Carrie L. Bookhout
LAURENS — Carrie Louise Bookhout, 91, of Laurens died Friday, June 3, 2005, at Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.She was born in the town of Burlington on Oct. 25, 1913, the oldest daughter of 13 children of Murray Benjamin and Florence (Stickles) Benjamin.She married Kester D. Bookhout on May 4, 1934, at the Presbyterian Church Parsonage in Laurens. He died Dec. 11, 1995. She and her husband operated the family dairy farm in Laurens for many years.She was a member of the Eastern Star of Laurens, the Burlington Quilting Group, the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital volunteers, and was very active in the Presbyterian Church in Laurens.She enjoyed cake decorating, quilting, painting, crafts and the catering of weddings. She was an accomplished organist and pianist and was truly a lady of many talents.Carrie is survived by her children, a son, Benjamin Bookhout and companion, Sylvia Rozelle, of Laurens; a daughter, Beth Coyle and husband Chris of Central Square; a daughter-in-law, Joan Bookhout of Mount Vision; a brother-in-law, Byron Bookhout and wife Lyn of Dover, Del.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her siblings, Orlo Benjamin and wife Judy, Murray Benjamin and wife Evelyn, Adrian Benjamin and wife Martha, Kenneth Benjamin and wife Sharon, Donald Benjamin and wife Jeanette, Dorothy Bolton, Mildred Stebbins, and Richard Benjamin and wife Pat.Carrie was predeceased by her husband, Kester, who died in 1995; a son, Elvin Bookhout, who died in 1984; a granddaughter, Tammy Bookhout, who died in 1991; a great-grandson, Jonathan Bookhout Dilello, who died in 2002; and a great-granddaughter, Jessica Bookhout, who died in 2001. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Venona, Sidney and Charles.Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today, June 6, 2005, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2005, with the Rev. Harry Myers officiating. Committal services and burial will follow at the Elm Row Cemetery in Laurens.Those who wish may make donations to the Laurens Village Cemetery Association, PO 228, Laurens NY 13796 or the charity of your choice in Carrie’s memory.Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Dorothy B. Smith
WALTON — Dorothy B. Smith, 86, of Walton passed away Friday evening, June 3, 2005, in the Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton, after a long illness.Mrs. Smith was born May 19, 1919, in Loomis Brook, the daughter of the late LeRoy and Mildred Van Akin Budine.On Oct. 27, 1936, she married Robert B. Smith in Hancock. They had a farm on Third Brook Road until 1944, when they moved to the John Hamilton Farm on the Delhi-Treadwell Road and lived there until 1997, when her husband passed away. Dorothy assisted her husband in the operation of the family farm, where she loved the farm life, the outdoors, and took great pride in the cattle she raised. Later she worked for Cadi for 26 years, where she enjoyed working with the students.She is survived by one daughter, Mary A. Dunne of Franklin; three sons, Dr. William G. Smith and his wife, Alice, of Walton, James R. Smith and his wife, Barbara, Ronald E. Smith and his wife, Joyce, both of Delhi; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Marsico of Walton and Ruth North of Franklin; her special friend, Charlotte Szczesh of Walton; several nieces, nephews and cousins.She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, on April 24, 1997; two great-grandsons, Jesse Jordan in 1997 and Noah Smith in 2000; two great-granddaughters, Abigail Smith in 2000 and Emma Leigh Smith in 2002; a brother, Harry Budine; and a sister, Florence Kozlowski.Friends and relatives are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Presbyterian Church, Walton, with the Rev. Dr. James F. Martin officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.Memorial contributions in Dorothy’s memory may be made to United Presbyterian Church, Walton, First Presbyterian Church, Delhi or Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta. Joseph W. Kolka
