Amanda E. Franco

STAMFORD — Amanda E. Franco, 84, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born in Brooklyn on July 5, 1921, the daughter of Ernst and Ella Sommers.

She met Frank Franco in 1935 at the age of 14. After a long courtship the two were married in 1942. They lived in Brooklyn in the early years of their marriage before relocating to Springfield Gardens. They stayed there until 1968, when they moved to Deer Park. They would remain there for the next 34 years of their lives. In December 2002, the couple moved to upstate New York. Amanda had resided in Stamford for the past three years.

Amanda will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She devoted her life to the raising of her children and grandchildren. She never had any complaints and always cared for everyone no matter what the circumstance. She always put others ahead of herself. Her family was her life.

She will be remembered by her husband of 63 years, Frank Franco; and her children, Frank Franco of Wyndanch, Long Island, Michael Franco and wife Julie of Islip Terrace, Long Island, Nina Barber and her husband, George, of Stamford, Robert Franco and wife Kathy of Woodburne, and Mary Gaddis and her husband, Chris, of Stamford.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Joanne Donaldson of Stamford.

Also surviving Amanda are her 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 15, 2005, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, by Father Michael Cournoyer at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford. Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Francis K. Barker

SIDNEY — Francis K. Barker, 69, died from leukemia while at home in Sidney on Friday, Aug. 12, 2005.

Known as Keith Barker to friends and family, he was the great-grandson of the great Phil Christy, who was well-known for his early exploits in the Adirondack Mountains and served as a hunting guide for five United States presidents.

Keith’s grandfather was a well-known steamboat captain and merchant on the Folton chain of lakes.

Born June 10, 1936, in Old Forge, Keith soon exhibited the same restless sense of adventure as his grandfathers.

After graduating from the town of Webb High School in Old Forge, Keith joined the Navy. After completing a tour of duty in the Navy, he joined the Air Force and continued his tour of Europe.

In 1966, he settled back in Old Forge and was employed as a police officer for the town of Webb. Four years later he moved to the New Berlin area were he worked as chief of police for the village of New Berlin.

In 1975, he became the highway superintendent for the town of New Berlin, where he worked until retirement in 1993.

Keith was best known for his love of motorcycle riding, Keith’s legacy and adventurous spirit lives on in his three children, Bonnie, Connie, Keith, and six grandchildren.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Tuesday Aug. 16, 2005, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney, with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder of Franklin officiating.

Burial with military honors will be at the convenience of his family in the Riverview Cemetery, Old Forge.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Department FH, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Jesse I. Davis

MARYLAND — Jesse I. Davis, 88, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born Sept. 7, 1916, in Middle Hope, the son of Ambrose M. and Mabel (Christian) Davis.

Mr. Davis married Esther Conley on Jan. 1, 1944, in Joplin, Mo.

He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945, serving with the Signal Corps during World War II in the Southeast Asia Command. Mr. Davis retired after 32 years of employment at New York Telephone Co. in Potsdam, where he was a switching electrical technician. He also worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp. for several years.

Mr. Davis was very active in various Christian churches. He was a member of the VFW, Telephone Pioneers of America, the Communication Workers of America, the Odd Fellows, the Masonic Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Davis, of Maryland; a son, Gary and his wife, Sandra, Davis of Chugiak, Alaska; grandchildren, Brian, Kerri, Daryl, Nancy, Jesse David, Christopher, Carl James, Becky, Bonnie, Michael, Vicky and Cheryl; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Alaka Skinner; a son, Conley Davis; three grandson, Brett, Scott and Jon Kerry; a granddaughter, Melissa; two sisters, Doris Scrambling and Betty Prihoda; and a brother, Ernest Davis.

A memorial graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, in the Schenevus Cemetery, with the Rev. Roger Best and the Rev. Stephen Fournier officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Marian A. Byington

ONEONTA — Marian A. Byington, 80, passed away Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at her home.

She was born April 29, 1925, in Hamden, the daughter of William H. and Elsie B. (Grey) Carey.

She married Donald W. Byington on April 30, 1942. He predeceased her in 1999.

Mrs. Byington was a laboratory technician and manager at the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton for 27 years.

She is survived by her children, Donald G. and wife Jeanette Byington of Manchester, N.J., Beverly B. and husband John Biggar of Troy, Sharon L. Devaney of Lafayette, Timothy D. and wife Sherrie Byington of Downsville, and Barbara A. Byington of Oneonta; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a sister, Vera Schmitt of Oneonta; a brother, Glenn Carey of Martinsville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Gaston; a brother, Burton Carey; and a great-grandson, Brandon Reed.

