ANDES — The Rev. George E. Calvert, 76, of Andes passed away Sunday afternoon, July 17, 2005, at his home, succumbing to cancer, after an illness of 20 months. He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Stuart Calvert.

The son of Robert and Mary Siggers Calvert, he was born Nov. 12, 1928, in Evanston, Ill., raised in Scarsdale, graduated from Amherst College in 1950, and received his Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in 1954.

During the next 46 years, Rev. Calvert worked and lived in the inner city neighborhood of East Harlem, where he served as pastor for the East Harlem Protestant Parish and later for the Church of the Living Hope.

He enjoyed singing tenor in his church choir and with the Cantico Nuevo.

Since moving to Andes in 1997 at the age of 69, his inveterate enthusiasm and charisma have been focused on organizing and taking leadership in a series of Andes-related initiatives: notably the Annual Community Day, Chamber of Commerce, Presbyterian Church, Sewer Project, Andes Gazette, and the restoration of the Bruce Inn.

At 74, he became an emergency medical technician for the all-volunteer Andes Emergency Squad.

Calvert is also survived by his brother, Robert of Garrett Park, Md.; four sons and their wives, David and Theresa of Mexico City, Mexico, Jonathan and Margaret of Brooklyn, Peter and Suzanne of Richmond, Va., and James and Betty of Atlanta, Ga.; and nine grandchildren, Emily, Andre, Ana, Daniel, Marie, Elizabeth, Jasmine, Henry and Kathryn.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, at the Andes Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Daniel McCollister will officiate, and burial will follow in the Andes Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to any of the following charities: Church of the Living Hope, 161 East 104 St., NYC 10029; Andes Presbyterian Church, PO Box 299, Andes, 13731; or Andes Emergency Squad, Andes, NY 13731.
