Constance Benner

OTEGO — Constance O. Benner, 91, passed away Feb. 25, 2005, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

Mrs. Benner was born Nov. 19, 1913 in Brooklyn, the daughter of George and Louisa (Rawlings) Bliss.

She married Richard Benner on Oct. 16, 1937. He predeceased her Nov. 9, 1982.

Mrs. Benner was employed at Equitable Insurance Company while living in New York City. In 1951 she moved to Otego. She and her husband also operated a rabbit farm in the late 1950s. Mrs. Benner was a member of the Otego Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by a nephew, Donald G. and his wife, Ruth H. Bliss, of Unadilla; a grandnephew, Douglas and his wife, Carol Bliss, of Oneonta; a grandniece, Christina and her husband, Timothy Moran, of Staten Island; and a dear friend, Anna Smith of Otego.

She was predeceased by her brother, Noel George Bliss of Unadilla, on Jan. 12, 1989.

At Mrs. Benner’s request, she was cremated.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2005, at the Otego Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. J. Edwin Lintern, pastor, officiating.

Contributions may be made to the Otego Presbyterian Church, 16 River St., Otego, NY 13825.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Martin W. Kappel

NORWICH — Martin W. Kappel of Norwich passed away May 31, 2005, in Sidney. He was 51.

Martin was born June 26, 1953, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Herman and Geraldine (Drolet) Kappel.

After graduating from Thornridge High School, he attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater education in 1975. He subsequently moved to Indianapolis, Ind., where he met his future wife, Victoria Calvert. They were married July 1, 1978, in Constableville.

For the next nine years, the couple ran their award-winning theater company, Midsummer Mime Theatre, in Indianapolis, until they moved to Chicago in 1987 to continue pursuing their professional careers.

While in Chicago, Martin directed plays and taught at the college level, eventually becoming Artistic Director of Theatre at the Center in Munster, Ind. He received his Master of Fine Arts in directing and dramaturgy from Roosevelt University (Chicago) in 1999.

After that, the family moved to Norwich when Victoria was named executive director of the Chenango County Council of the Arts. During the last six years, Martin directed and wrote plays, taught workshops, toured his one-man show, was an adjunct professor at Hartwick College and provided lighting and design services to area schools, theaters and dance companies. He also developed a theater outreach and education program for the Sealy Center for Environmental Health and Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Texas.

Martin was a loving husband and father, a man who loved to laugh, and whose passion for theatre and teaching touched many lives.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria; their sons, Julian and Christopher; a sister, Celeste Kappel of Palos Heights, Ill.; brothers, Jerold Kappel of Reston, Va., and Roger Kappel of Ocala, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Martin will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 3, at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich with the Rev. Glenn Mahaffey officiating.

A scholarship fund for the benefit of the Kappel children is in the process of being established. Please direct any contributions to the NBT Trust Department at 52 S. Broad St., Norwich, NY 13815, with checks made payable to NBT and a notation that the contribution is for this fund.

Francis J. Riley

BAINBRIDGE — Francis J. Riley of Bainbridge passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at his home.

He was born March 22, 1920, son of the late Percy and Rose Telford Riley in Wilmington, Del.

Francis was raised with his five brothers and sisters in Holmes, Pa.

He entered the United States Army on Dec. 10, 1942, and served with the 84th Infantry and the 333rd Infantry in Europe during World War II. Francis was awarded the Bronze Star, among other decorations.

He married Margaret Mertz on Feb. 14, 1959, in Oxford. She predeceased him July 19, 1994.

Francis was employed by E.C.D. Bendix in Sidney, and he retired in 1983.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Roseanne and Jim Winn, Bainbridge; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Nancy Davy, Harpursville; grandchildren, Russ and Lisa Davy, New Jersey, Susie and Eric Herrmann, Arizona, Renee Davy, Kirkwood, Daniel Davy, Endicott, Derek Winn, Bainbridge, and Andy Winn, Bainbridge; great-grandchildren, Jasmine Davy, Brendon Davy, Thomas Herrmann, Kristy Mortenson, Cassey Manzer and Tianna Davy; and longtime companion Lady, his dog.

He was also predeceased by a grandson, Thomas Davy.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2005, in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Reginald T. Brown

CHERRY VALLEY — Reginald T. Brown, 62, of Cherry Valley passed away May 31, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, with his family at his side.

He was born Sept. 14, 1942, in Amsterdam, the son of the late Clayton and Ella (Wentworth) Brown.

He married Sue Erwin on Aug. 6, 1962. Reggie was a retired dairy farmer and an avid sportsman.

He loved family and friends and enjoyed many social occasions at his farm. He was also an active member of the Cherry Valley Fire Department for 20 years.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Sue Brown, of Cherry Valley, include two daughters, Jacqueline Hull of Cherry Valley and Emily Yannascoli of Fayetteville; a granddaughter, Olivia Hull of Cherry Valley; a sister, Judith Thorsland of Saratoga Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2005, at the United Methodist Church, 82 Main St., Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating.

A private burial will take place at a later date on the family farm.

Contributions in Reggie’s memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Fire Department, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Ruth Waterman

DELHI — Geneva Ruth Waterman, 91, of Franklin Road, Delhi (town of Meredith), passed away peacefully Monday morning, May 31, 2005, at her home.

The daughter of John Albert "Bertis" and Estella (Jordon) Feasel, she was born April 25, 1914, in La Junta, Colo., moved to Meredith at 7, graduated from Delaware Academy in 1930 and continued her education at Albany Business College.

