Florence A. Gano

EAST MEREDITH — Florence A. Gano, 82, of East Meredith died Wednesday, June 8, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer, with her loving children by her side at the home of her son, John.

She was born Dec. 19, 1922, in Hightstown, N.J., the daughter of Harry and Matilda (Jackson) Bowker.

She married Seth P. Gano on Aug. 14, 1954. Mr. Gano predeceased her May 21, 1980.

She worked at various secretarial jobs in the Oneonta area, including Burt Box Factory, Gladding Delray and SUCO until her retirement in 1989.

Florence was a member of the Young at Heart of Schenevus and the Wiaontha Rebekah Lodge 489 of Schenevus. She was an avid bowler from 1980 to 2001. Florence enjoyed reading, crocheting and collecting bells. She had many bells from all over the world. She was also a NASCAR fan and enjoyed going to different casinos.

Florence was a very devoted, loving mother, wife and grandmother and will be deeply missed by all those that knew her.

She is survived by her son, John H. Gano of East Meredith and his companion, Gayle Beck; her daughter, Patricia M. Warf of Davenport Center and her companion, Marc Stachina; a stepson, Theodore Gano and his wife, June, of Davenport Center; a stepdaughter, Virginia Allen and her companion, Gerry Smith, of Henrico, N.C. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Finan of Whiting, N.J.; her niece, Nancy Smith and her husband, Roger, of Glen Gardner, N.J.; two great-nieces, Caryn and Christine Smith of Glen Gardner, N.J.; six stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. Florence also leaves behind her beloved cat, Buster, and granddog, Brady.

Florence was predeceased by her father and mother, Harry and Matilda Bowker; and her stepmother, Mary Bowker; her half sister, Marjorie Scheidaler; two brothers-in-law, William Scheidaler and Joseph A. Finan; two nephews, William Scheidaler Jr. and Joseph Finan Jr.; and one stepgrandson, Richard Hoover Jr.

Funeral services for Florence A. Gano will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William Harkins officiating.

Burial will follow in the Elk Creek Cemetery, Schenevus.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2005, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, with a special thanks to the Delhi Hospice Staff or to the East Meredith Fire Department-First Responders, 6192 County Highway 10, East Meredith, NY 13757, in loving memory of Florence A. Gano.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Phyllis D. Wagner

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Phyllis Decker Wagner, 71, of 230 Francis St., New Wilmington, Pa., passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Jameson Memorial in New Castle.

Phyllis was born Dec. 3, 1933 in Delhi, the daughter of Edwin M. Decker and Marian Hyzer Decker. Her parents predeceased her.

She married Wendell Blake Wagner on June 25, 1955. They would have been married for 50 years this year. Her husband is the mayor of New Wilmington, Pa.

She retired from Wilmington area school district, having taught business subjects for 26 years.

Phyllis was a graduate of Andes Central School in 1951. She was the valedictorian of her class. She then went to Westminster College, where she graduated in 1955.

Phyllis had been active with Westminster College and was a trustee of the college. She had been active with the American Cancer Society and the League of Women’s Voters. Regarding the fund raising, Phyllis was known as the "Pin Queen" of the Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County. She served on the Board of Directors of the Crisis Shelter. She was also a member of the Thursday Club of New Wilmington.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of New Wilmington. She had organized the geranium sales at the church for the last 18 years. She held many leadership positions and was a member of the church choir for 54 years.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Wendell B. Wagner, at home; one daughter, Susie Garrett and her husband, Roger, of New Wilmington; one son, Doug Wagner and his wife, Lorrie, of South Williamsport; two brothers, W. Wayne Decker of Andes and Richard Decker of Tempe, Ariz.; and one grandchild, Kimberly Garrett.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2005, at the Smith Funeral Home, 310 West Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington, Pa.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, in the New Wilmington United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Nancy Mussehl of the church officiating.

Burial will be in Fair Oaks Cemetery in New Wilmington, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County, 1218 West State St., New Castle, PA 16101 or the United Methodist Church of New Wilmington.

George A. Donlan

DECATUR — George A. Donlan, 73, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, June 9, 2005, at Albany Medical Center.

He was born May 23, 1932, in Queens, the son of James J. and Grace (Hannigan) Donlan.

George was a United States Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Korean War and obtaining the rank of Lance Corporal.

He married Joan Demoa on Oct. 12, 1957, at St. Anthony’s Shrine Church in Nanuet. She predeceased him March 2, 1984.

George was employed at the Orange & Rockland Utilities in Spring Valley for 42 years, retiring in 1994. He lived in Nanuet until retirement and then moved to Decatur with his "Sweetie" Diane. George was a member of the NRA and was an avid fisherman and sportsman.

He is survived by his forever companion, Diane Schultz; a son, Thomas; a daughter "in-law," Sherri; three grandchildren, Sara Joan, 2½ years old, and George and Jacob, 10 weeks old; a brother, Robert; a sister, Irene Wilcox; several nieces, nephews and many grieving friends.

Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 12, 2005, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the East Worcester First Responders, PO Box 781, East Worcester, NY 12064 or the Worcester Emergency Squad, PO Box 191, Worcester, NY 12197.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Dorothy Gohde

MIDDLEFIELD — Dorothy Gohde, 81, who died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at Otsego Manor, is also survived by her grandchildren, Melissa and Gordon; her sisters, Michelle McNeil, Gladys Conant and her husband, Dick, Judy Rockwell and her husband, Jerry, Rose Marie Bobnick (the widow of Jim Bobnick); her brother, John Butler and his wife, Zeta; and her cousin, Betty Trumbell and her husband, Dick.