MILFORD CENTER — Joseph W. Kolka, 80, of Milford Center, formerly of New City, passed away peacefully June 3, 2005, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.He was born May 16, 1925, in Blauvelt, the son of Steven and Helen Kolka. He was one of 11 children.He graduated from Pearl River High School in 1942. He enjoyed playing football in high school and later played semi-pro for the Pearl River Wildcats.He married Vera Meehan on Feb. 1, 1948.Mr. Kolka was a lifelong dairy farmer, operating the last milk-producing dairy in Rockland County, Strawtown Dairy, New City. Together with his two brothers, John and Richard, they milked, bottled and delivered milk to Rocklanders for more than 50 years. After selling the dairy farm in Rockland, he continued to farm in Otsego County with his son, Robert.Mr. Kolka in his retired years enjoyed attending local auctions and gardening. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Mr. Kolka is survived by his wife, Vera, of 57 years; four children, Maureen Cifuni and her husband, Robert, of Congers, Michael Kolka and his wife, Betty, of Middletown, Robert Kolka and his companion, Cynthia White, of Milford, and Colleen Richard and her husband, Keith, of New City; and two daughters-in-law, Margaret Kolka of Mount Vision and Amy Jacobs of New City.Mr. Kolka was predeceased by his sons, Jeffrey and Timothy.Mr. Kolka is dearly loved by his 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, and will be deeply missed by all.Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, June 6, 2005, at the McGowan Funeral Home, 113 Lake Road East, Congers.The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Congers. Mortimer Dubins
CUMBERLAND, Md. — Dr. Mortimer Ira Dubins, 86, died peacefully Friday, June 3, 2005, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md. His wife, Barbara, son, Bruce, and daughter-in-law, Bobbi Dubins, were by his side.Ira was born in Boston, Mass., on March 24, 1919. He was the son of Dr. Joseph Dubins, a renowned Boston gastroenterologist, and Zina (Levinson) Dubins, a warm and loving mother.Ira graduated from Boston Latin School. He received a bachelor of science in chemistry from Tufts University; a master’s in mineralogy from the University of Kansas, and Ph.D. from Boston University.Ira was a captain in the Army Air Force and served as a mineralogist. After leaving the Army Air Force, he taught at Foxboro High School, Foxboro, Mass., Castleton College, Castleton, Vt., and Northwestern University, Chicago, Ill. He then went to the State University College at Oneonta, where he taught for 30 years, retiring at 70.Ira was a wonderful man. He was passionate about his family, classical music, and his teaching. Ira will be deeply missed by those who were lucky enough to be touched by his wisdom and kindness.Ira is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara; son, Bruce Dubins and wife Bobbi; and granddaughter, Jacqueline Dubins. He is also survived by his brother, Cyrus Dubins; and nephew, Mark Dubins, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.Friends were received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, Md.The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, with Rabbi Steven Snyderman officiating.Interment will be in East View Cemetery.A scholarship fund will be set up at the State University College at Oneonta in his memory. Ellen Williams
LITTLE FALLS — Ellen Williams, 83, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2005, at the Van Allen Nursing Home in Little Falls of natural causes.She was born Oct. 21, 1921, in Schenevus, the daughter of Harry and Agnes M. (Ives) Wayman.Ellen graduated from Schenevus Central School with high honors.Ellen was predeceased by her loving husband, Albert Williams.She was a member of the 4-H club, the Schenevus United Methodist Church and Equal Opportunities for Senior Citizens. Other interests were constructing one-of-a-kind handmade quilts, crossword puzzles, family get-togethers, gardening, baking, sewing and most of all her vacation time.She is survived by two sons, Charles and wife Eleanor Williams of Mohawk, and Patrick and wife Judy Williams of Little Falls; a daughter, Linda and her husband, Charles, Herbster of Salisbury Center; a niece, Dorothy Sherwood and family of Naugatuck, Conn.; a nephew, Daniel Baker and family of Schenevus; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.She was predeceased in death by one son, Nelson A. Williams; and two grandsons, Gene and Daniel Walrath.Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. to the funeral service time at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at the Schenevus United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Beverly Furey, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at the Summit Cemetery.Contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Schenevus, NY 12155.Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

