Harrie A. Fraser

SIDNEY — Harrie A. Fraser, 86, of 38 West Main St., Sidney, formerly of Delhi and Hancock, passed away Friday morning, Aug. 5, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born May 25, 1919, in Fraser, the son of the late Harrie R. and Bessie Pomeroy Fraser.

Harrie was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country during WWII as a chaplain’s assistant.

Mr. Fraser was a music teacher at Hancock Central School for 25 years. He retired June 30, 1979.

Harrie was the organist for several area churches: First Baptist Church of Hancock, First Baptist Church of Otego, First Southern Baptist Church of Sidney and Delhi United Methodist Church for more than 13 years. He was the manager of the Clothing Closet of the First Southern Baptist Church of Sidney. In the past several years, he played for the residents of the Sidney Skilled Nursing Facility.

He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Uwe Boecke of Walton; three nephews, John and Diane Boecke of Walton, Robert and Cindy Boecke of Walton and Eric Boecke of Walton; and a niece, Linda and Joseph Wild of Mumford. Also surviving are several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Trowbridge.

Friends are invited to call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, before the service at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Harold Lefler officiating.

Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, or to the Humane Society of Delaware County.

William Sterchak

SIDNEY — William T. Sterchak, 78, of Star Route, Sidney, passed away Friday morning, Aug. 5, 2005, at his residence.

He was born April 14, 1927, in Jermyn, Pa., the son of the late Andrew and Mary Turinsky Sterchak.

On May 20, 1950, he married Clare Sherosick in Forest City, Pa.

Bill was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country during WWII. He was a retired supervisor for the Amphenol-Bendix Corp. in Newport News, Va.

Mr. Sterchak was a member of the Sacred Heart Church of Sidney and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Clare Sterchak of Sidney; three sons and a daughter-in-law, William Sterchak of Wylie, Texas, Robert Sterchak of Masonville and John and Barbara Sterchak of Guilford; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and William Doyle of Prospect, Ky., and Dr. Barbara and Ian Chapman of Campbelltown, Australia; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Gruden of Pompano Beach, Fla., Olga and Albert Dyno of Pennsylvania and Dorothy and Andrew Zapatosky of Pennsylvania; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Andrew and Shirley Sterchak of Massachusetts and Stephen and Ruth Sterchak; and eight grandchildren, Nicholas, Stanley, Gwendolyn, Stephen, Peter, William, Molly and Andrew. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A sister, Ann Brown, predeceased her brother.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Monday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel at 21 Main St., Sidney. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the Yaleville Cemetery, Guilford.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to The Sidney Hospital Foundation, Pearl Street, Sidney, NY 13838.

Eleanor D. Mravlja

WESTFORD — Eleanor D. Mravlja, 89, of Westford passed away peacefully at home Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005.

She was born Aug. 14, 1915, in Utica, the daughter of Arthur and Mary (Ritzel) Albright.

Eleanor married Alton Mravlja on Dec. 13, 1941. He predeceased her Aug. 18, 1987.

Mrs. Mravlja spent most of her adult life in education. After graduating high school, she attended the College of St. Rose in Albany. She completed her college degree at the New York State Teachers College at Oneonta Normal School.

Her first teaching job was in a one-room schoolhouse in Elk Creek. After the closing of the Elk Creek School, she taught in the Westford Union Free School and the Schenevus School on Arch Street. In 1942, when the Andrew S. Draper Central School was opened, Mrs. Mravlja went to teach and retired from there after 35 years. She continued tutoring for many years after her retirement.

Mrs. Mravlja was involved in many church activities, and was a member of the St. Joseph’s Altar Rosary Society.

Her two main interests were reading mysteries and spending time with her family.

She is survived by three sons, John Mravlja and his special friend, Connie, of Gillette, Wyo., Peter Mravlja and his wife, Anka, of Westford, and Andrew Mravlja and his wife, Nina, also of Gillette, Wyo.; one daughter, Marilyn MacLean and her husband, Robert, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and special friends.

She was predeceased by a son, Thomas Mravlja, and two sisters, Lillian and Gertrude.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, with a Rosary service at 7:30 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 155 Main St., Worcester.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church Cemetery, Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Eleanor to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820 or The At Home Care, 297 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Orley J. Wormsley

WELLS BRIDGE — Orley John Wormsley, devoted husband and father, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at his home. He was 80.

He was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Shinhopple, the son of Orley J. and Jenny (Decker) Wormsley.

He married Frances Louise Davis on June 30, 1944, in Roscoe. Mrs. Wormsley died Feb. 8, 2005.

A lifelong area resident, Orley worked for the Bendix Corporation for 35 years as a truck driver until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of Retired Aerospace Workers of America.

