Martha D. House

ONEONTA — Martha D. House, 80, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Oct. 18, 1924, in Millville, N.J., the daughter of Oliver and Mary (Fries) Murphy.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Martha and her family moved to the Oneonta area in 1946. Martha loved bowling. For many years she bowled for the Top Hatters. She also enjoyed bingo and puzzles.

She is survived by her 11 children and their spouses, Russell B. and Ginny House of San Diego, Calif., Harold R. and Phyllis House of Milford, James E. and Peggie House of Oneonta, Michael O. House of Belleville, Ill., Mary H. Colone of Oneonta, Robert D. House of Oneonta, Joseph S. and Pat House of Omaha, Neb., Thomas R. and Renee House of Oneonta, William B. and Karen House of Kingsley, Mich., JoAnn H. and Michael Snyder of Oneonta and Pamela M. and Jim Reda of San Diego, Calif.; one son-in-law, Douglas Bordinger of New Lisbon; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a special sister-in-law and friend and her husband, Ann and Tony Mongillo of Oneonta; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Martha was predeceased by one daughter, Jane E. House Bordinger, and one sister, Viola McKytrick.

A graveside memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Irvin L. Fritts

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Irvin L. Fritts, 66, of Cooperstown died expectedly Monday afternoon, Aug. 22, 2005, at his home.

He was born in Edmeston on June 6, 1939, a son of Leon Byard and Hazel M. (Tilley) Fritts. After attending Cooperstown schools, Irv joined the United States Marine Corps in 1957. He rose to the rank of lance corporal and received a distinguished medal for being an expert rifleman and sharpshooter. While serving in the Marine Corps he married Sylvia Briscoe on March 22, 1959, in the Hartwick Baptist Church.

Upon receiving his honorable discharge on Jan. 7, 1963, Irv returned to the Cooperstown area and was employed by Phillips Construction, also serving as a Cooperstown police officer for several years. In 1965, he and his family moved to Langhorn, Pa., where he joined a carpenters’ union. Upon his and his family’s return to Cooperstown in 1967, Irv began construction of their home and joined the Hudson Valley District Council of Carpenters Local No. 258 in Oneonta. At one time he served as vice president of this union, which is now known as the Empire State Regional Council of Carpenters and Joiners of America, based in Binghamton. He also taught apprentice carpentry at BOCES in Milford and was an avid NASCAR fan.

Irv is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sylvia B. Fritts of Cooperstown; two daughters, Theresa Parker and her husband, Michael, of Covina, Calif., and Denise Espiritu and her husband, Tony, of Valencia, Calif.; one son, Gerard Fritts and his wife, Rachel, of Milford; eight grandchildren, Ashley, Lindsey and Emily Parker, Megan Espiritu, Derrick and Jordan Fritts, and Travis and Jordan Conroy; four brothers, Robert C. Fritts of Florida, Gerald Fritts of Lincolnton, Ga., Charles Fritts and his wife, Ruth, of Phoenix Mills and Allen Fritts of Otego; two sisters, Clemma Turner of Otsego Manor and Joyce Link of Dansville; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ralph Fritts of Herkimer and Mrs. Marion Fritts of Otsego Manor; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Irv was predeceased by an infant daughter, Deborah Lee Fritts; five brothers, Frederick Earl Fritts, Carl B. Fritts, James Edward Fritts, Ralph Donald Fritts and Leon Fritts; and one sister, Clara Louise Fritts.

A funeral service will be at noon Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Douglas Deer, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hartwick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, when Irv’s family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Bernice Male

HARPURSVILLE — Bernice Male, 83, of Harpursville died at 1:25 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at her home.

She is survived by her husband, E. Donald Male of Harpursville; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Joan Mowers of Cape Cod, Mass.; three grandchildren, Kelly, Kevin and Kerry; two great-grandchildren, Villy and Ariana; a sister, Betty Earl of Rochester; and nieces and nephews.

She was a retired employee of Bendix in Sidney.

Private graveside services will be held in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton, at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home, 69-71 Maple St., Harpursville.

Christena Lent Reynolds

OTEGO — Christena Lent Reynolds, 55, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Oct. 30, 1949, in Sidney, the daughter of Verner Lent and Arrietta (Teed) Lent.

She was married to Leonard Reynolds on Aug. 30, 1980, in Mt. Upton.

