Elena G. Crane

MARGARETVILLE — Elena G. Crane, 80, of Margaretville died Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 5, 1924, in White Plains.

Elena was a homemaker and lived in Margaretville for the past 14 years. She attended the senior meals site in Margaretville.

She is survived by two daughters, Terry Ann Small and Valerie DiRolla; six grandchildren, James Downey, Michael Downey, Melissa Small and Mathew Small, Theresa DiRolla and Joshua Small; one brother and one sister.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with the Very Rev. James J. McDevitt officiating.

Burial will be in Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, until service time at 11 a.m.

Contributions in memory of Elena Crane may be made to the Humane Society of Delaware County, Delhi.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Leif J. Johannesen

COLUMBUS — Leif J. Johannesen, 83, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, at his home in the town of Columbus.

He was born May 26, 1922, in Norway to Carl and Gusta Johannesen.

He married Evelyn Hendrickson in 1947. She died in 1997.

Lief spent his childhood in Norway; Rosedale, Long Island; and Burlington Flats, attending schools in Long Island and Edmeston.

During World War II, he served in the Merchant Marines and then later as a medic. He served in Italy.

Leif was known for his kindness and generosity throughout his life.

He is survived by one son, Norman Johannesen, and wife Karen of Cooperstown; and four grandchildren, Jason of Indianapolis and Kim, Erika and Noah of Cooperstown; one brother, Ryder Johannesen of New York City; and one sister, Edel White of Florida.

He owned and operated his own scrap iron and recycling business for many years in the New Berlin area.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery in the town of Hartwick with the Rev. Lynn Ashe officiating.

Burial will be in Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Donations in Leif’s memory may be made to Chenango County Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Nelson VanKeuren

WELLS BRIDGE — Nelson VanKeuren, 84, recently of Wells Bridge, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005.

He was born May 30, 1921, in Neversink, son of Frank and Adella VanKeuren. Nelson spent his childhood and most of his adult life in Neversink. He was a graduate of Liberty High School. He lived in Palm Bay, Fla., from 1986 to 2003, when he moved to Wells Bridge.

Nelson served in the United States 7th Army Air Force, Radio Squadron during W.W.II, from November 1942 until February 1946. He retired from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Water Supply, Roundout-Neversink Section, in Grahamsville. He was a member of the Neversink Fire Department and the National Rifle Association of America.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughter Sharon Corey of Wells Bridge; and three grandchildren, Cheryl and Scott Evans of Smithfield, N.C., Karen and Michael Scott of Cary, N.C. and Kevin Klumpp of Wells Bridge. He is also survived by one brother, Milton and Eileen VanKeuren of Neversink; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his son, Keith VanKeuren; an infant daughter; sister, Fanny Knight; and brothers, Robert and Don VanKeuren.

A graveside service will be held at a future date in Grahamsville.

The family thanks Catskill Area Hospice for its care during his illness. Those wishing to may make donations may do so to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Robert N. Thayer

THERESA — Mr. Robert N. Thayer, 71, of Theresa and formerly of Ilion, died Saturday night, Aug. 20, 2005, at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.

Born at home March 31, 1934, in the town of Otsego, he was the son of Archie James and Esther May (Stanton) Thayer. He married Frances M. Yager on May 19, 1963, in the town of Middlefield. Frances died Oct. 24, 2002.

In his youth, Robert attended a one-room schoolhouse in Fly Creek and later enlisted in the United States Army. Upon receiving his honorable discharge from military service in 1956, he returned to the Cooperstown area and was employed as a dairy farmer on several area farms. Beginning in 1968, he was employed by Union Fork and Hoe in Frankfort and after 25 years of employment, he retired as head of maintenance.

In his spare time, Robert enjoyed tinkering with cars as well as playing cards with his friends.

Robert is survived by two daughters, Brenda S. Russell and her companion, Hugh Broadbent Jr., of Theresa and Vicki L. Oyer and her companion, Robert Slater, of Canajoharie; three sons, Larry E. Russell and his wife, Darlene, of Ilion, Timothy J. Russell and his companion, Jennifer, of Herkimer and David T. Russell and his wife, Tammy, of Missouri; 12 grandchildren, Heather and Larry Russell, Billi-Jo and Rebecca Russell, David and Orlando Russell, Robert Duncan, Hope Russell, George Oyer, Matthew Russell, Hugh Broadbent III and Jacob Broadbent; three great-grandsons, Devon Russell, Dante and Alex; one sister, Mrs. Harriet Smith and her husband, Lyle, of Hartwick Seminary; one brother, James S. Thayer and his wife, Henrietta, of New Berlin; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one brother, David C. Thayer, who died July 19, 2000.

A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, when Robert’s family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Gregory M. Visnosky

ONEONTA — Gregory M. Visnosky, 46, of Oneonta passed away Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 4, 1958, in Medina, Ohio, the son of George Visnosky and Betty Kiehl. He married Judi Danzi in Oneonta in 1985.

He was a drug and alcohol counselor for many years at the Oneonta Job Corps Center.

Gregory was a very active member of the Community Gospel Church, where he worshipped his Lord and served his community as an elder. He loved playing his guitar, singing and writing songs to his Lord.

