Carrie L. Bookhout

LAURENS — Carrie Louise Bookhout, 91, of Laurens died Friday, June 3, 2005, at Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born in the town of Burlington on Oct. 25, 1913, the oldest daughter of 13 children of Murray Benjamin and Florence (Stickles) Benjamin.

She married Kester D. Bookhout on May 4, 1934, at the Presbyterian Church Parsonage in Laurens. He died Dec. 11, 1995. She and her husband operated the family dairy farm in Laurens for many years.

She was a member of the Eastern Star of Laurens, the Burlington Quilting Group, the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital volunteers, and was very active in the Presbyterian Church in Laurens.

She enjoyed cake decorating, quilting, painting, crafts and the catering of weddings. She was an accomplished organist and pianist and was truly a lady of many talents.

Carrie is survived by her children, a son, Benjamin Bookhout and companion Sylvia Rozelle of Laurens; a daughter, Beth Coyle, and husband Chris of Central Square; a daughter-in-law, Joan Bookhout of Mount Vision; a brother-in-law, Byron Bookhout and wife Lyn of Dover, Del.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her siblings, Orlo Benjamin and wife Judy, Murray Benjamin and wife Evelyn, Adrian Benjamin and wife Martha, Kenneth Benjamin and wife Sharon, Donald Benjamin and wife Jeanette, Dorothy Bolton, Mildred Stebbins, and Richard Benjamin and wife Pat.

Carrie was predeceased by her husband, Kester, who died in 1995; a son, Elvin Bookhout, who died in 1984; a granddaughter, Tammy Bookhout, who died in 1991; a great-grandson, Jonathan Bookhout Dilello, who died in 2002; and a great-granddaughter, Jessica Bookhout, who died in 2001. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Venona, Sidney and Charles.

Calling hours were 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 6, 2005, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2005, with the Rev. Harry Myers officiating. Committal services and burial will follow at the Elm Row Cemetery in Laurens.

Those who wish may make donations to the Laurens Village Cemetery Association, PO 228, Laurens NY 13796 or the charity of your choice in Carrie’s memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

June H. Tebbetts

LAKE WORTH, Fla. — June H. Tebbetts of Lake Worth, Fla., passed away Monday, June 6, 2005, after a long illness.

June was born May 20, 1920, and was raised in the Cooperstown area. She lived many years in Marion, Mass., where she owned and operated The Sitting Duck, a knitting and gift shop.

Those who knew June often referred to her as having a million-dollar pair of hands, as she was equally adept at fine needlework as she was at plumbing, carpentry, furniture refinishing or tuning the engines of her prized MG’s.

June was predeceased by her son, Francis A. Landrigan; and her brothers, Richard Hoke and Atlee Hoke.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Francelia and Steve Williams, Roswell, Ga.; her sons, Paul Landrigan, Lake Worth, Fla., and Art Tebbetts, Fairhaven, Mass.; and a beloved sister-in-law, Raelene Hoke, Norwich. In addition, she leaves 18 nieces and nephews; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; and a few close friends.

James A. McDonald

DELHI — Graveside services for James A. McDonald, 71, of Delhi, who died March 1, 2005, will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2005, in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, with the Rev. Jeff Staples officiating.

Arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Jean Schlafer Penn

DELHI — Graveside services for Jean Schlafer Penn, who died Jan. 6, 2005, in Memphis, Tenn., will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, with the Rev. Lisa Heckman officiating.

Arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Sharon Hoffman

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. — Sharon (Williams) Hoffman, 62, of Hendersonville, N.C., died Saturday, May 14, 2005, after a brief illness.

She was the daughter of the late William and Doris Williams of New Berlin and was preceded in death by a brother, James, and a sister, Carol.

She married Donald on Sept. 8, 1962, and lived in the Watertown area for 35 years. He was a New York State Police officer.

She enjoyed bowling, gardening and reading.

Survivors include her husband, Donald J. Hoffman; three children, Steven and Brenda of Norfolk, Va., William and Lisa of Waikoloa, Hawaii, and Karen and Rich Fogarty of Rochester; seven grandchildren, Christopher and Alissa Hoffman, Ethan Hoffman, Kaitlin and Kelsey Peters, and Stacy and Katie Fogarty; two brothers, Roger and Kay Williams of New Berlin; and Richard and Joanne Williams of Edmeston; two sisters, Barbara and Clyde Lilley of New Berlin, and Debi and Randy Beadle of East Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, at the United Methodist Church in New Berlin.

Elaine J. Logan

ONEONTA — Elaine J. Logan, 81, passed away peacefully Monday, June 6, 2005, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born Sept. 6, 1923, in Oneonta, the daughter of Ralph and Cynthia (Wells) Sandell.

Elaine was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Logan, in November 1999.

She is survived by her son, Gary, and his wife, Pearl Logan of Sidney Center; a grandson, Shawn Logan, and Tina of Oneonta; and a great-grandson, Adam Logan of Oneonta.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2005, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home in Oneonta, with the Rev. Edward J. Ryan officiating.

Interment will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Elaine had a great love of all animals.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Elaine to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 4845 Route 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

George Chermack

MACEDON — George L. Chermack Sr. of Macedon passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2005.

George is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children Maggy Clemens, George L. (Lauren) Chermack Jr., Susan (Jeffrey) Simmers, John (Orestes Diaz) Chermack, Teresa Malinowski; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Florence (Anthony) Dulkis; and many nieces and nephews.

George was an industrial arts and career education teacher for 20 years at Watervliet High School and was a president of the Teachers Union. He was also an avid golfer.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home, Egypt Location, 7501 Pittsford, Palmyra Road, Fairport.