’Heshie’ Pollak

MONROE TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Harry Jacob Pollak, 89, known as Heshie to the many people who loved him, died Thursday, June 2, 2005, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J.

He was born June 20, 1915, in Middle Village, N.Y., and lived in Plainview, N.Y., Miami Beach, Fla., and Clearbrook in Monroe Township, N.J.

A veteran of World War II, Pollak was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps, serving in Italy and several other posts in the United States and abroad.

A devoted, caring and kind husband, father and grandfather, Heshie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Hannah B. (Brodsky) Pollak; his sons, Michael Martin Pollak of Monroe Township, and Sam Pollak of Oneonta; his daughter-in-law, Julie Anne Pollak of Oneonta; his grandchildren, Rachel Jenny Pollak, Deborah Penny Isabel Pollak, Sarah Michelle Pollak and Joseph Chaim Pollak; his brother, Leonard Pollak of Florida; his sister, Yetta Brodie of Florida; his sister-in-law Miriam Weissman; and brother-in-law Jack Weissman of New Jersey; sisters-in-law Lila Pollak and Jean Pollak of Florida; and many nieces and nephews who appreciated his gentle sense of humor and how much he cared for those he loved.

He was predeceased by his parents, Sam and Jennie Pollak, sisters Sadie Geller and Evelyn Trachman, and brother Eli Pollak.

A graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Wellwood Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Jewish Communities, 111 8th Ave — Suite 11E, New York, NY 10011-5201.

Joan Ulrich

SUMMIT — Mrs. Joan Ulrich, 67, of Eminence Road, Summit, died Thursday, June 2, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

Mrs. Ulrich was born Dec. 31, 1937, in Brooklyn, the daughter of William and Rose (Greeley) Hackett.

Mrs. Ulrich moved from Long Island to Summit in 1988. She was a homemaker and a communicant of St. Anna’s Catholic Church in Summit.

She married George H. Ulrich on May 23, 1970. He predeceased her Oct. 16, 2000.

Survivors include her beloved son, Eric Ulrich; his fiancee, Heather Landacre; and their daughter, Taylor Ulrich; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Catherine and Joseph Ulrich of Clifton Park, Dorothy and Vincent Gafforio of Ridge, L.I., and Evelyn and Philip Shook of Calverton, L.I.; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Grace Hackett of Commack, L.I.; and numerous, nieces and nephews.

Friends called from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. today, June 6, at St. Anna’s Catholic Church, Route 10, Summit, with Father Edward Golding as celebrant.

Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. today, June 6, in Gerald B. H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anna’s Catholic Church Route 7, Summit, NY 12175.

Lorraine DiGiorgi

MERCERSBURG, Pa. — Mrs. Lorraine A. DiGiorgi, 72, of 7574 Robinson Road, Mercersburg, Pa., died Sunday, June 5, 2005, at 12:20 a.m. at ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Aug. 12, 1932, in Queens, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Henrietta Remling Becker.

While a resident of Long Pond, Pa., she was a 15-year member of the Long Pond Fire Department and was employed by Nader Towers of Oneonta for eight years. She was last employed by Cole Layer Trumble of Tyler, Texas, as a county assessment administrator covering eastern Pennsylvania.

Surviving are a daughter, Jenni-Lynn C. DiGiorgi of Mercersburg; three sons, Joseph G. DiGiorgi of Otego, Craig D. DiGiorgi of Middleboro, Mass., and Michael J. DiGiorgi of Moscow, Tenn.; and 14 grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Jean Carey.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, with the Rev. Ronald K. Strader officiating. Viewing will be one hour before the services Thursday at the funeral home.

Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Henry H. Clough

ALBANY — Henry (Hank) Clough, 80, died Monday, June 6, 2005, at the Albany County Nursing Home.

He was born in Oneonta, the son of the late Henry and Helen DeLaMater Clough.

He was a graduate of Oneonta High School and served his country in the Army Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Clough worked for the New York Telephone Company in Albany for 40 years.

He was an active member of several veterans organizations, including the VFW Post No. 6776, Mighty Eighth Air Force Historical Society, the 486th Bomb Group Association and the 210th Armor Association. He was also a member of the Communications Workers of America and the Telephone Pioneers. He was a member of the John Clough Genealogical Society and was very active with the Boy Scouts, holding the position of Scout Master of Troop 46, St. James Parish.

