H. Everett Simmons

HOBART — H. Everett Simmons, 81, of Hobart died Thursday, July 28, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born March 27, 1924, in Harpersfield, the son of Harry and Lillian (Carmody) Simmons.

He married Barbara Leman Cole on Dec. 7, 1994, in the Hobart United Methodist Church.

A lifelong area resident, he was a self-employed electrician who loved to build and invent things.

Spending time with his family was important to him.

Everett was the founder of the Gun House Hill Trap Shooters and enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting, reloading ammunition and working with guns.

His wife, Barbara, survives, as do two sons, Philip (Bonnie) Simmons and David Simmons and his friend, Jo-Ellen Reeder; three stepchildren, Susan (Thomas) O’Brien, David (Karen) Cole and Sally (Kuziua) Chinawa. He also leaves grandchildren, William Simmons, and Stacey, Stephanie and Carley Simmons; a great-granddaughter, Bonnie Lee Simmons; and stepgrandchildren, Lindsay and Matthew O’Brien, Michael, Jenna, and Shane Cole, and Shannon and Ryan Hitt; and three sisters, Winnie Augusta, Edith Weatherby and Eleanor Pickett; and a brother, Edgar Simmons.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Esther Lape Simmons, and two brothers, Donald and William Simmons.

Calling hours were held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2005, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 1, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with Pastor Elliott Oakes officiating.

Burial will follow the service in Harpersfield Cemetery, Harpersfield.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Pauline McCumber

UNADILLA — Pauline O. McCumber, 86, of The Otsego Manor, Cooperstown, and formerly of Unadilla, passed away Friday, July 29, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, after a brief illness.

She was born Nov. 15, 1918, in the town of Unadilla, the daughter of the late Fred and Marcia (Smith) Sowles.

She was married to Harold D. McCumber on Nov. 15, 1938, in Unadilla. Mr. McCumber predeceased her in 1973.

Pauline was a lifelong resident of Unadilla and enjoyed playing cards and bingo. She also loved being involved with her family and friends.

She was a member of the Gilbertsville Grange, Sand Hill United Methodist Church and the Wells Bridge Senior Citizens.

Pauline is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Irene McCumber of Burlington Flats; her daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy C. Garrison of Oneonta, Anne and Edward Lyman of Loudonville, and Sally and Lewis Gage of Oneonta; her sister, Florence Cook of Johnson City; her grandchildren, Terry McCumber, Kelly Tavarone, Kary Trocchia, Kevin McCumber and Nicholas Lyman. She is also survived by three great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Pauline O. McCumber for family and friends will be announced at a later date.

There will be no public calling hours at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

For those who wish to make memorial contributions, the family requests they be made to Sand Hill United Methodist Church, 127 Sand Hill Road, Unadilla, NY 13849 in memory of Pauline O. McCumber.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St. Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Alvin R. LaPlant

EAST WORCESTER — Alvin R. LaPlant Jr., 54, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, July 28, 2005, in Binghamton.

He was born Oct. 28, 1950, in Cobleskill, the son of Alvin R. LaPlant Sr. and Laura L. (Jeffers) LaPlant.

Alvin was a United States Marine Corps veteran, serving his country during the Vietnam War from 1969-1974. He was the recipient of many awards, including the Vietnam Service, Campaign and National Defense Service Medals, Navy Unit Commendation, Combat Action Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Commendation.

He was an avid outdoorsman and a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club.

Alvin is survived by three daughters, Lisa LaPlant of Fort Plain, Laura and her husband, Bryan, Ferris of East Worcester, and Michelle LaPlant of Schenevus; his mother, Laura, of East Worcester; two brothers, Tim and his wife, Kim, of Summit and Joseph of Gansevoort; one sister, Janice and her husband, Marshal, of Schuylerville; and several grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and some very special friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Alvin Sr.; a son, Walter; a nephew, Joey, and several aunts and uncles.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005, in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, with the Rev. Dr. George I. Goodwin Jr., retired, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5 Oak St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Jeanne Silvernail

OTEGO — Jeanne L. Silvernail, 85, of Otego passed away Friday, July 29, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born April 2, 1920, in Paris, France.

She was married to Howard N. Silvernail on July 28, 1961, in New Orleans, La.

Jeanne was a retired employee of Amphenol Corp. of Sidney.

She is survived by her husband, Howard N. Silvernail, of Otego; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert York of Otego and Louis and Eileen York of Acton, Mass.; two grandchildren, Elizabeth York and Brian York of Acton, Mass. She is also survived by two nieces.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Thomas S. Lum

BUTTERNUTS — Thomas S. Lum, 69, of the town of Butternuts passed away Friday, July 29, 2005, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Thomas was born Aug. 5, 1935, in the town of Butternuts, the son of Stanley and Rachael (Head) Lum.

He spent his childhood in the town of Butternuts and attended Gilbertsville and New Berlin central schools.

He worked for several local farmers.