He was a devoted and loving husband and father, making sure he was able to join in and/or attend the activities his children were involved in. He liked dancing with his wife, going on roller coasters with his daughter and sharing his computer skills with his son. He was an avid reader and enjoyed playing sports, especially football with his son and soccer with his daughter. He liked following and cheering on his favorite Cleveland sports teams. He liked going out to dinner and traveling. Gregory liked drinking coffee, and when he was home, his coffeepot was always on. He was good at listening to others, giving them advice when it was needed.

He is survived by his wife, Judi Visnosky, and his two children, Jonathan G. Visnosky and Hannah M. Visnosky of Oneonta; his parents, George Visnosky of Cape Coral, Fla., and Betty Kiehl of Fort Myers, Fla.; his two sisters, Sue and her husband, Grant Geist, of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Dee Helm of Fort Myers, Fla.; his father and mother-in-law, Otto and Madolyn Danzi of Oneonta; his two sisters-in-law, Sue and her husband, Ralph Miller, of Oneonta, and Denise and her husband, Rob Rotolo, of Webster; his nephews and nieces, Bradley Geist of New Philadelphia, Ohio, Trey and his wife, Judy Miller, of Greenfield, Mass., Peter Miller of Oneonta, Joshua Miller of Liverpool, Nicole Miller of Knoxville, Tenn., Zachary Miller of Oneonta, Jason Rotolo of Buffalo, and Katie Rotolo of Niagra Falls; his three great-nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Celebration of Life service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at the Community Gospel Church, 12 Grove St., Oneonta, with Pastor Don Yarborough officiating.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, when the family will be in attendance.

The family requests that, rather than flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Community Gospel Church or to an education fund for Gregory’s children sent in care of Judi Visnosky.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Richard O. Fox

PINEHURST, N. C. — Richard O. Fox, 85, of Pinehurst, N.C., died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at his home.

He was born April 25, 1919, in Jefferson, the son of Orville and Margaret (Peters) Fox.

Mr. Fox was a United States Army veteran of the Signal Corps. He served in World War II and 31 months in the Middle East. He was discharged with the rank of captain in 1945.

Mr. Fox worked for the New York Telephone Company in Syracuse for 37 years, retiring in 1981. At the time of his retirement, he lived in Skaneateles. He moved to Pinehurst, N.C., in 1985 and became a member of the Pinehurst Country Club, where he enjoyed golf and tennis. He was a member of the Village Chapel.

Surviving are his son, Richard W. Fox and wife Kathleen O’Connell of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a daughter, Carol L. Fox of Doylestown, Pa.; and grandsons, Richard Fox and Daniel Fox.

His wife of 58 years, Irene (Dailey) Fox, and brother, Walter Fox, formerly of Panther Valley, N.J., preceded him in death.

A memorial committal service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, in the Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating.

The Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home at 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, is serving the family.

E. Edwin Carpenter

DUNEDIN, Fla. — Mr. E. Edwin Carpenter, 87, of Dunedin, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, at Mease Manor, where he had resided for the past several years.

Born in Milford on Jan. 25, 1918, he was the son of Frank and Beulah (Adams) Carpenter.

Following his discharge from the United States Army after World War II, he settled in Deansboro, where he met and married his wife, Dorothy Fowler.

Edwin was employed for many years in the printing departments of the Waterville and Deansboro newspapers. He was a volunteer for the Deansboro Volunteer Fire Department and a volunteer interpreter for the deaf. A member of the Masonic Fraternity, he was also a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Oriskany Falls.

After his retirement, he and his wife made their home in Dunedin, Fla., where he was an active member of the Dunedin Coffee Klatch and a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.

Edwin is survived by his daughter, Lydia and her husband, Dr. Robert Dershewitz; two granddaughters, Dana Dershewitz and Naomi Wattles and her husband, Stephen; his sister, Nancy C. Dunn of Cooperstown; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, and his sister, Shirley C. Fowler.

There will be a memorial service at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at a later date.

Robert Paul Smith

NEW BERLIN — Robert Paul Smith, 81, of New Berlin died Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

Born Feb. 26, 1924, in New Berlin, he was the son of Arthur and Alice Keech Smith.

He attended New Berlin Central School and Mohawk Valley Community College.

A World War II veteran, Bob served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946.

He married Pauline Holdridge on June 14, 1953.

Bob retired as a chief of New York State Electric and Gas after 34 years of service.

He was a former trustee for the village of New Berlin.

Bob was a member and vestryman of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Berlin.

He was a very active sportsman and enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips. He was a life member of the New Berlin Fish and Game Club; Boy Scouts of America, Troop 61; American Legion; and a charter member of the New Berlin Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline; daughter, Sharlene Elizabeth Smith of Miami Beach, Fla.; granddaughter, Dana Renee Smith of Moscow, Pa.; a sister, Pauline Roberts of Binghamton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his four brothers, Harold, Bernard, Woodrow and Donald, and two sisters, Marion and Beatrice.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Berlin with Father Charles Taylor officiating.

Burial will be in Saint Andrew’s Cemetery.

Contributions in Bob’s memory may be made to the New Berlin Emergency Squad or Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Funeral arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin
