Clayton R. Walley

BINGHAMTON — Clayton R. Walley, 61, of Binghamton passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.

Friends may call Monday, Aug. 22. The family will be in attendance from 4 to 8 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the funeral chapel. The Rev. Benjamin Shaw, pastor of the North Afton Methodist Church, will officiate.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 356 N. Midler Ave., Syracuse, NY 13206.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Walter A. Benson

WALTON — Walter August Benson, 61, a Walton resident, passed away Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, after a short illness.

Walter was born in Brooklyn on Feb. 24, 1944, to August and Dorothy (Trantor) Benson and grew up in North Merrick.

He married Alana Green of Walton on Sept. 17, 1988.

Mr. Benson was employed by the Nassau County Police Department, retiring from that position in 1984. He was a long-time member of the Police Benevolent Association (PBA), the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and the Retired Police Association (RPA). He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and son and will be greatly missed.

He is survived at home by his wife, Alana, and twin sons, Derek and Tyler Benson; two daughters, Lori and Jeff Falisi of Baiting Hollow and Denise and Torrin Webler of Walton; six grandchildren, Daniel, Stephanie, Tristan and Christy Falisi of Baiting Hollow and Eric and Jared Webler of Walton; his mother, Dorothy Benson, of Walton; three brothers, Robert and Harold Benson both of Spring Hill, Fla., and Bruce Benson of Orient Point; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, August Benson, in 1991.

The family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home in Walton.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22, at the Riverside Alliance Church, Walton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, in the name of Walter A. Benson.

Alicia Decker

MARYLAND — Alicia Decker, 75, of Maryland died at her home on Friday, Aug. 19, 2005.

She was born June 30, 1930, in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, the daughter of Eduardo and Darla (Garza) Rodriguez. She married Kenneth N. Decker on Aug. 18, 1956, in Durant, Okla. Mr. Decker predeceased his wife Dec. 31, 1997.

Alicia attended business college for two years. After marriage, she worked as a full-time homemaker and mom. She was an avid New York Yankees fan. Alicia loved to read, crochet and watch movies. She also was a WWE wrestling fan as well as an Elvis Presley fan. She enjoyed watching hummingbirds. Alicia especially loved to reminisce about "back home" in Mexico. Alicia will be deeply missed by her family and her extended family.

She is survived by her daughter Mary Miller of Hudson; her daughter Rosa and her husband, Claude Joslin, of Portlandville; her son Kenneth N. Decker Jr. and his wife, Vicki, of Milford; her daughter Cathy and her husband, Carl Decker, of Maryland; her sisters, Maria C. Mulvihill and her husband, Melvin, of El Paso, Texas, Maria Odelia LaCaze, Maria Concha Barrientos and Consuelo R. Arredando; her brother, Jesus Eduardo Rodriguez; her grandchildren, Brett Decker of Pennsylvania, Jessica Decker of Syracuse, Chris and Samantha of Syracuse, Kate and Alex of Albany, Bryan of North Carolina, Samantha, Michael, Matthew, Rebecca and Cassandra; two great-granddaughters, Alicia and Melvenia; one great- grandson, Robert; her special "adopted" family, Laura and Fred Staats, Alicia and Harry Hamilton, Desiree and Norbert Luft, Lori and Barry and family, Muriel Johnson; her very special friends, Pete Staats, Pete and Debbie Staats, John and Wanda Staats, Sam Nader, Phil Kellerman and his family, Ed and Mary Finley and Bernie Williams and his family.

The family gives special thanks to Alicia’s health-care providers, Dr. Santos, Patrick Germain, Lisa Casler and Hospice workers Cindy and Mary and the entire Hospice staff.

She also leaves behind her beloved pets — four cats and one dog.

Her daughter, Patricia Ann Decker, who died in 1992, and her great-grandson, Robert, predeceased Alicia.

Funeral services will be at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta with Allison Bookhout, Catskill Area Hospice chaplain, officiating.

Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Alicia’s daughter, Cathy Decker, 6469 State Highway 7, Maryland, NY 12116, or to Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive-Dept. FH, Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Alicia Decker.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Austin P. Willis

NORWICH — Austin Prentice Willis, 94, of Norwich, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at his daughter’s home in Pharsalia.