Orley is survived by three children, William (Diane), Jalna Rudolph and Robert (Tracy); a daughter-in-law, Bobbie Wormsley; his grandchildren, Michael Rudolph Jr. (Amy), Mark Rudolph (Alonna), Patai Wormsley, Tonya Peterman, Christopher Wormsley (Haley) and Erin Wormsley; five great-grandchildren, Taylor and Alexis Peterman, Benjamin Rudolph, Matthew Rudolph and Isaiah Wormsley. He is also survived by a sister, Ann Fredenburg of Otego; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Louise; two sons, (John, who died April 12, 2005, and Clarence, who died in infancy); his twin brother, Warren Wormsley; and two sisters, Ruth Banks and Margaret McAdams.

A graveside committal service for Orley J. Wormsley and Frances L. Wormsley will be held in the Long Flats Cemetery in Downsville at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Drive, Department FH, Oneonta, NY 13820-1319 in memory of Orley J. Wormsley.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Otego.

David E. Eccleston

MOUNT UPTON — David Edgar Eccleston, 52, of Mount Upton passed away Aug. 2, 2005, in Zion, Ill.

David was born Feb. 13, 1953, in Norwich, the son of Howard and Pearl (Beadle) Eccleston.

He married Sheila Hendricks on Aug. 24, 2002. She survives.

He spent his childhood in the New Berlin area. He was a 1971 graduate of New Berlin Central School.

He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed golfing, bowling and hunting.

He was employed by Mead Westvaco in Sidney.

David was a former member of the New Berlin Fire Department.

David is survived by his children, James Eric Eccleston, Mount Vision, and Larissa Pearl Eccleston, Mount Upton; three stepchildren, Stephen Baker II, Mount Upton, Andrew Baker, Mount Upton, and Sarah Baker, Bainbridge; one grandchild, Stephen Baker III; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Also survived by his brothers, Howard Eccleston, New Berlin, James Eccleston, New Berlin, and Barry Eccleston, Stuart, Fla.

He was predeceased by one son, David Scott Eccleston.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005, at the Dakin Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to Chenango County Hospice.

Lillian C. Brown

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Lillian C. Brown, 65, of South New Berlin passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, in Cooperstown.

She was born Dec. 21, 1939, in the town of New Berlin, the daughter of Osmer and Myrtle (Meyers) Beadle.

Lillian married Kenneth Brown on Sept. 13, 1958. He survives.

She spent her childhood in Holmesville. She attended South New Berlin School.

Lillian is survived by her children, Tina and Kevin Wilson of Morris, PJ and Deb Brown of South New Berlin, Dale Sr. and Shelly Brown of Edmeston and Sue and Kevin Tomsic of Norwich; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five sisters, Jennie Carpenter of Norwich, Betty and Tom Stone of Mount Upton, Cora and Harold Moore of Norwich, Doris and Ron Smeltzer of Endicott and Lavina Clum of Norwich; two brothers, Bob and Pat Beadle of South New Berlin and Ed Beadle of Texas; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was predeceased by one sister, Pearl Ecceleston, and her brothers Clarence, John, Bill, George and Richard Beadle.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Funeral services for Mrs. Brown will be private.

Donations may be made to the South New Berlin Emergency Squad or to the American Cancer Society.

Lillian was a loving and devoted wife, mother and (Gran).

She loved to play bingo at the Pittsfield Fire Hall on Friday nights.

Funeral arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Alice Freeman

SIDNEY — Alice Freeman of Sidney passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She is survived by three daughters, Maria Nieves, Unadilla, Doreen Lanza, Sidney, and Carmella Tiani, Toms River, N.J.; two sons, Domenic Molinare, Bensonhurst, and Michael Molinare, Brooklyn; two brothers; two sisters; 31 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her son, Rocky Molinare; and two grandsons, Isaac Nieves and David Molinare.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at the Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dollars for Scholars, Isaac Nieves Memorial Scholarship, Sidney Federal Credit Union, 42 Union St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Mae Jane Handy

COOPERSTOWN JUNCTION — Mae Jane (Hillsinger) Handy, 85, of Cooperstown Junction died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, at Otsego Manor.

She was born Feb. 29, 1920, in Oneonta, the daughter of Leon and Anna (Simmons) Hillsinger.

On Sept. 18, 1943, Mae married Henry Jacob Handy Sr. in Oneonta. Mr. Handy predeceased her July 31, 1983.

She enjoyed the outdoors and taking part in activities such as playing cards, bingo, listening to country music and going to auctions.

Mae was a member of the Milford Center Community Bible Church and enjoyed going to church on Sundays.

She is survived by her three children, Henry Jacob Handy Jr. of Cooperstown Junction, Charles Handy of Cooperstown Junction and Barbara (Handy) Darling and her husband, George Darling Jr., of Hartwick; and four sisters, Grace Hume, Violet "Roxie" Baker, Evelyn Nesbitt and Dorothy Ellis.

Mae was predeceased by two sisters, Ida and Pearl.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Steve Fournier, pastor of the Milford Center Community Bible Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.
