Robert F. Calculli

ROXBURY — Robert F. "Bobby" Calculli, 37, Crystal River, Fla., died Saturday, April 9, 2005, in Gainesville, Fla., as the result of a motorcycle accident.

Born in Delhi, Robert was a New York Yankees fan and he enjoyed motorcycles and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert "Bob" Calculli, and his sister, Roberta Snyder.

Survivors include his two daughters, Crystal and Erica Calculli; his mother and stepfather, Lenora and Jacob Thompson; sisters Cathe Calculli and Nicole Thompson, and brother Algarin Thompson; his companion, Cheryl Robinson, her two children, Stephen and Austin; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Burial will be in the Roxbury Methodist Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Leslie Weir

FLY CREEK — Leslie Weir, 72, died Tuesday, July 5, 2005, at Valley Health Services in Herkimer.

Les, a lifelong resident of the Fly Creek area, was born Oct. 17, 1932, in Cooperstown, the son of Elial G. and Lulu (Thompson) Weir.

He graduated from Cooperstown High School with the class of 1950.

On March 14, 1954, he married Ethel Phoenix, and they lived and raised a family together on Parslow Road in Oaksville.

Les was known as a skilled carpenter, mechanic and mason and was involved in the construction of a number of local structures. During his early adulthood he also worked in many local garages, Thayer’s Garage and the Mohican Garage among them. He was a member of the Fly Creek Fire Department, a former member of the Cooperstown Fish and Game Club, and for the last seven years, he served his community as a member of the Otsego Town Board. He was also known to many for his fiddle playing with the "Weir Family Fiddlers."

"Tad," or "Tadpole," as many of his friends called him, was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, trap, fish and garden. He was an enthusiastic collector and saver. Among his collections is an extensive collection of baseball cards. He also loved to play cards, especially poker and blackjack. Les was a "people person." He loved people and made friends easily, in particular he cherished his family, always putting them first in everything he did.

Les is survived by his wife, Ethel, and his four children, Laurie Denmeade and her partner, Joe Pestar Sr., of Schuyler Lake, Deborah Pashley and her husband, Ronald, of Oaksville, Kim Jennings and her husband, Matthew, of Schuyler Lake, and Mark Weir and his wife, Maureen, of Fly Creek. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Jessica Hornagold (Robert), Melissa Pashley, Kristen Phillips, Elizabeth Weir, Catherine Pashley, Lacey Jennings, Daniel Bissell (Bobbi), Eric Phillips, Michael Pashley, Nicholas Weir, Christopher Jennings and Jeremy Denmeade, as well as by two great-grandchildren, Thomas Dygert and Linzee Bissell. In addition, Les is survived by his brothers, Keith "Doug" Weir (Evelyn) of North Syracuse, Kenneth "Doc" Weir of Baldwinsville, Carl Weir of Fruitland Park, Fla.; his two sisters, Doris Larsen of Oneonta and Violet "Buster" Schallert (John Sr.) of Fork Shop/Fly Creek; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Elial "Hi" G. Weir Jr., Danny "Boone" Weir, Rueben Weir, Donald "Don" Weir and Dorrance "Haunch" Weir.

Funeral services for Les will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 8, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, pastor of the Cherry Valley Presbyterian Church, officiating. The family will be present Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service to receive friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who so desire make a contribution in memory of Les to the Valley Health Services, Patient Development Fund, c/o Valley Health Services, 690 W. German St., Herkimer, NY 13350.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

James C. Ross

WEST DAVENPORT — James C. Ross, 87, of West Davenport died Monday, July 4, 2005, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

He was born Jan. 10, 1918, in New York City, the son of Alois and Helen (Fabri) Ross.

He married the late Mary Elenor Smith at Grace Methodist Church in Lindenhurst on April 14, 1940. She predeceased him in 2000.

Mr. Ross was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps as a line corporal where he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

A resident of West Davenport for 38 years, he previously resided in Lindenhurst for 45 years. His law enforcement career lasted from 1948 until 1969 and included duty with the Babylon Town Police and the Suffolk County Police, from which he retired. His memberships included the United Methodist Church of West Davenport; VFW Post 487, Davenport, where he served as post commander from 1992-1997; Charlotte Valley Cemetery Association; Davenport Senior Citizens; and Davenport Historical Society.

He is survived by two daughters, Jeanene (Jerald) Goncalves, Syracuse, and Jamie (Donald) Seacord, West Davenport; five grandchildren, William Goncalves, Syracuse, Mathew Goncalves, Syracuse, Patrick Goncalves, Syracuse, Pamela (Jeffry) Parnapy, Byron, and Gys (Cheryl) Seacord, Worcester; two great-grandchildren, Erin and Andrew Parnapy, Byron; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 7, at the United Methodist Church of West Davenport with the Rev. Nola Anderson officiating.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Burial will follow the service in Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport.

Contributions in his memory may be made to either the United Methodist Church of West Davenport or to the Charlotte Valley Cemetery Association.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Lillian C. Bennett

EDGEWATER, Fla. — Mrs. Lillian C. Bennett, 85, of Edgewater, Fla., and formerly of Cooperstown, died Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at the Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Reach, Fla.