She was a graduate of Hartwick College and had taught school as an earth science, chemistry and biology teacher at South New Berlin Central School until the merger of the schools. She continued teaching at Unadilla Valley Central School, retiring three years ago after 31 years of teaching. She and her husband had resided at their current home for the past nine years and were formerly of Mount Upton. She and her husband enjoyed traveling throughout the Northeast attending car shows.

Christena is survived by her husband, Leonard of Otego; her canine pal, Deuce; her goddaughters, Stacy Rose and Sandy Moxley; her sisters, Barbara Lilley and husband Keith of Otego and Janet Tobey and husband Doug of Gilbertsville; her nieces and nephews, Mark Tobey and wife Andrea of Ft. Knox, Ky., Tammy Tobey of Gilbertsville, Timothy Lilley and wife Trish of Vestal, Sandy Bonczkowski and husband Greg of Otego and Lisa Kuehnle and husband Bill of Schoharie. She is also survived by her grand-nieces and nephews, Chris, Glen, Darren, Aleah and Alysah Tobey of Ft. Knox, Ky., and Gavin and Hannah Bonczkowski of Otego.

The family extends a special thanks to Ed Thompson, Mary Hoose, Diane and Mike Weigel, "The 3 Stooges" and to "Miss Aggravation Thering."

There will be no calling hours.

A service to celebrate the life of Christena will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Gilbertsville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Randolph Palada officiating.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the "Christena Reynolds Scholarship fund" at the Unadilla Valley Central School, c/o Barbara Lilley, 1240 Co. Hwy. 45, Otego, NY 13825.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Howard Silvernail

OTEGO — Howard N. Silvernail, 83, of Otego passed away Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born June 8, 1922, in Butternuts, the son of Leland J. and Beatrice (Nearing) Silvernail.

Howard was married to Jeanne L. deMontaigue on July 28, 1961, in New Orleans, La. Mrs. Silvernail predeceased Howard on July 29, 2005.

Howard, a resident of Otego for 30 years, was a retired supervisor for Amphenol Corporation of Sidney.

He is survived by his stepsons and stepdaughter-in-law, Louis and Eileen York of Acton, Mass., and Robert York of Otego; his brothers, Fred of Rochester, Neal of Rhinebeck, Mike of Largo Fla., and Larry of Rochester; and his sisters, Frances Sherburne of Morrisville, Ruth Bell of Oneonta, Nita Bryant of Pleasant Valley, Donna Silvernail of Edmeston, Joeann Buerkert of Tomball, Texas, and Sharon Ellison of East Syracuse. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held later at the convenience of the family in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Patricia Spindler

SIDNEY — Patricia Elizabeth Spindler, 63, of Sidney and formerly of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, at her home in Sidney.

She was born July 20, 1942, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the daughter of Daniel and Mary Ellen (Neylon) Chimer.

Patricia enjoyed playing bingo and Yahtzee, crocheting and knitting. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends. While living in Oneonta, she attended St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and served on the PTO at St. Mary’s School.

Patricia is survived by her two children, Daniel Spindler of Sidney and his fiance, Amanda Snow, of Unadilla and Mary Ellen Vredenburgh and her husband, James, of Bainbridge; four grandchildren, Thomas Daniel Spindler, Katlynn and Connor Vredenburgh and Sonia Brandenburgh; one brother-in-law, Joseph Coffay of Wilkes Barre, Pa.; five nieces and nephews; one great-niece; as well as many dear friends.

She was predeceased by one son, Peter James Spindler, and one sister, Maryann Coffay.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, officiating.

Calling hours will be held Saturday from noon until service time at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, NY 13753 in loving memory of Patricia Elizabeth Spindler.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Nancy Stewart Snitzer

ONEONTA — Nancy Stewart Snitzer, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and friend, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005. Nancy will leave a great hole in the hearts of family and the community in which she was an active participant.

Nancy was born on a cattle ranch in the rugged mountains of Arizona and was a descendant of pioneer Arizona families. She attended the University of Arizona and graduated from Madonna College in Michigan.

She was a registered dietitian and worked for the Community Action Program in Lancaster, Pa. After moving to Oneonta, she worked at Fox Hospital and Nursing Home. Nancy was a fourth-generation member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and was very active at both the local and state level.

