Joellen Proffitt

FRANKLIN — Joellen Proffitt, 67, of Franklin, formerly of Deposit, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at her home.

She was born Dec. 31, 1937, in Downsville, the daughter of Raymond and Dorothy Place Shields.

Joellen worked for many years in Deposit for Wheeler’s Market, Valley Offset Printing and Schaefers Quickway. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Bainbridge.

She is survived by two sons, William Fairbairn and his friend, Stasia, and Joseph Fairbairn and his wife, Susan; eight grandchildren, Michael, Shannon, Scott, Jolene, Jacob, Daniel, Rebecca and Michael; four great-grandchildren; a special friend, Robert Newman; her brothers and sisters, Judith Tuttle, Janice Gladstone, William Shields, Barbara Trussell, Vicki Winner, Richard Winner and Kevin Shields; a special aunt, Jean Selleck; and many other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents as well as by a sister, Patricia Ackerley, and by her husband, Harold Proffitt.

Private funeral arrangements were made through the Zacharias Funeral Home, 78 Second St., Deposit.

Memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or to the Franklin Emergency Squad or Franklin Fire Department.

Grant C. Slauson

ROXBURY — Grant Charles Slauson, 94, of Roxbury died Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville, where he had been a resident since 1996.

He was born July 30, 1911, to Orley Hiram Slauson and Effie Morse Slauson in the head of Vega, then known as the head of Buffalo. He moved with his parents to the Vega Flats, better known as the Eber Cartwright Farm. Later, he helped his parents move by driving a team of horses and pulling their furnishings over the Vega-Roxbury Mountain to their new home in Meeker Hollow. He also herded cattle from Vega over the Vega-Roxbury Mountain to Meeker on foot.

Grant married Eva Lennon on Sept. 7, 1932. They had two daughters, Dorothy M. Slauson Ruff of Kerhonkson and Eula M. Slauson of Tucson, Ariz.

Grant was married a second time to Eva Constable on Nov. 20, 1945. They had four daughters, Lena L. and Robert Armet of Hunter, Doris H. and Craig Allison of West Oneonta, Evelyn L. and Frank Moralis of Worcester and Orilee B. Slauson Basile of Cooperstown.

Grant had eight grandchildren, Michael and Sandy Mead of Roxbury, Kathryn Mead and Allen Tuscaney of Tucson, Teresa Alle and Bob Hostetter of Chichester, Dawn Gregory of West Oneonta, Robert B. Gregory Jr., of Oneonta, Aaron Werner of Neosho, Mo., Katherine Basile of Cooperstown and Joseph Basile of Cooperstown.

Grant had 10 great-grandchildren, John McGee of Tucson, David McGee of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Michelle Mead and Jason York of Margaretville, Melanie Mead of Syracuse, Makayla Miller of Cortland, Heather Sawyer of West Oneonta, Jesse Campbell of West Oneonta, Matthew Campbell of West Oneonta, Grace Werner of Neosho, Mo., Sarah Werner of Neosho, Mo., and Jacob Grant Werner of Neosho, Mo.

Grant had two great-great-grandchildren, Abigail Hazel McGee and David John McGee III, both of Sierra Vista.

He is survived by two sisters, Bertha Cammer of Roxbury and Elsie Furman of Poughkeepsie; two brothers, Milton and Charis Slauson of Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada, and Virgil and Beverly Slauson of Rogers, Ark.; and many, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Floyd, Marshall and Marion Slauson, and a sister, Hulda Morse.

Grant ran a dairy farm in Vega for many years. Later, he sold the farm and moved to Roxbury and worked in the Timberland charcoal plant in Stamford. After retirement, he worked for Green Thumb for many years. His greatest hobbies were hunting, trapping and fishing, including ice fishing.

A celebration of life service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury. His grandson, the Rev. Aaron Werner, will officiate.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Burial will follow in Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Contributions in memory of Grant Slauson may be made to the Roxbury Fire Department Ambulance Fund.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Kathryn I. Francis

COBLESKILL – Kathryn I. Francis, 87, passed away Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Cobleskill.

She was born June 11, 1918, in East Worcester, the daughter of Howard and Belva (Tipple) Butler.

She married Ralph Francis April 30, 1945, in East Worcester. He predeceased her in September 1991.

Mrs. Francis was a member of the East Worcester United Methodist Church then transferred her membership to the Cobleskill United Methodist Church when she moved to Cobleskill. She was also a volunteer for the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill for many years.

She is survived by a daughter, Pat Francis of Cobleskill; a sister, Belva "Billy" Stevens of Schenevus;and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her twin sisters, Alice Hartwell and Avis Mallory.

At the request of Mrs. Francis, she was cremated, and a memorial service will be at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester with the Rev. Laurel Phillips, pastor of the Cobleskill United Methodist Church, officiating.

A private interment will be held in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Clayton R. Walley

BINGHAMTON — Clayton R. Walley, 61, of Binghamton passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.

He was born Aug. 19, 1943, son of Ford F. and Veda (Backus) Walley Sr. in Cannonsville.

