Stephen R. Peet

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Stephen Richard Peet, 47, of Upper Marlboro, Md., died of heart failure June 17, 2005, at University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore after a short illness.

Born March 10, 1958, in Cooperstown, he was the son of Susan M. Peet of Davenport and the late Richard W. Peet.

Stephen was reared in Davenport. He graduated from Charlotte Valley Central School in 1976 and from the Crane School of Music in Potsdam in 1980. He earned his master’s degree in music from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J., in 1986.

Mr. Peet worked at St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church in Annapolis, Md., as director of music and liturgy for the past eight years. He also taught privately, giving vocal, piano and organ instruction. He was a member and lecturer for the National Association of Pastoral Musicians.

An avid bridge player, he was a director and instructor for the Severna Park Bridge Club in Maryland and achieved the rank of Bronze Life Master.

In addition to his mother, surviving are his longtime companion, Teodoro E. Gelabert of Upper Marlboro, Md.; his brother, Timothy J. Peet, and family, of San Antonio, Texas; and his sister, Lynda S. Peet of Davenport; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A beautiful funeral Mass was at St. Andrew by the Bay on Wednesday, June 22, 2005.

A memorial service is being planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2005, at the Davenport United Methodist Church.

Alfred Pendlebury

SIDNEY — Alfred H. Pendlebury, 69, formerly of Sidney, passed away suddenly Tuesday, June 28, 2005, in Rochester.

He was born Dec. 18, 1935, son of the late Alfred H. and Pauline E. Pendlebury.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Sidney.

Mr. Pendlebury was a resident of Rochester since July 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Pendlebury, Rochester; three daughters, Pauline M. Keller (Lucas) of Bellingham, Mass., Katherine R. Leidy (Martin) of Rochester, and Ellen Workman (Michael) of Rochester; and two grandsons, Joseph T. and Justin LaRose of Bellingham, Mass.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are by the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Betty R. Leneker

CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Betty Leneker, 86, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born May 10, 1919, in the town of Sharon, the daughter of Ruben and Sophia Ruth (Engle) Comrie.

On March 18, 1939, she married Raymond Victor Leneker Sr. He predeceased her in 1998.

She had worked for the Glove Factory in Cherry Valley and BeechNut in Canajoharie.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her loving family: sons Raymond Leneker and his wife, Beverly, and Richmond Leneker and his wife, Diane; his daughter, Mary Coskrey, and her husband, Ernie; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Raymond Victor Leneker.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating. Burial will follow in the Sharon Cemetery.

There will be no public calling hours.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Mary Horan

BRENTWOOD, Calif. — Mary Horan, 90, passed in Antioch, Calif., on Wednesday, June 15, 2005.

Mary was born Dec. 12, 1914, in New York City, the daughter of Hugh and May Mulligan.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence and Irene, and a brother, William Mulligan.

She was raised in Richfield Springs and graduated from Richfield High School. She moved from Richfield right after high school, working in New York City initially.

After marriage to her husband, Lon Horan, she raised her family in Cortland and Syracuse. She was widowed in 1947, and for those who knew her, she was a strong example of determination, selflessness and faith. As a single mom, she became a small business owner of a hair-styling salon in Schenectady for more than 20 years, never forgetting her roots in Richfield, returning frequently for vacations and holidays.

In 1974, Mary joined her children in California, where she resided until her passing.

Mary is survived by her loving son, Ron, and his wife, Carol, residents of Brentwood, Calif.; her loving daughter, Sandy Cahill of San Diego; her beloved brother, Robert Mulligan of Cooperstown; and her nephew, Tom Cantwell of Springfield. She is loved in eternal life by her six adoring grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Liturgy was celebrated by her family at St. Anne Church in Byron, Calif., on June 21, 2005.

A graveside memorial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Richfield Springs in August.

Doris I. Platt

MARGARETVILLE — Doris I. Platt, 83, of Margaretville passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

She was born March 9, 1922, Margaretville, the daughter of John L. and Florence (Sanford) Sanford.

Doris married Everett F. Platt on Sept. 28, 1940, in Margaretville. He died Jan. 10, 1995.

She worked as a cashier for the Bussy Grocery Store in Margaretville and as a part-time mail carrier in the Margaretville area.

Doris was a lifelong Margaretville resident. She graduated from the Margaretville Central School. Doris enjoyed crocheting and baking for family and friends.

