Fred Moxham

DAVENPORT — Fred "Pete" L. Moxham Sr., 71, of Davenport died Saturday, July 9, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 25, 1934, in Harpersfield, the son of Emma Jane Lee.

He married Shirley Miller on July 17, 1955, in Meredith. She survives him.

Pete served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He worked on various dairy farms throughout the area for most of his life.

Pete was a very special person who touched many lives. Most of all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Pete will truly be missed by all those who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley of Davenport; his son, Fred Moxham Jr. and his wife, Dianne; his two daughters, Teresa Mattice and her husband, Ken, as well as Debbie Holbrook and her husband, Harry; eight grandchildren, Fred Moxham III, Michael Moxham and his wife, Amanda, Nicole V. Moxham, Jolene Hynes and her husband, Jon, Austin Wart, Tonia Holbrook, Tammy Holbrook and Tabatha Holbrook; three great-grandchildren, Fred Moxham IV, Andrew Moxham and Shaun Sylvestre; his brother, Albert Moxham and his wife, Marge; his uncle, Walter Moxham; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Pete was predeceased by his mother, Emma Jane Lee; a brother, Ernie Lee, as well as his mother-in-law, Dorothy Moxham.

A celebration of Pete’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2005, at the home of Richie and Volneta Stannard in Davenport.

The family would like to say a very special thank you to the nursing staff at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital for all of their help.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760, in loving memory of Fred "Pete" L. Moxham Sr.

Arrangements are with the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Donald H. Lewis

SARASOTA, Fla. — Donald H. Lewis, 94, Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Delhi, died June 25, 2005.

He was born July 30, 1910, in Elyria, Ohio, the son of Robert H. and Mable (Reynolds) Lewis.

He married Wanita Whitaker on Sept. 13, 1933, in Delhi. He was a resident of Delhi most of his life until becoming a resident of Florida in 1986.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe. Until his retirement in 1975, Mr. Lewis was president of R.H. Lewis & Son Inc. of Delhi, dealing in Buick Autos and GMC trucks.

He was very active in community affairs in Delhi. He was instrumental in construction of the original village swimming pool. He also worked on the O’Connor Hospital Fund drive, which realized a new building.

He was an avid golfer and was first president of the College Golf Club. He was a former Cub Scout Master and participated in many Boy Scout fund drives. He was an active member of the Second Presbyterian Church (now United Ministry) and a church trustee.

He was a director of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, a life member of Delhi Lodge No. 439, F.&A.M., a life member of Donald Gleason Post, Delhi, and a former member of Elks Lodge 1519, Sarasota, Rolling Green Golf Club and Northwinster Presbyterian Church, Sarasota.

Besides his wife of 71 years, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. David (Claire) Litsey, Rockville, Md.; two sons, Stephen R. Lewis, Delhi, and John E. Lewis, Unadilla; one brother, Robert H. Lewis, Delhi; one grandson, William Goodnough, Hagerstown, Md.; two great-granddaughters; and several nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at the United Ministry of Delhi at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2005.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Ministry of Delhi or Hospice of Southwest, Fla., 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Local arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi.

Ralph Apicella

ONEONTA — Ralph Apicella, of Maryland passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at home.

Ralph was born July 1, 1919, in Brooklyn, the son of Gaetano and Pasqalina (Pisani) Apicella.

He married his wife, Pennie, in Mastic Beach.

Ralph served his country in the United States Army during World War II, achieving the rank of staff sergeant.

He worked as a manager for A&P in Brooklyn before retiring. He was a Little League manager in Oneonta. He was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.

He enjoyed woodworking and working in his garden. He was an avid New York Mets fan.

He is survived by his wife, Pennie Apicella of Maryland; son, Robert Apicella of Oneonta; granddaughter, Eileen Philips and her husband, Andrew, of Farmingville, Long Island; grandson, Anthony Apicella of San Francisco, Calif.; four stepchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and a brother, Benjamin Apicella of Verona, N.J.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Christina, in 1977; his son, Ralph Apicella, in 1991; his three brothers, Fred, Mike and Anthony; and three sisters, Kate, Jessie and Anna.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at which time the family will be in attendance.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2005, in St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the National Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island, at 2 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2005.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ethel Castronover

WEST WINFIELD — Ethel M. Castronover, 76, of West Winfield passed away July 9, 2005, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Oneonta, the daughter of Maurice and Nellie Mc Ilwain.

In 1966, Ethel married Dominick L. Castronover.

A lifetime resident of West Winfield, Mrs. Castronover was employed with Cowell Pharmacy for many years and later with Zoller Insurance Agency.

She was very active in the community and was awarded "Woman of the Year" by the Rotary Club of West Winfield for her outstanding contributions.

"Sis" will be remembered for her great heart, generous ways and loving spirit.

Survivors include her husband, Dominick of West Winfield; her daughter, Donna Dewan of Milford; and son-in-law, Greg Baldinger of Milford.

Calling hours at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, 365 West Main St., West Winfield, are from 9:30 until 11 a.m. Wednesday, at which time the Rev. Frank Alagna will conduct funeral services.

Walter Paul Dolan

COOPERSTOWN — Walter Paul Dolan, 76, of Pierstown passed away at home on Stockingbrook on Monday afternoon, July 11, 2005, with his family by his side, after a long and valiant battle with cancer.

He was born May 9, 1929, in St. Raphael’s Hospital in New Haven, Conn., a son of William E. and Mary Elizabeth (Sheehan) Dolan.

He married Beatrice Emilia Varvaro on Dec. 12, 1953, in Sacred Heart Church in Suffern.