Arrangements by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

George Chermack

MACEDON — Interment services for George L. Chermack Sr., will be 1 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2005, in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Worcester.

Mr. Chermack passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2005.

David Joseph Deal

NEW BERLIN — David Joseph Deal, 63, of New Berlin, beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, died suddenly Sunday, May 1, 2005, in New Berlin.

He was born Sept. 18, 1941, in New Berlin, the son of Harold Stone Deal and Margaret (Noone) Deal.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carole Ann (Rowe) Deal; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Kimberly Deal, and their children, Jacob and Melissa, of Troy; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna Deal and Dr. Anthony Andrews and their son, Nicholas Andrews of Manlius; a sister-in-law, Pamela (Deal) Kelley and her husband, Lon; nieces, Karen Kelley, Emily Lindberg, Molly McCarley, Lori Kelley and their families; a brother-in-law, Bill Rowe and his wife, Linda; nieces, Diane Longmoor and Karen Herrera and their families; and a nephew, Ken Rowe.

David was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Robert Deal.

Dave grew up in New Berlin, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends. He worked as a lifeguard at Silver Lake, was active in the Boy Scouts, sang in a barbershop quartet, played high school baseball and basketball and acted in various school plays. After graduation from New Berlin Central School, he received a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Albany College of Pharmacy and became a pharmacist at the Albany Medical Center.

In 1965, he entered partnership with his father, becoming the third generation of Deal pharmacists to own and operate Dykes Drug Company in New Berlin. After the sale of the drug store in 1998, Dave continued to practice pharmacy with Price Chopper in Oneonta and Norwich.

He was honored at the Pittsfield Community Days in August 1999, for his service to the community. Dave felt it was a privilege to serve New Berlin and surrounding communities as their pharmacist for so many years.

His interactions with the people he served, whether they were in a professional capacity or just casual banter, were the most rewarding part of his job.

Dave retired in October 2004, and was enjoying camping, cruising, dancing, walking in town with his friends or his dog, vacationing in Florida and spending more time with his family. He particularly enjoyed the everyday tasks of taking care of his home and property, including feeding the birds, maintaining the swimming pool, and snowplowing or mowing with his John Deere tractor.

He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Friends are invited to call at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2005, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Berlin. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.

William E. Barnes

TREADWELL — William E. Barnes, 87, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 11, 2005, at his home in Treadwell with his family at his side.

He was born Nov. 15, 1917, in North Franklin, the son of Leslie and Eva (Gardner) Barnes.

He was raised and educated in the Franklin area and graduated from the AL Kellogg School in Treadwell.

He married Shirley Ulmer on Oct. 29, 1940, in Treadwell.

He owned and operated a dairy farm in Treadwell most of his life, and later was in partnership with his two sons.

He was active in the Delaware County Jersey Cattle Club, the Eastern AI Cooperative and Cornell Cooperative Extension for many years. He was a director on the Franklin Fire Insurance Company board for 55 years, many of them serving as president. He also served on the Delhi School Board and the Franklin Town Board. He was town justice of Franklin for eight years.

He also enjoyed traveling, square dancing, snowmobiling and playing cards with his granddaughters.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years; his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Nancy; and his son, Burt, all of Treadwell; three granddaughters, Cassie and Amanda of Treadwell, and Amber and her boyfriend, Warren Engle, of New Jersey. He is also survived by two sisters, Mildred and her husband, Robert Smith, and Eva Monroe, all of Oneonta; his sister-in-law, Henrietta Ulmer of Treadwell; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Grace; and his brothers, Elmer, Louie, Burton, Lloyd, Robert and Larry; and a brother-in-law, Walter Ulmer.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at the Treadwell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care of Oneonta or the Treadwell Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Esther Hartwell

STAMFORD — Esther Hartwell, 87, passed away Friday, June 10, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born April 28, 1918, in the town of Blenheim, the daughter of Grant and Grace (Clum) Mattice.

Esther was predeceased by her husband, Everett Hartwell, in 1994. They were married 57 years and lived a happy life in Shew Hollow, Stamford.

She is survived by her son, David and his wife, Beverly, of Stamford; two grandsons, Shawn of Baldwinsville and Darby and his wife, Donna, of Stamford; and a great-granddaughter, Lauren Ashley. She is also survived by three sisters, Mabel Hedges, Josephine Haslun and Genevieve Conro; a brother-in-law, Clarence Hartwell and his wife, Dorothy Hartwell; and a sister-in-law, Joan Mattice; as well as several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Waylen Bray officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Sylvia D. Medved

DECATUR — Sylvia D. Medved, 68, passed away Friday, June 10, 2005, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 2, 1937, in Ridgewood, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Okorn) Medved.

Sylvia was previously of Kew Gardens and has been a resident of Worcester since 1972.

Along with being a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Worcester, she also served as a eucharistic minister and member of the Parish Council. She was a past member of the Winnebago Travel Club and the Mt. Mansfield Ski Club.

Sylvia is survived by a brother, Raymond Medved of Pennsylvania; three sisters, Mary Huebner, Helen and her husband, Gene, McNichol of Worcester and Betty and her husband, George, Mravlja of Decatur; many close nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

She was predeceased by a brother, Chuck Medved, and a very special friend, Father George Mihovich.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Sylvia to the St. Joseph’s Building Fund, PO Box 156, Worcester, NY; Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, 1 Atwell Drive, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or the Worcester Emergency Squad, PO Box 191, Worcester, NY 12197.
