Rudolph H. Blythe

GAINESVILLE — Dr. Rudolph H. Blythe of Gainesville, a pioneering industrial scientist and educator whose research led to the development of the timed-release capsule, died Friday, July 22, 2005, in Vero Beach after a brief illness. He was 95.

Dr. Blythe was born in Roxbury in 1910. He was a 1931 graduate of The Albany College of Pharmacy and received his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical chemistry from Columbia University in 1933.

He established the first pharmaceutical research laboratory in the United States at Smith Kline and French Laboratories in Philadelphia, now the pharmaceutical giant Glaxo Smith-Kline. His research led to the development of the time-release capsule, a breakthrough for which he won the Ebert Prize. Established in 1873, the Ebert Prize is the oldest pharmacy award in the United States. He retired from the pharmaceutical company in 1966.

That same year, Dr. Blythe came to Gainesville, accepting an appointment as associate professor of pharmacy at the University of Florida. He was appointed the first assistant dean for the College of Pharmacy in 1970. He retired from the university in 1975.

Paul Doering, distinguished service professor of pharmacy, recalled Dr. Blythe as a colleague and friend.

"He was an old-school pharmacist and researcher, an open and honest sort of guy," Doering said Monday. "When he retired for the second time, he continued to make Gainesville his home. I would run into him at The Village and was always surprised at how ageless he seemed."

Doering said any pharmacist of his generation would recall Dr. Blythe fondly.

"He touched many lives here in the College of Pharmacy, even though he was a low-profile person," he said. "He packed a lot of pharmacy into those years."

Dr. Blythe was also a philanthropist who in 2000 pledged $1 million for research funding at his alma mater, the Albany College of Pharmacy. It was the largest gift in the college’s 110-year history.

He was a Mason.

Dr. Blythe was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Skivens Blythe, whom Doering remembers as an artist who left her own mark on the community; and son, Rudolph H. Blythe Jr.

He is survived by his son, George Blythe of Vero Beach; a daughter, Elizabeth Karow of Gainesville; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, for Rudolph and his wife, Dorothy, in the Roxbury Cemetery in Roxbury with the Rev. Richard Dykstra, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
