Janet Mae Malone

NORWICH — Janet Mae Matteson Malone, 73, of Norwich passed away June 11, 2005, after a valiant struggle with cancer.

Janet was born in the family farmhouse Oct. 14, 1931. She was the daughter of Clyde Floyd Matteson Sr. and Margaret Elizabeth Zirkel. As a child, Janet lived life with much gusto, enthusiasm and energy. That same spirit remained with her throughout her entire life.

In 1950, Janet graduated from New Berlin Central School. During her high school years she was very active in many activities, including class president and valedictorian.

Janet loved music and was an excellent trombone player. She marched in the very first Pageant of the Bands in Sherburne in 1949.

On Oct. 18, 1952, Janet married Robert James Malone in St. Paul’s Church in Norwich. Together they enjoyed an adventurous and vibrant life. They loved to travel and entertain family and friends. Downhill skiing was a passion they shared, even traveling as far as the Alps to enjoy the slopes. Bob predeceased Janet on Sept. 7, 1988.

Several years after her marriage, Janet went to work for the Maurice Ireland Insurance Agency in Norwich. She remained a dedicated lifelong employee of Mr. Ireland. Upon his death in 1989, Janet took over the helm of the company. It seems that Janet was always meant to be a businesswoman.

In her youth on the farm she would show up early in the morning before the workers to begin a day of picking beans. She was involved in the insurance business up until the time of her death.

Janet came from a large, loving family.

She was predeceased by her Mom and Dad; her sisters, Evelyn Hazzard, Marion Button and Lois O’Connor; as well as her brother, Donald Matteson; and several nieces and nephews. Her close friend, Dick Devine, with whom she shared many fun and very special times, also predeceased her.

Matteson and wife, Florence, of Springfield Center; her sisters-in-law, Anne Matteson of Cape Cod, and Dorothy Malone Franklin of Norwich; and brother-in-law, Ed Hazzard of South Edmeston. Her dearest friend of more than 40 years, Mary Post of Oxford, also survives.

Although Janet was never blessed with children of her own, she truly considered each of her nieces and nephews, along with their families, to be her own. She is survived by Joan Hazzard Covais, June Hazzard Weinheimer, Susan Hazzard Whitman, Kathleen Hazzard Fox, Gloria Button Cole, Jane Button Flaherty, Cheryl Matteson, Rick Matteson, Betty Hill McNitt, Linda Hill Jones, Margaret O’Connor, Kathleen O’Connor, James Matteson, Jeanne Matteson Hodack, David Franklin, Dianne Franklin Smith, and Donna Franklin Snell. Her good friend, Elaine Schwan also survives her.

Janet’s welcoming smile and friendly laugh will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her.

A Mass of Resurrection for Janet will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2005, at the Church of the Holy Apostle St. Paul’s, with interment to follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. The Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor, will officiate.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