She was born July 9, 1919, in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, a daughter of Oscar and Alice (Smith) Frising. Raised in Brooklyn, she graduated from high school there and later, with her husband, Raymond H. Bennett, owned and operated Rite Auto Sales, a cadillac dealership in Amityville on Long Island.

In 1974, Lillian moved to the Cooperstown area, where she became active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fly Creek Volunteer Fire Department. Since 1987, she resided in Florida. An avid fan of NASCAR racing, especially Jeff Gordon, she will be remembered as a loving and caring mom and grand mom.

Lillian is survived by Raymond H. Bennett of Florida; five daughters, Christine Tulli of Mesa, Ariz., Barbara Holcomb of Cooperstown, Lillian Pearsall of Holly Hill, Fla., Patricia Mullarkey of Newton, N.J., and Debra Bachorik of Hartwick; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; her companion, David Turner of Fly Creek, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her son, Raymond R. Bennett, who died Oct. 8, 1999, and one granddaughter, Kristy Mullarkey, who died March 29, 2004.

A time for sharing and visitation with Lillian’s family will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2005, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 1 Birchwood Drive, Dept. FH, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are with the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Raymond B. Gage

ROSEBOOM — Raymond B. Gage, 75, passed away Monday, July 4, 2005, at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born April 10, 1930, in Cooperstown, the son of Bernett and Edna (Rathbun) Gage.

On Nov. 5, 1950, he married Betty J. Tyler in Westville. She survives.

He was a lifelong area farmer and owned a trucking business for 15 years.

Besides his wife, Betty J. of Roseboom, he is survived by three sons, Denny and his wife, Roma, of Roseboom, Donnie and his wife, Maggie, of Roseboom, Ronnie and his wife, Becky, of Lawyersville; grandsons, Dan and Darrell of Roseboom; granddaughters, Lydia and Sara of Lawyersville; and godsons, Brian, Kevin, Stacy and Aaron VanBuren of Roseboom.

He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Gertrude Webster.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7, at Ottman Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating.

Burial will follow in the Roseboom Cemetery, Roseboom.

Calling hours will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mr. Gage’s memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad, PO Box 504, Cherry Valley, NY 13320 or The Busch Cancer Center at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

John G. Mercer

COOPERSTOWN — A graveside committal service for John G. Mercer, 65, of Melbourne, Fla., and Cooperstown, who died Feb. 8, 2005, in Melbourne, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 8, in the Fly Creek Cemetery, Fly Creek, with the Rev. William Highfield officiating.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Elizabeth "Betty" McVinney

ONEONTA – The committal service for Elizabeth "Betty" McVinney, who passed away March 3, 2005, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2005, at the Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen J. Cornwell, pastor at the Elm Park United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Lynn K. Weeks

SIDNEY — Lynn K. (Sonny) Weeks, 76, of Sidney died Wednesday, July 7, 2005, in Cooperstown.

He was born July 11, 1928, son of the late Theron and Pearl (Keough) Weeks in Sidney.

He married Annemarie Frisch on April 19, 1952.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Richard of Sidney, Ralph and wife Patricia of Ridgewood, N.J., and Paul and wife Kathy of Downey, Calif.; six grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Nellie B. Palombo

SIDNEY — Nellie B. Palombo of Sidney passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2005, in Baldwinsville.

She was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Nellie (Metcalf) Brown. She graduated from Bloomville High School and went to Spencer’s Business School in Kingston. Nellie worked for the National Bank of Hobart for three years and moved to Sidney in 1941. She was employed by the First National Bank of Sidney (NDT) until she retired as assistant vice president in 1981.

Nellie married Joseph Palombo in 1944. He predeceased her in 1972. She is also predeceased by her sisters, Rebecca Brown and Bertha Rose.

Mrs. Palombo is survived by her niece, Joan Len and husband Joseph of Skaneateles and their three children, Michael Len and his wife, Marita, Karen and husband Terry, and Gregory D. Len; her cousin, Mrs. Elizabeth Darling and her family of Stamford; and members of the Palombo family.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, July 11, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 11, from the First Congregational Church of Sidney. The Rev. Pat Robinson will officiate.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Sidney in Memory of Nellie B. Palombo.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Brianna Anderson

STAMFORD — Brianna Anderson, 11, left this earth to dance with angels Thursday, July 7, 2005, after a prolonged illness.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, George and Teresa Clapper; her grandmother; five aunts; three uncles; and numerous cousins. She will also be greatly missed by her family care provider, Beth Jackson of Sidney Center.

Calling hours and funeral service are by invitation only. The calling hours are 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 10, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford. Funeral service will follow immediately after calling hours, with the Rev. Waylen Bray officiating.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Grace E. Herr

DELANCEY — Grace E. Herr, 76, of DeLancey died Feb. 3, 2005, in Oneonta.

Grace was born in the town of Bovina on March 25, 1928, the daughter of the late Walter T. and Ina Lamb Robson. She was a graduate of Andes Central School, class of 1946.

On April 17, 1955, she married Francis Herr at Lake Delaware Episcopal Church. She assisted her husband in the operation of their farm.

She is survived by her loving husband, Fran.

She was predeceased by three brothers, John, Norris and George Robson, and a sister, Marge Campbell.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 9, in Andes Cemetery with the Rev. Dan McCollister officiating.