Raised in New Jersey, Walter graduated from Ridgewood High School with the class of 1947 and then attended Manhattan College, graduating in 1951. After graduation, he enlisted for duty with United States Air Force and served with the 96th Fighter Interceptor Squadron during the Korean War. In 1956, he was honorably discharged as a 1st lieutenant.

Walter and Bea then made their home in Mahwah, N.J., where they raised a family of four children, and he enjoyed a 34-year career in marketing with IBM. Upon retiring in 1990, Walter and Bea relocated to Cooperstown to live in their dream home, a barn.

Walter has served on the Parish Council at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown and was active there as a lector and Eucharistic Minister.

A longtime member of the Board of Directors of Friends of Bassett, he served on the Golf Committee, the Bassett Gala Committee and the Gala Silent Auction Committee. Walter was a longtime supporter of The Mohican Club where he served on the Board of Governors, and was also a member of the Rotary Club. He had a passion for golf and for many years was subscriber at the Leatherstocking Golf Course.

Walter is survived by his wife of 52 years, Beatrice of Pierstown; two daughters, Marina Hoge and her husband, Duncan, and their children, Andrew, Brian and Brandon of Sunbury, Ohio, and Barbara Cannon and her husband, Douglas Cannon, M.D., and their children, Elizabeth Galietto, Ann and Douglas Cannon of Cooperstown; two sons, John F. Dolan and his wife, Kathleen, and their children, Kelly, Kristen and Anthony of Mahwah, N.J., and Tim Dolan and his wife, Debra, and their children, Liam and Emilia of Glen Ridge, N.J.; two brothers, Harry VanTassel and his wife, Laurie, and William Dolan and his wife, Peg, all of Sarasota, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends.

Walter truly enjoyed his family, most especially the many happy visits he and his wife, Beatrice, shared with their 11 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Edward J. VanTassel.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2005, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Immediately after the Mass, all are invited to join with Walter’s family in the St. Mary’s Parish Center for a time of refreshment and fellowship.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2005, when Walter’s family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 1 Birchwood Drive, Department FH, Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

The Dolan family wishes to express their deep appreciation to both organizations for all their fine work, compassion and dedication to all afflicted with this terrible disease.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Ellen Johansen

COOPERSTOWN — Ellen Johansen, 92, a resident of the Cooperstown and Milford area for all of her adult life, died May 2, 2005, at the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home in Ilion.

Ellen, who was born July 29, 1912, in Lincoln, Neb., was the daughter of John and Johanna Nielsen. As a young child, she moved with her family to upstate New York.

On Jan. 16, 1932, she married Helge Johansen at the Lutheran Church in Laurens. He predeceased her in 1996.

Ellen was a homemaker. She was an accomplished cook and needlepointer. She loved entertaining and especially enjoyed hosting large parties. She was well-known for the effortless and gracious way that she made her guests feel welcome. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to Scandinavia, the home of her ancestors.

Ellen is survived by her daughter, Greta Uncur of Little Falls; her four grandchildren, Catherine McCabe (Michael) of Rochester, David Uncur (Mary Gayle) of Chesapeake, Va., Sharon Uncur of Little Falls, and Johanna O’Donnell (Capt. Jeffrey) of Manheim, Germany. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Bryan and Sean Uncur of Chesapeake, Va., and Nora and Nicholas O’Donnell of Manheim, Germany.

Graveside services will be held in the Milford Cemetery, Milford, at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2005, with the Rev. John Young of Schuyler Lake officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who so desire make contributions in Ellen’s memory to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Elizabeth Hellinger

COLUMBUS, OHIO — Mrs. Elizabeth Ann (Bette) Hellinger, 74, of Columbus, Ohio, died Wednesday night, July 6, 2005, at Ohio State University Hospital.

Born May 20, 1931, in Cooperstown, she was a daughter of Albert and Mary (Viziak) Domion.

She married Alvin W. Hellinger on June 18, 1950, in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Richfield Springs. Mr. Hellinger died Oct. 30, 1969.

After 31 years of service, she retired from Ohio State University, where she was employed as a fiscal officer.

Bette is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lisa Kit Hellinger Matulich and her husband, Josef P. Matulich, of Worthington, Ohio, and Wendy Jane Hellinger of Louisiana; three grandchildren, Matthew Hellinger and his wife, Jackie, Rachel Wilkins Hollar and her husband, Paul, and Aidan Josef Matulich; and one sister, Mary Jane Domion.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one granddaughter, Alyssa Kit Hellinger Matulich, who died March 22, 1995, and one brother, Albert Domion Jr., who died Aug. 13, 1946.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2005, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Richfield Springs, with Fr. Terence Healy, sacramental minister, presiding. The Rite of Committal and burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Richfield Springs.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to The Easter Seal Society of Central Ohio, 565 Children’s Drive West, PO Box 7166, Columbus, OH 43205.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Flora Clarke

ONEONTA — Flora "Midge" Clarke, a longtime resident of Middletown, died in Oneonta on Monday, July 11, 2005, after an extended illness. She was 96 years old.

She was predeceased by her husband, R. Edgar Clarke, her twin sister, Laura Banks, and her nephew, Robert Banks.

She is survived by her son, Richard Clarke of Jupiter Beach, Fla.; her daughter, Marilyn Wesley of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Jay Hayes, Jordan Hayes and Carolyn Clarke; her nephew, John Banks; and her niece, Doris Velsor.

Active in Middletown charitable organizations, including the Horton Hospital and Meals on Wheels, Mrs. Clarke was employed as a bookkeeper and an owner of R. Edgar Clarke Inc.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.
