of Cobleskill; and three grandchildren, Kristen Masick Gleason of Minneapolis, Minn., Stephanie Masick of Stow, Mass., and 1st Lt. Erik D. Masick of Cobleskill.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2005, at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 121 St. Christopher’s Place, Cobleskill. Officiating will be Rector Barbara Hanstine. Friends may call at the church from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday before the service.

Burial with full military honors will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Gerald B.H. Solomon — Saratoga National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, PO Box 300, Cobleskill NY 12043.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, and Palmer & Shaylor Inc. Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh.

Wilma E. Parsons

BAINBRIDGE — Wilma E. Parsons, 86, of Bainbridge passed away Monday, May 30, 2005, at her home.

She was born Aug. 26, 1918, daughter of the late Charles and Pearl Keach Tripp in Afton.

Wilma was employed as a supervisor by American Plastics, Bainbridge, when she retired in January 1981.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bainbridge and was a past member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Bainbridge.

Wilma was always busy making afghans, quilts and sweaters for her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Robert E. Parsons, Bainbridge; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Beverly and Lewis Whitney, Bainbridge, Margaret Himko, Bainbridge, Joyce Scheidegger, Ephrata, Pa., and Barbara and George Yanik, Bainbridge; two stepdaughters, Betty and Neal Reuter, Las Vegas, Nev., and Roberta Behnke, Otego; sister, Dorothy VanDeBogart, Elmira; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her first husband, William Foster; brother, Charles Tripp; and sister, Thelma Austin.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 2, 2005, at the First Baptist Church in Bainbridge with interim Pastor Judy Travis officiating.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, or the First Baptist Church in Bainbridge.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

William T. Burrows

ONEONTA — William T. Burrows Jr., 58, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2005, at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin after a long battle with cancer.

He was born Jan. 20, 1947, in Mount Vernon, the son of William T. Burrows Sr. and Ione Routan.

Billy was a self-employed construction contractor. He also at one time was employed by General Baking Company, Bronx. Billy loved the outdoors.

He is survived by his father, William T. Burrows Sr. of Oneonta; two brothers, Robert Burrows of New Hampshire and Allen Burrows of Oneonta; one daughter, Stacy Burrows; several nieces and nephews; and special friend and companion, Marie Webster of Oneonta.

He was predeceased by his mother, sister and uncle.

At the request of Billy, he was cremated, and the interment in the Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

James Harold Coon

WORCESTER — James Harold Coon, 76, passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, in Glenwood Springs, Colo., after a long illness.

Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to the memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2005, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 155 Main St., Worcester, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, officiating.

Interment will follow in the Cooperstown Junction Cemetery.

Hildegard A. Ernst

OTEGO — Hildegard Anna Ernst passed away Saturday, May 28, 2005, at her son’s home in Williamson.

She was born July 14, 1923, in Muskau, Poland, the daughter of Richard and Martha (Endler) Schacht. She lived in Poland until 1941 and then immigrated to Boesdorf-Plon, Holstein, Germany.

On Oct. 18, 1947, she married Erich Ernst in Plon. He predeceased her Nov. 18, 2001.

Erich, Hildegard and family then moved to Duisburg and from there immigrated to New York state in January 1957. They first owned a farm in West Laurens and later owned a farm on the Otsdawa Road in Otego. In 1967, they bought the Otego Diner. Later, in 1970, they sold the diner and moved to Rochester for about five years.

Hildegard was a loving wife and mother. She always canned and made preserves, raised chickens and helped with the family farm. She also worked as a housecleaner for Hartwick College and several local families, many of which became family friends. She liked to have picnics, pick berries, crochet, embroider and read. She always enjoyed her TV shows and grandchildren.

Hildegard was a former member of the German-American Club. She enjoyed the Spring Festival and October Festival. She and Erich were wonderful dancers. She always liked to sing and had a very happy disposition.

She was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Otego Eastern Star.

Starting in 1985, in retirement, she and Erich had a winter home in Spring Hills, Fla. They enjoyed the beach, the flea market and the many friends from New York state who lived there.

In recent years, she had been living with her son, Detlef, in Williamson. He gave her loving care and we all appreciate his dedication and that of our friend, Randy.

Hildegard is survived by four children, Hannelore and Ronald Yager of Otego, Herbert and Beverly Ernst of Canton, Ga., Renate and Mark Frailey Sr. of Otego, and Detlef Ernst of Williamson and friend Randy Bitters of Williamson; nine grandchildren, Amy and Jeffrey Gardner of Oneonta, Michael and Andrea Yager of Waleska, Ga., Cory and Kristen Yager of Woodstock, Ga., Nathan Ernst of Canandaigua, Leah and Joseph Welsh of Canandaigua, Shawnee Waters, Heidi and Tom Frederick, Kerri Frailey and Mark Frailey Jr., all of Otego; 10 great-grandchildren, Amethyst Gardner, Liam and Fiona Welsh, Scott and Alyssa Waters, Thomas, Lindsay and Christopher Frederick, Gabriel and Rachel Frailey.

In Germany, she is survived by her brother, Helmut and Irma Schacht of Duisburg; a niece, Barbel and Rolf Hering and family; sister-in-law, Gertrud Schacht; and nephews, Holger Schacht and Norbert Schacht, all of Klein-Meinsdorf; a niece, Gabrielle and Fred Lohrke and their children, Nils and Tobias of Malante.

She was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Gertrud Guse and Herta Hansel; and her brother, Alfred Schacht.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 2, 2005, at the Otego United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Otego.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.