A funeral Mass will be at 11:15 a.m. Thursday at the Church of the Assumption, Fairport.

Interment will be 1pm, Friday, June 10, 2005, in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Worcester.

Donations may be made to the Serenity House, 1278 Brace Road, Victor NY 14564.

John D. Chase

COOPERSTOWN — John D. Chase, 83, formerly of Whig Corners, died Monday night, June 6, 2005, at Otsego Manor.

He was born Oct. 23, 1921, in Cooperstown, a son of Earl C. and Lulu Belle (Wilson) Chase.

He married Elizabeth Belle Walton on Oct. 22, 1940, at her parents’ home in Springfield.

Raised and educated in Cooperstown, he was employed for the majority of his life by Earl C. Chase and Sons, a farm machinery dealership established by his father and later owned by John and his brother, Ernie Chase. He truly enjoyed the farm machinery business, as it gave him the opportunity to travel throughout the countryside he loved and visit with their many customers and friends.

John was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown and the Native Sons of Cooperstown. He was also an institutional representative for the local Boy Scouts of America and was active with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Otsego County.

John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth, a resident of Otsego Manor; two sons and daughters-in-law, James E. and Edna Chase of Fly Creek and David H. and Betty Chase of Hartwick Seminary; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and William Anton of Venice, Fla., and Mary and Bobby Richardson of Milton, Fla.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Connor, Anoel Kelly, William Anton Jr., Amy Chase and David H. Chase Jr.; six great-grandchildren, Amber and Benjamin Kelly and Nathan, Rachel, Brandon and Matthew Connor; one brother, Ernest W. Chase of Cooperstown; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Lewis E. Chase, who died Nov. 6, 1973.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2005, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Douglas Deer, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, officiating. Burial will follow in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday night, June 9, 2005, when John’s family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, 19 Elm St., Cooperstown, NY 13326 or the Activities Fund at Otsego Manor, 128 Phoenix Mills Cross Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Kenneth V. Barlow

KIRKVILLE — Kenneth V. Barlow, 69, of Kirkville died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at home.

Mr. Barlow was born in Oneonta on July 1, 1935, the son of Dan C. and Adda (Mattice) Barlow Sr.

He was employed by AT&T, then Lucent Technologies for more than 30 years, retiring in 1996.

He was a member of the Kirkville Wesleyan Church. He was a Navy veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Rose D. (Westfall); a son, Kenneth V. (Susan) Barlow Jr.; two daughters, Elizabeth (Walter) Nemitz of Frankfort, and Theresa (George) Mekeel of Pitcher; a brother, William (Marian) of Rensselaer; a sister, Ellen Brown of Oneonta; nine grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; one brother, Dan Barlow Jr.; three sisters, Allien Wenck, Florence Hauser and Mary Jean Schmitt.

Funeral services and burial were private.

Arrangements were by the G.F. Zimmer Funeral Home, Chittenango.

Mildred Patrick

SIDNEY CENTER — Memorial services for Katherine Mildred Patrick of Sidney Center will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, at the United Methodist Church of Sidney Center with the Rev. Kip Stratton officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Sidney Center.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Ethel M. Ferguson

ONEONTA — Ethel M. Ferguson, 47, a lifelong resident of Oneonta, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at her home with her loving family by her side.

She was born May 30, 1958, in Oneonta, the daughter of the late Francis L. and Evelyn (Clapper) Kleingardner.

She married Timothy A. Ferguson on Nov. 1, 1978. He survives her.

She worked at the Pizza Hut in Oneonta as a cook for three years. Ethel enjoyed crafts, ceramics, fishing and animals, and she adopted many stray cats and dogs. She loved to play bingo and spend time with her grandchildren and family.

Ethel is survived by her husband of 26 years, Timothy A. Ferguson, of Oneonta; her children, Alice Alger and fiance Jerry Parkes, Luke and fiancee Christina Mattice, and Joshua Ferguson and April, all of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Lisa and Patrick Parkes; her brother, Walter W. KleinGardner of Otego; her sisters, Patricia K. Markham of Sidney, Sandra Waters and her husband, Tom, of Oneonta, Debra Votee and her husband, Ronald, of Oneonta, and Darlene Figueroa and her husband, Pablo, of Roosevelt; as well as many nieces and nephews.

There will be no public calling hours. Funeral services for Ethel M. Ferguson will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, with the Rev. David Reese, pastor of the Columbus Community Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, PO Box 88, Delhi, NY 13753 or to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Ethel M. Ferguson.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

James Curtis

PITTSFIELD — James Richard (Jim) Curtis, 61, of Pittsfield died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born April 24, 1944, in New Berlin, the son of Carl Louis Curtis and Iona E. (Button) Curtis.

He married Joanne Naas on May 9, 1970, in Leonardsville.

Jim was a lifelong area resident and had operated his own dairy farm at one time. He was a school bus driver for New Berlin Central School for several years and also worked at Steel Sales of Sherburne as a foreman/engineer. He also had worked at Sherburne Metals for a period of time and most recently was self-employed operating his business, which was called Quality Sharpening.

Jim is survived by his wife, Joanne, of Pittsfield; a son, James William (Bill) Curtis and his wife, Darlene, of Hamilton; a daughter, Sharon Michelle (Shari) Ruger and husband, David E., of Pine Bush. Jim was blessed by his grandchildren, Tyler James and Shelby Lynn Curtis and Harlie Joanne Ruger; as well as a niece and two nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2005, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Graveside funeral and committal service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, in the Fairview Cemetery in New Berlin with the Rev. Beverly Butler officiating.

Those who wish are asked to make donations to the Pittsfield Emergency Squad or the Edmeston Emergency Squad in Jim’s memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