He was born May 25, 1911, in Masonville, to Perry and Mary Ellen (Allen) Willis.

He married Ruby Belle Dain on Sept. 5, 1935. She died Sept. 6, 2001.

He grew up in the Masonville area where he attended school in a one-room school house.

He was a farmer much of his life and was also employed as a machinist at Scintilla of Sidney, GLA of Norwich and TACO of Sherburne. He was a member of the Holmesville Baptist Church.

He loved his church and his family. He had a great concern that his country turn back to the Christian principles upon which it was founded. He was very outgoing and enjoyed social gatherings, Austin enjoyed listening to the old-time country music and was a member of the Del-Se-Nango Fiddlers Association. He was a proud member of the NRA and the Heritage Foundation.

He is survived by his children, Hazel (Carl) Craig of Ashtabula, Ohio, Lora (Harold) Smith of Painted Post, Larry (Diane) Willis of Norwich, Harriet Strouse of Corning, Lyle (Dawn) Willis of Norwich, Ruth Delamarter of Savannah, Mary Coy of Pharsalia, David (Jan) Willis of Broadalbin, Daniel (Sandy) Willis of Oriskany, John (Ronnie) Willis of Sherburne; 23 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one sister, Hazel; one brother, Warren; and son-in-law, Luther Coy.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Dakin Funeral Home New Berlin, with Pastor Romeyn Kipp of the Holmesville Baptist Church, Holmesville, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the Holmesville Baptist Church, Holmesville.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home LP, New Berlin.

Helen Whitaker Greene

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Helen Whitaker Greene, 88, of Pierstown died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 20, 2005, at Otsego Manor.

She was born July 24, 1917, in Trout Creek, a daughter of Clair L. and Mildred (Drake) Whitaker.

Raised in Delaware County, Helen graduated in 1935 from the Delaware Academy in Delhi where she earned the nickname "Flash" as a result of her athletic skills, especially in basketball. She was also artistically inclined, a gift that carried through her entire life. During her years at Delaware Academy she did many drawings for "Kalends," the academy’s annual.

Following her graduation from Delaware Academy, Helen was employed as a bookkeeper for the Delaware National Bank. In 1939, she married her first husband, James E. Turner Sr., and they resided in Mesa, Ariz.

In 1943, Helen returned to New York State, and made her home in Edmeston. A bookkeeper for New York Central Mutual, she also used her artistic talent to design the company logo. On Nov. 16, 1956, she married Scott E. Greene, Esq., a Cooperstown attorney, who at one time served as a NYS Assemblyman. In 1960, they moved to Cooperstown, where Helen was employed as the office manager at Woodland Museum since its inception in 1962. While in its employ, she was responsible for designing all the identifying markers for the trails at the museum.

Helen was a member of the Pierstown Grange, a member and Past Matron of the Otsego-Hartwick-Arbutus Chapter No. 201, Order of the Eastern Star, past president of the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital Auxiliary and a member and program chairman of the Otsego Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, she was a former member and past treasurer of the Edmeston United Methodist Church.

A former subscriber at the Leatherstocking Golf Course, Helen also enjoyed bowling in the leagues at the Alfred Corning Clark gymnasium. A member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown, she was an active supporter of the New York State Historical Society and the Cooperstown SPCA, and throughout the years worked extensively as a campaign solicitor with the American Red Cross.

Helen is survived by two sons, James E. Turner Jr., Capt., USN, Ret., of Pierstown and Robin W. Turner and his wife, Hilda, of Hobart; three grandchildren, Heather Turner, Holly McConnell and Anthony Turner, all of Colorado; and two sisters, Wanita W. Lewis of Sarasota, Fla., and Mrs. Mildred W. Lehman of Cooperstown.

In addition to her husband, Scott E. Greene, Esq., who died on Dec. 31,1985, Helen was predeceased by one sister, Annie Laurie Robinson-Ludington and two brothers, Dr. John Ogden Whitaker and LaVerne Whitaker.

A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown with Rev. James Ulrich, interim pastor, officiating. The Service of Committal and Burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, when Helen’s family will be present.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 1 Birchwood Drive, Dept. FH, Oneonta, NY 13820 or Cooperstown SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Laura R. Biedekapp

WALTON — Laura R. Biedekapp, 96, a lifelong resident of Walton, passed away Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at home with her family around her.