Thomas is survived by his two brothers, Theodore Lum, Leonardsville, and Walter Lum, Leonardsville; four sisters, Catherine Dugan, Auburn, Frances Keene, Oneida, Alice Nichols, South New Berlin, and Janice Simmons, Fayetteville; and several nieces and nephews. He also is survived by his companion, Becky Morey of Tennessee.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Keith and James (Red) Lum; and one sister, Mary Welch.

Calling hours are from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 1, 2005, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Randolph Palada of the Gilbertsville Baptist Church officiating.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home L.P., New Berlin.

Margaret Schmitt

ONEONTA — Mrs. Gussie (Margaret) P. Schmitt, 93, a longtime resident of the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a three-day stay.

She was born Sept. 22, 1911, in East Meredith, the daughter of Norman C. and Nora (Blair) Parris.

Margaret married Harry Beames Jr. in 1935. Mr. Beames predeceased her in 1939. In May 1945, Margaret married Gussie Schmitt. Mr. Schmitt predeceased her June 27, 1994. After the death of her first husband, she and her infant daughter lived with the Dewey Taylor family at Davenport. Margaret managed the household and cared for Mrs. Taylor, who was blind.

In 1945, she moved to Oneonta and resided on Center Street. Later she moved to Chamberlain Hill in Franklin, where she lived for 35 years, and she drove a school bus for the Franklin Central School for 17 years.

After suffering a stroke that limited her mobility, she and Gussie moved to the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was a member of the Aldrich Baptist Church for 35 years and was the part-time organist. She was active in church activities, senior citizen groups and historical societies.

Her wealth of information is documented in many published materials. Writing was her passion for all of her life. She kept a daily journal, wrote letters to all she knew, and her letters signed "M. Schmitt" were often found on the editorial page of The Daily Star.

Margaret is survived by her three children and their spouses, Karyl and Robert Sage of Oneonta, Linda and Richard Ackley of Wells Bridge and Paul A. Schmitt of Columbus, Ohio; one stepdaughter and her husband, Maryann and T.M. Mandeville of Port Townsend, Wash.; two stepdaughters-in-law, Patricia Droubay of Novato, Calif., and Betty Schmitt of Jefferson: three grandchildren, Christopher, Jonathan and Allison; seven stepgrandchildren, Dona, Diane, Gary, Roxanne, Larry, Steve and Mark; three great-grandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Margaret is also survived by many wonderful caregivers and friends at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was predeceased by one sister, Grace Jones; one niece, Stella Pearsall; two stepsons, Robert and Gordon Schmitt; and one stepgrandson, Michael.

A service to celebrate the life of Margaret P. Schmitt will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, at the Aldrich Baptist Church, state Highway 28, North Franklin, with co-pastors Richard Sliter and Patricia Judd officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends are welcome to sign the register book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Aldrich Baptist Church, Treasurer, 11474 State Highway 357, Franklin, NY 13775 in loving memory of Margaret P. Schmitt.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Bruce C. Cook

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Bruce Cameron Cook, 49, of Cherry Valley passed away at his home July 31, 2005.

He was born June 14, 1956, in Cooperstown, the son of Austin MacIntyre and Madeline (Ennis) Cook, both deceased.

On Nov. 1, 1975, he married the former Tina Mowrey.

He was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, class of 1974.

Bruce worked as an analytical laboratory technician at Lifesavers of Canajoharie for 15 years.

He received his degree in welding from the Modern School of Welding, Schenectady. He welded on New York state bridges for 10 years, also working for Conrail for two years. During this time he owned and operated his own business, Cooks Excavation and Welding. He also worked for the MOSA transfer station at Fly Creek.

He took great pride in his work and loved to meet people. Bruce enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, fishing and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Tina; and his daughter, Lindsay, both of Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Bruce’s memory are asked to be sent to Ms. Lindsay M. Cook, 105 Willie O’Neil Road, Cherry Valley, NY 13320.

There will be a memorial service at 6 p.m. Aug. 4, 2005, at the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, state Highway 20, Leesville, with the Rev. Gary Edmister officiating.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Marjorie Glover

GUILFORD — Marjorie Glover, 79, of Guilford passed away July 31, 2005, at the Oneonta Nursing Center, Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 7, 1925, in Guilford, the daughter of the late Louis and Dorothy (Curtis) Ives.

On June 3, 1945, in the Guilford United Methodist Church, she married Norman Glover, who passed away Jan. 12, 2004.

She is survived by her children, Mitch and Vickie Glover of Sidney and Sheri Lobdell of Norwich; her sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Raymond Wessels of Guilford; her grandchildren, John and Emma Lobdell of Buchanan, Va., Mary Lobdell of Oxford, Jennie Lobdell of Oxford, Nichole and Mike Peck of Sidney and Todd Glover of Delmar; and her great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Benson McGillicuddy and Brody and Mason Lobdell. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Her brothers, Leon Ives, Seward Ives, Selwyn Ives, and sister, Marie Fiorina predeceased her.

She was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother, especially enjoying attending her grandchildren’s events.

She was a former Girl Scout leader and a lifelong resident of Guilford. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed cooking and knitting.

Private funeral services will be at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford, with the Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor of the Church of the Holy Apostles of Norwich, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Guilford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Guilford Emergency Squad or one’s favorite charity.