Mr. Clough was also the Explorer adviser for the New York Telephone Company, Sheehy Palmer Post and St. James Church, where he was also a longtime communicant.

He is survived by his wife, Joan A. Miller Clough; and many friends.

He was predeceased by his son, Gerald Clough.

Funeral services will be at 8:15 a.m. Thursday at the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave., thence to St. James Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Interment will follow the Mass in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.

Caroline Snyder

MIDDLEFIELD — Graveside committal services for Caroline (Carrie) Snyder, 90, who passed away Feb. 10, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, in the Middlefield Cemetery, Middlefield, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating. Burial will follow.

A time of fellowship will be at the Middlefield Baptist Church after the service.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Kenneth Booth

SIDNEY — Kenneth Booth, 80, of 3 New St., Sidney, passed away unexpectedly Sunday night, June 5, 2005, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Jan. 8, 1925, in Sidney, the son of the late Dorwin Neal and Ethel Moran Booth.

On April 8, 1951, he married Jean Topping in the Sidney United Methodist Church.

Kenneth attended Sidney High School with the class of 1943. During his senior year, he entered the United States Navy to serve his country during World War II.

Ken was a longtime member of the Sidney United Church. He was a life member of the Sidney Fire Department and the Phelps Hose Company No. 1. Ken was a retired driver for the Sidney Central Schools.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean Booth of Sidney; son, Robert K. Booth of Sidney; sisters-in-law, Ruth Booth of Oxford and Henrietta Booth of Mount Upton; three nephews, Michael of Sidney, Stephen and Jim Booth, both of Mount Upton; niece, Lori Collins of Sidney.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2005, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of his church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, NY 13838.

Peter David Van Der Krake

BAINBRIDGE — Peter David Van Der Krake, 70, of Houck Drive, Bainbridge, and formerly of the Glen Rock, N.J., area, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, June 5, 2005, at his residence.

He was born July 25, 1934, in Fair Lawn, N.J., the son of the late Anthony and Lena Kuiper Van Der Krake.

He married Mary Kwak, who survives.

He was employed by the Glen Rock Public Works Department from 1956 to 1965. Peter was a Glen Rock Police Officer from 1965 through 1970. From 1972 until his retirement in 1992, he was superintendent for the Glen Rock New Jersey Solid Waste Department.

Peter was a 40-year member of the Glen Rock Volunteer Fire Department, a former member of the Glen Rock Ambulance Corp.

After moving to upstate New York, Peter became a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church. He served his church on its S.P.R. Committee.

Peter was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country from 1957 to 1959. He rejoiced in his family. For many years, Peter enjoyed playing softball.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, and their nine children; and 19 grandchildren; daughter, Donna LaBarr of Elmira, Calif., and her children, Adrienne and Beau LaBarr; son, David Van Der Krake and his wife, Madonna, of Cherry Valley, and their children, Scott, Jim, Anna, Jamie and Anthony Van Der Krake; son, Jeffrey Van Der Krake of Cherry Valley; daughter, Sheryl Pinkston and her husband, Tim, of Loxahatchee, Fla., and children Trevor and Ryan Pinkston; daughter, Sharon Timpano of North Syracuse, and her daughters, Mallory and Madison; son, Daniel Meyer and his wife, Marilyn, of Bloomingburg, and their children, Lauryn, Bryan, Annalyse Meyer; son, Kenneth Meyer of Mooresville, N.C.; son, Douglas Meyer and his wife, Marlene, of Waldwick, N.J., and their children, Ryan and Karly Meyer; and son, Scott C. Meyer and his wife, Heidi, and their children, Madison, Grace and Max Meyer; sisters, Beverly McFadden of Newark, Del., and Barbara Procaccio of Newark, Del.; mother-in-law, Wilhelmina Kwak of Oneonta; and two aunts, Jennifer Coombs of Glen Rock, N.J., and Henrietta Van Der Wall of Patterson, N.J. Peter is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to call from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. A prayer service will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of his church, officiating.