Mrs. Biedekapp was born Aug. 27, 1908, in Walton to Charles and Estelle Benedict Pierce. She graduated from Walton High School.

She married Myron Robinson who predeceased her in 1950. She subsequently married Irvin Biedekapp, who predeceased her in 2003.

Mrs. Biedekapp was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Walton. She spread her kindness every where she went.

She is survived by her sons, Brian Robinson of Bainbridge and Jan (Barb) Robinson of Walton and her stepchildren, Wilbur Biedekapp of Hancock and Eleanor Budine of Walton and her special nieces, Dorothy, Kathleen and Cappy. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Jodi (Bill) Supernault of Syracuse and her step-grandchildren Carolyn Fisher of Sidney, Jeannie (Dave) Brockway and Amy (Reggie) Cole, both of Unadilla, and Cindy Hall of Virginia; as well as several great-grandchildren.

Her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Robinson, son-in-law, Ralph Budine, and her brother, Harold, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware Streets, Walton, with the Rev. Mark Del Giudice of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Her family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the funeral begins at 2 p.m.

Interment will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Donations in her name may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, the Walton Emergency Squad or the ASPCA.

Charlita A. Ryan

FRANKLIN — Charlita A. Ryan, 50, of Franklin, passed away on Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at the Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.

She was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Sept. 23, 1954.

She was most recently employed as a secretary at State University College at Oneonta and was assigned to the educational division, secondary education department.

She was a member of the Unadilla Rod and Gun Club, the Franklin Sports Club and the Civil War re-enactors with the Sixth Pennsylvania Company G of Sherburne.

Charlita enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, hunting and cross-stich.

She is survived by her mother, Geraldine Lam, and her husband Johnnie of Colorado Springs, Colo.; her fiance, Ray Ekseth of Franklin; her daughter, Vega C. Rhodes and her fiance Brian Nutting of Watertown; a brother and two sisters, Gregory Singleton of Tructon, Colo., Carolyn Barnes of Salida, Colo., and Julie Baker of Ellicott, Colo.; two nieces and one nephew, Keelie and Amy Smith of Loveland, Colo., and Zachariah Singleton of Yukon, Okla.; as well as three grand nephews.

Friends are invited to call at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin on Friday, Aug. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance. A reception in celebration of Charlita’s life, to which all are invited, will follow at the American Legion in Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Eileen Pijnenburg

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Eileen Pijnenburg, 64, of Cooperstown, died early Friday morning, Aug. 19, 2005, at her home on Fair Street.

She was born on Aug. 8, 1941, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, a daughter of John Francis and Mary (Miller) Bowman. On Aug. 31, 1958, she married Wilhelmus Pijnenburg at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

Raised in Milford, she graduated in 1959 from Milford High School. For many years Eileen was employed as a telephone operator for New York Telephone and later for the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. Throughout the years she was also employed at the Alfred Corning Clark Gymnasium when it was located on Main Street and as a caregiver at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home.

A devoted communicant of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Like" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, Eileen enjoyed helping people. She also enjoyed flowers and for many years taught piano to area children. Card playing was a favorite pastime and she was especially fond of playing pitch with the Wednesday Foursome that consisted of Jean Ballard, Helen Dow, Janet Ireland and Audrey Skubitz.

Eileen is survived by her husband of 47 years, Willy, of Cooperstown; two daughters, Maria and Rick Ragsdale of Adrian, Ga., and Michelle and Steven Imbasciano of Morris; two sons, David and Sharon Pijnenburg of Bethel, Conn., and Bill Pijnenburg and his girlfriend, Betsy Holway, of Hartwick; a special granddaughter, Jacqi Le Pijnenburg of Bethel, Conn.; one brother, John F. "Jack" Bowman Jr., of Apalachicola, Fla.; many nieces and nephews; and her sister of the heart, Gayle Smith of Cooperstown.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, David B. Bowman, who died May 23,1959.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown with Fr. John R. Roos, Sacramental Minister of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Cherry Valley, presiding and Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, assisting. The Service of Committal and Burial will be private in the Bowman Family Plot in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Index.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown this evening, Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m. when Eileen’s family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, Eileen’s family would appreciate that expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts be made to Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 1 Birchwood Drive, Dept. FH, Oneonta, NY 13820.