Clayton was employed as a tool maker for Amphenol Corp. in Sidney for 41 years.

He was a member of the Sidney Moose Lodge No. 277 in Sidney. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

Clayton is survived by his wife, Frances Walley, Binghamton; his father, Ford F. Walley Sr., Afton; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Roger and Denita Walley, Minnesota, Jim and Amy Walley, Owego, Stephen Walley, Minnesota, and Thomas and Sherry Clifford, Binghamton; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Gary Page, Binghamton; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Ford and Ann Walley Jr., Deposit, Francis and Barbara Walley, Unadilla, and Richard Walley, Albany; seven grandchildren, Brennen, Adam, Carter, Jordan, Ian, Evan and Courtney; and nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was predeceased by his mother, Veda Walley, and a nephew, Robert Walley.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, and from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Benjamin Shaw, pastor of the North Afton Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 356 N. Midler Ave., Syracuse, NY 13206.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Leif J. Johanneson

COLUMBUS — Leif J. Johanneson, 83, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, at his home in the Town of Columbus.

He was born May 26, 1922, in Norway to Carl and Gusta Johanneson.

He married Evelyn Hendrickson in 1947. She died in 1997.

Lief spend his childhood in Norway, Rosedale, Long Island and Burlington Flats, attending schools in Long Island and Edmeston.

During World War II, he served in the Merchant Marines and then later as a medic. Leif was known for his kindness and generosity throughout his life.

He is survived by one son, Norman Johanneson, and wife, Karen, of Cooperstown; and four grandchildren, Jason of Indianapolis, Kim, Erika and Noah of Cooperstown; one brother, Ryder Johanneson of New York City, and one sister, Edel White of Florida.

He owned and operated his own scrap iron and recycling business for many years in the New Berlin area.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery in the Town of Hartwick with the Rev. Lynn Ashe, officiating.

Burial will be in Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday, Aug. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Noel A. Smart

MASONVILLE — In loving and living memory of Noel Alphanso Smart.

The body of God is light. The spirit of God is life. The soul of God is love.

These three were the active luminaries in Noel’s Transition at 2:10 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005. "I did not know the `First Noel’ but we knew this man and that he is now `One with God,’ living in that reality of God’s consciousness and perfect being. Our prayer is that he shall come again in human form as one raised up with light, life and love." Stanford Mighty.

Mr. Smart was born March 31, 1912, son of the late Alphanso and Mobel Smart in Kingston, Jamaica.

He married Carmeto Reid on June 19, 1940. She survives in Masonville.

Mr. Smart was a chef in the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, retiring in 1980.

Friends may call Tuesday, Aug. 23. The family will be in attendance from 4 to 8 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the funeral chapel.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends Church in Unadilla.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

John W. Clapp

ONEONTA — Mr. John W. Clapp, 75, of Oneonta and recently of Burlington Flats, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, after suffering a sudden heart attack while singing a solo in his church on Aug. 14.

He was born the son of Earle and Louise (Wellman) Clapp in Oneonta.

Mr. Clapp married Ellen Thompson on Oct. 6, 1951, in Oneonta. Mrs. Clapp died on Oct. 9, 2000.

Mr. Clapp was a veteran of the United States Air Force, spending 1½ years in Japan during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Clapp attended Oneonta public schools. He was a graduate of Morrisville College and then served four years in the military. He then graduated from Oneonta Normal School, now known as State University College of Oneonta. He was a teacher at Valleyview Elementary School of Oneonta.

He was also an assistant football coach for four years at Oneonta High School. John was also director of the Oneonta summer baseball program for 10 years. He had been associated with Coddington’s Florist since 1945 and until the mid-1990s as a designer.

He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta and was active in the Sunday School, youth activities and the choir. He was president of Glenwood Cemetery of Oneonta, a staff member of the Science Center at SUCO, a member and former director of the Leatherstocking Railway Historical Society where he was active in restoring the Milford Depot and clearing brush from the tracks on the Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley Railroads.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Pamela Clapp of Hebron, Robert and Winifred Clapp of Fairport; two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia and Brian Krupper of Clinton, Sandra Urbany of Landenbergh, Pa.; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Ruth Clapp of Bolivar, Mo.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lois and Thomas Porteus of Oneonta; one sister-in- law, Clara "Jen" Clapp of Bastow, Fla.; 14 grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Clapp Family Plot in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, with Dr. Adrian A. McFarlane, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, Oneonta.

There will be no visitation at Mr. Clapp’s request.

Those who wish may make donations to the Glenwood Cemetery Association, PO Box 854 Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the First United Presbyterian Church, 381 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Pat G. Schneider

MARGARETVILLE — Pat Gordon Schneider, 82, of Margaretville died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

She was born May 21, 1923, in New York City to John and Helen Bogucka Gordon.

Pat was married to John David Schneider. He died in 1968.

She was a self-employed artist in the Margaretville area.

Pat is survived by a sister, Martina Bright of New Jersey.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. James J. McDevitt officiating.

Burial will be in Long Island National Cemetery, Pinelawn.

Friends may call at noon Wednesday, Aug. 24, until service time at 1 p.m.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