At the request of Mrs. Byington, there will be no services.

Memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Byington to the Brandon Reed Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of Downsville Central School, Downsville, NY 13755.

Arrangements are by the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Seward Merrill

SIDNEY — Seward "Scoop" Merrill, 92, a resident at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home and formerly of Sidney, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, Aug. 10, 2005, in Oneonta.

He was born June 12, 1913, in Sidney, the son of the late Frank O. and Orlena Strader Merrill.

Seward was employed by Agway of Sidney and later was employed by David Orton of the Riverlea Farms, Sidney.

Seward was one of seven children, Alice Merrill Smith, Mary Merrill McGinty, Hazel Merrill, Frank O. Merrill Jr., Harry and Lawrence Merrill.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends are invited to call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder of Franklin officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Funeral Directors, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Edith R. Brannen

ANDES — Edith R. Brannen, 86, of Shaver Hollow, town of Andes, passed away peacefully early Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at her home.

The daughter of Paul and Anna (Bieck) Ratzke, she was born Aug. 18, 1918, in Stelp, Germany. She came to this area when she was in her teens and married Henry Brannen on Sept. 20, 1937, in Downsville.

In the early 1940s, the Brannens moved to Shaver Hollow where they operated their dairy until Henry’s death in September 1963. Subsequently, Edith was employed for a number of years as a food service worker in the cafeteria at SUNY Delhi.

She was a member of the Andes United Methodist Church, had been active in the Andes Home Bureau,; served on the Shavertown Cemetery Board, and derived much pleasure from the wildlife and natural setting where she made her home for so many years.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Carol Brannen of Bovina Center; five grandchildren, Sean, Erik and Heather Brannen, Abigail Brannen-Wilson and Molly Post; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Elsbeth Lade of Lehighton, Pa.; and a nephew.

She was predeceased by a son, Karl Brannen (2004), and two brothers, Gus and Helmut Ratzke.

Friends are invited to call 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday by the Rev. Gerald Norris, with burial following in the Shavertown Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to Andes Emergency Squad or Catskill Area Hospice, Delhi, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Roger Franks

ONEONTA — Roger Franks of Southside, Oneonta, passed away peacefully Friday evening, Aug. 12, 2005, at his residence.

He was born July 9, 1912, in Rock Royal, the son of the late Oscar J. and Mabel Schriver Franks.

Rogers was a graduate of the Bainbridge High School class of 1933.

On Aug. 20, 1936, he married Doris Roof in Greene. She predeceased her husband June 23, 1992.

Mr. Franks was a dairy farmer and John Deere tractor repairman in the Sidney and Sidney Center area for many years. Roger was also a custodian and bus driver for the Sidney Central Schools for several years.

Mr. and Mrs. Franks moved to the Scottsdale, Ariz., area 30 years ago. He was the head custodian for the Hohokam Schools in Scottsdale, Ariz.

He was a loving father, devoted brother and loyal friend.

He is survived by his son, Neale Franks and his wife, Joan, of Franklin; his daughter, Grace Allidi and her husband, John, of Oneonta, and his daughter, Carolyn Miles and her husband, Oscar Bouise, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Kathleen Turtur of Santa Maria, Calif., and Helen Longacre of Ocean City, N.J. Also surviving are three grandsons; two granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Two sisters, Esther Franks and Florence Geertgens, and his grandson, Steven Franks, predeceased Roger.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday Aug. 19, 2005, at the Sidney Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht of Otego officiating.

Burial will be at his family’s convenience in the Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Sidney Center United Methodist Church or Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Department FH, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Beverly A. Hoot

MARYLAND — A celebration for Col. Beverly A. Hoot, 73, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at the Word of Faith Christian Family Center, 6568 state Highway 7, Maryland.

A luncheon will follow at 2 p.m. at the VFW 2752, Schenevus.

Beverly served her country for 37 years, retiring as a distinguished military officer.

Beverly passed away Feb. 13, 2005, in St. Petersburg, Fla., after a long battle with cancer.

Emily Elders

NEW BERLIN — Emily Elders, 66, formerly of White Plains, died Aug. 10, 2005, at the Chase Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born in Port Chester on Jan. 31, 1939, the daughter of the late Walter and Sarah Jones.

She was the director of nursing for staff builders in White Plains.

Emily was predeceased by her husband, Robert; her parents, Walter and Sarah Jones, New Berlin; and sister, Eileen C. Jones.

Emily is survived by her sons, Raymond and Thomas; four grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Richard (Edna) Stevens of Mukwonago, Wis., and Mrs. Robert (Ellen) Layton of West Edmeston; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