On Aug. 27, 1933, she married Osman W. Waterman, a union of almost 72 years. Together, they operated their dairy farm until 1981 and have lived there for the past 51 years.

In earlier years, Ruth had been active in the Meredith and Delhi Baptist Churches and the Spring Lake Missionary Society.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Osman W. Waterman; her son, Frank M. (Cynthia) Waterman of Oneonta; two daughters, Arlene (Joel) Kraat-Stark of Whitestone and Mary Edge of Milford, Pa.; four grandchildren, Katherine Bechtold of Westminster, Colo., David Waterman of Cherry Hill, N.J., Natasha Boehner of Orrtanna, Pa., and Karen Coyle of Bridgeton, N.J.; eight great-grandchildren, Jeremiah and Nathaniel Bechtold, Karilynn Waterman, Brianna and Collin Coyle, and Jessica, Jacob and Joshua Boehner; four sisters, Irma Reston of Gilbertsville, Julia Orbacz and Wilma Pitreau of Otego and Carol Cossette of West Endfield, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Lois Carmody.

Friends are invited to call from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, June 6, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral services will be at 2 p.m. John W. Truscott, commissioned lay preacher, will officiate, and burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 116 Main St., Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Dorothy Dibble

EVANS MILLS — Memorial services for Dorothy Eileen (Whitney) Dibble, who passed away Nov. 21, 2004, will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2005, at the Hobart Presbyterian Church, Hobart, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Burial will take place in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart, after the services.

Arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home of Hobart.

Mary L. Adams

STAMFORD — Graveside services for Mary L. Adams, 93, of Stamford, who passed away Jan. 3, 2005, will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2005, in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart, with the Rev. Lorraine Coscia-Ackerman officiating.

Arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home of Hobart.

Arlene M. Schmitt

NORTH FRANKLIN — Graveside memorial services for Arlene Mae (Anderson) Schmitt, who went home to be with her Lord on March 8, 2005, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2005, in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Narendra D. Bhatt

STAMFORD — Dr. Narendra D. Bhatt, 63, of Stamford, a 28-year resident, passed away at his home Tuesday, May 31, 2005.

A retired United States Army S. Army Major, he gave 20 years of service to his country.

He is survived by his wife, Jayantika; sons, Atul and Manish; daughter-in-law, Rashmi; and grandson, Hemin.

Friends may call from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2005, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Funeral services and ceremony will be held at the family residence from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2005. Cremation services will be at 1 p.m. at the Hillington Crematory, 106 Card Road in Morris.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to: VADTAL DHAM MANDIR, Somerset, N.J.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Richard J. Cumm

LAKELAND, Fla. — Richard J. Cumm, 75, passed away Friday, March 25, 2005, at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

He was born July 28, 1929, in Schenectady, the son of Arthur James and Mabel (Horstman) Cumm.

He was a graduate of the Sidney Central School, class of 1946.

He was employed locally as a truck driver, construction worker, and as a machinist with Egli Machine Company.

Richard was an avid fisherman and woodworker. He loved to read, travel and spend time with his family, including his special in-laws.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marie (Peck) Cumm. He is also survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Lori of Cadyville, Jeffery and Cheryl of Jacksonville, Fla., Kevin and Lisa of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Richard and Connie of Masonville, Reginald and Lisa of Plant City, Fla., and Joseph and Heather of Lawndale, N.C.; and by his daughters and sons-in-law, Michele and Del Emerson of Unadilla, Patricia of Clarksville, Tenn., Lori of Shelby, N.C., Judi and Dale Lacey of Marathon, and Jayne and Tony Soule of Margate, Fla. He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Beverly of Tempe, Ariz.; and by 21 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2005, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel in Sidney.

Memorial contributions in Richard’s name may be made to the Masonville Emergency Squad or the Masonville Federated Church in Masonville.

Brian C. Randall

TAMARAC, Fla. — Brian Curtis Randall, 33, of Tamarac, Fla., formerly of Bainbridge, unexpectedly went to be with the Good Lord on Friday, May 27, 2005.

He is survived by his wife of six years, Michelle Randall, and loving children, Kaitlynn and Joshua Randall. He is also survived by his father, David (Jeanne) Randall of Bainbridge; grandmother, Gertrude Randall; mother, Carol (Zeke) Keeney of Sunrise, Fla.; brother, Phillip (Amy) Randall of Chittenango, brother, Ronald (Lorre) Randall of Chittenango, brother, Mark Randall of Tampa, Fla.; sister, Deann Shaver of Sunrise, Fla., sister, Kristina (Steven) Winschel of Manlius; brother, Jack Randall of Bainbridge, brother, Peter (Jina) Keeney of Sunrise, Fla., and brother, Paul (Esther) Keeney of Sunrise, Fla.; five stepsiblings; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Brian was born in Oneida on July 20, 1971. He was a 1990 graduate of Bainbridge-Guilford High School and he attended SUNY Oneonta. He worked as a water purification technician.

Brian was a very generous, loving, thoughtful husband, father, son, brother and uncle.

He was a faithful fan of the Dallas Cowboys as well as NASCAR.

He touched the lives of everyone he knew, and he will be missed but never forgotten.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2005, at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Gilbertsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kaitlynn and Joshua Randall Education Fund, care of David and Jeanne Randall, 614 Parker Smith Hill Road, Bainbridge, NY 13733.