She is survived by one son, Gary Platt, Bovina Center; one daughter, Kathleen Lawrence, Margaretville; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one brother, Earl M. Sanford; and by a great-grandchild, Dylan Michael George.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Burial will be in Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made in memory of Doris I. Platt to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Edna M. Smith

JORDANVILLE — Edna Margaret Smith, 92, formerly of Main Street, passed away Wednesday morning, June 29, 2005, in the home of her sister, Louise Butler of the town of Oneonta, with whom she had resided.

She was born March 17, 1913, in Jordanville, daughter of the late George F. and Mary Crim Yule.

A lifelong Jordanville resident, she was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School with the class of 1930. She then furthered her education at Oneonta Normal School, graduating in 1933. Mrs. Smith taught in rural one-room schoolhouses in Orendorf Corners and Jordanville. She retired from Richfield Springs Central School, where she taught second grade, in 1975.

On Dec. 26, 1942, she was united in marriage to Leslie E. Smith in Orlando, Fla., a loving and devoted union of 53 years until his passing Feb. 22, 1996.

Edna had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Jordanville Federated Church. For many years she taught Sunday school. She had a true sense of community. For more than 20 years she volunteered her services working at the Jordanville Public Library and had served on the Herkimer County Republican Committee.

To all who knew her, they will remember her warm smile and gentle way. She will never be forgotten by her many friends and former students.

Surviving are a sister, Edith Louise Butler of Oneonta; one brother, Donald Yule, and his wife, Marion, "Robie"; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Leslie, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Curtis Yule, and two sisters, Esther Moyer and Ethel Briggs.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2005, in the Jordanville Federated Church with the Rev. Scott Hocking, pastor, officiating.

Committal in Highland Rural Cemetery, Jordanville, was private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Jordanville Public Library or the Jordanville Federated Church.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Betty Jean Hunt

SIDNEY CENTER — Betty Jean Hunt, born Aug. 25, 1932, to Jess and Elgia (Gray) Howes, passed away peacefully June 30, 2005, at the Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital in Sidney.

She married William E. Hunt on Aug. 21, 1954, in Masonville. William predeceased her April 16, 1997.

Betty Jean served as a bookkeeper for her father’s business, Jess F. Howes, Inc., for 38 years.

She was a past member of the Sidney Center Fire Department and Emergency Squad, a member of the Sidney Center Historical Group and a member of the Sidney Center Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jacalyn and Kris Vandervort, Sidney; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Gwen Hunt, Sidney Center, and Todd and Kelly Hunt, Wilmington, Del.; grandchildren, Kristen and John Figary, Sidney Center, Kelly Vandervort, Watervliet, Michelle and Renee Hunt, Sidney Center, and Elyse Hunt, Wilmington, Del.; brothers, Robert, Bruce and William Howes, Sidney Center; very dear friend, Janice Loker; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also predeceased by her parents and her brother, Jack.

Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 3, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Sidney Center at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Center United Methodist Church or the Sidney Center Fire Department and Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Howard R. Telford

WALTON — Howard R. Telford, 87, a lifelong and well-respected Walton area resident, passed away surrounded by his family Thursday morning, June 30, 2005, in Bassett Healthcare Cooperstown after a short illness.

Howard was born June 18, 1918, in DeLancey, the son of the late Ray and Ethel Garrick Telford.

He married Thelma I. Miller on June 22, 1941. She died Jan. 4, 1979.

He was a well-known Prudential Insurance Agent for many years. He was a longtime member of the United Presbyterian Church of Walton, serving as a trustee and head usher. He was a longtime member of the Walton Fire Department, serving as secretary and later as an honorary member. He belonged to the Oak Ridge Hunting Club and the Pines Brook Fish and Game Club. Howard loved square dancing and would go to dances all over the area. He loved traveling, tending to his flowers, bowling, playing cards and all kinds of games. Most of all, he loved and was very proud of his family.

He is survived by his companion, Betty Robinson; two daughters, Betsy L. Howland of Fairfield, Iowa, and Beverly K. and Ryan Kilmer of Hamden; one brother, Robert L. Telford of Walton; his grandchildren, Rex D. Layton, Julie and Dale Stephans, Joan and Mel Allen, Jennifer, Thomas, David Howland, and Kelly; three great-grandchildren, Bradly, Mason and Jaxen; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, James Telford; a sister, Jeanette Oles; a brother-in-law, Robert Oles; and a sister-in-law, Millie Telford.

Friends and relatives are invited to call from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 2, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the United Presbyterian Church, Walton, with the Rev. Dr. James F. Martin officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Howard’s memory may be made to the United Presbyterian Church, 58 East St., Walton, or the Walton Fire Department. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available by contacting the funeral home.