At the First Presbyterian Church, Oneonta, she served on several committees and was a member of the bell choir. She was an active Girl Scout most of her life as a girl, leader and national trainer.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Jim Snitzer; daughter Heather Capelli (Ken); and granddaughter Eva, all of San Francisco; son Brian (Erika) and grandson Michael Isadore, all of Raleigh, N.C., and daughters Carole (San Francisco) and Ivy (Los Angeles); mother, Margaret Stewart (Phoenix, Ariz.) and numerous cousins.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at the First Presbyterian Church, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice or P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Mary Harrison

MOUNT VISION — A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, in the Mount Vision Cemetery for Mary Angela Gomez Botella Harrison.

Mary was born in Manhattan, New York City, to Rosa (Gomez) and Juan Botella on Aug. 4, 1928. After graduating from Boiceville High School, Mary attended Hartwick College in Oneonta on a Dewar scholarship, where she joined the ZTA sorority. She was the valedictorian of the 1952 class. In 1952-53, she worked as a mathematician at the Lawrence Livermore Lab.

She married Rodger DeLong Harrison in the First Baptist Church of Mount Vision on May 23, 1953. The wedding was officiated by the Rev. Loren Hawver and Fr. Louis vanEss.

Mary then worked two years in the nuclear laboratory in Berkeley, Calif. She made a home in Everett, Wash., where Rodger was the associate minister at the First Baptist Church in Tucson, Ariz.

She succumbed to Hodgkin’s disease on Feb. 11, 1958, and was buried in South Lawn Cemetery, Tucson.

Mary is survived by her sister, Audrey Tindall of Smyrna, Ga.; her brother, Ernest Botella of San Antonio, Texas; a niece, Nina Reber of Smyrna, Ga.; nephew, Raymond Botella of San Antonio, Texas; and her husband, Rodger Harrison of Arnold’s Lake.

Her remains have been removed from Tucson for burial in the Marion and Horace Harrison family plot. Friends are invited to the service.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to the Organ Fund, Christ Episcopal Church, Cooperstown.

William Brandow

SCHENEVUS — William D. Brandow, 50, passed away in peace on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005.

He was born Aug. 10, 1955, in Catskill, the son of Alton and Barbara (Irish) Brandow.

Billy married Kathy Miller in 1976 in Oneonta.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter, Hannah, and his best friend, John Mattice.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Brandow, of Schenevus; his son, William Scott, and his wife, Tracy Brandow of Davenport; his granddaughter, Hannah Brandow; his parents, Alton and Barbara Brandow of Fergusonville; his brothers and sister, Glen Brandow of Maine, Marylee and her husband, Dwayne Hill, of Harpersfield, and Mark Brandow of Fergusonville; very special in-laws, Bill and Daurice Miller of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and an aunt.

A celebration of Willy’s life will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at his home, 1473 County Highway 9, Schenevus.

Memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Willy to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

The Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home at 51 Dietz St., Oneonta is serving the family.

Janet L. Osborn

EDMESTON — Janet L. Osborn, 66, of Burlington Flats was called home to the Lord early Saturday morning, with her family by her side.

She was born June 14, 1939, the daughter of Leon G. and Gertrude I. (Pashley) Dockstader.

On Sept. 7, 1957, she married her childhood sweetheart, David L. Osborn.

Janet was an active member of the Burlington Flats Baptist Church for 35 years. She taught Sunday School, belonged to the choir and also served as choir director and a deaconess. Janet along with her husband demonstrated a passion for the ministry of visitation. She had a strong faith in her Lord, which led to her belief in children’s ministry; the foundation for the current Great Beginnings Preschool at her church.

Janet had also been a past member and matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Her faith was only one aspect of her life, but it intertwined with other facets. Janet was a farm wife, going to all the kids’ sports events and activities.

Upon retiring from NYCM Insurance Company in 2001, she used this additional time to shop for antiques or go garage-sale shopping.

She had a love of horses stemming back from her childhood pony.

The largest highlight in her life was her family, evidenced by her joyously spending Thanksgiving and Christmas wrapping around her all whom she loved.

Janet is survived by her husband of 48 years, David; her children and their spouses, Daniel and Nancy Osborn, Sandra and John Boutcher and Constance and Christopher Kaye; her grandchildren, Joshua and Ashley Osborn, Sydney and Cameron Kaye, and Jacqueline and Jillian Boutcher; her in-laws, Lauren and Frances Osborn, Judy and John Martin. Her special cat "Baby;" and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church with Pastor Jay Henderson officiating.

Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Interment will be in Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Janet’s memory to the Burlington Flats Great Beginnings Preschool, the Edmeston Emergency Squad or Catskill Area Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.
